I think this is the single best piece of advice I’ve heard about filmmaking. I’ve been running around trying to do everything because I’m so afraid to get stuck doing one thing but it’s been years and I haven’t made all that much progress. I’ve got it backwards.
I know this is a joke, but honestly you can film bricks and improve your skills. You can practice B rolls and other different shots, on filming the bricks.
R Cody Wanner such good advice for #NoSmallCreator... Now I just have to "find my brick." This video is an amazing counterpart to your latest post Cody.
I love how you guys structure meaningful advice videos around great storytelling and visual. Your style is realistic but polished. I first subscribed when I found your Portland, Oregon travel guide video and been enjoying your new stuff as well. Ty for inspiring
Wow. This couldn’t have been more timely. Just spent the evening looking at film schools and applying for production assistant jobs. Just stressing over what I’m doing/what I should be doing. Thanks for the legitimate insight. So often videos like this are bogus and fraught with cliches.
I really needed to hear this! I've been worried about being so focused on a specific niche, but the brick metaphor is very encouraging! Thanks so much!
Great story, you guys have real natural talent. You don't need a school for anything when you have that. My no-film-school story is that I like photography and movies and just self-learned by reading books, magazines, internet, and shooting a lot. I lack natural talent so I have to be aware that my success has limits. But this is normal for all industries. We need ten filmmakers to play the game so we can find one good one. The good thing about filmmaking/photography is that now it's cheap and easy for everyone to try, so that we can find the truly talented people like Colin & Samir. For those with less talent...they can still make films/photos for therapeutic purposes. Because it's a good way to express yourself and gain self-awareness. All of the filmmaking that occurs in a community, whether it's by talented or talentless filmmakers, will create an environment that encourages more people to get involved and increase the odds of finding great filmmakers.
*What an inspiring message man!* Many people, including me, don't really have the answer to life what they should do in life. Studying one thing, but end up doing the other is a unique journey and won't apply to anyone, but that just proves the point that nothing is ever too late! Winny out... _for now_ 😉
I started on a 60D as well and started filming weddings. Now, I've branched away from them and do all sorts of films. Persistence is definitely key! Great story man
Such a great analogy, choosing your brick. I too majored in business in college but always knew I would end up doing something creative, and my brick of choice is UA-cam, let's see where this journey takes me! Thanks for the advice Colin!
this is a great video. Guidance counselors should play this for high schoolers still deciding on their college majors. One request for a future video - could you take one of your earliest lacrosse narrative videos & critique it knowing what you do now? Would you edit / shoot it differently & tips for those starting out in storytelling?
That’s such a cool story Colin. I grew up in boulder. I’d love to meet you someday and get your ideas about vlogging. I’d love your content and would love to learn from you. I live down in Sandiego. Anyway I could come meet you guys someday.
This is awesome advice. I’m still trying to find my brick, but I have a very similar path regarding college (M.S. in HR) and passion (anything creative). I’m living in Denver now and I heard that the lacrosse team here is a huge deal, so I’ll have to check them out!!
I do like the brick analogy but I don't think it's the only way. A lot of people start out with a wide variety of topics to film and eventually pick one down the road. Plus filming the same thing everyday might get boring for some people, and possibly cause them to lose their passion for it. Great video nonetheless. Keep up the good work!
Such solid advice! This is one thing I would’ve done differently. It’s taken me way more years to earn solid money from photography and videography because of many focuses and not zoning in on a brick.
I see you have fixed the back drop after the Cody jump through lol. Find what you love to do and never work another day in your life. This was great Colin
This is actually really great advice. It feels annoying to specialise because I want to do ALL the things and do them NOW, but that's not the best way to make a name for yourself.
Awesome video! Great tips! Im in stage of finding what exactly I wanna do. If I should focus more on short films/small commercials. Video like this is a huge help. :))
I don't know if you've already mentioned this (since I've only just recently found your channel), but how did you grow from filming your "brick" to growing enough to film other sports? Did you post online? Or show it to other people and everyone slowly got wind of your awesome film skills? Or did you just keep a hold of your films and showed them to people when you applied for more film opportunities? Thanks for a great video!
Me parece que ese italiano fue más español! All good man.. nice video... not sure why you guys don’t have more exposure... youtube sells only drama and shit
So I need to know is your “ brick “ basically like find your niche ? Say I was all about Harry Potter or something in highschool so I should film fantasy movies till I’m a beast basically?
I wasn't set on filming lacrosse for the rest of my life, but I knew I needed to start somewhere and lacrosse was the community that I had the most access to. Once you have access and trust, you can start telling stories.

Only film bricks. Got it.
Nailed it 😂
i lol'd
I know this is a joke, but honestly you can film bricks and improve your skills. You can practice B rolls and other different shots, on filming the bricks.
This was a perfect example of some solid story telling guys! Loved it. And walking away with a new perspective on progression too, so thanks a lot!
Absolutely love.

That’s such a cool story Colin. I grew up in boulder. I’d love to meet you someday and get your ideas about vlogging. I’d love your content and would love to learn from you. I live down in Sandiego. Anyway I could come meet you guys someday.
Great video! I don't know if I will want to go to film school someday but this shows that you don't have to

Great video and brick analogy is amazing, one more thing could please tell which wrist watch you’re wearing in the video.
I like your background and how you make it into the filmmaking industry!

This is interesting. Its similar to what I am trying to do, so it was helpful to hear/see your story. I'm gonna go chose my brick. Thanks Colin.
Great content guys! Love it!

Dai Colin, non perdere le speranze! Puoi parlare italiano con me! Vi seguo dall'Italia, grandi ragazzi. Great videos, keep doing it!
I didn't even know I had a brick, but mine was Live Music !! Learned a lot with it !
Cool story! Love the analogy
This is some dope content. Inspired!
Awesome video! Great tips! Im in stage of finding what exactly I wanna do. If I should focus more on short films/small commercials. Video like this is a huge help. :))

Maaan this vid was soooo good
Your Italian is still pretty good!
Solid advice. Like a brick. Brick advice? Regardless, very helpful. This should be on the @nofilmschool page 🤷🏻♀️
Love this
real nice!
Great advice.
Thank you
Did you go to CU Boulder? That graduation photo looks like your in front of Old Main, and you said Boulder, CO but I wasn't 100% sure.
Great vid.
Thank you, I mean it!
Good advice! Choose your brick!
Brick analogy was pretty effective
nice down to earth video
Thanks Chuck
Do you have any advice if your not sure what your one brick should be? I want to get into film making but I have no idea what I should start with.
I wasn't set on filming lacrosse for the rest of my life, but I knew I needed to start somewhere and lacrosse was the community that I had the most access to. Once you have access and trust, you can start telling stories.
I would love if you guys made a video about rates... how do you go about that...
With all of your passions - how hard was it to find your brick?
Awesome!
Looks like I gotta make a vlog about not being let into film school now. Nice.
Gotta focus on the Bricks now!
