"There's a difference between being prepared and terrifying a sick woman." Curry's look of total confusion shows how detached she is from the compassionate side of being a doctor.
To be fair, it was a perfectly reasonable question to ask, and I'm surprised the other doctors didn't ask it already. What if she passes out and the fetus dies. They should know her wishes in that very possible event.
You do know that she’s supposed to represent a neurodivergent character who can only rationalize and can’t be emote on the same level as an average person, right? That’s literally the point of her character in the show… Plus it is a literal show… If you watch the show, you will see that she actually gets help and learning how to help people properly
Yes. Agreed. Nobody really talked to the mother in an empathetic manner it seems. It was all about pushing this and not at all about bridging a MASSIVE divide in their discourse.
i was thinking this too. Wouldnt the chance for another child be enough to make her stay alive? Since that seems like the only thing she cares about, bringing a child to life.
She believed the baby was a miracle and that God wouldn't give her that miracle and then take it away, so she wouldn't believe that she would die. Also after trying for 12 years she wouldn't be expecting a second 'miracle'
Doc Charles needs a show of his own. I kind of dont understand why hes not the main character. He is the most interesting one, has the most depth AND he`s the is a solid OG actor who can carry a show. So... Make it happen NBC. And Dick Wolf.

@@arianebolt1575 an ectopic pregnancy isn't considered a miscarriage. At least that's what my friend's doctor told her when she lost one of her fallopian tubes because of it.

Many years ago, an elderly woman once told me. "Chances and opportunities only happen when you are alive. Live to be able to try again or try something new. There is nothing more upsetting than lost potential and ended perseverance. Especially to those who loved you and supported you along the way."
Maybe so, for some people. But this woman obviously decided that the risk of her own death was preferable to the agony of trying to get pregnant again. No one had the right to take that decision from her. No one had the right to force their own medical decision on her. People have the right to choose when and for what reason they die.
That attitude she had toward that couple, saying "Even though it may seem like a miracle things can still go wrong", it's not what she said, it's HOW she said it. Dr. Manning was put off by it, you could see it on her face. Also, the parents aren't medical experts, and they come to the hospital to find out what is going on with their baby, not to get a lecture.
As a first year nursing student (in Australia though) we’ve already had classes on this sort of thing! Theres no way a student dr should get this far and not understanding what dr charles is talking about. Yes I know its a show, but you’d be surprised how much this stuff happens irl
They put it in more as a demonstration than a reality. It's sort of like all the fringe scenarios that they have in the show, they just mainstream it for views.
I think that she did understand, but her feelings probably got in the way. She probably felt bad for the patient and really wanted to save her life regardless of what her beliefs were. She made a mistake of getting her feelings in the way instead of doing what's right.
She has no interest in becoming a practicing doctor. She is going to into medical research and development. She said as much in the episode. She went to MIT, a school more known for engineering than medicine. Yale medical and Harvard law complete the New England trifecta!
What's great about this show is how much it focuses on the emotional side of being a doctor. A lot of shows like to up ratings by inserting relationships or making the answer to the solution super abstract. But making decisions like this with moral implications is fascinating to watch with the right cast.
"A lot of shows like to up ratings by inserting relationships [...]" But...they do that. There is always some kind of relationship drama - which is super annoying (but I love a lot of characters so I watched it anyway).
As someone who has experienced a tubal burst due to an ectopic pregnancy, I would not wish that kind of pain on anyone, its one of the most painful and heartbreaking experiences I have ever had...
It's not about playing god, it's about forcing ANY belief on someone. The option of termination should be everyone's right to choose. If a woman doesn't want to risk her life, she shouldn't have to. If a woman does want to risk her life, we shouldn't stop her. It's that simple. Forcing someone to carry a pregnancy is just as bad as forcing a termination.
The patient was demonstrably suicidal, she would have been adjudicated as deficient and she'd have had that procedure done anyway. Episode is a bit contrived in that they said she wasn't crazy.

This episode is a pretty good representation of how abortion should be handled. If you consent to abortion in order to save you life, you're okay. If you want to risk it, whether it's based on religion or fertility issues or both, you are free to do so. And whenever we talk about it, we have to talk with EMPATHY. We have to listen to their struggles and imagine ourselves in their position. The situation is scary enough, you have to be gentle but clear, you have to be kind and tactful. Forcing someone to keep their pregnancy is just as bad as forcing them to terminate. The blond doctor is a great example of why we should respect beliefs, because you can explain what's happening to her body without calling out their beliefs in the process. It's probably a good idea to research their religion if youre not familiar with it in order to spin it in a more comforting way, let them know you made an effort to understand and are giving them the options that can align with their morals. Soften the pain they experience. Edit: Yall. Definition of abortion: the removal of A fetus and placenta. It doesn't matter if it's a viable pregnancy or doomed to fail, it's still an abortion. Ectopic pregnancies are one of the reasons people get the procedure. Don't be like the lady who said if that 10 year old got an abortion, then it's not an abortion. You can't just change the definition of a word. It's still AN ABORTION.
Agree wholeheartedly, personally I wouldn't have an abortion but I respect the free will of others to do so; on the flip side I also expect others to respect the wishes of those who wish to keep a pregnancy even if it doesn't seem viable...
Yeah...in this case, it's not really abortion. An ectopic pregnancy is in no way viable. In no cases can you just remove it and replant it somewhere else. The placenta is too complex to do that. These sort of "pregnancies" cause death in the mother 100% of the time if not removed. It is 100% not viable. I see no reason to respect someone's "religious beliefs" if those beliefs will endanger their very lives. In a more realistic setting, I think you'd find that several hospital staff would have found some things to lie about in order to save the idiot woman....and they would all have been perfectly fine in doing so. They would not have told her about the heartbeat afterwards. That's actually just beyond cruel, and totally unnecessary. What's done is done. "God will take care of it" reminds me of this story: A storm descends on a small town, and the downpour soon turns into a flood. As the waters rise, the local preacher kneels in prayer on the church porch, surrounded by water. By and by, one of the townsfolk comes up the street in a canoe. "Better get in, Preacher. The waters are rising fast." "No," says the preacher. "I have faith in the Lord. He will save me." Still the waters rise. Now the preacher is up on the balcony, wringing his hands in supplication, when another guy zips up in a motorboat. "Come on, Preacher. We need to get you out of here. The levee's gonna break any minute." Once again, the preacher is unmoved. "I shall remain. The Lord will see me through." After a while the levee breaks, and the flood rushes over the church until only the steeple remains above water. The preacher is up there, clinging to the cross, when a helicopter descends out of the clouds, and a state trooper calls down to him through a megaphone. "Grab the ladder, Preacher. This is your last chance." Once again, the preacher insists the Lord will deliver him. And, predictably, he drowns. A pious man, the preacher goes to heaven. After a while he gets an interview with God, and he asks the Almighty, "Lord, I had unwavering faith in you. Why didn't you deliver me from that flood?" God shakes his head. "What did you want from me? I sent you two boats and a helicopter."
Dr. Charles is right though. No matter how much you want to save a patient, it is their body, their decision. A parent of mine is in a religion that when it comes to medical aid, they don't accept ANY kind of blood donation (iykyk) and we did have a scare once of them dying from blood loss. Eventhough my siblings and I knew giving them blood would save them, we respected their choice and told the doctors every chance they came asking, no blood. As a doctor keeping your patient informed about everything is important, but the way you deliver that information is vital also. Here we have a doctor who wanted all the facts before they gave their patient the worst case scenario. Once the facts were known, the patient was informed and the patient made their decision. I appreciate the other doctors handling it this way. I don’t agree with the mother’s choice but it is her body. If a doctor can get away with this without recourse they will feel emboldened to do worse when they have more power.
The blond nurses question was while morbid and sad was a valid question however lying about the fetus heartbeat and the bl fact that it was alive and lying straight to that woman’s face was the absolute worst thing she could have done.
The blonde character is a medical student, not a nurse. Nurses would not be attending with the senior doctor. Nurses provide nursing care and carry out the doctor’s instructions.
I had many years of infertility and many miscarriages. I am lucky to have never experienced an ectopic, but I know the pain of losing a very wanted baby. I can understand that the blonde doctor crossed a professional line, but I cannot imagine coddling a patient trying to kill themselves to "save" a non-viable fetus. The "baby" is already dead. It cannot survive where it is and will kill you if it grows too big. I would never allow myself to die to keep a non-viable fetus alive. My life (and the life of this hypothetical patient) has value and means something. There is such a gross misunderstanding and so much misinformation about what an ectopic is. If mother dies, so does the non-viable fetus. This entire scenario was oddly handled by this show. I empathize with the gut-wrenching feeling of losing a very much wanted baby, but to blatantly ignore the opinions of doctors trying to save your life is odd behavior.

People have the right to choose when and for what purpose they die.
Even before the main dilemma, she shows a lack of concern for the patient's feelings. A "miracle" though definitely originating from religion isn't even strictly religious anymore nor literal. It just means a good thing you saw as impossible to a lot of people. There's no need to correct this. Now, clearly this couple is really religious so they definitely meant in the religious sense but the doctor did not know that and to be honest it still means there's no need to correct this just in a different way. It isn't even "wrong" (well before learning the ectopic part) as it is unknowable if the baby was a miracle. It's unlikely but that's part of the idea of religion is that we can't prove any theory. But even if we knew for a matter of fact... literally who does this harm. Now obvious the ectopic part stop this all, because no one could reasonably say that a baby unable to ever be born could be a miracle and also they want to keep the baby using the miracle narrative which is harming her and could kill her. But before this, it harms no one and yet she feels the need to correct
Even then, though. She had the right to choose when and for what reason she died. No one has the right to force their personal medical decisions on someone else.
I don't think they explained to the patient well enough that ectopic pregnancies are unfortunately a non-starter. There isn't anything you can do to save the foetus. So that effectively eliminates the foetus from the decision whether or not to have the surgery. Her choice becomes 'Do you want to live or do you want to die?', and if she says she wants to die, then the doctors have to decide if they are willing to essentially perform an assisted suicide by watching her die painfully. You can't force someone to have a surgery when they refuse, it has to be their choice, but I don't see why they weren't clearer about this element. She was acting like the pregnancy could become viable if she waited. On another point, the whole believe that God will fix it is just so confusing. Do you believe that God purposefully made the pregnancy ectopic and will then change it for some unknown reason, or are you saying that God was sleeping on the job so the pregnancy was accidentally ectopic and he will fix the mistake? Why would you trust God to fix something that went wrong on his watch in the first place? And if you think God is going to fix your health so you ignore the recommendations of your doctors, why did you bother coming to the doctors for help anyway? I mean this more respectfully than it sounds, it's just this sort of talk about God has never really made any sense to me.
@@thatonedog819 she was dying, if the fetus stayed there she would have died. it is essentially suicide once you are aware on what is happening but refuse to fix it.

This is one of the many, many, many reasons why I'm an atheist. If I were the doctor in this situation, and I had to let this woman die because she believed so strongly in something that didn't help her at all, I would need a lot of therapy, because even though it wouldn't be my fault, I would feel a lot of frustration and guilt.

Dr. Curry got put on blast here, but the way Dr. Manning stopped her from telling the parents about why the risk factors are still relevant was wrong too! They need to be told that they're not out of the woods yet, whether they believe it or not. It should be no difference than telling them their labwork

I was going to comment this show was pushing the limits to be able to tell the storyline in a way that was less morally dubious on the part of the blonde doctor, but then I read some of these comments that make it clear a lot of people don't know the difference between an ectopic pregnancy and an extreme high risk pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy, even if there is a "heartbeat" (which isn't even really a heartbeat at that stage), has a 0% percent chance of viability. There are pregnancy complications that threaten the life of the mother but not necessarily the child, there are pregnancy complications that will make the pregnancy nonviable but still theoretically could be physically delivered if that matters to the mother, and then there is ectopic pregnancy. The possibility of bearing a child became so overwhelming emotional she couldn't make what was a sound decision; she would have died and in the old days no doubt women did, religious or not. Her delusional reasoning is what creates the conflict in the storyline. The ectopic happened to a friend of mine. The situation was a bit different but the pain and internal bleeding she experienced was killing her. The first inexperienced doctor said it was constipation. Thank God she got a second opinion in time to save her life.
Give me a break, PUH_LEASE. You cannot possibly believe that it is impossible for someone to not know about ectopic pregnancy. Seriously...? Between the state of general education, and the state of political and educational, family, and faith-based, interference in female knowledge of how their bodies work, and generally telling females we're not allowed to control our own bodies, and what is done to prevent us from knowing and doing...how are you surprised that it is at least CONCEIVABLE that someone wouldn't know/understand about ectopic pregnancy and it's complications and impacts? Okay, back to real world where we acknowledge the intersections of politics, faith, education, and gender, etc. and how it can blow up a person's life and life choices.

"There was a malfunction with the ultrasound". Thats literally impossible. Its fully technologist dependent. If you dont find a heartbeat that is there on a fetus that far along its because of you. And you would absolutely be held liable for missing something like this.

I had an ectopic pregnancy. It’s a terrifying experience and something I wouldn’t wish on anybody. I wanted my baby and was so excited. To have no option to keep your baby is soul crushing.
I respect the blunt and straightforward approach here, it may not be sentimental or comforting but no matter how kind and soft one approaches this scenario, it is a horrible and painful experience. No amount of sugar coating can remove that.
an experienced doctor doing something like that is already immoral and illegal, it blows my mind that a STUDENT doctor pulled a stunt like that. She jeopardized her entire medical career before she could even start it
You know, instead of lying to the patient and telling them that the heartbeat wasn’t there, you could just say that if they don’t do surgery, the mom and baby will die, and then you would loose everything. And then let them know they can always get pregnant again and then you could try to figure out why she couldn’t get pregnant and then she might consent to the surgery.

Why didn't they ever tell her that if she dies, the fetus will die too or that if she lets them save her, she'll have a chance of concieving another child? As long as she's alive, she has a chance of having another child. Why did they never tell her this?
I love Oliver Platt in this show. He seems to be the fatherly mentor to everyone and the calm in the storm of the ER. I wish it wasn’t taken off of Netflix
from the clips of this show i've seen with this Dr. Curry in them, i'm getting the feeling she's not very connected to the compassion side of being a doctor and just wants to bulldoze her way through patient care doing things her way, no compromise or listening to anyone else whatsoever.
I think this highlights a few issues. First, the flawed medical school system. Clearly she isn't cut out for patient work, but she could still be a brilliant contribution to the medical field. Forcing her to interact with patients when she isn't interested in that field is just negligent, a waste of time, and danger to patients. Next, the right of people to die is often taken out of their own hands. Left to suffer or make their own choices. Socially and biologically, it makes sense. Suicide is counterproductive to human survival. Which is weird cuz risking lives for the greater good is rewarded and praised but wanting to end one's own life is looked down on and seen as sick. Death is always such a fear for humans, and they have a hard time coping with someone wanting to give up their own life. I agree the mom was incredibly stupid. She is throwing away her life for nothing based on emotions and "beliefs". But in the end, she should have control over her own life. Let her die if she wants. Tell her that. She will die. No god will save her. Her baby will die. She will die. And she will leave her husband with that.
Its not a flawed medical school system- its a flaw on the character for choosing to go to medical school instead of pursuing health sciences. She could have been a biomedical engineer, or done research in many many of the biomedical sciences. Instead she chose to go to medical school. Medical school is vocational in the sense that the purpose of medical school is to become a doctor. If she cant work well with patients, she shouldnt have gone to medical school.
@@william2154 she said what she wanted to go into. Do you know if that job doesn't force you to go into medical school? So many times schools force you to go through something that doesn't fit your desired field. THAT is a flaw.
that's sadly the reality with flawed beliefs. People will die protecting their rights for empty promises and the "faith" that everything will be okay. Yes yes, belief CAN help people MENTALLY but if there is a physical, real problem that is possibly life-threatening or worse, no amount of faith will fix that. Then again, if the decision to die for your belief has fallen then... well... i can't see more than another number in the statistics against such things. It was wrong to lie to her and that med student could get into some hyper serious trouble but she had the rationality the pregnant woman had not. Unstoppable force, immovable object
@@william2154 For the area of research that she wants to do, the requirement is to go to medical school. And after graduating, you still have to train at a teaching hospital until you achieve your residency. She would prefer to never have to treat patients and just work in a lab.
Just going to add my two cents in. I believe she is in a MD/PhD programs same as me. The goal of the program is to become a physician scientist. You do your PhD in your field of bioengineering/research etc and you get your medical degree.
Oh man. There is soooo much done wrong. I'm actually shocked that Dr Charles did not discuss it the best way with the student doc. The way everyone is talking to her isn't going to get through to her, and she really does seem to have a whole lot of potential and just needs some readjusting with her focus. And a bit more understanding and respect. The woman was indeed delusional. Every one of those doctors also spoke to the mother wrong. Listen, it is a delusional belief. But, as a christian I can tell you, always referring to the fetus (even being that is what it is) to a christian who thinks god will solve everything without medical intervention and the baby is a miracle and this and that.. That isn't going to help bridge the divide to properly convey the message and help her see reason in a high stakes situation. What the student doc did was wrong, no doubt. That said.. I'm showing this video to a family member to remind me to show it to my doctors in any emergency situation with explicit instructions that if I ever become like this mother... do what the student doctor did. (I know I know.. kidding)
If i can be totally honest, i think its sick that people will prioritize being pregnant or having a baby over their own life. I dont understand how anyone could think "i would die in order to give birth, therefore leaving my child without me as a parent". Its not normal, and its a romanticization of happy family.

I agree with you ethically but legally patients must be informed despite of whether it will or wont have any present or future impact
Well. It’s unfortunate but you can’t lie on health records. You have to tell the patient the truth. It’s one of the core values we treasure in healthcare. Even when it’s a tragic situation. There would never be a good time to tell someone there was a malfunction.
Unfortunately yes she would. Because it went against her initial wishes it's a possible lawsuit and the files would indicate a heartbeat upon surgery that the patient could see. It's sad but that's the role doctors have to play.

"God will take care of it" reminds me of this story:
A storm descends on a small town, and the downpour soon turns into a flood. As the waters rise, the local preacher kneels in prayer on the church porch, surrounded by water. By and by, one of the townsfolk comes up the street in a canoe.
"Better get in, Preacher. The waters are rising fast."
"No," says the preacher. "I have faith in the Lord. He will save me."
Still the waters rise. Now the preacher is up on the balcony, wringing his hands in supplication, when another guy zips up in a motorboat.
"Come on, Preacher. We need to get you out of here. The levee's gonna break any minute."
Once again, the preacher is unmoved. "I shall remain. The Lord will see me through."
After a while the levee breaks, and the flood rushes over the church until only the steeple remains above water. The preacher is up there, clinging to the cross, when a helicopter descends out of
the clouds, and a state trooper calls down to him through a megaphone.
"Grab the ladder, Preacher. This is your last chance."
Once again, the preacher insists the Lord will deliver him.
And, predictably, he drowns.
A pious man, the preacher goes to heaven. After a while he gets an interview with God, and he asks the Almighty, "Lord, I had unwavering faith in you. Why didn't you deliver me from that flood?"
God shakes his head. "What did you want from me? I sent you two boats and a helicopter."

Eventhough my siblings and I knew giving them blood would save them, we respected their choice and told the doctors every chance they came asking, no blood. Luckily my parent survived but at the end of the day, we and their doctors respected their decision to not accept blood, eventhough they were on death's doorstep.

@@stevismymum5121 3 years of struggling is a sign that one of them struggles with fertility issues. She may not get pregnant again
“Where beliefs end and reality begins” is such a deep line.
It's not assisted suicide, it's refusal of care. But I agree.
@@thatonedog819 she was dying, if the fetus stayed there she would have died. it is essentially suicide once you are aware on what is happening but refuse to fix it.
Finally a good explication of the situation. I totally agree!

This is one of the many, many, many reasons why I'm an atheist. I don't think any of the doctors really tried to explain this.
@@Lespritdelescali The mother was holding on to the miracle of conception after trying for so long but wouldn't accept that her life was in danger (as she was slowly dying).
(I know I know.. kidding)
I would have made sure she never practiced medicine again. If this how she is as a student I wouldn’t want her near me as a doctor.
If i can be totally honest, i think its sick that people will prioritize being pregnant or having a baby over their own life. I dont understand how anyone could think "i would die in order to give birth, therefore leaving my child without me as a parent". Its not normal, and its a romanticization of happy family.
not to forget the stress it puts onto the now single father, I applaud the women who have chosen to have children whilst having complications and i applaud the men who have stood up to be a father when they have no choice.
Ikr?? Why would you leave your future offspring in a position to be raised by one parent, who will definitely be stressed out?
That actually seems pretty cruel.
It's still their right to choose, but I will never understand it.
because it's an emotional logic there is no reasoning. it's the pure will to reproduce... which is still dumb in my opinion choosing death over this ....
Isn't that the logic of "her body, her choice"?
They always forgot the option to adopt do they? If looking after a child is that important, there are a lot of other options
Can the couple sue the hospital in this case?
I think they can but they would have to get proof that the blonde woman really did it on her behalf.
Yep
Yes it wrongful birth claim.
The blonde nurse has no compassion, show no bed side manner. She did save the mother life but at what cost. A woman body is still yet undetermined in medical studies. Not to mention she not the doctor but a resident not everything is textbooks. That poor mother loss her child. Her only miracle baby.
@@annawalcott7487 it wasn't a miracle baby, it wasn't a viable fetus at all. It was dead from the start because it was never gonna amount to anything but the death of itself and the mother. And no, since the machine malfunctioned and they can't prove the Curry did anything, then it's just a unfortunate circumstance. If they had neglected to tell them that the baby did in fact still have a heartbeat, then it would have been grounds for a lawsuit

It literally doesn't matter what she believes or why. It's her body, it's her coice. Why is that so hard for doctors to understand?
Jeez it's almost like some folks actually care about people and don't wanna see them suffer or die🤷🏽 gosh what's wrong these compassionate caring doctors.
It’s very interesting that there wasn’t a recommendation to bring in a religious representative to speak with her and way her options. Having a medical support staff explain the medical portion and the religious person help with any religious questions may have eased the patient into making a comfortable decision.
I don't think it was a question of religion. She wasn't really refusing an operation because it was forbidden by her religion. She was rather being too optimistic to the point of being delusional about the her medical condition.
"For 12 years, I've been wanting to bring a baby into this world..."
sorry sis, you won't be bringing the kid into the world when you're dead before he gets born.
Ya😢
Honestly I wouldn't have told her in the end. Ignorance is bliss. She could have gone the rest of her life without knowing she consented to it when the baby was still alive, even if she did it unknowingly
Yes I don’t get it why tell her
Because patients have rights
Absolutely love dr. Charles. Of she did it once she’ll do it again and let’s be honest the poor woman probably wasn’t the first but she was definitely the last❤
Maybe the first but won't be the last
8:42, this reminds me of my sister. She will stand right Infront of you and deny something she knows you saw her do and if you insist, she will cry or turn it on you like you are trying to harm her by lying about her doing it!
People trying to bring a new life to the world while there are so much existing life to save.
Omg. You know it's bad if Dr Charles is getting angry like that
'god will take care of it" lmaooo god will be taking your life. 😭
Yes and some people are honestly fine with that. We're not suicidal but we're also not afraid of die. If it's our time, it's our time.
@@LxstinNeverland Passively suicidal.
@@xtinkerbellax3 Acceptance of death isn't suicidal. Rejection of death is delusional.
Gods not the type of person to be like “welp sucks for you time to die” god can do miracles unless you experience it for yourself you will be forever blinded
@@midnight_x_edits I'm an agnostic so I don't even believe in your statement
a very dark thing to happen in a hospital, when dishonesty covertly gets what a doctor wants. The psychological pain must be off the charts , when you ponder just how stressful and twisted the situation was, concerning a pregnancy.
"This baby is a miracle and God will take care of it"
Then why the flip did you come to a hospital!
Sometimes God works through people. If you knew anything about God, you'd understand that.
@@AS-yz2iz well, not everyone believes in God, and i think we should appreciate doctors for who they are and not like their some tool of God.
@@Klearith Of course we should appreciate doctors for all their hard work and expertise. But those who believe can do that while understanding that God gave them those talents to begin with, and the people themselves then developed and perfected them.
@@AS-yz2iz religion is created to control large populations of people. It's also a coping mechanism
Religion really outstayed it's welcome. Maybe it got us through some tough situations, but now it only ruins lives and makes people delusional.
