Hyelllloo!!!! Apparently 2020 is a year where I just say "FLUFF IT" and dive head-first into making my dream dresses. So, next up on my list is the armor/Joan of Arc-inspired gown that Zendaya wore to the 2018 Met Gala. It has just been living rent-free (as the kids say) in my head since I laid eyes on it, so I NEEDED to recreate it. I always love costume projects that involve more than just sewing, and this was a perfect opportunity for me to make some worbla armor and do some WEATHERING, hehe.
I hope you all enjoy!!!

This is a mindblowing moment. I love both of you guys!!!!
HOLY SHIT ITS NERD FORGE
I love your dioramas Martina!
Hi all! So as an update, I did INDEED pronounce Zendaya's name wrong which is super embarrassing and I'm really sorry 😔 but unfortunately I cannot go back and change it so please be kind 😭😔
Don’t worry Rachel, that is the correct pronunciation in portuguese, so.... we can say that you just spoke another language
It happens to the best of us! Almost no one gets my (real) name right! And its not a big deal 😊 ❤️
I definitely should have looked it up beforehand to be sure 😔🤦♀️
You spent days recreating her look because you thought it was so cool and she rocked it, the love shines through.
@@rachelmaksy to be fair you were working on two videos that week, so 😌
As a medieval recreationist I am laughing myself silly, because that is EXACTLY how armour articulation works. Congratulations Rachel, on your engineering brilliance.
Hahaha YAY 😂❤️❤️❤️
When I saw the thumbnail, I expected a recreation in actual steel
Ex-jouster here. SAME. Nicely done, Rachel!
Also, the waistline in terms of function. Rachel's is better. I cannot understand how all those cinema things came to the conclusion that a single steel plate should be worn from shoulder to hip (I always imagine two knights dueling... like those air blown tube garage mascots floating around when I see that). Waist, and then tassets people!
The hairstyle of that wig actually looks really flattering on you.
Right? The dark wig along with her eyebrow shape really suits her, even more than the red.
And look at her now!
@@LePezzy66 I was literally just thinking about this comment I made after I saw her new hair! I was wondering which video it was, my brain was saying Joan of Arc for some reason lol!

"If I were me, where would I put that thing?" is a mental game I didn't even realize I played with myself until you put it into words.
Protip: Once you find the thing, put it back in the first place you looked for it. Because that's where you intuitively think it should belong, and is thus where you're going to look for it first every time.
Hahahaha I'm glad I'm not the only one 😂😂😂
@@sonipitts that's genius right there...

The information that Rachel learned to do the sword swing/twirl thing because she used to do it in field hockey (presumably with hockey sticks, and not swords) Is information that I now will keep precious and dear to me in future.
This info is a little late for this video, but both sides of Worbla are adhesive when heated. The smooth side was just the underside when rolled out during production. Worbla itself is basically wood shavings and hot glue all mixed up and rolled into super thin sheets.
Love how the outfit looks and the hip plates in particular are fantastic!
Honestly people should start casually wearing armor/armor themed clothes out in public

Hahaha so DEMANDING
Hi Rachel! I noticed you've used worbla on a couple of projects now, and I thought I would pass on some tips I learned in a class with a professional cosplayer!
While cutting out pieces from the worbla, you can but the edges right up against each other. Never throw out any scraps, because the pieces can be heated up and merged back together to make bigger pieces....you also can use the scraps for sculpting details, for example, rolling them into snakes and using them to define the edges of the plates.
Instead of using 2 pieces of worbla back-to-back, use a sheet of foam on the backside. this adds support, and gives the pieces thickness, without the added weight or expense. Really the only time you need to layer 2 pieces back-to-back is if you are making a piece with a dome, like defined chest plates or helmets, and its really just for the stretch factor, to keep the piece from getting to thin.
Instead of plastidip, you can use 2-3 coats of PVA glue, and it will smooth out the surface, once again, saving a few bucks!
Hope its helpful!
Your dress turned out fantastic! I'm 100% with you, I've been unable to forget this dress since I saw it, and I think you absolutely nailed it!

I just want to say that I have been following cosplayers and making cosplay for YEARS now. I love working with worbla. But not a single cosplayer has mentioned that the smooth side is the adhesive side. This entire time I've been using the rough sides together when i use it. Thank you Rachel, thank you.

If you're dealing with a particularly stubborn/badly wrinkled piece, try misting it with a spray bottle of water first.
Give the fibers a minute or two, to absorb the moisture and 'relax' and try ironing it then.

Not gonna lie when you were trying on the worbla neck piece with the black blouse it looked like a bomb victorian shirt. The poofy sleeves on that thing are so heckin perfect! 😍
Rachel, I LOVE how this came out! You totally killed it with the tassets too! (Tassets are those hanging upper leg / hip armor plates). Your engineering of anchoring the plates on the three strips was solid too (I've used that before in building real armor). I like your finished result better than the original, and the location video shoot is SO PERFECT. The castle and the dramatic weather were perfection. I admit I was a little concerned with a couple choices of the original dress designer that were less historically mindful of real armor (the studded belt as part of the armor at the waist and the decision to make the edges of the shoulders overlap the top edge rather than the bottom edge of the gorget sides and making them look like slightly misplaced miniature rondels). However, the way you reduced the contrast of the "shoulder hinge pins" by making everything silver (rather than the original whiter contrast) was lovely, and the belt worked! You also taught me something new with the googley eyes trick for rivets (which I will use hereafter if I ever try working with worbla and need to simulate rivets). The costume armor I have built previously has been of leather and real rivets - probably because of having some armoring background and sewing background and art background but no worbla, plastidip, etc experience (yet). I have been enjoying your videos so much and appreciate all of your hard work and awesome projects. I also love seeing your personality and soul in these projects (like your admiration of Jeanne d'Arc)!
