- Here's what many of you asked for, how to use a VOR in the real airplane, live somewhere over the midwest on our way to Alaska in the Cessna! We'll show you here how to tune and identify the station, as well as how to center the needle and fly towards the station, or determine where you are relative to the station.

Amazing video. VOR navigation is one of those topics that seem so overwhelming at first, and one day to another, it just clicks.
Definitely agree with that one. Thanks for checking out the video!
Lmao this video made it click for me. Fuck some people are so bad at explaining and i got a good grasp just from this dude
Finally an actually very helpful practical use video on VOR navigation. Thank you!!!
Glad it helped ya!
I love this new intro. After many long nights of grinding away on the ground school, that old one (that was always just a bit too loud) really triggers some sort of PTSD in me.
You are excellent as usual but because I love what you do I advise you to be slower add zoom in with more time on the steps for beginners like us so we can follow and make sure that we do it right thanks a lot
I had a few people try to explain VORs to me, but it didn’t really click till I watched your videos! Thank you!
Glad it worked out for you!
Great refresher! Thanks for posting this lesson! Happy/Safe Flying!
The best part of this video is that you were enroute towards our house!!!! And now I am a graduate of premium ground school and boot camp and passed my written exam!!!! And I understand how to use VORs just in time for them to disappear 🙌🏼
Hahaha! Yup! We were flying to Nebraska that day. Hopefully you get to use them for a few years before they're all gone!
Awesome channel. I used to fly 6 years in Sierra. Minden NV. What an awesome place.
Thank you! I've never used the G5 before and this is really helpful
When I was training VOR was the main navigation aid, I have use some GPS, even used some ADF. Funny how things change. I knew a couple guys with LORAN C
Thanks for a very informative video.
Thank you for making this video! Was looking for how to use a G5 and the to/from on a VOR with it. This helped me understand what the arrows meant. Thanks!
Same here. That helped immensely! The manual is sorely lacking in explaining any of this.
I would like to see a quick panel tour sometime explaining all the goodies👍🏽
It may come along in the near future!
another great video. thanks man
What an epic intro:0
CFI ground school? Oh man, I can't wait for that.
Another super lesson, Jon. Hope you two are having fun!
Another great video, thanks :)
And now flying a G5 /430 equipped 172… a good review
you are the best!
💡 Man U jus simplified it all for me jus now. Thanks!!!
You bet!
Thank you very much man!❤
You're welcome!
Great video
Next video needs to be intercepting a course, first with the old school Nav 2 vor then with that fancy HSI. Nice video.
great video thanks for sharing
Thanks for checking us out!
Man Ur just awesome 👌🤘
I appreciate that!
Can you do a video with some tips for private pilots who haven't flown in 5+ years and are interested in getting back in the air?
That's how I 'cheated' on my 3 leg cross country solo flight prior to getting my SEL private pilot's license I plotted VR routes to point B, point C, and back to point A on my sectionals, noting landmarks along the routes for corroboration of 'dead reckoning.'
Hi thank you for this video. I have question why did you put the radial on top ,and you flying to the VOR why you did not put it done or only with interception we need to do that please correct me and explain.
John, which "affordable" ADS-B do you recommend and why? I understand that Stratus 3 allows one to use their cellular wi-fi, which is a great feature. Also, its best to have ADS-B IN and OUT? If you have already made a video covering this, please share link. Look forward to your reply. Happy/Safe Flying!
You are legal to fly IFR because the Garmin 430 is WAAS certified, correct?
My question is, will the AP then fly you direct TO the VOR once Id'd and tuned in for Nav 1 or Nav 2 (VOR), if you select those sources on the AP and make sure your CDI is set to the
proper Nav source?
I am a pilot and you did a great job but the video was to show how you fly with a VOR. This was suppose to be for a novice and you explained it way too fast for those who wish to know the working of a VOR. The video was really about making sure your VOR is working properly.
But a great video for an experienced pilot.

Why did your GPS map have a yellow $4.95 lit up over what looks like Kirksville ?
bcherbs Fuel prices at the FBO
Thanks for the video. Can anyone tell me why G5s don't show DME in the VOR/LOC mode but do when in GPS mode?
Because it’s not a dedicated DME receiver, meaning it’s not receiving a UHF frequency; it can only determine distance based on triangulating GPS signals, so it only works in that mode.
You still in Missouri?
What year is this?
When the GPS down in IMC or dark night, you will be glad to have a VOR...
What if you’re not flying to a station though? How do you use vor to fly cross country?
You have to either hop from one VOR to the next; or use 2 VORs, see which radial makes each one center up, and determine your location that way.
more easy to catch
Why does VOR 2 show “to” on 082 radial? You’re flying 262 course, so I’d expect vor 2 indicate “from” for 082.
Flying away FROM the station on the 262 radial, because all the radials emanate FROM the hub (the VOR). Flying TO the station, is the same as flying from the station on the reciprocal radial.
What did I miss? If the airborne check is +/- 6 degrees why wouldn't the 4.5 degree difference pass?
Explained quickly at the end of the video. Key word is “dual”, 4 degrees between each CDI regardless of whether you’re on the ground or airborne when comparing 2 CDIs.
Dual VOR check between two different VORs receivers should be within 4 degrees. This is regardless of airborne or on the ground, as you're trying to match the CDI between the two VORs in the plane.
The +/- 6 degree tolerance for an airborne check only applies for an airborne checkpoint. In this case, you can test each VOR separately, and each VOR has to be within +/- 6 degrees. The difference is you're not checking the VORs against each other in this case.
FAR Sec. 91.171 4(c) does not indicate while on the ground or airborn. It simply states, " If dual system VOR (units independent of each other except for the antenna) is installed in the aircraft, the person checking the equipment may check one system against the other in place of the check procedures specified in paragraph (b) of this section. Both systems shall be tuned to the same VOR ground facility and note the indicated bearings to that station. The maximum permissible variation between the two indicated bearings is 4 degrees."
John, have you heard about Foreflight moving to Android as main platform, no longer Apple/IOS? Thanks.
I believe you have 6 degrees of swing in the air for a VOR airborne...
John. Please help your career..stop saying "go ahead and" you say it almost continuously. Not professional, irritating
