  • The WiFi thermostat shown in the video (updated version): amzn.to/3Q99dq5
    This is a subscriber requested video. In this video I show my installation of a smart WiFi Honeywell thermostat to control my Mr Heater Big Maxx shop heater.
    To use a regular simple mechanical thermostat you only need to use the two wires. But, to use a smart thermostat you also need to use the C or common wire. In my case I also wire the fan separately.
    If you need help drop me a comment below and I'll do my best. If you have any doubts as to your own abilities, call a professional to do the work.

    And if you mess up the wiring order and you hear a pop, the board contains a small plug in fuse. Don't order a new board, thinking the board is fried. Don't ask me how I know. Posting for a friend.

    I really enjoyed your video. It was very comprehensive with lots of visuals. The thermostat on my Big Maxx died. My old thermostat is two wire but I ran 5 wire to it. The wire I ran was for thermostats but looks more like doorbell wire, (thin) compared to your wire. Do you think it will be fine since it's only 24v?

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  10 місяців тому

      Doorbell wire should be fine, they run on 24V also (to my knowledge).

      @@InternetDude I installed the thermostat. However, there is something wrong with the main board (I think). I thought my old thermostat was bad since it wasn't tuning the unit on and off as it always did. THe new thermostat is doing the same thing.... I'll be calling Mr. Heater to see what they say.

    Great video and answered a lot of questions I had about changing my controller to a wifi one. But I don't understand the fan wire. I know I need the c-wire, but what does the fan wire do? Will my fan not work if I don't have one? I was thinking I could just run an additional wire to get the c-wire. But now I'm confused.

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  Рік тому +2

      The fan wire is optional, it simply allows you to manually turn on the fan only using the thermostat. If you do not wire the fan wire, the fan will come on like normal during the normal heating cycle.

    Does the screen work no matter what temperature it is? I currently have a 2 wire with a digital screen that disconnects. However as I am in a cold climate with a current average of 0c during the winter it won’t work to startup if it is to cold. I then have to disconnect it and warm it up in the house before I can use it. The joys of being a new homeowner…

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  7 місяців тому

      Hmm I'm not sure. If you check the owners manual for the thermostat you have it may indicate its operating temperature range. If you don't need WiFi access you could install a mechanical thermostat which would work in the cold for sure.

    Not sure anyone will see this but I have Mr heater 175k btu gas tube radiant heater and from what I can tell there is only a hot and neutral connection no common so I think it’s impossible to connect a WiFi thermostat I tried multiple options. Even the google nest with the c wire adapter that I think is supposed to solve that problem. If anyone has a work around it would be great. Here is a link to the installing guide. Wiring diagram on page 18 sec 7.

    I have a reznor heater in my garage. It works just when i adjust thermostat it kicks on, but then once it reaches that temperature and shuts off it doesn’t kick in again. Like i have to go down and move the thermostat around for it to kick in again. Do you have any ideas behind that?

      3:02 R=red W=white C=black and G=blue you can use whatever colors you want as long as you match the colors on the other end at the thermostat itself.

    I got my newer Honeywell T5 Smart Thermostat. I hooked it all up but no power to the thermostat. I called Mr. Heater and they are saying that even though the unit supports 4 wire thermostats that the heater does not supply power to the thermostat. My other thermostat used a battery. Honeywell does sell a 24v c wire adapter to power the thermostat but my unit is o ly 5 years old. This doesn't sound right. Any suggestions?

    • @frankparisi2433

      The wires are wired to the main board. Why give a "C" terminal with no power.

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  10 місяців тому

      Wow that’s strange maybe Mr Heater changed something. You can test for power on the C terminal I’m not sure how exactly you’d have to look it up. The only workaround I’m aware of is the separate power supply.

      OK. Tech support was wrong the heater does in fact put out 24v. However, I tried changing out thecmain board because I can't get the unit to work with the thermostat. I tried my older 2 wire setup and the newer 4 wire wifi thermostat. It always worked until ot didn't.

    What is the lowest temperature that the thermostat will let you set in heat mode? My current Emerson Sensi will not let me set the temperature below 10C - I would like to set it around 5 to save on heating cost when I'm not out in the garage. Thanks!

      I'm not sure, I suspect not. There are a few alternatives to add a C wire including a transformer near the thermostat.

  • @jdel1976
    @jdel1976 5 років тому

    I'm having the issue where the fan power cycles because I'm not getting any grnd to the thermostat. The furnace works great but when it shuts off, the fan cycles off and on. I have the Common connected to the C on the smart thermostat but when I put a multimeter on the Red and Common wire, it does not read voltage. Should read 24V. I have the same setup except my thermostat is a nest.

      Hmmm I would say yes if the heater has the C terminal and you wire that to the thermostat in addition to the other two required (existing) wires.

    I want to add a wifi thermostat to my older (1990) gas shop furnace but there is only 2 wires coming from furnace and they are just wire nutted to 2 random wires. There is no spot with labeled (W R G C) on furnace. Will I need to just run an extra wire from the existing one that has the power? I think one wire is acting as power and heat and the other would just be fan, idk

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  3 роки тому

      Yes you will have to add the C common power wire. If I was you I'd just run new wiring but if the wiring is OK you could get away with just running one additional wire. I have done it both ways. It is critical you tap into the C terminal on the furnace. Google it to find an owners manual for your model furnace. Or you could try asking grayfurnaceman on UA-cam.

    The manuals for the Big Maxx say the igniter causes RF interference therefore a microprocessor controlled thermostat is not recommended. But it seems yours is doing just fine - any issues like that yet?
    Also - I had a guy say I can't have GFCI protection on the power feed to the heater because it will trip the GFCI every time it tries to light the burner.
    Does any of that make sense?
    Thanks!

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude  5 років тому +1

      I’m not sure about the GFCI thing but that could be true. As for the thermostat it’s been installed for at least 9 months and has been just fine.
