    As an engineer myself, I think it's interesting to mention that code itself is not such a big deal.
    It's more about everything around it. So how it's made, what is left behind etc.

    I guess what I hope for when source code leaks, is new variants on old games. Like ROM hacks, but on a deeper level. Sure you can edit levels in A Link to the Past, but you can't really add in new items with different behaviours. With the source code available, you could have new gameplay mechanics not possible with ROM hacks.
    Things like this is why I was overjoyed when I discovered Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, because they were the same style as Link's Awakening, but with new ideas and maps and gameplay mechanics.

      I can understand where you're coming from when it comes it a language's portability, but I mean, imho the Super Mario 64 PC port seems pretty legit overall. Even some of the original's graphical errors have been preserved, and while I haven't fully beaten it, the first half of the game I played seems super accurate to the original outside of HD resolutions and widescreen support.
      I'm not trying to sound rude, but if any of these SNES games get a PC port that's of similar quality to the Super Mario 64 PC port, I'd be content with personally calling it a proper PC port. I'd be curious to see anyone try and play the originals on native hardware versus a fan PC port to see if any significant desyncs arise.

    Back in 2016 I found an undocumented trick in Super Mario Kart even without the source code. At least, I couldn't find any mention of it online.
    If you only have a controller plugged into one controller port, the SNES can tell and games will often adapt. For example, Super Mario World and Super Mario All*Stars will let you play a 2P game by passing the controller back and forth. It will even prevent you from playing the 2P simultaneous Battle Game in Super Mario Bros 3. Anyway, I was playing around with this and wanted to see if Super Mario Kart would let me play a single player game with the 2P controller. When both controllers are plugged in it will let the 2P controller operate the menu selections too only it will not let that player pick a 1P mode.
    ...unless you hold L+R and press Start. That will let you play a 1P game using the 2P controller, only you will be playing on the bottom half of the screen with the map on top (reverse of the usual way). I posted an image gallery about it on Imgur.

      @@TheRealSinjinsmyth I know that there is a way to do this during replays but L & R are used during game play so if you unlocked it there then that it really cool!
      Before I owned any SNES games I renter Ren & Stimpy Veediots and would let the game demos loop on the title screen. After I pressed a bunch of stuff randomly I set I controller down and thought the demo had started showing the stage where Stimpy floats down an esophagus or something. It was a stage I had not managed to play up to yet and I was only aware of it through the demo. I soon realized that Stimpy was getting hurt and was not moving like he normally would during the demo. I grabbed the controller and, sure enough, I was playing the stage. Unfortunately, I realized this too late to avoid dying and I didn't get to do anything with it. :(

      But, you know. Last I checked my collection of books didn't require some proprietary device that's incompatible with any other to be able to read any given set of books...
      Game preservation has this very peculiar and awkward problem of having to deal with the fact that arguably the hardware and game are inter-related, an cannot easily be seperated from one another like they can in any other medium.
      My VHS copy of Back to the Future can be salvaged simply by copying the video stream to a different medium, and the copy will be as good as the tape I got it from and the method I used to copy it.
      The copy of Sim City 2000 rotting away on floppy disks won't work just because I transfer it to a new storage medium, a whole heap of other technical stuff would have to be altered as well to get it to keep working...
      Game preservation is in a uniquely vulnerable position, and it's all well and good to create laws that say it's legally protected for going on 2 centuries...
      But many of these games are on hardware and storage media that likely won't survive 50 years without major conservation efforts...
      So either we break the law to preserve this stuff, or it vanishes into the ether.
      Granted, a company like Nintendo that's still going strong and evidently does a decent job of internal preservation is less of a concern here, but the principle still stands that if we do not do something then this is a disaster waiting to happen, and we will lose a ton of gaming history forever...

      Nah, they probably just dumped the ROM in a similar fashion to those online. If there ROM has no header you'd hope they'd be identical. If Nintendo has their source code lying and I'm sure they've got spare carts and ways to dump the ROMs sitting around too. (They would have ROM dumpers to investigate and find ways to thwart piracy)

      These mappers were numerous and each acts differently from each other, so just having the raw data from the roms isn't enough to emulate the game as you'd need to know the mapper the game uses (if it uses any), whether or not it has a battery etc, this info is only available to you when you open the cart, thanks to this necessity the iNES format was born.

NES ROMs straight up do not contain the information about the hardware of the cart that is stored in the iNES header, so the guy they hired who worked on iNES used the same format because it already existed, rather than wasting time to make a new format.

      There's not really a way to do that. The code is in ASM, so you can't just make it x86. Your best bet is a psuedo-emulator. Look at the Sonic 3 AIR project to see what I mean.

    I'm very happy to see this stuff too. I mean think about it. There is a possibility that the source code for many Nintendo classic games can be used to do stuff like run in 16:9 native so that simply more level data can be shown on screen at once than the original 4:3 resolution offered.
    Or at the very least, this can help out rom hackers who remix retro games into new experiences.

    I've been a strong proponent of open source almost as long as the SNES has been a thing and having this source code available is really quite cool. Of course, you could always decompile ROMs and run them through a debugger in an emulator, but this is different, this is the *official* (as far as we know) code, with comments as you've shown in your video. Granted, at least some of the comments are Japanese, but it shouldn't be a problem to get them translated. There are also some related artefacts, like bug reports for a Zelda game, that we've never seen before. That kind of thing might be useful for speedrunners, though I'm not sure if you're going to get your run into a GDQ or the like if you submit it with strats you got from reading leaked bug reports. :D
    Also, really nice callback to your previous video with ending this one with the Doom soundtrack. I see (or, rather, heard) what you did there, and I appreciate it.

    Did they found prototypes ROMs of SUPER MARIO WORLD!, or they just early sprites?
    Because one of the things I want to do before death is to play at least one genuine prototype of Super Mario World and Sonic 1 (Especially the very first prototype of Sonic 1 from 1990).

    • @vgtheory
      @vgtheory 4 роки тому

      If the source is separated into different versions representing the course of development, then theoretically different builds could be generated as roms in much the same way as we have the Sonic 2/3/CD prototypes. There were enough differences in the early prototypes of SMW that I would love to see what they had running when those original photos were in the magazines back in the day.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 4 роки тому +3

      @@Minsc I don't understand how that works, Source code gets leaked, emulation authors look at it, see how the actual consoles do things, they change their code to better replicate the real thing, although not using any actual code from Nintendo, Nintendo shuts them down for...?
      For looking at leaked documents? As far as I know, looking at leaked information isn't illegal. I also don't think acting on leaked information is illegal. I'm not a lawyer, but I would think it would only be illegal if they took parts of Nintendo's source code and incorporated it into their program.
      For example: Let's say that an emulation author can't figure out how music data is stored in games. He looks at leaked source code to see how the real console does it. Then he writes a completely different music player (because the code is for completely different hardware) for his emulator based on that information. Has he committed a crime even though he didn't use any of their code?
