Spectacular day in the canyon! Good flip!
Great vid and quite the send off on Cheesman. My best fishing buddy now lives 12 hours away, and we still make sure we meet up to fish once or twice/year. It'll be extra special next time you guys fish. Hope to see ya on the water some day.
Yeah, I hope we see each other as well. Take care, Matt.
Sad your buddy is moving. I know how you feel, one of my friends retired to Arizona last year. We talk every week. It’s not hard to keep in touch. It will make the next time you fish together even more memorable. Loved the video. I will be there in October, your videos help pass the time till I get back to Colorado.
Thanks Paul. I’m sure John and I will reunite on the river one of these days. Good luck when you return in October. I’m grateful that you enjoy our videos. -Tim
Very nice! I need to try Cheesman one of these weekends, doubt I'll do this well though. Sorry about your friend leaving, I feel you.
Tim - What a wonderful video tribute to John. Great friends and fishing buds are a hard to find combo. Congrats on a spectacular day in Cheesman. Looking forward to your future videos.
Thank you, Gary. I really appreciate your kind words and for watching our videos. -Tim
Love your channel, can’t say how many times I’ve re watched your vids
Thanks, Matt. That means a lot. I’m grateful you enjoy them. -Tim
I really appreciate this video. Fly fishing is about friends and relationships. Thank you for sharing. The fish Gods smiled on your last trip together!!!
Thank you for the kind comment. I agree. Developing friendships on the water is the greatest reward. -Tim
Awesome video! You did really well. Gotta back up into cheeseman some time soon.
Thanks, Flicky Flies! Good luck when you head back there. -Tim
Wow, I've been dying to go to Cheesman. Sorry you lost your fishing buddy, but way to make it memorable.
That last one was absolutely oinking. Nice catch Tim.
Thanks, Dan! Yeah, he was a big one for sure.
Great video. Although you don’t post often I love watching your videos when they are released. My buddy and I took Friday, 6/18, off work and went to Cheesman. I’m pretty sure that was my dorky graphite Subaru Outback you parked next to at the lower trailhead! We had the 1st spot in the lot next to the h-cap spot. Did you happen to notice the flow increase around 11 that day? We had fun fishing around the Jamboree Pool but you guys were landing some tanks in the upper section! I’ve fished the upper section during super low flows and loved it. Not sure about fishing that section with 250 flows but you guys killed it. Great video, and great tribute to your friend. Was the upper section crowded? The lower section was a zoo. Nice work!
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, we had the dam side to ourselves. We only ran into three other anglers all day. I didn’t notice any bump in the flow but come to think of it, the water got a little murkier in the afternoon. -Tim
Great video you guys always do a great job. I noticed one of your rods is a Moonshine and wanted to know how you like fishing that rod. I think I've seen you using Sage as well. Thanks Jeff
I really like it. It’s a 6wt 9’ Midnight Special. It’s fast action with a medium tip. It’s great for throwing streamers but will still stick fish while nymphing just fine. -Tim
You'll fish with your buddy again. Someday ill get to Colorado and throw some flies. Always like watching your videos.
Thanks, Don. I hope you do fish out here soon. -Tim
Nice Video!
Thank you. I’m grateful you enjoyed it. -Tim
Giving Cheeseman a shot next Wednesday while on vacation. Would you recommend the North or South trail for a first-timer? And any other advice? Love your channel/videos and have been re-watching many of them trying to prepare!
Probably try your hand on the north trailhead for a first trip. Always check the flows before you go. Between 100cfs-400cfs is good for that canyon. Thanks for watching I appreciate it. -Tim
Just starting watching CFF, awesome video. I’ve fished Deckers never the canyon need to get there. Thank you for the video and sharing your technique.
Question? Do you sell your CFF coins, nice coin, would love to have one.
Thanks.
Alvaro, I’m grateful that you enjoy my videos. I don’t have any coins for sale. I keep a few with me and hand them out when I run into anglers on the river. Shoot me an email with a mailing address and I’ll throw a couple in the mail for you. -Tim
Hi Tim,
Appreciate it, will send you an email thru your CFF website. Just orders your book as well, can’t wait to read it. Thank You Again, maybe run into you on the water. Line tight.
Had the same thing happen to me, it seems as if when your together you both fish better
Man you make cheesman look so easy!
Nah, just one of those days when everything was clicking. -Tim
What section of gill trail and what dam did you guys hike in? And what season was this.
Awesome vids and catches man
Wow what's a trip! You guys had a great day, Memories stacked! How long is that hike?
It’s just over a mile, but it’s a tough mile. -Tim
I'm a native, I don't fish the south platte anymore, its combat fishing, even in the middle of the week, 35 + yrs ago I use to fish the dream stream before it was called that, between Eleven mile and spinney, the fish were way more wild and spookey back then, now the fish are conditioned, easier to catch now.
I learned about the cheesman canyon because of you two and this channel! Now I spend every Sunday deep in the canyon.
That’s fantastic! I’m grateful that you enjoy our videos. -Tim
is it a touch hike? how far is it?
Are u throwing just one fly at a time? Or do u have a attractor and something on the end of that
Usually at least two flies, sometimes three. It depends on the time of year and the flows on whether I’ll use an attractor fly or just fish what’s hatching. -Tim
Where can I get a copy of the soundtrack it's amazing! Do you use tippet rings or double surgens knots.
Gage, Metallica “Turn the Page” I use super glue to connect my tippet! -Timbo Slice
So I’ve fished the North Platte all over the place but not so much the South Platte, not sure why ..,but I’m now planning a trip with my dad. He’s pretty old and has a hard time hiking to far. Is there any easy access at Cheeseman or is it all a hike? Thanks
Only access in there is hiking. The north trail is not as challenging as the south end, but it still may be too tough for him.
I's a TOUGH hike from the damn end, and river access is VERY Challenging, make sure you check river flows before you head in the upper section...
Do you grease your fly line to avoid using an indicator? I didn't see a indicator when you were fishing by the gauge. Thanks
No. Typically I'm nymphing one of three ways, tight line with no indicator, indicator, or sight fishing with no indicator in clear water where I'm just watching the trout to see if it moves to the fly. I change it up depending on the run. -Tim
@@CombatFlyFishing most impressive! Tim, your channel is still my favorite fly fishing channel!!
@@ruebdogg1 thank you. I appreciate the kind words.
Hey just wondering where I park to start my hike to get right below the damn where you started your video off?
Here is a link to my website. On this page I give detailed information about Cheesman Canyon to include a printable topo map with all the names of each fishing hole. -Tim

Is this place usually fishable in mid-June?
It’s a tail water, so it’s fishable year round. -Tim
how tough is the Hike?
Moderate hike in and a difficult hike out. Maneuvering the river banks will sap your energy too, so it's a good idea to be in relatively good shape and bring plenty of water or a filtration system. -Tim
Curios what technique are you using there? Is it euro nymphing?
It really depends on the type of water I’m fishing. For instance, the deep runs that I can get my rod tip over I am using a Straight Line nymphing technique. For the clear runs where I’m spotting to a specific trout, I’m sight nymphing and watching the trout for a variance of behavior when my flies drift through it’s zone. (Flash of the trout’s mouth or movement towards the flies) When the water is murkier, I’ll usually go traditional indicator nymphing. Most of the fish I caught in this video I sight nymphed to. -Tim
Is this at the top of the canyon?
It sure is. Dam end of the canyon. -Tim
@@CombatFlyFishing I frequent the canyon and have never made it to the very end. Which way did you approach? From the parking lot and walking in or from the dam and doing the 1000ft + elevation descent into the canyon? Looks like I am missing out on some good fish!
@@conorlinehan4434 yep. We hiked in from the dam side entrance to the Gill Trail.
I want to go to Chessman so bad. What rig were you using and how were you fishing it.
I used a 4wt floating line. Tight line nymphing for most of the day. -Tim
@@CombatFlyFishing cool. Thank you
