Something I saw on another video as fanon which I love. "Not confirmed, but I'm pretty sure everytime Count Bleck speaks, he is actually reading his own lines in the Dark Prognosticus. It explains why he refers to himself in the third person and also explains the random "asked/says Count Bleck" at the end of some of his dialogues. He detached himself from the world that betrayed him so much he doesn't even speak his own thoughts."
Makes a ton of sense. Around the end of chapter 6, we finally start to see the cracks form as he realizes Timpani may still be alive. Only after his defeat and removal by Dimentio, is his true self able to return.
For a Mario game I’m surprised how wild the writers went with it. They used the Mario world as a backdrop to tell their own story, rather than telling a story within the Mario world. But I think that’s why I love it. Really such a bizarre game
This game has to be My favorite Paper Mario game. Maybe even my favorite Mario game thanks to the story. Love it so much that I will proudly and gladly play it again over and over to just fall in love with the story once more.
Count Bleck/Blumiere might as well be a cinematic villain, for his actually tragic backstory, and his hopeless-driven rage against the world (even knowing it is wrong, but too driven to turn back). Dimentio, while not as well written, is also amazing for his brilliant scheming, only to be destroyed by free will (or as Bowser says, the belief in "mopping the floor" with Dimentio).
This was the first paper Mario game I ever played and I remember how much I enjoyed this game without thinking much about the story back then at all, now I am not a child anymore and I just finished replaying this game. This time the story really resonated with me and the game still sticks in my head. The story is just so very emotional and you really feel for the characters especially tippi and count bleck. I really like how Mario and co are just tools in this game, plot devices used to deliver the dramatic tragedy with a beautiful ending of Lady timpani and count bleck
@breadandcircuses8127 Absolutely! Giving him his typical traits along with fleshing him out even more, i.e. being easily manipulatable, like with the Goombas buttering him up, made him by far the most interesting and thoroughly deep Luigi I've ever seen!
3:15 I love that when you're talking about the outlawing of the creation of more Pixls, you showed a clip of Burgermeister Meisterburger's anti-toy laws from Santa Claus is Comin' to Town.
the thing with stuff in the vid, while great; The Light Prognosticus actually isn't Prophetic, the Purity heart was the ancients making a way to *possibly* stop the end of all existence, which of course worked as seen in the game, the Dark Prognosticus was the only book that was Prophetic, which is quite an unnerving thought
9:42 This is why I love bleck. He has no justification for destroying all worlds, using a child to aid his plan and betraying his closest allies. He just does it. He knows what he's doing, even after Tippi returns he still fight until of course someone else takes control at which point he instantly swaps sides. I like this though because it portrays a realistic character. Ive met people only interested in personal gain and themselves way to many times and bleck is the perfect representation of it. He killer everyone in his tribe for literally no reason. For all he could've know Timpanni could've just been exploring the world waiting for Blumiere to find and fix her. But either way no justification. You can argue just barely it's fair to kill his father but everyone else? Perhaps he was abused as a child and all that but either way everyone and everything destroyed for no reason? Totally reluctant to change because like most narcissists, he can't accept being wrong.
@breadandcircuses8127 it's just a shame his redemption is such a letdown. So is demnentio. Like yeah I love the guy but he hits evil too on the nose. Especially with such a realistic character right next to him
Arguably, his evil appears to be because he let himself be controlled by the Dark Prognosticus. One person used that as an explanation for his third person talk; he's reciting it. It would also better explain his stark contrast between his villainous persona and the broken, shattered Blumiere buried within. Only after his defeat, is he able to snap out of it. But I love Dimentio for being the more raw, but incredibly clever form of evil, in contrast with Blumiere. By no means perfect or realistic, but I enjoyed both villains. The others in the group are excellent too (including Mr. L).
I see your point, but I think it’s kind of implied Bleck had gone insane by the time he started killing people. (Notice how he only starts speaking strangely and doing his “BLEH HEHE HEHE! BLECK!” after he confronts his father.) This does not excuse his actions but people can do very very horrible things while under mind breaking emotions, such as rage and grief. No matter the consequences that may follow. Also Mimi is in no way a child. Her true form is a giant spider creature with mechanical insides. She’s also a shapeshifter so the way we see her is probably just her preferred form.
I like to believe Dimentio isn't actually dead, but just chilling in some other undetectable dimension just so he can be the main villain again in a return to form Paper Mairo game.
What made this game work so well for me are the two cafes in Flipside and Flopside where you can get all sorts of lore dumps filling in gaps of the story leading up to the events of the game. The cafe owners, Garson and Carson, inexplicably have intel on things like the Pixl Uprising, the origins of Count Bleck's minions besides Mr. L, and details about individuals in the Tribe of Ancients and Tribe of Darkness. This didn't need to be there, but it added so much flavor to the game and makes the narrative feel more complete.
1:25 This was probably Dimentio, the game VERY heavily hints at him being the son of the Pixl creator, and having some kind of deeper connection to the Dark Prognosticus.
@@JasonDS64 Honestly, I liked SPM's gameplay more than Sticker Star's. Not to be a broken record, but I really just think turn-based combat is busted as hell without XP or something similar. I prefer Paper Mario being a traditional turn-based RPG, but I'm okay with them moving away from that in favor of being an "action-adventure." But if they want to ditch XP, they also need to ditch turn-based combat.
Super Paper Mario was a really great game I loved the story and the designs of the pixel partners. Nice to see as well that all four main Mario characters are playable in this one.
With Nintendo's new survey about both paper Mario and the Mario and Luigi series... it's possible we might be getting stories like this in the Mario series again.
So you just woke up this Friday and said.......imma make it emotional on here. Lol i love this story though. 3rd best paper mario but number 1 storyline
I haven't played the game in a couple years, and I wanted to finish my playthrough but I couldn't remember all the plot points so far. thanks for this video!
Now imagine if they didn't stray from the gameplay formula used in TTYD and OG Paper Mario. this would likely be the best paper mario game if that were the case, though I can also see it as second as people hold TTYD high.
I had seen a reworked version pitched in a video by "The Red Guy". He called it Paper Mario & The Dark Prognosticus. Basically if it was a TTYD successor, plus new elements like choosing between a hero (the 4) and a partner, as well as playable interchapter segments by different characters.
Wait, there was a 3,000 year old conflict in SPM too? Man, if I had a nickel for every game I knew that had a 3K year old conflict that happened before the events of the game started, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but, it's weird it's happened twice, right? To my knowledge at least. Pokémon X/Y Super Paper Mario
A stupid survey where over 90% of players said they didn't care for the story. Probably a bunch of normies who either never played the game, but did the poll for the kicks, or got it merely because it was a Super Mario game on the Wii (after all, both Galaxy and NSMB Wii didn't come out yet). They let others' opinions control their art.
I still think its funny Mario and Luigi go to hell and Peach goes to heaven, i can see Mario going to hell due to the murders, but Luigi isna sweetheart
I really should give this one another shot. After playing Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door, I had hope for this one but couldn't get behind how much they changed as well as the looks of the world and its inhabitants. Maybe I'll come back to it and give it a fair go again.
Too SPM’s credit while it’s gameplay was changed it at least had most of what fans enjoyed about the first two which is more than can be said how it’s 3DS follow up was handled by the new team and Tanabe.
I’ve never played through super paper Mario before because whenever I do, I get the joke game over at the start because saying ‘Nah’, don’t wanna is never not hilarious. Can’t be bothered sitting through the opening monologue and then forget about the joke game over. This is happened on 3 separate occasions over the course of 15 years.
But I was wondering: why did Dimensio lose if he had Luigi on his side? It was written in the Light Prognosticus, but since it was not prophetic, having Louis on your side would have been the only way to make it come true
