  • The Con Dao islands are a secluded paradise off the southern coast of Vietnam. This video will give you an impression on Con Son, the only inhabited island.
From Soc Trang city, there's a Superdong shuttle bus to Tran De port. Here you get on the Superdong II ferry to Con Son Island, where it arrives at the beautifully situated Ben Dam port.
This is more a trip for history and nature lovers. This island used to be hell on earth for Việt Cộng and other political prisoners.
There is a museum on the island and you will find many more remains like former prisons with the infamous Tiger cages used by the French and American occupiers to torture and kill prisoners back in the days.
Many locals visit Con Son to pay their respects to revolutionaries such as Vo Thi Sau, the first women on the island to have been executed by the French.
Aside from this dark and painful past of Con Son, the island also has plenty of unspoilt beaches! Its very clean, people are friendly and the surroundings are very beautiful. With quiet, well-built roads its perfect to rent a motorbike and explore!

The Con Dao prison was operated from 1864 to 1954 under the French. The South Vietnamese government ran the Con Dao prison after the French left in 1954. The prison was used by the South Vietnamese military regime until 1975. Americans never controlled that prison. The majority of the Brutality there came from the South Vietnamese Military regime against its enemies.

Check out the story about Tom Harkin and how he discovered the Tiger Cages and published photo's in 1970. He revisited the place 25 years later.
