- The Sega Mega Drive and Sega Genesis had some amazing games, hardware, and peripherals. I’m on a journey to build a great collection, one that as a child growing up with the Sega Mega Drive, I would have loved to have had. In this month's Collectors Edition I add a number of games to the collection, some interesting paraphernalia, I get closer to finishing one of the Phantasy Star games, add a Holy Grail, and a new piece of hardware.

Wow! That’s so much in this episode, thanks for the trip down memory lane with “Dick Tracy”. And CONGRATS for finally getting your own Pal Nomad with 2 boxes! Your bespoke EU box is totally “next level”! It would definitely surpass the original box and I haven’t come across any unboxing video of the EU Nomad that looks as pleasing as yours. Brilliant! 👍
I know the episode was probably too long😅 I could have probably split the Nomad video out. But I wanted to get it all done before I went to Gamescom.
Your video duration is fine, but a separate video on Nomad-related content will be awesome too. 👍
A good friend owns a retro used game and toy store, focused on 80s and 90s items. He gets less and less customers, simply because collectors already have their collections completed. Those who experienced the games (and toys) back in the day are the only people who feel nostalgia about them. Collectors and enthusiasts under 35 are now too young to be fond of 8 and even 16-bit gaming. And I get it, I'm also not fond of older eras, for example I don't collect stuff like the Colecovision since I have no memories of it. So I guess that prices will go down from now on, while rarity can only increase with time.
I think you will also see an increase in rarer games on the market as those that bought to sell try to get a good price before the prices see a big downturn.
Wow, that Nomad box! 🤩👌 Great work! If that would be available on Etsy ... anyways, great video, awesome collection. Cheers!
Thanks, I properly nerd out making these boxes 😂
Hi Mike. Have you ever thought about producing more of these boxes and selling them?!
There's some decent sellers on etsy that do those repro boxes.
I did it for my EA Classic games. Unfortunately not enough people bought them, So I made a loss😭
@@RetroGamerBoy Ah, sorry to hear that.
Nice Nomad box....I don't know who told you we stack console boxes like that but we did not. I worked for Micro Play from 1995-1998. Further, I have been a gamer since 1986 with the Nes and Master System. We stacked the boxes so you see the front picture of the console. That's part of the sales pitch as most console boxes had all kinds of print across the front. We even did it when spacing wasn't optimal and it forced us to go get more from stock.
For reference- We had an actual pyramid of Playstation and Saturn consoles stacked from the floor all the way up to my chest. That's how crazy we stacked them and customers could grab one from the top, bring it over to the register, and buy it. Yes, we had morons attempt to grab from the bottom which eventually caused us to take it all down. That all happened on 9/9/95 or the launch of the Playstation.
Oh very cool.
Mike, you have an amazing intro! It always pleases me. Great catch
It was a decent haul this month.
Bro, you really showed off on this video, lol. Dang, living my dream! But congrats man, glad someone is doing it and we can at last see all this stuff! Keep going! Long live the RGB!
🤘😝🤘
That's quite the haul! Also, awesome work on the PAL Nomad box.
When it comes to the prices softening for Genesis/Megadrive games, all I can really say is it's about damn time! Prices for all retro gaming (hardware and software) have been artificially inflated for years now. I definitely sympathize with anyone who bought in while prices were high and needs to sell, but dropping prices will allow a lot more people to enjoy this hobby with original hardware and software rather than having to turn to emulation.
It will definitely be interesting to see if prices continue to fall. I suspect some sellers will never drop their prices even if that means they can't shift their stock.
@@RetroGamerBoy Yeah I could see that being the case, especially for items that are rare. Hopefully prices continue to fall, but I'm not overly optimistic. While I believe prices for retro games were dramatically overinflated in recent years, the reality is that companies aren't making more of these systems/games (except the new releases of course), and more people are getting interested in them.
At some point I think most people will just turn to emulation or FPGA though. Like there's no way I'd buy a Saturn at this point due to the cost of the system and games, I'd just get a MiSTer instead.
Fun story, I bought global gladiators with my birthday money from game when I was ten completed it, took it back next day and bought cyborg justice which I still have ❤
😅 brilliant
Wow dude your skills making that nomad box is amazing.
Some great pick ups dude 👊🏻
I found the Sega cards in my parents attic a few years ago so set out to get the rest to complete the full set early this year.
How do you make such big cardboard art though, on 🖨️?
That's awesome, I think I only need 17 to complete it.
Been a subscriber to this channel for about 2 years. I love the Mega Drive and still have a MK1 from childhood. I dont play it anymore but I just love watching the passion and interest you show in this amazing console. I absolutely love the reproduction style boxes you do, especially when you do the PAL style stuff. I really love this channel, I love learning about this stuff and just seeing your passion and knowledge on this stuff. You're creating not just a collection but a historical time chamber of Megadrive. That video about the Sega Chair and the box you made was amazing, I love this content. Keep up the great work ❤
That's amazing to hear thanks.
The official name of the handheld is Genesis Nomad, the greatly reduced Genesis logo has people just calling it Nomad. The text at the front of the box in the bottom left corner refers to it as such, as does the manual.
Yup I know, but people abbreviate it. Just like the Genesis or Mega Drive 32X, people just call this the 32X.
15:00 awesome thats all I need
Glad I could provide😅
Bumper episode today, you are spoiling us Mike! It's a hell of a haul that you've managed to get added to the collection, some properly solid games, the Panini cards and that modded Nomad sounds luverly! I had a feeling the box in the thumbnail might very well have been your handiwork and after that closer look at the other one you had, I really don't blame you for doing your thing at all.
It's proper nerdy, but it's a bit of fun and it keeps me out of Sega Heads street gang.
Great puckups) Thank you for new and interesting video!
Thank you for watching
Awesome this portable cobsole. Cutthoard island good play)
It's so cool to play my original games on the go.
Whoa now, that was awesome! Cheers and rock on!
Thanks 🤘😝🤘
Wow love your Sega Nomad mike and I’ve really enjoyed watching you slowing complete your Mega Drive / genesis collection as I too am trying complete my MD Pal collection too 👍🏻 video Mike
It's a lot of fun building out the collection.
The Pal custom Nomad box is amazing! As always you are the best!
Thanks it's a nice edition to the collection. Hopefully I can get an original box in the future.
Congrats for your retro MD buys Mike! . It looks super great your custom box. I'm with you, Sega Nomad is awesome to play Mega Drive titles, I love it (very recomended the unlock region, USB cable and LCD replacement mods).
The battery and screen mod are just amazing
Those game cards are brilliant, never heard of them!
Same here. It's really cool opening a game box and finding the card inside.
Well done mate good haul and great looking nomad box setup 💪
It would be cool to get an original box. But getting one in the UK is going to be hard.
Those Genesis…ahem, Mega Drive games all look mint dude! 👌🏻Those cards are slick. Very cool compliment to the games. Nice job with your Nomad box design!
I'd love to get an original box for it. But as it was not released in the UK that's going to be hard.
That box! Some serious skills
Thanks dude
As always, this was a great video, and the quality of the audio, as well as the video, was superb. Based on the case work that you’d done, are you a Graphic Designer? Also, you brought back memories with Paperboy. I kept my games in pristine condition, and made the mistake of lending it to a friend when I was in elementary school. I got it back with the case, the artwork sleeve, and the manual, chewed up by a dog. It was the most frustrating lesson, because I realized that not everyone takes care of the their things the way I do. I never took anything for granted because I remember losing everything coming to the US, and then having to start over, so anytime something was given to me, I used it, but took great care of it.
When someone lent me something and it looked bad when they handed to me, I’d clean it up as best as I could, so if it was a PS2 game and the disc looked messy or it had stains on it, I’d use my buffer, which was for rental games, since those always looked bad, and clean the discs, as well as the box, if it was in rough condition. I stopped lending people games because mine were in pristine condition, luckily, when the last few Saturn games came out, I wound up getting Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Burning Rangers. They’re both now graded, and both came back with a 9.9 grade for Burning Rangers, and a 9.6 for Panzer Dragoon Saga.
I'm a games developer. I've picked up a few skills along the way. 😅
Love that map; I always adore video game maps.
The cards are fantastic! That's what we do with the Limited Run Games cards we used to get, keep them in the plastic sleeves and insert them into the games they're for.
Game prices are ridiculous; I still place a lot of blame on resellers who have driven up prices to ALL games, no matter their rarity or scarcity or not; as the idea made the rounds that "old game equals money" it made it harder to push those mid and low tier games.
Yay! You've joined the Nomad Club with your Toms!! Let's all go for a Nomad play date! Your box work looks fantastic BTW.
Thanks Tom, I could not let Sega Head out Genesis me😅
I wish they'd released the Nomad officially over here in Europe, back then...
Well, I ended up doing like you, getting a modded "region free" NTSC Nomad. I still love it to this day, it's like an early take on the concept of the Switch! XD
Exactly! It's so amazing to play my games on the go. I know there are a ton of emulsion devices out there, but I have saved progress on may of these carts, and I love playing the original cart.
@@RetroGamerBoy Emulation never feels 100% right...
Love the content RGB, I’m just starting off on my Mega Drive collecting journey. Over the next 12 months, will be hopefully adding a lot to my collection. You mentioned a Private Seller that is struggling to shift his collection. I would be interested in an introduction if he is still looking for sellers (if they are amenable to this of course).
He sold the remainder of what he had to a store. I think it was called forgotten worlds.
I have a quadruple paralysis
What is that?
Hey Mike! So funny as I thought you had purchased my NBA jam for sale for a moment. Was weird seeing my own item in your video !
I have a very minty copy also , and then realized its still listed! DOH! my bad!🤣 GREAT CONTENT and brand kits going!!! Very impressed
😅 that would have been cool if it was the case.
Great video again. I think we are seeing the pricing bubble set to burst. Think who the main collectors really are - people our age who played on the original hardware who have that nostalgia. While a 20 or 30-year-old may like retro games, they can't have the memories attached to playing these after getting them for Christmas etc, and when they really were cutting edge. They won't appreciate seeing, for example, a bit of sprite rotation or wireframe and understand how out of the world it was at the time. I'll never forget putting Ranger X in my Megadrive and seeing those amazing level intros. It's hard to get someone whose first console was a PS3 to pay several hundred pounds for a game they can download any number of ways, even for free, which doesn't tax the hardware in any way, or resonate with them. I still bloody love the MD - keep up the good work.
You are totally right. I think we are also seeing the end of being able to collect for nostalgia. With most games needing online backends and servers, many of the games my son plays will never be accessible again unless someone can back engineer them or Dev teams implement peer to peer as they shut down a games server.
Nice one. I’m going to check out cut throat island 🏝 thanks 😊 Mike
I was very surprised by it, I was expecting terrible but it's ok and there are some really nice bits as well.
God, I hope there's a down turn. Great video as always.
I think there is, like I said, quite a few collectors are selling up now.
Hi Mike, I’ve been waiting to see your nomad review and finally the custom box, it looks amazing. As for your additions Dick Tracy is in my all time top 10 games and I never knew about the two player mistake, I’ll be checking mine later. As for mega man I’m never going to get that unless I get lucky which you like me know is very possible in the true mega drive community but until that day I’ll keep playing it on my mega drive mini 😀. As for the cards wow something else I’ve now learnt and as for the downturn yes I’ve noticed a slight change in some game prices to both md and sms games so those bargains are out there. As always was great to meet up with segahead and yourself again at the London gaming market and I’m glad I could help with the Winter Olympics (thanks again for the custom classics box I love it). Catch up soon and looking forward to the next live at the arcade (yay astebros), take care and keep that collection going you nearly there, cheers Jonathan
I'm slowly moving forward with it. But I'm in no rush to finish it.
€1 is equals 5 Brazilian reais, so if I want a €400 game I have to spend R$2,000 on it. What is just unreal! That's why I gave up collecting original games for now. There are some guys, like Retro X Electronics, that makes very good CIB reproductions for €30, and it feels like unseal a new game just like it was back in the day. It's not the same, but it'll have to do for now. Great video by the way!
Repros are brilliant and a great way to build a physical collection.
I was under the impression you already had Mega Man. I like the Nomad box, it looks cool. Cutthroat Island would almost be great if the game was a little more forgiving.
Nope, it's been a challenge to find it complete and in good condition. If you are going to spend a lot, the least you can expect is that it's in great condition.
@@RetroGamerBoy I agree.
Mike I need a video just on the nomad looks so awesome
It's coming good sir.
I read your Title and saw the title card. And I’m racking my head thinking I’m pretty sure the new head was a North American exclusive. I was convinced that it came from Brazil. Lol. And yes, I know Brazil isn’t part of Europe
Yup for some bizarre reason it was an exclusive release only in North America.
A Sega Nomad is the absolute holy grail for me. I'd bloody love one of those in the future... fully modded Game Gears are incredible, but the Nomad must be next level!! That box you've created is a work of art, well done... just beautiful! However, all that teasing and unboxing of the Nomad and no demo, no gameplay, no showing it off in all its glory!? 😱😱 Tell me you're planning a huge bumper video just on the Nomad, with lots of gameplay and chat about it? 😂
Great vid as always 👌🏻
I am. This video was already massive and I needed it edited before I left for gamescom.
@@RetroGamerBoy Yessssssss!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Were you tempted to photoshop out the "genesis" logo on the nomad photo for your box?
Well there was a point where I was considering putting a Mega Drive silk screen logo on the console.
@@RetroGamerBoy Ah wow, are they permanant? I've always been worried about accidently scratching them off.
@@Larry they can be. I'm working on a project now that uses them. Of course with enough pressure I'm sure you can scratch them off.
Haha makes a box for a European nomad and leaves genesis on it! Bahaha. Fail
Awesome pickups, thank you for sharing the story with Mega Man Wily Wars as well. I haven't seen this kind of drop in price in my country yet, but it's bound to happen at some point, considering the current economic climate.
Yup I agree, people just cannot afford these price's.
Sega should hire you for Genesis mini 3/Neptune mini art !
😂 they should hire me to make their games.
@@RetroGamerBoy indeed like new Yuko shmup
Great Collection !
Thanks, it's slowly growing.
That nomad upgrade sounds incredible.
It is amazing, it makes it feel comparable to more modern devices.
Great pick ups Mike, wily wars was going for £350 on eBay back in 2016-17
Yup, I remember. I also remember thinking that was way too much 😂
Nomad outsold Jaguar, Amiga CD32, FM Towns Marty, Virtual Boy, Apple Pippen, Ouya COMBINED. And it was only sold in NA. They should have sold it everywhere like cdx/multimega.
Agreed, I think it would have done well in Europe and Brazil, although it may have been cost prohibited in Brazil.
@@RetroGamerBoy ahhh
Great additions man 👍👍
Regarding the game prices, I have noticed lately that they seem to have dropped slightly and that it seems that some collectors are selling their collections. Maybe I am wrong but lately I have found very good deals on games like golden axe the duel, sparkster, Animaniacs and a couple more 😊
Yup, definitely seeing better prices on mid level common titles.
Cyborg justice is fun as crap. Taking parts off other cyborgs to replace your own, etc. One of the smallest 2 player games too
It's such an interesting game. I wonder what a modern day sequel on the MD/Genesis would be like.
Glad you got megaman mike. Those cards you got remind me of megadrive cards i used to get from packs of candy cigarettes in the 90s (i wanna say 93?) I remember them having a screen shot of a game and cheats on the reverse
They could be the same thing. Or at least similar.
Great games pal
Thanks 👍
It’s fun to see Dick Tracy and Paperboy - they were both part of my childhood collection (I remember buying Paperboy 2 quite a bit later and being excited to finally be able to shoot papers in the opposite direction). I just had a look at my copy of Dick Tracy and it doesn’t look like there was ever any attempt to cover up the 1-2 Players error on mine.
😅 yup, it's an error that not many people know about and so don't really notice.
Cost of living has a huge impact on things like this. People have less money to spend on things like this that are not 'required' for life. And a lot of people who are struggling for money will turn to their collections to generate extra income. I have had a few arcade items for sale that a year ago would sell within a week, but have now had zero offers on.
Sucks having kids right!
Very true. Your priorities are tested when your power bill triples. I've sold off parts of my collection to fund my Mega Drive collection.
Great vid Mike, less than 70 to go.
Slowly getting there.
I started collecting for the genesis again, and shit's sooo expensive. Lol. Im cool with just Carts and no boxes. But sheeesh!
Carts are a great way to go. And can look great on a custom or tape cassette shelf.
I recently watched Cut throat island coz of the game...yes the movie was bad and it ruined Geena Davis's marriage. Some nice pick ups. Solid. AsteBros is the one, love playing this game too! As a seller at the gaming market, people were picky and it was tough, the sweet spot I found was £100-£200 where I could sell a game, anything over £200 is a hard sell I found. Then again I was selling Nintendo stuff but even then it was difficult. Regardless I did well on my first time. This November I'm gonna do better. Be good to see you again! Very nice Nomad box very good.
I hope I can make it. I have a lot of travelling this year.
Prices are going down because not everyone wants 1000s of cartridges around the house. I love retro games, but I have an Ambernic for those and bought a bunch of collections, remakes and retro inspired games for switch digitally and I’m good. Love watching other people’s collections, but it’s not for me.
I did recently discover GB studio. That might get me to hunt down an original Gameboy and an ever drive cartridge
That would be very cool.
Did you get Limited run's Version of Megaman the Wily Wars too?
And I assume that this copy that you have is the original game released in 1994?
I missed out on the Retro-Bit version. Although there are loads of them on eBay. Yes this is the original.🤘😝🤘
That NOMAD is nice n everything but, honestly, if i would want to travel i prefer to carry a Switch Lite or a 3DS, something with less weight and, many games but, for putting on a shelve i guess that can do the job
I have my Nomad here at Gamescom, and later this year I will take it to the Tokyo games show.
cool stuff..the nomad pal box, mm: the wily wars ( i own the improved retro-bit reissue) and that dick tracy variant specially
I would like to get my hands on the Retro-Bit version.
I saw your first videos and it was just video trailers, commertials and intros! And I was wondering when did start making videos about Megadrive contents and why you stopped making these videos?!
The commercials and trailers are from the games that I developed and worked on. I have them there so that I can show people what I've worked on. I officially started proper UA-cam in June 2018 and the channel focused on general retro. Then I think it was towards the end of 2019 where I started to focus on the Mega Drive.
Congratulations on owning that PAL European SEGA Nomad! That is a beautiful box! It's region modded to support all games but what is the refresh rate frequency? To be a true European PAL model, it has to output at 50Hz, or at least give you the choice like a toggle switch.
Those games you showed were interesting. I still think you paid an arm and a leg for Megaman The Wily Wars, 400 quid here in Australia is easily $1000 dollars AU and that is ''price gouging'' my friend, no video game should ever be worth that much and if it is, it has to be better than having sex on a rollarcoaster eating junk food and getting drunk at the same time. For you, you can obviously afford such high prices based on your finances but the average Joe cannot afford that. I've said this before, I will not pay more than $200 Australian dollars for a video game and since most sellers price gouge these days and blame it on any excuse they can think of (Covid-19, the war in Ukraine, Inflation, climate change etc) I tend to stick to cheap affordable reproduction carts.
Enjoyed the video mate and look forward to more. Well done!
I've not really played around with PAL games yet, I'm playing Astebros on it exclusively at the moment. I'm sure I'll get round to testing the 50hz mode soon. £400 is a stupid amount. But I've wanted Mega Man for the longest time and considering it sells for double the price I had to jump on it. I also save each month for my games. There is always a perception that I can just spend that money at the drop of a dime, but I actually save up for everything I buy. Or I sell parts of my collection to fund other purchases. My wife would kill me if I just spent that cash😂
@@RetroGamerBoy You're awesome and whatever works for you is all that matters. Thanks for the reply and love your content.
Sega should have Nomad 5 inch screen and build in bank power instead dumb burning out 8 batteries look at the cost of battery those days were expensive and game gear has portable power bank those day's lucky I brought them could last me about 3-4hrs which is enough for me
I think the bill of manufacturing would make the console too expensive if they did that back in the day. Integrated batteries are only now more common place as the tech has become cheaper and more reliable. But if they could have done it then it would have been amazing.
A lot of resellers got into the game in the last few years... and overpaid.. now they want to try and get reselling prices of more than they paid and the market has started going back down... I don't feel bad for them.
You have to take the rough with the smooth if you get into reselling. You can complain when the price comes down if you drive people away from the hobby with overpricing.
@@RetroGamerBoy Right. It just seems there's been a lot more people recently getting into reselling based purely on trying to over price items... where as years ago a lot of resellers were also collectors and just sold to get more money to collect more games... though back then prices were also a lot more reasonable.
Love those Panini cards - What card sleeves do you use for them?
I'm not sure of the make but I just searched for "Hard plastic card sleeve" and there were tons I could buy.
@@RetroGamerBoy ah ok thanks, think it’s so cool with the brief description and how many players the game is.
Other comment:
Didn't a company plan on making a new version of the sega nomad? Retro-bit or someone else?
Or did I imagine this?
I'm not sure about that, but I would love it if they did.
I've got a modded Nomad too, and most PAL cartridges work on it, but I could not get The Story of Thor to work (I get an unstable screen), have you tried it?
Not yet. I'll try that when I get back from Gamescom.
Is there slowdown in mega man 3 in ur wiley wars edition ?
No. I captured that footage years ago though, so it's probably captured at 25fps.
Retro gaming became a huge money maker and stores started popping up all over. Some run by people even up to their 70s who quit baseball cards and would use a retro database to gouge gamers. It's now also crashing because of people just have given up trying to be like Retro Tubers from last decade, who are partly to blame. (No offense.)
Non taken. I use my platform to promote new indie Devs making games for older consoles than I do talking about the buying and selling of them.
Hi Mike, I have a mega cd 1 with the UK version of final fight. I’ve just found out that the Japanese copy is more like the arcade. Would you know if the Japanese copy works on the mega cd ?
Thanks Jon
Unfortunately it won't work. The Mega CD is region locked. You would need to mod your console or get a repro version of the game.
Hey Mike. How would you rate the Noman D-Pad compared to other sega D-pads?
I hear some mixed things about it and wanna hear your perspective.
I had a nomad. Bought it in u.s. at tail end of its life . D pad worked perfectly fine. Seem to recall button layout was hard to reach abit. But was a novelty imo. Loved megadrive. But just didn't feel right as a handheld. I took it back within 30 days for my money back. They were very cheap at the time often in bargain basement bins. Think I paid $60 for it new. I can see why it failed. Not worth the money then and certainly not worth what they go for now. O and some games didn't work with nomad too. Battery life was awful too and whilst 2 player with 2nd pad was great idea just didn't work in reality with such a tiny screen with your friend holding it. And alot of the games were too small to really play properly on such a small screen. It worked fine connected to your TV though but that defeated the purpose.
The Dpad is ok. I've mostly played RPGs on it though. I've not tried something like SF2 or MK1. Those games will put the console through it's paces. I would say that the mods I have turn it from an ok handheld into a great handheld. The screen brightness and resolution makes detailed games playable, and. The built in battery with 8hrs of play is better that having the massive battery pack that lasts 30mims.
Sega Switch
Yes!
@@RetroGamerBoy indeed love your content. But how can you print thick cardboard 🖨️?
It says "Holly Grail." I'm pretty sure you meant Holy. 😅
I'm not sure what you mean, it's spelt properly....
@@RetroGamerBoy 😂
Can i buy one please?
I've only made one.
Was the movie that bad?
Yup
Cutthroat Island was a forgettable movie back in the day, and the licensed game appears to be a reskinned Aladdin 🤔
It's a new game, it's not using the Aladdin engine. The IPs just start in similar settings.
Cool Nomad review and Mega drive pick-ups :) Yea, Cutthroat Island the movie was bad, but surprisingly the game was great, also I like Dick Tracy for both Genesis and NESPaperoby is an aracde classic, and I had Winter Olympics for Genesis once, the gameplay was good but also I appreciated the soundtrack 👍
It was a good pickup month 👍
