one thing he didn't mention was that the inbound spoke always goes under the outbound spoke AKA the down spoke goes under the up spoke! if you look closely he laces the wheel exactly like I explained

is this right? i just did a set using this method and the way you describe it, its would be 3x all under crosses. Down spoke over up makes it under under over counting from the inward Jbend outward. I always thought you would want spoke contact for a stiffer wheel.

Not always! Maybe for strength, but Schwinn didn’t cross under even on prewar wheels.

The easiest way to lace a wheel is to pay someone else to do it! ;) It took me SOOOOOOOOOO damn long to finally do my first successful 3x and 4x wheels properly.
Also.... I have the same exact '87 GT performer, just in all chrome. Found it (by painfully landing on it) while playing on a ropeswing in the river that runs through my neighborhood half buried in the sand in like 2007 and brought her back to life! I asked the guy who technically owned the house where the rope swing was if I could take it and he basically said "Wow, now you kids take garbage away for free, and even underwater?! It's all yours, buddy!"

The first and six trick is a really super handy thing to know as well as a wheel builder because if you ever break a spoke while riding or mess up while lacing and have to remove/replace a spoke you will know exactly where it goes and how it should be positioned in the wheel no matter where at on the hub just by counting out

This is the most convoluted way to lace up a traditional 3 cross spoke pattern wheel. Its much easier to lace both sides 'pulling' spokes (inside) starting at the valve hole to avoid his crossed spokes over the valve stem. Then lace all outside spokes so you don't have to fish spokes between crossed spokes on the opposite side of the hub. Also having a proper spoke length calculator to confirm spoke lengths before starting is critical.

Going to try to lace up some old Suzue high flange hubs to some Sun Envy rims 3X. Just bought the spokes, hope I don't botch it, knowing myself I'll screw something up the first try.😂 Hope I even ordered the right spoke length after measuring the hubs, but I already have everything, so I guess I'll find out. 😁 This video will be helpful either way and I'm sure I'll be referencing back to it several times. Thanks Alfredo and Phu! 👍

  • @DaleC.
    @DaleC. 2 роки тому +1

Just did this and it worked pretty well. The added bonus is that the even X allows you to clock the hub and align the valve hole and the hub branding predictably for the extra cool points. Now to find the vid on how to true up the wheels.

Great video! Of all the ones I’ve watched on how to do this, this is by far the easiest I’ve seen! Two questions though.
    1. When crossing, how are you crossing? Does that 6th spoke go over or under the other?
    2. Also, when doing the drive side, is the spokes shorter? I’ve seen in some videos they say you need shorter spokes for the drive side because the flange is bigger? I’m totally new to building wheels but I really want to try it!

Phus way is actually really good because it's adding that even tension all around so when you get to the other side it's setting you up for even tension on both sides and centers the hub with the spokes and the pattern is good too I've laced 6 wheels before I messed up only one wheel before but this was using the slower method of dropping the spoke straight down skipping one slot adding one skipping one and repeating the process for the opposite side

if you dont know how to lace learn it the normal way. guessing spoke holes is just about the worst thing you can do if you have never done it. driver side and non driver side hub holes are offset by half the distance between holes, so that you must use the exact opposite hole that is off by half the distance to get the desired result. eyeballing it is for veterans only. park tool guys have a really good video on lacing a 3 cross the traditional way and its very easy to understand also.

Would this work for rear hubs that need diff size spokes lengths?

Yes! You just need to cross one side more than the other. 3 cross one 4 cross the other

I'd love a how-to on truing a wheel without removing it from a bike, and not having a stand for maintenance. I have an old rear wheel that needs a bit of TLC, and I'd like to do it myself

We’ve actually done a few versions of truing. Check the “Tech Thursday” playlist

I've tried a few times before, first time it had coaster brakes and I couldn't get the spokes out because I didn't realize how the driver came off, second time I got half way through and realized I messed up the count and couldn't figure out you have to bend the spokes
