No need to replace the whole shift mechanism! Just bend the tired little microswitch spring tab a bit. The microswitch obviously still works when you push on it manually, it just isn't being depressed enough by the shift selector.
Did changing the shifter fix the problem or did you have to change out a sensor as well?

What happens if I remove the key without putting it in park and now it won’t turn on what do I have to do to fix it?
It won't let you get the key out if it is not in parking unless you already forced it.
