    Love these videos from ItsMyNaturalColour. Man after my own heart - tinkering about with old Macs to get the best out of them, and geeking out over old home entertainment systems. Carry on, good sir.

    My first Mac model was the Macintosh LC, and my first system version was its included System 7.0.1. Not as fancy as Tiger by any measure, but I appreciate the feeling of seeing that old system again. I run 7.0.1 on vMac now, and the emulated Mac II is pretty much identical to that Mac LC I once used. Funnily enough, I also had a Power Mac G3 BW when I finished high school and started college, and it was on there that I first got to upgrade to Mac OS X and finally enjoy multitasking and protected memory. I was so jazzed about it that I took that puppy to one of my community college classes to demo it xD

    Tiger was my first OS on a 2006 Intel iMac, when it was current. My favourite will always be Snow Leopard - and that is what I used at University for all my music production work. Got Tiger running on a 12" Alu PowerBook G4 just the other day after installing an mSATA SSD in it with an adapter. Bizarrely, it even installed from a USB stick. It absolutely screams along and is very, very responsive.
    Good times.

    No matter what anyone says in some G3's as long as formatted right, can boot off a USB Flash drive with a OS install image (.DMG) file on it and install the OS on the HD. Hold down option at start up and it will show the drive. Worked on a iMac 600MHz G3 with a Tiger .DMG image on the flash drive. Was a 16GB Brand new flash drive. So the long awaited question is yes some PPC macs can boot off USB and was Around the same install time as the CD drive even with USB 1.1. Have not tried it on my own G3 B&W yet though only iMac.

    Nice Video! I had very similar power problems with my G3's. They just wouldn't turn on at all but eventually work again after unplugging them or just letting them sit for some hours/days. It turns out that the PMU seems to be the reason for this behavior. I found out that I can usually get it back to work by simply performing a PMU reset according to Apples instructions. I've had this issue with three different B/W's.

    Great video Tom! Glad to see you finally were able to get Tiger installed onto the G3. It's funny that Tiger was your first Mac OS because when I was in middle school, I used Tiger on white PPC G5 iMacs for a computer graphics class. It was my first time using Mac OS X. There was little to no security implemented onto the machines so I had free reins to configure things how I wanted them haha Can't wait to see the part upgrades and everything in the future parts!

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 7 років тому

      We had a bunch of PowerMac G4's at college in the media and design labs. Everyone was confused as hell with the lack of an application frame in Photoshop having being used to their pirated Windows copies at home lol. For that reason alone many people hated the Macs, which is hilarious given it wasn't even a Mac thing, it was Adobe who made that decision lol.

    • @Revinriley
      @Revinriley 7 років тому

      I know the feeling, when I initially started in that class, I was confused as hell but really enjoyed learning. It is hard to understand that the applications don't always have to have a window open in order to "open" because a lot of times I will go to a machine and all these apps are open but no windows are shown. Annoying, but people primarily only know windows and if a window isn't open, the application isn't open.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 7 років тому

      Revinriley Indeed. Mac OS makes the distinction between close and quit. Interestingly so does most of the Office suite along with Adobe's stuff (and where did they first appear? The Mac!).

    I own the slowest Powermac G3 B&W, the base model with a 300MHz CPU that has half the cache of the 350/400/450MHz models. At least it was cheap, I paid shipping for it (RAM, power supply, HDD and some screws were missing). It has 384MB of RAM, an ATI Rage128 16MB GPU, a noisy 27GB Quantum HDD and a noisy Toshiba CD drive (Was inside the machine when I got it in 2011. Don't know if it is the factory drive). Did I mention that something inside makes weird high pitch sounds? Booting from CD is a pain in the butt, but it works eventually and the power button gets stuck. Otherwise it runs fine.

      A good idea and something I'd love to do for a different type of project, but believe it or not these videos are massively cut down. Optical drives have always been an absolute shambles in terms of reliability. They're almost always the first part to die on any machine and this is one reason Apple got rid of the things when they did. SATA era stuff isn't quite so bad, but they're still far less reliable than damn near any other component in your machine.

    • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  7 років тому

      I'm so glad that all the optical drive fuss is over. As I said in the video, once I find a good one (normally a Pioneer) I'm set to go with the machine, but finding one from the stash is always a pain.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 7 років тому

      ItsMyNaturalColour I have a few old ones kicking about somewhere but I have no idea if they still work. I'll check them out some day... maybe. I'll think of you if I ever get around to it and they do actually work. A few of them were Sony and Plextor ones which were always pretty reliable, as reliable as optical can be that is. I currently have Lite-On (the new name of Plextor) Blu-ray drive that I rip all my erm... Blu-rays with for the media server. That reminds me, I really need a bigger NAS. I've used a full 4TB drive up for my iTunes library! Don't worry, I have backups!
