    I'm a ten year
    Kia master Elite Technician and all I'm stopping by at that. O intake piping gets unbolted from down. botten. I'll give you one tip, the waistgate valve is adjustable, but you need a kds to get it borderline so it won't trip safe home mode. I've got some Kia easily push 20+ horse power by just adjusting that rod. It was a recall also.

    • @aikidokamks
      @aikidokamks 9 місяців тому

      Yeah. I accidentally adjusted mine high and was boosting 3 or so more than stock and so my piggyback was adding on top of that. Not good on the stock turbo so got it back in range. Upgrading the turbo this year.

    ECU tune from BTRcc or LAP3 Uncle Tune will do so much more, for only a few bucks more.
    Add a water/meth kit for even more power. With a full set of bolt-ons, HKS MK45XL Plugs, 93 Octane Gas, Turbo-Back Exhaust, Intercooler, Meth Injection, Under-drive pulleys, and a proper ECU tune, 270-290 WHP (330-50 Crank HP) is normal. There are some that have the slips to prove 300WHP. A Wastegate upgrade kit from LAP3USA can net you over 400HP (Expensive though) $3000+

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  6 років тому +1

      I've heard a lot of good things about the BTR, as far as I know it's as popular as the LAP3.. there are a number of other tuning options available: www.optimaforums.com/forum/130-optima-performance/60386-kia-optima-performance-tunes.html .. this post is old and there's a good chance there are even more options out there now. I personally went with the LAP3 because of it's simplicity to put in and take out for warranty purposes, takes 3 minutes and is so easy my wife can do it lol. I would love to look around for more ways to squeeze some more numbers out of this car, i.e., a meth kit or upgraded turbo setup, but I'm afraid if I push it much more it's going to start comprimising internals. I just blew my first engine and got another one for free off warranty but I'd rather make this one last a little longer, at least until after I get through school and start work lol.

      Lol you’re not wrong!! I had a lot of extra money the first couple years I bought this car, & being 23 y/o, car parts sounded like the best way to spend it.
      I spend my money mostly on my business & home improvement now, BUT I do need some new springs & struts, so I’ll get something aftermarket for that.
      And I appreciate the compliment!

    alright thanks for the info. I'm definitely ordering the chip, HKS spark plugs, oil catch can, and K&N intake. I the k5 bov plate and throttle body spacer installed as of yesterday. I noticed much more throttle response and an added 3 mpg just from the spacer.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  9 років тому

      +Michael McCray how does that k5 bov plate work for you? I saw that but decided to go with the HKS BOV. I just got my throttle body spacer put in last week.. some people reported a better/smoother throttle response, especially at low RPM, but I think the gains are minimal. I think the best advantage of the spacer are the ports, where you can put sensors in or inject, something that I may delve into at a later date. Let me know how those other parts work for you, or if you have any questions on install, and I will help the best I can.

    • @michaelblake84
      @michaelblake84 9 років тому

      I personally like to plate and you can't beat it for the price. Its just loud enough but its not obnoxious by any means. Very simple install obviously. I like the ability to plug into those ports in the spacer. I want to add a boost gauge. And I do notice a difference in throttle response but nothing is huge. I did it more for fact that it will add to all the other modifications I'm doing. And they all feed off each other really well. I'm looking at getting the full CPE exhaust setup. I have a list that goes on lol. I'm also trying to figure out what wheels I want to go with and if I should drop some lowering springs in the car. I'm just trying to get as much feedback from people with these modifications as possible. I think the car sits too high stock.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  9 років тому

      +Michael McCray something you might be interested in if you want a boost gauge is a Bluetooth diagnostic scanner.. you can get them off amazon for $10, they plug into your diagnostic port there below and to the left of your steering wheel, it connects to your phone and you download the Torque app.. get the Pro version and it gives you a live feed of all your sensors on your car, including boost. It's not as convenient as having an actual gauge there on your dash but it's a hell of a lot less expensive, for a temporary reading. Here's a link : www.amazon.com/Vgate-Bluetooth-Scanner-TORQUE-ANDROID/dp/B00AAOOQJC/ref=pd_sim_263_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=41JhRgXChpL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=035G63D5NKPJJGEDXZ8A

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  9 років тому

      +Michael McCray There are all kinds of suspension packages for the optima, I go back and forth on if I want coilovers. It would look sexy as hell and handle better, but it depends on how much of a daily driver it is for you, and your area. I know for me personally, I drive it all the time and go through a lot of steep driveways in my city, and I have to cut the shit out of my wheels or I drag my front bumper, I've already had to replace my front lip once. So if I did a drop it would have to be only 1" or 1.5". Something I KNOW i will do, is get a front strut tower bar, and a sway bar, which both are sold on k5 optima. I've heard really good things about how much they help with handling.

    I know u posted this awhile back but maybe you'll still get this comment. I have a 2011 Kia Optima, but it's the non-turbo w/the 2.4L 200hp naturally aspirated 4cyl. I REALLY wanted the SX but I needed a car ASAP & found this 1. My que is, can I use any of the aftermarket parts u installed on the non-turbo motor. Obviously I wouldn't purchase the blow out valve, but u seem to really know what ur talking about & I'm just looking for suggestions on if or how I can at least get a LIL more power outta this motor...Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx...

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  6 років тому

      Hey man, sorry it took me 3 days to respond to this! To answer your question simply, yes, you can use a lot of the same parts. You don't need the BOV like you said, you won't need the catch can, you won't need an intercooler.. & I'm pretty sure they don't do downpipes for the non-turbo, I think you just get the exhaust system.. I'm talking off the top of my head right now and most of my knowledge is specific to the turbo model, that's what I've done all my research on.
      That being said, some parts do have 2.4 non turbo varients, such as the Injen Intake, and the Ark DT-S exhaust system. The Ark DT-S is the most expensive exhaust for this car, so I recommend looking at other options, Injen, Magnaflow, & Kinetic Motorsports all have systems made specifically for this car, and they run between $800-$900, as opposed to the $1400 I spent on the Ark DT-S system. www.k5optimastore.com/collections/exhaust-systems
      Here is the link for the Injen Intake : www.k5optimastore.com/products/injen?variant=405190169
      Unfortunately it doesn't look like they make a varient for the LAP3 Uncle chip, because that was the single most helpful part that I installed, as far as gaining more power.
      Just doing the intake & exhaust will definitely bump you up with the power, you will feel the difference, AND it is going to sound amazing.. which I know is a big deal to a lot of guys (like myself).. even if you only gained 30 hp, it sounds and feels like you gained 60 lol.

      the basic bolt on will work, i.e. intake, exhuast, spark plugs, but tBH save your money and either buy a turbo kit for the car or save up for a turbo car cus throwing bolt ons onto the N/A you will have miminal performace inmprovement vs bolt ons on turbo car .
      FYI i have the 2015 Optima sx Turbo, and looing to do just about every part the person listed here as it will help the reliability of the car while also giving it the performace upgrade you would expect for about 3,500$ which is the cost of these parts if purchased new...

      I'm not sure if they are talking about the Lap 3 Uncle Chip but in my experience that was the single most important aftermarket upgrade I did to my car as far as noticing a difference in power. That being said, I got it in the highest level 93 octane, and installed it AFTER upgrading my intake, exhaust, and intercooler, so it was able to take advantage of an increased inflow/exhaust.. if you chip a car with no other upgrades, the power increase won't be QUITE as impressive, but nevertheless, it is the best single upgrade you can do

  • @chrisharrison6276

    Do the spark plugs make a difference that you notice? I'm looking for people who are upgrading there Optimas I want some ideas from people

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  5 років тому

      Chris Harrison no, the spark plugs just by themselves are not going to make a noticeable difference. The main reason to replace the plugs are if you run the Lap3 chip, the stock ones have been known in the past to get too hot, fail, or according to some horror stories, break off and cause damage to the engine. Me, i notice a big difference after replacing them, but that’s only because I run rich and the plugs become fouled very quickly, and I notice a drop in MPG over time.. once it gets down to an avg. MPG of 19 or so, I’ll replace them, and it’s back up to 26.
      But again, without running a chip or any other parts, it’s not worth. Put that money towards saving for a good intake & exhaust.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  6 років тому

      I'm running 291 to the wheels, I have the dyno video here: ua-cam.com/video/ojwxD97jiLQ/v-deo.html .. I haven't really considered flashing the ECU because I'm concerned about voiding the warranty while it is still my daily driver.. I just had the engine replaced with an unlimited miles warranty on it for 5 years, all covered under the warranty of the last engine which just blew a couple months ago. The plug and play version of the lap3 makes a big difference as it is, & I don't want to be pushing any more power through a car I'm still using as my daily. Hopefully here in the next year I'll be getting another daily, & then I can get more comfortable with some big power upgrades.. look at a different tune, bigger turbo, & replace some internals so it can handle that much boost over stock.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  8 років тому +2

      hey Grant, well, its a hotly debated subject, but I personally went with Injen because it's a dry intake, I had the K&N and you have to keep it oiled, ALSO, Injen has a Lifetime Warranty, vs I think K&N is 10k? I'll have to check. Injen looks better and I personally think sounds better. They're pretty comparable as far as quality I think but Injen is marginally better with the materials they use. It's a close call, it won't matter too much if you pick one over the other. But I'm completely happy with my choice.

      +RurouniCjuro as far as the intercooler, the wagner tuning intercooler is like 3 times bigger than the stock.. when you google how an intercooler works : "As the air is compressed by a turbo/supercharger it gets very hot, very quickly. As its temperature climbs, its oxygen content (density) drops, so by cooling the air, an intercooler allows denser, more oxygen rich air to the engine, allowing more fuel to be burned, thus improving combustion and giving more power." ... so bigger intercooler, more cool air, more power. Definitely a good investment

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  8 років тому

      +RurouniCjuro "For turbocharged cars, the purpose of an oil catch can is incredibly important. The can should work to prevent blow by of oil, which could lead to dangerous situations of coating couplers, causing them to slide off under boost, coating the fins inside an intercooler which drastically decreases its efficiency, and ultimately end up cooking inside your turbo, contributing to a nasty condition of what is called “oil coking” where the oil turns to a charcoal like substance in the turbo over time. In addition, you don’t want any blow by on your pistons either." -The Torque Post

    I have the same car all stock where can I go to get it tuned I don't know much about cars.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  8 років тому

      if you are looking to tune, a custom dyno tune is the best but finding a dyno willing and able to do it has proved impossible for me here in Texas at least. the easiest option is to just get a plug and play tune (I use the Lap3 tune, Google it, k5optima sells them).. takes 10 minutes max to plug it in and gives instant results. It's a little pricy but it's probably the quickest route to get the most gains in hp. if your state sells 93octane then get the chip programmed for 93 octane, it will be the best. then after that you want to replace your spark plugs with high quality plugs because a high octane tune will burn up stock plugs quick. an oil catch can will help keep your engine protected but isn't as important. next I would look at an air intake system, it's inexpensive and easy to install. then a full exhaust system including a downpipe will get you a lot of extra power at this point, and it's fun because it makes the car sound SO much better.. but expect to spend $800-$1600 depending on what brand you choose... honestly if I could go back I wouldn't get the ARK.. it's amazing but for the price it's minimally better than the cheaper brands. then finally look at getting a Wagner Tuning intercooler. makes a big difference, it's a tough install and costs a few hundred though. an HKS blow off valve really doesn't give any extra power but it sounds cool as hell when you rev up and let off and it makes a very loud distinctive release of boost noise, big head turner.. idk if that's worth $350 or however much it was, I did it though and never regretted it.

      hope that helps out. I had so much fun building my car.. I spent a fair bit but I bought it at 16k miles for $22,000 and it's a 350hp car that gets 30mpg if I take it easy, luxurious on the inside, and looks fantastic. good luck and enjoy the ride my friend

      So you're back to stock? I wonder how the intake was affecting it.. if you had to take the intake off it might have had something to do with compression. Were you 100% sure the intake was installed correctly, everything sealed down with no leaks? I've had hose clamps slip loose before, especially if i had to put it on in a tight spot where i couldnt see what i was doing. I had issues with the blow off hoses mainly, but if something is loosing compression somewhere it throws it all off. I don't know how the chip would mess you up if you put the correct octane in.

      nosir, never heard of anything like that. closest thing I can think of related to what you are saying, is that the stock plugs have been known to burn up and break off into the motor due to their low quality. But the only time I read about something like that happening is on a thread related to tuning, where they guy probably had it tuned to burn real hot and the cheap stock plugs couldn't take it. Moral of the Story: buy some nicer spark plugs.

    Yo bro. Thanks for the knowledge you have shared with us about your Optima. It's much appreciated, but I have a question for you. What if any modifications can you do to a 2015 Kia Optima LX with only a 2.4Liter engine in it. (No Turbo). I'm not trying to be a ricer or anything like that but I would like to push out a bit more performance out of the car, so please give me any suggestions that you have that will give me more performance from my naturally aspirated Optima.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  4 роки тому

      Chatman Shellman yessir, always trying to help folks out when I can!
      So I haven’t done a whole lot of research on the 2.4L, and there isn’t as many parts you can get for it, but I do know there are some exhaust systems made for it, MagnaFlow makes one for the 2.4L Optima for example...
      And an improved intake is always a good move, I know that K&N makes a system for the 2.4L.
      You can find these on the K5optima store, it’s a good reliable store with authentic parts, but I always encourage folks to shop around to try and save money.
      Intake and Exhaust are easy bolt on parts, they will give you a decent HP boost, and of course, you get that addictive “performance sound” that will make driving your car so much more fun and enjoyable.
      I don’t think there are any chips out there for the 2.4L, but you could look... a chip is usually the easiest way to get a significant boost to your performance. Just be wary if you have a warranty because it’ll void it.
      I’m slow about it, but I’ll reply if you have more questions! Hope this helps!!

    hey man I like all your mods. I'm going the same route worn my 2013 sxl that I picked up last month. What is the performance difference you noticed with the performance chip and wager intercooler? big difference in hp and tq? is the ram intake worth it cause it's not a cold air intake?

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  9 років тому

      +Michael McCray if there is any single part to get for the biggest differences in performance, it would be the Lap3 performance chip. I saw my gas milage go up from getting an average of 28 on the hwy to 33 on the hwy, theres a big difference in the pull, and I didn't record top speed or rpm limit before but I was able to bring it up to 150 on the way back from Cali pretty easily. It's about $600 but it's by far the most bang for you buck. I didn't know they had a ram air out for the optima.. the ram airs are better I think because it gets that cold exterior air forced right down it. I didn't worry about that and just got the Injen cold air intake, I know Injen makes a good product and between my front grill and the vented hood I have, I concluded I have enough cool air getting into my engine bay as it is.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  9 років тому

      +Michael McCray as far as the wagner intercooler, I put it in the same night that I plugged in the Lap3 chip so unfortunately I'm the wrong guy to ask about how it feels as a performance difference. I spoke to the owner of K5 Optima about it before I bought it and he sold me on it, I think it's a great upgrade to get, its just difficult to install. I wasn't able to find another way besides taking my entire front end off to get it installed.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  9 років тому

      +Michael McCray if I had advice for you on the first upgrades, it would be to get the chip (be sure you replace your spark plugs with something aftermarket before you chip), then intake, then exhaust, then oil catch can, then intercooler.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  7 років тому +1

      Hey John, I apologize for the delayed response, this semester has been hectic. I had to do some fabrication to get the optima to fit, the stock battery terminals have that 90degree piece on them as I remember.. it fits nicely on the stock battery but it discourages usage of any other battery size. As does the tray it sits in, so get rid of that. I went a little overboard trying to make some terminals of my own that look nice, but in short, you have to replace the 90 degree piece of plastic with a standard battery terminal.

      i just googled a decent battery terminal clamp in 2 seconds.. the truth is that you will probably want to look at what wires you are trying to connect, how many of them there are, and their gauge, and find a clamp that will fit you needs. Remove the stock 90 degree piece and replace it, and you will have no problem hooking up any battery you decide on

    Did your engine fail yet? Mine just went at 96k. Rod bearing. Kia is replacing long block under warranty.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  7 років тому

      no not yet.. I'm still only at 85k. That's a discomforting bit of news, did you have an aftermarket setup similar to my own? And what kind of engine failure was it?

    • @BTrip37
      @BTrip37 7 років тому +1

      Everything under the hood was stock on mine (Although I will be doing some mods, probably lap3, injen intake and a catch can, once the new engine is installed). Dealership confirmed official cause of failure to be a worn rod bearing due to oil starvation, which caused rod knock. They found metal shavings in the oil pan. I took very good care of the car, synthetic oil every 4-5k miles. When they took the engine apart to examine, there was no sludge, so they quickly approved my warranty claim. This is an issue only with engines manufactured in the US, so if you have a Korean built engine, you should be fine. I'm sure you've probably heard by now, but KIA just recalled all the Optima engines from 2011-2014. If yours craps the bed before you hit 120k miles, they will replace it for free, regardless if you are the original owner or not. According to my dealership the replacement engines are manufactured with strengthened bearings, and cleaned differently to fully remove any metal shavings before they leave the factory.

    • @BTrip37
      @BTrip37 7 років тому +1

      My recommendation would be to rip the shit out of your engine before you hit 120k. That way you can get a brand new one and extend the life of your vehicle.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  7 років тому

      WOW, thank you for giving me a heads up about this.. I did some reading and its happened to a couple dozen people if not more, it sounds like a failure of the oil distribution system, like the oil isn't getting to certain parts the way it should. I've been super meticulous about oil changes myself but it doesn't sound like that will help. I'm at 85k miles myself right now, which seems to be the median of when this happens, so I'm scared for my engine lol

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  7 років тому

      A couple questions for you, if you know off the top of your head: if I take it to a dealership today, will they be able to check for defects, and if found, will they offer a replacement... or do I just have to blow it for them to replace it? And secondly, since I have mods, would that void my chances of getting a replacement? Seems like an easy blame, "Oh, your engine blew because of all these crazy aftermarket parts you have on it, so we don't have to give you a new one".

      You can do this with a stock engine and drivetrain. I eventually would like to put a larger turbo in mine and at that point I know I will need to look at replacing some internals.. but for now the car seems to be happy with this extra power. I don't abuse it, I drive pretty easy 95% of the time, and I'm at 72k miles now with no problems, everything still runs smooth.

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  8 років тому

      the closest thing to an internal that you have to worry about is keep nice spark plugs in it if you're running the Lap3 chip.. the stock plugs are no good for it. And I would say replace them every 30k miles at least.. I went 40-45k before I replaced the nice plugs I put in and I started having major issues with no power when I did a hard acceleration, I hypothesized it was incapable of igniting the fuel efficiently. I replaced the plugs and immediately noticed a massive return in power. Moral of the story: if you're running a tune, keep clean plugs in

    • @petrol_prophet
      @petrol_prophet  8 років тому

      as far as the warranty.. it's iffy with as many engine modifications as I have done to mine. The tune will void it without a doubt, but part of the beauty of the Lap3 chip is that you can install and uninstall it within 5 minutes.. so if you need to go to the dealership and don't want to have the tune on it, then it is super easy to take it off and simply put it back on when you're done. I never bothered with such shennanigans because I figured I had gone too far with modification to still have a valid warranty

      hahaha, hey I'm not going to lie, my first car was a 2006 Honda CRV and I tortured that poor thing with all the worst rice mods.. I was 18 and broke and learning though, I had so much fun with it and it's still running strong to this day, my little sister owns it now lol

    Does the Lap3 override the (Max speed 152) governor?

      I wouldn't know.. I took it up to 151 lol I had no idea that the max speed was 152 or I would have tried to push it over that. I just wanted to see if it would go over 150 and as soon as I touched that I let off. It was working hard to get from 140 to 150.

      Hey! I'm just curious, did you ever test the top speed yourself? I still haven't gotten around to bringing her out to the track... or the desert lol

      I drove to San Francisco about a month ago and found a nice stretch of road that was empty and got my car up to 140 before I had to let off due to traffic ahead. I wish I had a little bit more open-road... LOL

      yikes.. yeah dude, I would head out to the desert honestly if you want to go balls to the walls with it.. it takes a good minute to get up to max speed and it's no bueno trying to do that if theres any kind of traffic, hills, or turns for the next couple miles
