It is possible for the fuel injectors to be ticking but not leaking. I have the same exact sound... had three mechanics who have years of experience and all say that sound is normal. One mechanic now an Engineer at Lockheed Martin said it is a normal sound of a worn engine, the engine is still good but worn.
Until now I find that ticking hard to accept, but you can use that ticking sound like motivation to swap the engine with something with a higher output with similar or less weight, all that said its much easier said than done, but definitely possible!

I actually have a 2.5L (325i) motor in it now, it's all tuned and chipped.

My motor is at 26,600miles and makes this noise so I hope after new injectors it should be a little better

Sounds like injectors to me. My 325e makes the same sound. Even after a spot on valve adjustment. I also have larger injectors so it's a little more noticeable.

same sound on my recent purchase of a 89 525i m20b25 engine with documented over 270k miles and thats before the odo broke many years ago.. (before purchase) hmm. i assumed i needed to adjust the valves and probably will so i know when it was done last then see if the sound gets less.

It has a sensor and you can connect the fuel hose

    And what was the issue?

It sounds like excessive engine ticking to me, but I guess that's how M20's just are :P

      Valve gap is correctly set.

Alright, my 85 325e sounds exactly like it, however my issue is that when it starts on cold its instant start. On a short drive or warm engine. It wont start up it's a long crank..I suspect fuel injectors..

@@mauricio9022 I have long crank issues on both cold and hot starts. I believe that it is the 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫.
