A first look at the Arrival Car prototype

- As part of the Arrival partnership with Uber, we invited Uber drivers to join in the design process of the Arrival Car.
We’ve brought those Uber drivers back to give them a first look at the Arrival Car alpha prototype.
Find out what they had to say about the design. From the ceiling and the extra legroom to the interactive display and the driver's seat - every part of the Car was designed with their experience in mind.

It would be useful to be able to move forward the rear passenger seats in order to maximize the boot space, if required.
Exactly what I thought to, some (French) Renault cars had this feature way back.
👍
Yeah there’s like no room for baggage lol
Dude would be awesome,so much more room 🤔
I guess it's a prototype. It would be quite simple to put moveable rear seats in the production model and I agree very necessary.
Love the look. Please make sure six foot plus drivers can adjust the center rear-view mirror out of their line of sight. There is an unfortunate trend of placing mirrors farther down on the windshield that cannot be adjusted up to avoid a forward blind spot for taller drivers. It’s frustrating that such a simple old-tech feature has been turned into a safety problem at the same time we are (rightfully) placing so much effort into high-tech safety features.
Absolutely. What vehicles would you recommend for someone tall? A high Vision line height (floor to top of windshield) is a metric im looking at closely.
Perhaps something like an old scion xb or maybe a truck or transit van is my best bet
Hate the look, hate the entire company who is vashing its investors, this company is worth NOTHING !!!!!
You are doing a great job in making electric vehicles by giving the futuristic design to all types of vehicles and making an amazing product which has everything from design, comfort to technology. It's amazing. 👍👍
Minus all the practicalities of a normal gasoline car*
I just love that mix between futuristic, simple, utilitarian and spacious. A city car that you can load as a small truck and not being worried of breaking it. I'd buy one for myself, but i live in Argentina, where EV's will become the norm in decades, and still being unaffordable.
lol i love how they strategically avoided showing the front of the car. What are you hiding ? ." Lets take a walk around the car" - Immediately cuts to them behind the car . incredible
It's a prototype. Probably not a finished front end. Pretty common.
It was on the table screen, look like your standard electric car front, it likely that hasn't been added to the Alpha design yet.
One day Arrival will actually tell us something range, charging rates etc. I wait with bated breath.
If they make a private use version I would seriously consider buying one.
I totally love the desgin from outer and inner side of the car. Great way for Uber drivers here in London to pick up passangers.
Please Arrival I am a Uber Driver For London:
1. Don't forget to add Usb Charging ports for the passangers at the rear!
2. If there can be some kind of SCREENING PROTECTION **FIXED** (Covid19) from the driver and the passangers that would be brillant?
3. Maybe have the front passanger seat not to be facing forward, but facing towards the back rear?
I would defintely look forward to see the future progress of the new Uber Arrival car, I can not wait for the finale stage for production, do us proud and for the riders too.
You got this Arrival
This would also be a successful delivery van. Tons of interior space despite relatively compact exterior dimensions. And it's electric!
That would seem to be the next logical move, probably after there bus has entered service.
This looks amazing and I'm looking forward to seeing it on the streets.
The option of having a boot space that can have suitcases flat down is super important.
I've worked as an uber driver for a few years now. Previously, I had a small Japanese car, and got caught out a few times with not having enough boot space. My current car is a Mercedes B200 and the boot space is perfect. To take a family of 4 to or from an airport, the car needs to have adequate boot space. The Mercedes B180 has similar boot-space to the Arrival Alpha - I think it will be a bit too small - I guess that's the trade off for having more back seat leg space.
The B200 also has a handy under boot compartment that is super useful for holding cleaning products, my stuff (food, clothing, etc) - things that shouldn't impacted customers usage.
Trust me, you aint gonna see this silly car on the road, as this company is going down as a rocket !
@@alpinblautouren548 Why?
I'd love to see a passenger minivan version of your UPS truck. I currently own a Tesla Model S and an older minivan. I love the power sliding doors of my minivan, but hate having to spend money on gas everyday. If someone were to make an electric minivan, I'd totally be a buyer, and I love the boxy look of your larger van.
It just another carriage design to put on top of there modular chassis to them. I'm sure they could produce one within months. It how they were able to get a this car to drivable prototype so quickly, 6 months, which is probably some sort of record, all the hard parts have been done with their van program, they just take off the carriage and stick the car carriage on top of the chassis.
I suspect through we are more likely to see a small van as there next vehicle, something like Peugeot Partner.
Did you contact them?
What an absolute eyesore! Can you imagine seeing legions of these on the road?!
If it's cheap enough - yeah.
That’s an incredible achievement for a ground up prototype, the Arrival team have done a fantastic R&D job
Could this not be put into production? I’d buy one. Do you have a time line to a full production version?
Well done Arrival 👊🏼
dont talk pish
You need to engineer a sliding mechanism and pillarless door interface
Great idea but practically speaking the boot looks fairly useless and no larger (and possibly smaller) then that of a Prius. You could only get 2 large suitcases in that space. You need to make the car slightly longer so you could fit4 bags across standing on their side and that will be perfect.
prototypes are easy, volume production is hard - come back to this in a couple of years
No need. give it a year and Arrival is a dead cat!
@@alpinblautouren548 I for one, hope not. I want them to succeed, whether they deserve it or not is a different thing. It’s like supporting ur sports team
Looks great! Like the minimalist design :D
Minimalist Arrival, yeah, the price is soon gping to be minimalistic 0,03 cents !
Go for real dedicated buttons for the climate options.
Buttons for climate and volume are faster, easier, safer, more intuitive than touch screens or haptic feedback. Awesome minimalist look of the prototipe but take a look to criticism into the car industry going too far with touch screens and voice assistants that are no really adding value but making more dangerous and harder simple actions.
Also, have a look to Honda magic seats, as a similar solution or sliding seats they can have a huge added value on this car.
I agree. Having absolutely everything on a screen is too much. Something as quick as Climate control and volume shouldn’t take more than 3-4 seconds
Agree I won't buy for sure car with touch buttons for volume and air conditioning
Wrong. Tesla interior controls design is the new standard.
@@GarrettMaring Wrong.
@@GarrettMaring sure, it's the mainstream, is also a marketing decision to look more futuristic and techy. But that does not mean to be better. In fact, some manufactures as Honda have moved backwards from tactile controls to old and more analog ones, following the previous path manufactures had.
Forgot Uber, I this as my personal car. This is awesome. Why aren't more car companies doing this?
I just do not understand why I never hear about Arrival in Media? Their engineering is amazing!
I was a cab driver for 18 years and the one thing I wanted more than any thing else was wipe down seat fabric. Be it leather, faux leather or vinyl, seats that didn't get wet and could be wiped clean. This hasn't addressed that issue so is a huge fail.
Did u try using waterproof covers
Wow it kind of reminds me of the next level version of my classic 2006 Scion xB aka toaster. It was such a fun vehicle to drive. Easy to use. Practical to transport people.
LETS GO!!!! You guys are doing a great job! I’m a very happy investor. This is awesome.
It was a scam! How gullible are you?
Unfortunate experience to read comments from nay-sayers. Living in Canada 300km from my nearest airport I think about the drive quite a bit. I would take a long ride in this vehicle as a passenger any time. From the video it looks fine for the driver. Price conversions considered we are paying 6 euros per gallon in this region for fuel so EV all the way when there is availability. The main holdback is service infrastructure. I think the passenger seat fold down is a win. Few people know that the SmartforTwo (no longer supported in Canada) has a fully fold down passenger seat. When I travel alone I have taken a full size road bike (wheel removed), suitcase, tool box, projector, workshop materials, kit bag, and in some instances the “classic” 24 beer and driven up to 1000km one way. I have no complaints about the cargo capability of this prototype. My cars driven include many late 70’s Chev and Ford, plus the Corolla, Sonata, Windstar, Volvo, Santa Fe, F-150, Canyon, Smart, and currently VW Alltrack. Arrival may never create a footprint here but as a company I am very interested in following you.
I see this company has more prototypes then released products in the market
Great idea. The infinity roof is ideal for countries in Europe where sun isn't so harsh. For the rest of the world, it would be great to have a dimming feature.
Most people in Australia try to cover their panoramic sunroofs because a simple drive would be enough to cause sunburn.
This seems important, that was my first thought when I saw the roof
Thank you for being the only other company aside from Tesla that understands minimalism is best.
Cloth seats are an immediate fail. Constant stains, spills (and smells) when ridesharing. Boot looks too small, too. Extend the rear overhang or slightly reduce rear legroom.
I agree. If you are going to build an expensive plastic Romanian version of the Citroen Berlingo at least make it long enough to carry stuff. As for range, power, speed etc. Expect short, low and slow. Something less than a Romanian car. As for crash protection - probably a total fail.
@Matt P I actually think you're right: In spite of my living and working within 30 minutes of two major airports, I probably have riders with tons of luggage less than six times a year - and such travelers usually order SUVs or vans anyway.
It's looks solid , concise and simplicity with the openness . The journey absolutely full of enjoyments.
"can i get in" "why don't we just walk around it"
Fantastic work guys, this is a very exciting company to watch develop 👍
Absolutely love it. I would purchase this car just for myself, it's great!
you are silly, same as Arrival. So basically aou and Arrival, both of you are silly !!!!
Nicely Designed Guys
love the design, reminds me a lot of my Renault Espace. One of my favorite cars.
Espace, yeah, this Arrival traums is soing to vanish in space! Very soon this endless trauma is finally going to end, the suffering will soon be over, when this company is going to vanish in space as they declare bankruptcy !
Looks great and I wish you every success.
Would be nice to have a decent look at the front of it. I think the only full-on front view was on the tablet display at 00:37.
Soon Arrival will be bankrupt.
Audio and ac controls are the most essentials for everybody that should not be integrated on the screen but should have dedicated knobs.
The Johnny Cab from Total Recall... admit, you took the design from there
This looks amazing and I do understand that the technology isn't there yet to offer proper self-driving capabilities, but I can envision getting in such vehicle in the back seat with the gorgeous glass roof and no one upfront, enjoy the ride and got off at the destination having had an amazing trip.
Can’t wait to see these in use!!!
Will never happen !
Are the seats bullet proof for Uber? I don't see a partition between the back and the driver for Uber. You also want to limit Uber customers from playing with the radio or messing with the glove box and you need to make it easy to clean out when customers can't hold their liquor on weekends. They also like to play their own music and it can take time to configure the radio to connect to their phones so probably a music station in the back they can link to their phones easily.
In my oppinion it is not an advantage to have no physical buttons for the driver. Some buttons as volume, wiper and so on are easier to use while you drive, when they are physical.
Loving This From The Caribbean.
Lower the driver seat all the way to allow drivers to take a nap.
Rear sliding doors could allow easier access for passengers. Any storage space in the froot/frunk?
Awesome works Arrival :) I wish to work with you guys someday.
one more year and this company is dead !!!!!
@@alpinblautouren548 why? Only if you kids stop worshipping Elon and Tesla.
I find this tesla design simplicity very cumbersome. You need to give certain direct buttons or knobs for frequently used functions like air conditioning, volume, side mirror settings etc.
I think you guys are doing a great job. I can see many details in the video, but you didn´t really talk us through. I wish there would be a bit more real content and less marketing talk. Nevertheless: go on :) I think you have a nice prototype there!
Arrival soon to be bankrupt.
If you were to build a purpose built vehicle for Uber in the US, you need 3rd row seating. The perfect Uber vehicle is the one that can except all trips. Uber XL has to be a 7 seater. A larger vehicle will be less efficient, but not by much. Check out the ford flex. Unlike a SUV, you don't have to climb up to get in, but you have room for more passengers.
Design is amazing 👍
It looks great 👌
Very nice - especially for first working prototype. No doubt there will be many improvements in the next year and a half before production.
One suggestion - makes sense that the seats sit back like that by default. But to accommodate airport runs etc They should be able to be moved forward if additional space is needed for baggage in the boot. Also if they could be moved forward a ramp could be lowered, a wheel chair could be loaded into the vehicle via the boot.
Ok! Your marketing team is getting timings on these drops right ish 👍🏽
Very cool. Passengers love the glass rooftop of my Model Y so I imagine they'll love this one too. Love to see more vehicle design for ridehail drivers.
Would be cool to present this at Curbivore Conference in January in LA if you guys are interested :)
You should email them to partner up with them.
What is so wrong about giving AN OPTION for a sunroof cover? Blows my mind.
Are you blind ???? This 'car' is the worst i have seen in my life !!!!! Arrival is going nowhere !!!!!
Love it - I want one as a family car!
You aint got no taste, like Arrival aint got no taste. Price soon at 0,03 cents!
The infinity roof looks dope but what’s going to happen on hot days? That car will be too hot to drive in the summers.
Its called AC
Feel like drivers would want a more conventional dash as well as the touch screen. If they have a map up can they not see if their lights or indicators are on?
I think it's great. Keep up the great work! Happy investor.
NEED MORE COMPETITION
Why is this not on your TWITTER PAGE
The Espace reinvented. Looks cool.
Does it have a spare tyre and where is it kept?
(1) especially during corona one might want a physical plexiglass separation between driver and passengers. (2) many people drive for both uber and lyft etc. is this just an uber car, or can the driver switch apps on the screen and switch providers at will? Would be nice if you can add ride hailing apps, and perhaps a meta app that compares uber vs lyft so the driver can choose which company to pick at that instance.
Wow
You doing great
Pleas when will it be out for Market
Can’t wait to get one for myself
A few issues I noticed were:
The boot space could be improved, if it's footprint is that of a Golf a slight increase in length shouldn't be an issue.
The heating issue due to the glass roof, they haven't really spoken about that.
If it's a driver centric car, you really should not make it all touchscreen no driver likes that. Add necessary button and knobs.
And maybe make it a little more aesthetically pleasing, it looks very utilitarian; same goes for the interior. An Uber driver will be spending his entire day in there, everyday, make it a bit more welcoming. Nothing fancy, just something to look forward to.
Love the legroom, can comfortably seat three people. Amazing!
Just thinking out loud,
Try considering a solar rooftop instead of a sunroof. I say this because here in Nigeria and most African countries the heat from the sun is already much, so people wouldn't need the sunroof and more heat in the car. Rather they would need more power to take them through the day mostly, with the air conditioning on. I believe the prototype's an EV, a solar rooftop means more power to charge its batteries and more power to drive around.
Great progress. Suggest a rear display to allow for monetization opportunities. E.g. getting dropped off at the game, tap display to book pre or post game dinner reservations. If Uber knows I'm a tourist, help me use Uber to book shows, attractions, and to pick me up before those future events.
The display should be linked to Uber so that it knows who I am, my profile, my home location, my payment method, etc.
I remember there was a car that could fold up the front seat from behind, such that more space is created for luggage
London black cabs don't have a front seat.
Its a storage space
I can see problems with visibility out the back window when it's full up back there.
If the back door had a fold across the middle then you could also have a pull out storage underneath that would tuck away when not needed.
Design is one thing, production a another.
How is the business model? Does a uber driver buys it themselves? Does Uber provide it to them on lease? Can they pick it up at a hub? Alos what to do with eprsonal use, do you have 2 cars now? Where would you park a second car?
It would be great if the front passenger seat could swivel backwards so that all passengers could face each other.
Put a giant soundproof wall between the driver and the animals in back.
Front passenger seat doesn't actually go under the dash space Only he head rest goes a small way under
This is excellent, very nice work.
Great job, you remade the model 3 but needlessly tall and way less aerodynamic, I’m imagining you’re taking a huge range impact because of that
Is there a reason why you haven't gotten in touch with Paccar?
Would be interesting to know the drag coefficient with this shape and kW/mile consumption
That is a really cool car, now you have to produce at least 10-20 millions of them around the world.
I don't know about rideshare? But if you are going to reinvent the taxi it should have self closing doors. Especially on the passenger doors as people do not always close them properly. So the driver should be able to either reopen then close the door with a mechanism. Or be able to reach over and slightly open then close the rear doors. The doors on a public passenger vehicle take a lot of beating from the continuous opening and closing or slamming. The hinges wear out. I don't know about the glass roof? It might be nice for short trips in cloudy climates. But the driver is going to get fried in a sunny climate. The wiring loom for the top light, dispatch system, security camera's, panic button, meter and electronic payment system should be already installed at the factory. Instead of having to take it to an auto electrician to fit out the vehicle. It's one thing to put mobile people in it. Can you get an elderly person to step into it? They cannot get into high vehicles. Plus the driver has to put their walker, folding or otherwise somewhere where it will not move. Central locking and lockable windows are important. As well as reclining seats. If the driver is doing a 16+ hour shift it is handy to have a comfortable reclining seat so you can put it back flat and take a nap in a side street. Also somewhere to put paperwork in the drivers door large enough for a A4 folder to write on. I think I covered everything.
Love it..just get rid of the A pillar blindspot for the next iteration.
Only 2 large suit cases in the boot isn't a lot when 4 passengers are heading to an airport. If a family are heading to an airport with a pushchair a couple of children and some bags, you'll need two taxi's.
Looks very similar to Canoo to me, very well designed and cool idea though.
as much as i love it and anything arrival does...when i want to go to the airport with a 4 person family, fully stacked with at least 4 suitcases, a duffle and various backpacks - the trunk is waaaaaaay too small. rn it looks like it's made for the occasional drive as a solo person or a couple with a latte in hands.
your personal case is very specific, no point in tailoring all vehicles for your needs. It would be a waste of resources 99% of the time.
This vehicle is not meant specifically for personal use, instead it’s tailored for ride hailing. Even if your talking about ride hailing to the airport, must ride hailing providers have a distinction between normal and XL. In your case you wouldn’t call a normal sized vehicle.
@@PixelSchmiede thanks for letting me know what i would and wouldn't ;)
@@PixelSchmiede Exactly! Perhaps a longer wheelbase version with a third row of foldable seats will be built to take XL fares?
If you had that much luggage I think you'd be better off booking a 7-seater.
It’s awesome! As long as they get through manufacturing in a big scale which is the difficult part of the car industry
Taxis aren't manufactured on a large scale. The London Black Cab only about 5,000 a year are made.
Should probably have some kind of hitch to install a bike rack on the back, don't miss the opportunity.
Are you going to release this as a small (VW Caddy size) panel van? If so, I'm very interested.
By the way, your 'Contact Us' doesn't work on your website. The 'Captcha' doesn't show, and thus prevents the form being sent. I presume you are paying some IT person a lot of money deal with your website!
How is it different from other electric vehicles? And when will a lot of production be possible?
It's a purpose built ride-hail EV that prioritises the passenger experience as much as the drivers. The rear leg and head room is larger than a huge Rolls-Royce, whilst having the footprint of a small family car! It will also have full ride-hail App integration from companies like Uber. Can any other vehicle make these claims?
Buying Arrival stock today. You guys rock!!
Infinity roof makes it look cold though
Looks like the LEVC TX has some competition
I like how it has the little knobs on the steering wheel like a tesla
I like the big screen like a tesla
I like the this pretty much is a tesla van
How original.
What's the maximum range? Dual motors for an AWD experience? Is there a frunk?
Introducing the 2021 Oldsmobile Silhouette.
A PHEV Mazda 5 wouldn't need a ground-up redesign, or give drivers sticker shock or range anxiety ... but maybe I'm old-fashioned.
Please make also people version with sliding door for even easier entry. Families will love durability of inside. I wioul love 7 seat version but shorter than 4,9m:)
What sort of crumple zone dynamics do you have in the car with such forward-sitting front seats?
not gonna lie I thought Gordon Ramsay was in this video
Imagine if they make one called the Oovoo Javer
With COVID now becomming a regular occurrance, will some sort of separation panelling be available to comply with any regulations to maintain social distancing?
After all the hard work. You guys ended up with a Renault espace
Amazing design. They do need hard button/knobs for volume and mirror adjustments. Tesla 3 did away with it, and it's a pain to adjust it while driving, you have to take your eyes off the rd and fi e the right menu/button on the screen, very dangerous.
