- An intimate portrait of a polygamist family in a rural Iranian village. The intricacies of the relationships between the four wives, their husband, their astoundingly free-spoken mother-in-law and their numerous children. Sometimes humorous and often heartbreaking, this film follows the daily lives of the wives whose situation has turned them into both bitter rivals and co-conspirators against their abusive husband.
For those of you who call this documentary lovely, there is constant language of abuse and cursing toward all 4 women. All the ladies, are constantly complaining about his abuse and physical abuse. This dude is a pervert. Not a provider. He is providing the bare minimum.
I think, what they mean is that it's a well-made documentary. It shows us the real picture of what goes around in the world

I think people call it lovely because it is unadulterated truth. Their situation by most western standards is unacceptable, but it is their truth. There is something incredibly respectable about that.

For the wife who cannot have a child, please take it as a blessing in disguise because that husband can not really provide for himself, his a multiple wives much more so his many children. They have to fight over food, have dirt floors, unfinished construction of their homes. If she is childless, she can take good care more of herself, get a divorce and remarry somebody else and be free from this type of husband giving all of them a poor life...
Ziba is so likeable, always smiling. Its obvious that she has a good heart. She deserves better. I hope she left that abusive, horrible man

Maybe we would never be able to see the update. The filmmaker was banned by Iranian government halfway from filming. The rest half was completed by her daughter. That's why we saw a gap of 2 years midway. I pray to the divine for their well being.

@@mammoney3668 Yes... because it's almost always the men who benefit from this arrangement, and also men who initiate them (oftentimes literally buying the woman from her father.) There are modern people who practice polyamory and ENM but the men/women/whatever genders are usually seen as equal partners. Those relationships also thrive when diplomacy and high levels of communication are used.

I love documentaries in general but this has always been my favorite one. Its so raw and real... as an american it truly places you in the middle of their lives that are hard for us to even fathom. Excellent film, I know we wont get an update but I hope these women and their children are doing well.
It shouldn't be that difficult for an American to fathom. Just look at utah! At least these people stop at 4 wives whereas in parts of the US the numbers are unlimited.

5 is not lawful (unless he divorced 1 or 1 dies) and Iran is under a type of Shia Sharia law which would enforce this.

Right, i can't believe i watched this with 15 and now 19 and i was crazy searching for information everywhere, but there is nothing about what happened to them😭😭 i wish the producer nahid persson (idnt remember well the name) sees all this comments and decides to make a continuation. But for what i have known, she was banned from iran when she was filming this, so maybe is difficult for her going there for legal problems. And probably some of this clips we see here are staged and not 100% true. The husband in the video probably is dead by now or something happened because it's been too long, maybe the wives are leaving all together, or separated and some of the kids are gone and married to others.
It's been exactly 14 years since this was broadcast, 15 in december. And this was being recorded for 2 years. So it might been 16 years ago when this was being first recorded.

The son is a predator, who preys on the village’s young, vulnerable girls. It Seems as if , after a few years, he becomes tired of the new wife, and roams around for a new one. So sad. Having said that, I have to give the old bloke credit for making beautiful kids, and providing well for his family, because by the village standards, he is doing quite well. I wish they had made a reality show about this family. I can assure you I wouldn't miss an episode, because to date, I have watched this piece five times and counting. I really enjoyed it!!!!!

I asked my mom what dialect this is because I read from the other Iranians that they could not understand (I couldn't either). She understood completely because we are of Azeri Persian descent. These people come from a really rural/small village in the mountains near the Azerbaijan side in Iran. Their first language is Turkish, but a specific dialect of Turkish, with some of the words mixed with Farsi and Kurdish. Their form of speech shows that even though they are villagers, these people are like "the villagers of villagers" in their seclusion because of how slurred they sound -- no Arabic words anywhere. I thought it was interesting that my mom said this is what "poor people" talked like in the past and that probably only the older Azeris in Iran (Pre-Islamic Revolution) can understand. Not all Azeris speak like this as there are different types of speech used by a person's socioeconomic standing. Lastly, she doesn't know if the younger ones would know what they are saying because they are learning mostly Farsi in school. So this film serves both as a sociological/historical account and a linguistic record of a dying dialect.
This is a village in Kharameh, Fars province, they speak Persian with Fars dialects, have nothing to do with Azeris or Azerbaijan.

Azaris are in the north mostly that region is fars region in the South around Shiraz… they speak rural persian which is next to pahlavi and not influenced by tehrani persian… but those people seems like beeing from kurdish tribe Amari from cyrus was descendant also… only a kurd of the Amari tribe can recognize it from the mother… from what ? Only kurds can understand it… actually they are today speaking a language called persian .Not old persian. They changed it 2 times in history like their religions….

Actually Iran is very diverse and there are also people living with a more modern lifestyle, "white marriages" (cohabitation) is also popular there where a couple isn't married but lives together and often has children together. To be honest God forbid this from happening to anyone, but if I were one of the wives, I would just elope with the cameraman if he was single and hope for the best.
