Polygamist Mafia: Escaping The Kingston Clan

  • Although the mainstream Mormon church abandoned polygamy over 100 years ago, many splinter groups across Utah still practice plural marriage. One such group is the Kingston Clan, known to members as The Order. The Kingstons live in Salt Lake City and run their religion like a secretive business empire.
VICE meets Joe Robinson, a young man banished from The Order and trying to build a new life around his true passion: being a magician.

I’ve ran into him a couple times here in SLC. He is an unbelievably strong person. I grew up gay in the LDS church (and that was horrible) so I couldn’t even imagine what it was like for him. Part of the reason I haven’t moved from SLC yet, aside from loving it here, is that I want to continue working with local political and activist groups to take down the Kingston clan through legislation.

@@ethanahmu6149 good for you Ethan! they gotta go those people are hurting people they’re sick abusive people. Salt Lake City is a Beautiful Pl., Utah is a beautiful place but like many beautiful places you can hear the cries of the spirits of boys and girls in the wind and it’s a very sad place. But really that’s our world; you hear those cries in Australia, you hear it in Canada, and in India and Cambodia other places where people in power enslave and traffic children and do very cruel and horrible things to children. And you may not know about the scandals of those places, and Id encourage you to learn about these shameful atrocities. governments, especially here in the rich and powerful west, is good at concealing their evil, including our own government which has actually done terrible things to its own people let alone people in foreign lands. The Men at the top want to own women and they want to abuse girls and they want to conceal it under supposed religious beliefs. I’m gay as well and I grew up in the Roman catholic church I went to 12 years of Catholic school it was a total mindfuck and it took me the next 40 years to unwind from it but they have absolutely no moral authority when their priest abuse children and they don’t do anything about it it’s been going on probably for at least 1000 years. Yeah so stay in Salt Lake City and be a part of the healing! Violence, genocide, inflicting pain on the innocent and the defenseless, and the stealing of resources, and the starvation of people, all these things have been going on forever and it’s just tiring talking about it, But we never give in!what I get encouraged about is seeing the incredible strength of an individual human spirit in surviving those things and freeing one’s self so just remember that they really can’t destroy us.

13 siblings is already a barely feasible number for one person, 157 is downright absurd even if the guy has had 14 wives (I had to look it up). How do you even have time to cause 157 pregnancies? Joe's dad, based on the info I could find, is in his 70's now. Even assuming Ortell got him hitched promptly at 18, that's an outrageous number of kids to have in probably less than 50 years (since Joe has said in interviews that his dad may have had more children since he left, so that 157 isn't his lifetime total).

Well, I understand why you stopped seeing both sides. This video triggered me.
But people who choose bisexuality choose what kind of sex organ juices they want smeared everywhere...what about them?
Also, I feel polygamy should not be made a criminal offense, just like gay civil union.
As a straight someone in an relationship who doesn't choose to follow or take part in any religious practice, I feel the terminology should be adjusted for everyone. Marriage has traditionally been a celebration of heterosexual union under a deity like God or Allah, or set of deities like those who worship Paganism. In my opinion, the term "marriage" belongs to the religions that practice marriage, because for them it is a ceremony of union under their deity/deities. I feel Civil Union should be the term for any instance the government recognizes as a union of finances and families, regardless of religious choice.
I feel this is what the government should call people they recognize as being a pair (or more) of spouses that should come with all of the governmental benefits and detractions of a heterosexual union (marriage). I also feel like all marriages that have taken place should be reworded in any legal documentation to "civil union" to prevent any form of future discrimination based on the possibility of selecting "single married or civil union" on forms and applications. In my opinion, this is a seperation of church and state issue, as well as a terminology issue, and its bullshit that those diaper sniper fucks in this kingston community can get away with kiddie diddling while simultaneously making polygamy look like the real issue.
Targeting polygamy would be an easy way to break these kinds of groups up, but it will also damage those who just want to be polygamous outside of any religious practice, and those who are part of a polygamous religion as well.
They should be targeting the incest going on in that community, because incest is ILLEGAL in Utah.

I'm technically fine with polygamy. I went to a university with a Muslim community. I had classmates who were 1st, 2nd or third wives. One particular friend of mine who helped me fit in was a first wife who pursued education first and wants to have a career on her own. Her husband understood and they decided not to have children between them until then. The second wife and 3rd wife had them for them. And she's still a mother of 5 children prior before she became a third year. She says she's not any less of a wife compared to the other two, and doesn't mean her husband's love for her is less as well. He fully supports her every step of the way.
What goes off the charts is that you marry 10, 15 or 20 women and don't have the financial means to support such family. LIKE, COME ON, TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY!

Denied medical care unless they are on the verge of death, denying a boy to inherit the majority of his mothers belongings, etc. That is plain disgusting, that should be criminalized for sure.

In India there is a group that allows women to have multiple Husbands. A form of polygamy in which a woman takes two or more husbands at the same time. Polyandry is contrasted with polygyny, involving one male and two or more females. If a marriage involves a plural number of "husbands and wives" participants of each gender, then it can be called polyamory,[1] group or conjoint marriage.[2] In its broadest use, polyandry refers to sexual relations with multiple males within marriage.Of the 1,231 societies listed in the 1980 Ethnographic Atlas, 186 were found to be monogamous; 453 had occasional polygyny; 588 had more frequent polygyny; and 4 had polyandry.

The Mormon answer is that men have the priesthood. Women get to heaven through marriage of a godly man. Through that vein, if your husband is ungodly/doesn't pay tithe/etc, the wife still cannot go to heaven. So "godly" men marry many women to "save them"

I came here after reading a book on mormon history and... I'm still in shock. How can people be so messed up? I just wanna give these people a hug. Good on those people for getting out of the cult environment. That's stuff no child should experience. Cult social psychology is terrifying. This video shows nothing though. The depth of the madness is seriously some Quentin Tarantino stuff. We're talking silencing by murder, plenty of all types of abuse, slavery, you name it. Guilt, gaslighting, total mind control, all the worst stuff you'd think of and then some. It's like a mix of 3 things: a church, an incestuous cult, and a ruthless gang. It's absolute madness.
