My 2019 Mac Pro Audio Review! This covers 28-Core performance in Logic Pro X with over a hundred tracks, hundreds of plugins and casually creating a song from start to finish in 2 hours. There was a lot of doubt with the state of audio with the Mac Pro including Catalina stability but the results surprised me.

Jonathan, you are definitely a creative dude and I will give you that with this video. I didn’t consider it a review in the traditional sense and from the title that wasn’t your end goal. Great way to innovate sir. Hope to see more awesome videos soon. And by awesome I meant like this one.
This is so good
Im going to need this song and album on Spotify asap fam.
I loved your last video of unboxing the mac pro and the pro display xdr in the long format, I'm not sure if that is what it is called. Can you please do some if not all your videos in that format?
You really need to do more real life videos like this. This was probably one of the best ones you have done. Plus exposing your viewers to WOLF is spot on. Easily now added to my playlist.
Ok him recording a sample of his voice and dropping it from the iPhone to the Mac and dropping it into the track to work on it was insane 🤯
@M4HIR PLAYS I know but that's baffling 🤯
@@chronosxiii4702 Lots of people do it! You need something really rough, like a structure to lay down the rest of the track with. It obv won't make it into the mix though.
That’s the beauty of Airdrop and the Apple ecosystem
You’ve never used airdrop?
That was awesome. I enjoyed this myself and will be trying it.
my cpu running this video: 70%
14% CPU usage for me with my Xeon E1231 V3 from 2014...
@@a64738 at 4k its using like 40% cpu usage sometimes less athlon x4 860k oc 4,2ghz
1-3% here. AMD Ryzen 3900X
I have an i5 2500k oc
Also 80 -100% usage if I watch 8k youtube with lot of stuttering and stop and the same on my new 8 core at 4,7Ghz... And 4k 50%, youtube really is CPU demanding. 8k only worked without stuttering in Linux mint...
This is how reviews of “pro” products should actually be... seeing actual pros push the limits on a high end machine, not reiterating what I can read on the products box. And of course it was beautifully shot and edited.
Pushing the limits? They barely went above 20% CPU load 🙄. And why do you need a 6k monitor for music? 🙄 Basically they could have done the same thing on the 18 core iMac
@@SnorryHobo They said in the video that it was overkill. Wake up..
@@BrawndoQC So basically not even pros need this? if these pros are stressing the system and just getting 20% CPU load... stupidest machine ever? or these pros are stupid on how they stress the machine? Again why 6K monitor for music?
@@personalgao Overkill for music.. You don't need to spec it as crazy for music prod nor use that monitor.
@@SnorryHobo pushing the limit based on the use case... a music producer wouldn't actually use a $52,000 machine and this review actually highlights that point. That's the take away you should have gotten, using a Mac Pro for (perhaps) the highest level of music production is absolutely overkill. That's something that can only be found in this sort of review. The next (obvious) step would be to perform this same review on VFX creators, Coding, BI databases, etc. The point I was making is this is how Pro equipment should actually be reviewed.
Needs a part two with animators, videographers, vfx artists etc. This was truly amazing.
Yes! That would be amazing
Mac OS is what that makes this Mac Pro viable, I want TDL to get Linus so that he can bring his Hackintosh with that Threadripper, if they are so amazed by that 28 core Xeon, they will go nuts when they will see that 32 core monster with better IPC and faster GPUs. Mac OS is great, but I think with a little work you can really built a better system for 1/10 the price. But yes, the experience Apple gives is really mind boggling, but I don't think its worth the extra 40000$. Reply if you disagree, we can have a debate on this.
Agree that video work is far more intensive than audio, so it would be interesting to see the Mac Pro put to that test. HOWEVER, as a music/audio guy this was absolutely refreshing, because it honestly seems like 99% of computer performance reviews exclusively talk about video work and leave us audio guys in the dark. There are quirks specific to audio that get missed in those reviews.
@@j3tman Audio making is one of the hardest in my opinion as its results cannot be seen with your eyes, the hardware is really important when it comes to audio. Plus, audio devices are really prone to electrical disturbances. Bring your phone near a audio jack and it might screw the whole session, rare but it still happens.
@@arkaprabha.chakraborty Lost you at 1/10 of the price..
The way he used his vocals on the fly like that was genius. True master of his art.
yeah its as you could feel his synapses go crazy. i need this, i need that, phone, record, send, import & BAM, next!
Lol, if that's genius, then I guess I'm the new Mozart.
@@daritter I kinda agree with you. Scatting and mumbling rhythms/melodies into your session is not that "genius". It was catchy and sounded but otherwise, eh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
...& airdropped it as if it was nothing
I was like whaat!!! Je makes beats in a split second! So cool to see how fast he set this tune up
I don't remember the last time I was so glued on to watching a tech video. This was. Different, indeed.
Almost made me late for work
Yup, completely agree. This was super cool.
COMPLETELY agree 17 minutes later with my head 5 inches from the screen. I was glued just like you.
The Henny on iPad video is up there though, just watching real professionals working is mesmerizing
This is how tech videos should be made. Bottom line. Mesmerizing and hella entertaining. Awesome! Great job JoMo
This takes tech reviews to a different level - no one is doing anything like this (apple should use this for one of their ads)
It IS an Apple ad.
yh love watching reviews like this-just shows the power of the stuff
Yeah that song is apple music exclusive so this is definitely an ad (Edit: actually just found wolf on Spotify. She's somewhere around the 100th search result when typing in "wolf" and clicking on 'see all artists'. I have NO IDEA how spotify's search results work. She was only the 3rd 'Wolf' on that list)
It is an Apple advert it’s pure propaganda. Price was never mentioned .
I've never made a comment on a video. I'm doing it now because you took a "computer review" and truly made it an emotionally moving piece of art. With a capital ART.
Good Job, Jonathan Morrison.
I love when Jonathan does the deep dives like this. It's like tech took the form of a big cozy sweater.
Gabriel couldn’t describe it better
I think he must be paid by apple😉
There is nothing pro in this video except the producers involved. You could have them in front of a $2000 3950X threadripper machine and they would get the same, or better performance. Not to mention, Catalina cuts support for most of their bread and butter plugins.
I like the fact Jonathan is giving us different professionals perspective of the Mac pro
FANTASTIC job Jonathan!!!!
Dude thank you!
Yep best review I have ever seen
“The best Mac Pro review ever”
Everyone 2019
It is, finally one video that show who use that stuff.. instead of, iT's ExPeNsIve!
How is this a Mac Pro review?
@@roberthardy5171 How it can be used, not people like you bitching about the price.
Brawndo yeah I get that but this isn’t a review of the product to me. It’s someone producing a song. Which is great but if he produced a song on Windows 95 or on this machine... I wouldn’t know the difference. This is literally just a music production video to me and I suspect most others
@@roberthardy5171 What industry are you in that you need power/MacOS? I could point you to a few reviews.
Loved seeing him record audio on his iPhone, use AirDrop, and send it to the session wirelessly. Bravo.
Kane and Pia Muehlenbeck I’m gonna be a fanboy for a bit. The Apple ecosystem is amazing.
It's like watching the ultimate apple flex ad
It’s so good. And then so useful for sharing with other people in the room or sending it to your iPad or Macbook and taking it with you.
The almighty Apple ecosystem at work
No one would do that in a professional environment.
Bro, as a music producer myself, I truly appreciate these audio-professional-esque reviews that you've blessed us with lately. Huge props!!
Same. The only tech reviewer who is focusing on audio professionals over video professionals (for the moment). I do appreciate reviews with light on other aspects but still... Love for all.
It’s insane how these music producers creating music is so natural. On the spot lmao, it’s mind blowing.
It’s beautiful to see these talented people come together and create something amazing. You can see the passion in their eyes throughout lol.
Usb 2 is not working with music stuff on that apple you know that?
This literally brought tears to my eyes. The creativity combined with the tech is astounding....but...the creativity. Wow!
Honestly at one point i didnt care at all about the MacPro, i was just admiring how two genius were creating music!
Andre Tennis that’s all I thought about the entire video
Thats what A professional tool is supposed to do. Get outta of the way so the artist can do their work. If all you can focus on is the work being done id say they tool has done its job.
i love how they work with the machine. like the creativity just flow through, when he start to play some chords on the keyboard and especially when the dude start to record his voice and Airdrop the sample to Mac Pro. that's pro level multitasking...
Apple should use some of this video footage for their ad.
its already a great ad stand on its own.
It is an advert price was never mentioned and the PC equivalent was never brought out.
loving these video "interviews" with music pros. keep them coming
If you use a headphone, this is hands down the best review I’ve watched in my life. Thanks Jonathan for staying true to yourself and making amazing videos. Cheers. Keep on keeping on.
I love when the dude pulls out his iPhone to record a vocal and then starts editing it on a $30k+ machine.

Aaron Abernethy nail on head
ufster81 And you’d not be able to use macOS. Which would make it a non starter for pros who rely on FCPX, Logic…

This was the most creative review of a product I’ve ever seen! Super dope stuff from you contributed to the video.
Been watching this over and over again. Fantastic behind the scenes view of some Sunday lazy musical creativity with mesmerising result.
Airdrop the real MVP
Underrated
I use airdrop so much, I miss it when I have to use windows
The hugest omission in Windows, and no alternative even comes close or works as well. If the guy had to export and email the sound clip to himself he might have lost his train of thought or gotten pulled out of the creative process, little details make all the difference.

This video is crazy i enjoyed every second, wow keep doing this collabs!
Finally, a perspective on a Mac's performance outside of gaming and video production! Well done!
People did gaming tests?
Rexac • they always do gaming tests on Mac computers
Well, this is not a computer designed for gaming! I mean it can do that (of course), but this is not the computer for Daddy to give to his kid and say "here son, go play CSGO!!" This is a computer meant for exactly this, music industry and video editing, video creating. Anyone with common sense can see that, only the Apple haters say "I can build a PC with that money..", but can it do the same as this?? Not a Apple computer user myself because I've built my own computers for the last 20 years, but I'm smart enough to understand who this thing is meant for. So all you Apple haters STFU this computer is not for you!!
CasualGamerPT who is hating lol but I do agree with you if you wanna play games PC is right for you. This is the kind of computer for more professional usage. That’s why I never understood why do gaming tests on a Mac. Because I’m pretty sure if you can afford a Mac you most definitely can get a pc for games.
@@k3vin351053 I wasn't saying people in the comments wore hating!! Maybe my bad writing, sry! I was trying to say that WDS was right! And you're also right, gaming buy a PC and a laptop, working is for Apple computers any of them!
I live the look on his face as he’s making this masterpiece. He seems so in love with the work done in this video. Best collaboration video of 2019 for sure
@Vijay Britto Maybe it is a throwaway song, but it doesn't really matter. It's an artisan video, like an expert woodworker making a bowl or a coffee table - It's riveting for those of us who admire the skill to make such a thing in an afternoon.
First Track ID is Chlorine - WOLF (Now on Shazam)
By far the best, the best video i’ve seen !!!!!! Congrats Jonathan!!! Desde Ecuador with love.
Unbelievably good review, that iPhone recording air dropped and edited was insane
I know right
The eco system is unbelievable you convenient
why would a studio of this caliber rely on an iPhone mic for recording? Why didn't they use a studio mic connected to the mac pro?
Olaf Hichwa He distorted the quality afterwards anyway; therefore, he didn’t need a studio quality microphone. iPhone & AirDrop was extremely convenient. Saved lots of time.
@@olafhichwa8962 The iPhone mic is really good, works perfectly well for what he was using the audio clip for, especially after all the added effects
It’s not a review and I don’t think airdropping audio recorded from an iPhone is something commonly done if ever in an actual studio recording.
You should turn this into a series. I love to watch behind the scenes work with music producers. Interesting af.
Absolutley

Jonathan, I just want to applaud you on how you let yourself melt into the background in this video, let the content speak for itself. You captured art coming to life, providing us mere mortals with a taste of what a process like this feels like to those involved. Cinematography on point, the music is incredible, so much talent in a single room. But again, above all, you dropping away into the background and letting this play out makes this one of the best youtube videos of 2019.
Freaking amazing video Jonathan! What an amazing showcase of artists using tech and talent in perfect harmony.

the very reason how he was able to airdrop that sample into logic pro is why people continue to use apple products
Exactly my thought when that part came lol
I usually don't comment but reading all this BS is getting me triggered. What he did with his phone is just to keep all fanboys happy. Anyone with a setup this expensive ( or even cheap one for that matter ) would have a mic on his desk ( a 20 usd one would be even better than the iphone... ) connected to one of the 10 ( or more ) inputs of his soundcard. No need to switch on your phone , launch your app, cast it to your destop and drag it into you DAW. Fanboys grow up
