What Weird PCIe Expansion Cards Work in Mac Pro?

- Apple's new Mac Pro tower has something PC users are all too familiar with: PCIe slots. What devices work inside of Mac Pro and macOS? Let's find out!

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB - amzn.to/34Mlequ
M.2 to PCIe Adapter - amzn.to/34M7hsy
eBay U.2 drives - ebay.to/2tHfj9z
U.2 to PCIe Adapter - amzn.to/2PIU6o9

The new Mac Pro has been released to the fanfare of its pro users who have been starved of a decent workstation option for years. While many argue about the value proposition and the preposterously high $5,999 starting price point, nobody is arguing about the added value of good 'ol-tried and true-PCIe slots. Will an PCIe NVMe SSD work inside of Mac Pro? What about a 4K Capture Card to use in Blackmagic's Davinci Resolve or OBS for streaming? Or, how about a USB expansion card to add to the relatively scant I/O? Perhaps a replacement GPU from NVIDIA would work for gaming on a Mac? Or, maybe, a sound card with a reasonably high end DAC and headphone amplifier? As a follow-up to our Mac Pro teardown and our Mac Pro review which will be forthcoming, we answer the question: what stuff can you put in a Mac? - Наука та технологія
Items of note:
At 5:18, I moderately imply that U.2 drives are not PCIe drives. They are. I knew this and apologize for the lack of specificity.
At 5:25, I incorrectly state that there are PCIe x8+ drives available and there are not yet. At least, not really. Some adapters are available for M.2 drives that assigns 4x pins to each M.2 in a caddy but that’s it.
TL;DR I didn’t script this video and it shows. My apologies. I try to make errors in videos as seldom as possible but sometimes I miss the mark.
Go on, advertise Linus's undies as well :)
That's totally fine! You don't have to apologise. Thanks for the video 🤘🏻

Thanks for the corrections. What's really weird is that the Intel U.2 SSD doesn't work, but the Samsung M.2 SSD does. Both are PCIe NVMe drives, and should work with a generic NVMe driver.
My guess is that Apple's NVMe driver whitelists specific vendor IDs. Samsung made the controllers for Apple's NVMe drives before Apple switched to their own controllers, so it would be logical for macOS to whitelist Samsung controllers.
Uh, you can get PCIe x8 NVMe drives. They are not in the m.2 formfactor though. E.g. www.samsung.com/semiconductor/ssd/enterprise-ssd/MZPLL3T2HMLS/
You can get the amount of bandwidth from a PCIe gen 4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive though and there are PCIe gen 4 x8 controller chips in the works.
Such exquisite taste!
Thanks dad.
Wtf

Things I love about Quinn:
He's clearly very enthusiastic about Apple products, but he's not afraid to point its flaws, and he dives deep!
Yeah, it's nice to see an Apple fan not be a fanboy. They do some things well, but they aren't close to perfect.
@@LegoRobotLover Uhmmm what?
And for that reason next to the hackintosh builds he's the only apple/mac centric youtuber/news source i follow
He's the Linus of Apple, except not as shilly.

Quinn in 2019: buys 10000$+ Mac pro
Also quinn: markets LTT merch
Getting sponsorship for linus to get back that 10000$ and the cost of that usb 3.0 pcie card paper weight.
13:10 "They don't even have linux drivers"
I would like to hear this complaint more often, from a lot more people.
Most drivers are built into the kernel. Unless it's a Nvidia GPU there's a good chance it just works without hunting for drivers.
@@ethanl9656 I daily drive manjaro kde, and I had to dig through the repo or go to manufacturer's website for drivers more often than you think (even with manjaro's outstanding hardware support), many devices still require proprietary drivers.
But yeah, having the generic drivers built into the kernel is a blessing since I ditched windows a few years ago.

Creative was always about bad driver support.....
Why soundcards need drivers? not well developed!

Finally, a Mac that's just a big Hackintosh with unnecessary security chips.
Sadly the t2 is there. "Protecting" the ssds...
At least you could actually install MacOS onto another SSD and run it off that. The T2 chip can't do shit about that as the drive doesn't use it as its controller.
Shut the muggy off
@@DedMaximChannel the t2 chip is there to protect apple, not the user

Segue. Segway is the dumb vehicle lmao
Meh, Linus' are meant to be punny (which kinda implies intentionally awkward) more than smoothy

Be careful about that ssd tip-- Apple will figure this out and lock the SSD via an update to the T2 lol
They would love to, but... they can't.
I know you're joking, but that will never happen. You've been able to do that on Macs for the longest.
and I am just here waiting for the case to be locked into the T2. Only Genuises will be the go to then.

Thanks for this video very useful information. Regarding the Nvidia card. Does this mean that I could use the Nvidia cards to render my 3D graphics using Parallels? Would I be taking a massive hit in terms of performance because it would be using a virtual machine?
Seeing you buy a Mac Pro means I sit through all the ads now. Those machines aren’t cheap.
I think he's sponsored, so I doubt he's paying 100% of the cost of the mac pro

"U.2 can get it to work over a standard PCI-e interface" nicely done.
Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin I really hope this was on purpose
I love how you go into details in your reviews. One of the best reviewers out there. Keep it up!
Loved the video. Specially the ending "the Mac Pro is cool because is a PC".
Do you run into any issues with the T2 chip by booting to the installed internal NVMe since the t2 is directly linked to the Apple installed SSD?
I think in this case the SSD won't pass through the T2 since the PCIe lanes are not passing through it. Only the lanes for the. Apple SSD's are being forwarded through the T2. Otherwise they would have broken compatibility with other devices, the T2 would've also slowed the communication with GPU's and etc.
I don't think so, it's like any other drive to be honest. Because you can also put in hdd's to expand your storage, the NVMe will work the same way :-)
@@DBLCreations but he is talking about booting from samsung ssd, not if you can expand storage
@@xSh0uTx They installed OSX and booted from NVME in the video.
I think when working with encrypted filesystems you run into issues... Because T2 is a lot of security checks and co-processing.... pure speculation.

Great video. Answers a ton of my questions on Mac Pro cards and various interfaces.
THANK YOU so much for testing the blackmagic decklink card. I use decklinks all the time, and I was waiting to see if it was supported on the new mac pro
Great vid, appreciate all the time organizing all the hardware and shooting it in a concise format.
Wait. That Mac Pro has an SSD that is slower than a Samsung EVOPlus?
thats apple for you
Typical Apple
Yes it's lowest end and smallest SSD is slower
Yes because it's not in raid 0 like the rest of them and when the raid crash you lose everything yeah!

Great review... best on I have seen.... showing everything broken down in your previous vid and then seeing you try common PCI stuff was excellent! If you veer get the chance to try more than one nvidia card inside running on bootcamp I'd be thrilled to know. Thanks... new to channel and enjoy your style!
Quinn, this was an excellent video. 17 minutes I won't regret spending on UA-cam, thanks for the hard work!
That USB 3.0 Card is the same one I use in my 3,1 Mac Pro.
He said it was a 3.1 gen 2 usb expansion card lol. He was close, only about 5 GBPS off haha.
btw just to clarify apple will include a w5700x soon as stated on the mac pro page

What makes nvme drives unreliable?
Your workload has to be matched properly
If you write petabytes a day.
He didn’t say that. They’re just not as reliable as U.2 drives.
U.2 drives are aimed at enterprise users who plan on writing lots of data. Basically you get better quality flash that can withstand more write cycles and you get more spare space for wear leveling purpose but you pay a lot more for the drives (when new).
Andrew Lane but there are pro level nvme drives like the 970 Pro as well

Nice video :) - thanks
Two tips:
PCIe to SATA power adapters are available for little money. So it is not necessary to buy the expensive adapters of the future. This would make the USB 3 card possible.
To pass the sound card (or other PCIe devices) to the virtualized environment, it needs PCI passthrough.
Professional virtualization solutions have mastered this for several years. The prerequisite is that it is active in uEFI.
I apologize for my English.
