  • Welcome to our first time watching as we react to Cloverfield (2008).
Man what an insane rollercoaster this was. It had so many elements we absolutely loved. From the suspenseful storytelling, intense action sequences, and finally the mystery surrounding the monstrous creature wreaking havoc on New York City this movie had us engaged throughout! Including that juicy gossip about Travis in the beginning!
Directed by Matt Reeves and produced by J.J. Abrams, "Cloverfield" follows a group of friends as they document their attempt to survive amidst a catastrophic attack by a towering creature.
This movie was exactly what we were asking for a few weeks back when we wondered if there was a movie out there that took the Kaiju genre into the found footage style. And this was it! Everything we were hoping for this movie absolutely delivered.
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we delve into the film's potential impact on the kaiju genre, how filming it in the found footage technique might've enhanced our viewing experience and how the film toys around with tension and horror flawlessly.

Very true. I saw it in the theater in NY and there were a lot of people just shocked and upset. Some of the footage hit too close to home so soon for many at that time. I actually didn’t like this movie for that reason. However, watching it years later, being further removed from 9/11, I have an improved impression of this film.

    • @torontomame

A couple who are friends of mine were longtime New Yorks before they moved here to Toronto a few years after 9-11. One of them worked at a law firm in Brooklyn and went home.to their place (in Brooklyn) as soon as the attacks happened. (Even here in Toronto everyone was sent home from the office because, as one of the bosses said, no one was gonna pay any attention to work that day, not even himself.) His partner worked for a tech firm in downtown Manhattan and they had a meeting scheduled that morning with a client who was headquartered in the World Trade Ctr. As it happened he'd been undergoing radiation treatment for a type of cancer and his boss told him he was too sick to attend the meeting and that he didn't have to go. Sadly, his coworkers who did go died in the collapse. Fortunately, before the attacks happened he'd told his partner that he wasn't feeling well, that he didn't have to go to the meeting, and that he'd try to get off work early. So at least his partner knew he wasn't in the buildings as he'd been scheduled to be. But with all cell service down he didn't hear anything for hours til his partner made it home on foot. Turns out he was part of the multitude of dust-covered people crossing the Brooklyn Bridge on foot that day.
So when I watched this in theaters I thought "OMG, how do the people who lived through 9-11 feel watching this??" Talk about PTSD-inducing. 😱

HUD’s name was referring to “Heads up Display”. T.J. Miller, the actor who plays HUD has spoken about the filming. There were a few scenes where they needed a professional camera man to step in (time constraints) but he shot over half of the film on a Panasonic AG-HSC1U, which is a handheld camcorder. Truly fits in one palm. They decided to let him do this to make it feel more real- and it worked.

Tied in with the viral marketing for the movie too pointing to satellite issues for the company Slusho that Rob was going to Japan to work for, implying the creature did come from space or was awoken by whatever was on the satellite when it crashed into the ocean.

    • @user-xx7kl7sr6i
      @user-xx7kl7sr6i Місяць тому

@@joshluke5782 The creature created a weird flavour thing that was mined from the ocean depths were it was sleeping, the satellite ends up being the final nail in the coffin and it poked it too hard for unknown reasons and then it travels all the way up to NYC.
The creature itself is not native to Earth, or not to that Earth, the cloverfield paradox confirms the creature is from a parallel Earth, this one is a baby so there's reason to believe it arrived alone from other Earth when the cloverfield paradox plot advanced, didn't even notice it had completely shifted universes because it was sleeping underground the ocean floor and Slusho by accident founds the substance and mines it, slowly but surely disturbing the creature, the last straw was the satellite crash, whatever signal it was sending disturbed the creature and it finally went into "waking up" mode, then it fully wakes, destroys the Slusho mining platform that looks like an Oil platform, rampages through the sea floor and kills a few boats while going haywire on the sea and finally arrives at NYC coast, were it goes fully confused as the land from this Earth doesn't resemble its natural habitat at all. And because the creature evolved to sustain absurd pressure from the sea floor and from the sky when a fully grown adult, most of the conventional weaponry couldn't really poke it.
It is confirmed in the first movie by the director that the baby creature was indeed killed, they didn't use a nuke but rather a special bunker buster tactic that the US actually has but so far hasn't used or never used. Extremely heavy and penetrating ordinance carped bombing a large area, anything in that killzone has almost zero chance of survival. We can see a variation of these tactics in Shin Godzilla when they use the penetrating ordinance against Godzilla. A being whose body was practically nuke insulant elements. And it managed to penetrate it. Now imagina what it did to this thing that has zero caparace.

Huh, before this I'd always heard that the story revealed through all the "augmented reality game" gimmick marketing leading up to the movie's release had been about a hibernating creature on the sea floor with some company using a fake oil rig as a cover for their operation harvesting the creature's bodily fluids (or was it from the parasites?) and mixing it into a popular slushee drink. With the end of that story being the fallen satellite rousing it from its sleep.
I know the other movies are all their own standalone things in separate corners of the multiverse, but didn't they tie into that same story with little details in the others? Like wasn't John Goodman's character in Cloverfield Lane a former employee of the company that quit because of weird shady **** he witnessed them doing?
And the alien theme is Cloverfield Lane's thing while Cloverfield Paradox goes more in the direction of the monsters being demons. I don't think they're all meant to have the same type of back story.
Wait a second, that director's quote that was mentioned doesn't say that the monster came from space, it says that a meteor came down.

    Nice!
This movie is GODZILLA meets The Blair Witch Project.
The idea of the movie came from JJ Abrams, who was in Japan and saw all these Godzilla toys and thought "What if we did our own Godzilla, but with a handheld camera and you're right there in the middle of this insane action sequence?"
The creature, nicknamed Clover, is actually a juvenile, standing 250 ft tall, while the adults are 700-800 ft in height.
Abrams said that he wanted the creature to be a stranger in a strange land and that it's in an unknown environment that it's not familiar with, which is one of the reasons why the military wants it destroyed.
He even compared the creature to elephants going on a rampage, and even though they are gentle giants, they can attack you without warning, as well as trying to defend itself.

When I first watched this, I genuinely wondered: "Did I put the right film on?", subsequently forgot because I was really enjoying this found footage romance drama, and then got smacked in the face when the movie decided to remind me what I was actually watching. xD

LOVE this film and have seen it multiple times. A few things on this film:
The creatures that fell off of the monster were parasites unique to the monster.
Rob becomes so single-mindedly obsessed with finding Beth because of his brother. The last words Jason tells him before everything goes sideways is that since Rob clearly loves Beth, Rob needs to be with her regardless of what it may cost him, though at that point Jason is talking about Rob's new job in Japan. The next thing the group knows Manhatten is under siege by a kaiju and Jason dies trying to cross the Brooklyn Bridge and Rob very quickly realizes he cannot lose Beth too.
In the scene on the ferris wheel towards the end you can *juuuuusst* make out something rocketing out of the sky and crashing into the water. Given that it occurs several weeks before the attack on Manhattan a lot of fans speculated that it was an alien egg containing the monster. The director would later say that the monster in this film is only an infant, and essentially rampaging because it is unaware of itself and the world around it so it seems to confirm the egg theory. If I remember right Abrams later said that it was a piece of a satellite breaking up and crashing into the ocean, but the egg explanation is much more interesting.
Fun fact: at the very end of the credits (it is a bit difficult to hear) you can just catch a faint whisper saying "help us". I think the voice sounds a bit closer to Beth's so at the very least she may have survived the bombing, and the camera definitely does as the film opens noting that the footge you're about to see is of the NY "incident" and was found in what used to be Central Park. When the film came out on DVD fans went over a LOT of it and someone had the idea to play the end credits whisper backwards. If you listen to THAT recording online you can make out a man saying "...it's still alive."
It is referred to as the "Cloverfield" incident because that is the name of the area of Central Park where the camera was found.

In one of the first trailers, you can hear Hud say "I saw it, it's alive, it's huge!" Well, a ton of people online were convinced they heard "I saw it, it's a lion, it's huge!" and that led to a widespread theory that this was going to be a live action Voltron movie. YES! So happy you guys listened to our comments!
Remember, this film was released not 6 years after 9/11, so some of the images of NY being attacked added an additional layer of evocation. I liken this film to what Godzilla was for Japan in the wake of the atomic bomb. Kind of a cathartic way of dealing with that trauma through pop culture and art.
The viral marketing campaign for this movie was INCREDIBLE. The original trailer, which only showed the first attack during the party, was released in theaters without even giving away the title, only the date! Audiences were left wondering what the heck they just saw. It was so cryptic, up to the release, with the promo website looking like a site dedicated to Rob's Japanese company. There were clues and more found footage released to the site, that even led followers to another site to find Easter Eggs, that were eventually tucked into the film. This movie was produced by JJ Abrams at the height of his success with the TV show 'LOST' and he used a lot of those speculation invoking techniques in marketing this movie. Dig into the marketing campaign if you want some fun research.

    1) So at the end scene with Coney Island it’s hard to spot but if you look at the sky right as you hear the beep, you can see a satellite crash into the Earth. People first thought it was the creature landing from space, but the lore is that a satellite was observing the creature which was living in the ocean, sleeping. When the satellite crashed it woke it up.
    2) Also just a scary insight, that monster was its baby form.
    3) those little creatures weren’t its babies, they were a parasite that fed on the monsters blood. If they bite you, you explode a few minutes after.
    4) It’s said that the monster wasn’t doing this on purpose, most of the destruction was due to it being confused and frightened due to the explosions and loud noises.

So in the DVD extras one of the behind the camera folks mentioned that the monster is actually supposed to be an infant. When I learn this it made me look at the movie in a whole new light. A baby waking up in a strange place lashing out and crying seemed to give the creature some depth

I liked the subversion of the hero trope in this movie, in that Jason was the obvious leader of the group: smart, forceful, decisive. You'd normally expect him to be the main protagonist. Then he's unexpectedly killed off in Act 2, and Rob "the douchebag" has to take the lead role, which he plainly isn't cut out for.

In the last scene when there on the Ferris wheel you can see a splash on the distance of the ocean, it's when the creature made touchdown. That's probably why the military confiscated the footage because they wanted to know how it got here.

This is not only my favorite found-footage film, but one of my favorite films ever. I remember watching Transformers in theaters back in 2007 when this trailer was first released. We talked about what this film was gonna be instead of the movie we just watched lol, because they didn't give us title or anything....just a release date. Also, this film had the best marketing campaign of all time, which I'm sure you've both heard of by now. I watch it at least once a year. It's that good! I'm a new subscriber. This movie has a special place in my heart because I was the same age as a lot of the cast, living in a cool loft in New York, and saw this solo on a quiet day in Manhattan in a nearly empty theater. Kaiju aside, kind of a time capsule of that time of my life.

10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox continue this universe albeit in very different ways. 10 Cloverfield Lane was first supposed to be an original movie but then got aquired by Bad Robot and reshoots reworked into a Cloverfield Universe movie. It is directed by PREY-director Dan Trachtenberg
The Cloverfield Paradox is completely different AGAIN from the other two, being a big Sci-Fi Thriller, kinda of bookending the other two films by acting as the origin and ending-story of the trilogy.

Forever grateful I am to Reeves for allowing me and others like me to revisit this titanic moment in time. Helped in therapy to be able to identify new/old things and work through them. I learned for me that there is no such thing as closure and became acquainted with resolve and resolution for moving on from trauma. Bloody good film. Bloody good reaction. Cheers!

That kinda hard to notice thing you see fall drop in the ocean is believed to be part of the trilogy where it's falling from multiple dimensions as part of Cloverfield Lane and I forget the other movie but I've seen all 3 and connected them
...but to me really really really it's not a trilogy it's a well brilliant connected five part franchise that as a fan you really really have to open your eyes and connect them look at the news feed on each movie the scientist in them the minor characters or extra backgrounds characters and products placements in all five movies connect them all. It's brilliant in my opinion but you gotta see all five each has eerie endings and I like Paradox ending cause it send chills when we see what we see.
To me this is the order of the five Overlord was originally suppose to be called Cloverfield Overlord
Check all five movies but everyone knows of these series one of them explains what happened that these creatures appeared but I won't spoil which one
    Cloverfield
    Cloverfield Paradox
    Cloverfield Lane
    Life 2017
    Overlord (Nazi-movie)
Oh and you didn't watch the end credits distinctive on this one Cloverfield where it kinda hints they were both still alive in the tunnel you can hear her say "it's still alive"

Fun fact though; there *is* a godzilla found footage, only it's an ARG video and quite short.
The Cloverfield series is actually really good, too. There was a massive viral ad campaign when the movie originally came out and the hidden backstory of the creature and the general lore is amazing.
The TLDR of it is that a Japanese/American oil company drilled deep into the earth and harvested a sort of smile that is addictive to humans and was added to "Slusho" drinks. This slime was basically part of the species that the monster is, afectionatly called "Clover". Oh, and the kicker? This Clover is a baby.

    Two things:
    1) The teaser trailer for this was FANTASTIC! And it didn't even reveal the title, just the opening date. So you would have to come home from the theatre and Google your way to what movie it was.
    Which brings me to
    2) At the quiet parts, you could seriously hear a pin drop in that movie theatre. I don't think people were even breathing!!
