  • We took a tour of ODNR's Castalia Fish Hatchery near Lake Erie to learn about how fish are raised and stocked into Ohio waterways. Castalia State Fish Hatchery is located on 90 acres in western Erie County, just southwest of Sandusky, Ohio. This facility is the newest of the six state fish hatcheries and came on-line in the fall of 1997, after it was purchased from private interests. The hatchery production facilities consist of 70 indoor rearing troughs, one covered outdoor raceway building, and three outdoor raceways. The indoor troughs and covered raceways are supplied with water from one of the area’s many blue-hole aquifers (2,500 gallons per minute capacity). The remaining outdoor raceways are supplied with water diverted from Cold Creek (10,000 gallons per minute capacity). This cold-water supply allows the hatchery to raise steelhead and rainbow trout. All of the state’s steelhead production occurs at this hatchery. Rainbow trout are raised to catchable size before being stocked in Ohio lakes and Cold Creek.
Capt. Ross Robertson has made his complete living chasing walleye as a full time professional angler for more than 20 years. Through the years he has worn many hats including time as a fishing guide, boat salesman, TV host, outdoor writer, product designer, tournament fisherman, speaker, radio host and podcaster to name a few.
Ross fishes ice-out to ice-up on the Great Lakes. He spends the majority of the year walleye fishing on Lake Erie’s Western and Central basins.

I've fished across the street at Resthaven wildlife area for 40 yrs. now . Be nice if they could bring some more northern pike back instead of all trout . Pike are cold water as well .

I’ve been fortunate to have fished there twice in the last 4 years. My wife was drawn in the lottery the 2nd year she entered, and my son was drawn this past year ( his first time entering the lottery). Each time we had 4 people limit out in less than an hour. Excellent opportunity that the ODNR provides. My son and I just stopped by there last Friday to feed the fish near the entrance on our way back home from a charter trip.

Big water…do you read comments? I’m in Tennessee, home of the world record walleye…I’m an eye nut in the land of bass. If for any reason you would want to learn how walleye bite topwaters I can educate. My problem is once they leave the shallows after the alewives spawn they disappear. Where do they go? Don’t believe me. UA-cam search walleye channel or topwater walleye.
