- Have you wanted to attend a tour of the nation’s largest and most sustainable sport fish hatchery, the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery (WJHSFH), located in Anchorage, Alaska? If so, this video is for you!
Join hatchery staff as we highlight the 6 major fish rearing areas within the hatchery, and tell you about the advanced fish life support systems in the facility that allow for production of over 4 million fish per year to support sport fish enhancement throughout the state.
Note that multiple spawning techniques are used to get eggs from fish. Rainbow trout and Arctic char are "air spawned", which you'll see in the video. These species can spawn multiple times in their lives! Salmon, like the Chinook and coho, only spawn once and die. For those species, we humanely dispatch the fish prior to removing eggs. You'll see this in the short clip with us "cut spawning" the Chinook salmon. All salmon carcasses are then donated to help feed animals at multiple locations (read more about it here: www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?...)

Thanks for the awesome tour! My four-year-old watched it along with me, we had to pause it every two minutes so that he would take another bite of his dinner which he didn’t want to eat. It was interesting enough that he is now almost done with his dinner… You have accomplished a miracle! He wants to come and see it in person now!

How does the egger work. We always massage em out, are you guys using pressurized air or is that water. (The needle devise to strip eggs)
Couldn't that 25% of waste water could be used for agricultural? Fish waste water would be great to sell . Great stuff ,and very informational.
Hi Steven! Many folks have brought this up to us, and we agree- the fish waste would make amazing fertilizer! Right now, it goes outside to a settling pond. We don't have the means to separate the fish waste from the water on site, so it would take having a facility put in to do so.

How are you handling the fish leukemia that has developed in salmon?
Do you medicate fish in a separate set-up? Because sanitizer and antibiotics can kill the nitrifying bacteria.

why do they put rainbow and salmon in the same stream when the rainbow eat the salmon fingerlings?
Hi Jim. We do put rainbow trout and salmon smolt in Campbell Creek in Anchorage. With the salmon smolt stocking program, those smolt are usually in the stream for around 5 days before outmigrating to the ocean, so predation from rainbows on salmon isn't high. We also stock those fish in 2 different locations on the creek.

It definitely isn't cheap to run a facility of this size. Although it costs between 2-3 million dollars per year, the revenues generated from the stocking programs carried out through this facility are estimated at 20 million dollars per year :)
