- Raising trout at the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Tonto Hatchery is a year round job. Here's a look at what it takes to bring rainbow trout to the angling public.

True story..
I had a friend who worked at this hatchery...maybe 20 - 25 years ago...
His job was to feed the fingerlings...
This meant he had to walk around the perimeter of the ponds draining food out of a 50 lb bag...
Being a lazy sod he came up with the bright idea of using an old hand bell he'd found in an antique shop in Scottsdale.
He leaned over and rang the bell close to the surface of the water...
Of course fish can't hear but they can feel the vibrations from the sound waves...
The fish quickly learned to associate the sound waves with food and they came running - swimming - over to where he was...
When the tank truck would suck the fingerlings up to take them off to a lake, my friend asked the driver where he was taking them...
A couple months later my friend would take his boat out, with a fishing rod of course - and the bell...
He'd ring the bell close to the water and always catch his limit...
This is a true story...you can look it up...
cool

I remember my last neighbor had a salmon hatchery in his garage. I don’t think it was legal, but it was cool nonetheless.
Daamn rich ppl always trying to take everything.
Wow! Legal and garage fish industry.
The licence is $10 a year of its to study them.. I think $100-$300 to farm food for human consumption.
@@touluevang3471 What does being rich have to do with it lol
Does that mean he was growing Salmon to full size on his property? What would he do with the salmon hatchlings?
Im 47 years old my father took me to a place like this when i was 6 i remember it like it was yesterday. Gave me new respect for fishing
Huge respect to these guys and their organization. This would be an awesome job
Thanks so much!
Thanks to Americans and Canadians for the their dedications to life itself
I live in Washington state, I'm now 68 years old. I remember back when I was a kid and just got my drivers license me and my friends would go to the local trout hatchery in late summer and catch grasshoppers and throw them into the pens, what great fun that was, they were like piranha going after them. These days the pens all have netting over them, but I remember those fun days.
All those eggs lookin like that scene from Nemo.
I appreciate these men and women who provided the opportunity for the rest of us to escape to the outdoors
Ok UA-cam,
I'll watch it
This comment makes me happy.
Kai Grote ah thx
@@imacoolkid721 bruh this vid was in my recommended for a solid 2 weeks. I couldn't watch a video without this one being recommended
When I was a kid about 17 years ago, I've been to this very hatchery when I use to go camping up around that area. Those tanks they kept those fish in is something I'll always hold as cherished memories of my youth, even caught some of them rainbow trout in many lakes. Ponds and streams. Thanks for sharing the video.
Much appreciation for the efforts of Game and Fish people.
when i was younger, i used canned corn to fish for trout. they love it because thats what they feed them at the hatchery and they remember it.
Wow that was really cool. No politics, no nonsense.. just a neat video. I like it
Yeah, I wouldn’t expect politics in a hatchery video too.
Wow the fish eggs survive the mail kicking and throwing the eggs.
Interesting video 👍🏻 it’s like breeding brine shrimp
Get Off Your Bass And Lets Fish yeah watching them throw around eggs like that was kind of triggering for me
They have a higher durability than other fish
Yeee
My son Thor caught a trout for me on Mother's Day; I cooked it up it was so good, I'd forgotten how good! Now I'm obsessed 😉 Thanks for the great video!
Smoked with beer and a cigar and am at home even in Gander Newfoundland. Love the wild in America!
Once every year I get this recommended to me, it’s always awesome to watch
Been to the Tonto hatchery with the kids and now the grandkids, it's definitely worth the trip to go see. First went there myself when I was 10 years old and never forgot the experience.
Hunters and fisherman are the greatest force behind conservation. If it wasn't for them, programs like this would not exist.
This is an awesome video brother, always wanted to see how they do it in the hatcheries and thanks to you I did. Awesomeness.
I want to say that it was a great video! Also Thank you to all the hard workers who provide us with these great fish to fish for in these lakes!! You guys are awesome!!!
Thank you for keeping these awesome rainbow trout and keeping them going thanks for your hard work
Great job guys, keep up the good work, love those fish.

GREAT POST!!!! WHAT GREAT CARE FOR THE PROCESS OF KEEPING THESE FISH INTO THE LAKES AND STREAMS!!! AWESOME!!
WOW...great vid, thanks for sharing!!!
My father was a member of a rod & gun club when I was growing up, and they had their own private lake that they stocked with rainbow trout that they raised on their property. From what I remember they had 3 separate "pools" with thousands of fish in each. They would stock them in the lake once they got big enough, which was usually around 8-10 inches I think. I remember going with him every week to feed them. The food looked like little brown pebbles and you'd take a bucket full of it and just hurl it into their pool and they'd go nuts, it'd be like a feeding frenzy. Just like what they showed towards the end of the video at 6:20. Same thing we did really. Was pretty cool and it's the first thing I thought of when I came across this video.
ehhh ehh ehhhh he said Rod. ehhh ehh ehhhhh
now watching rest if my mind is right your doing an incredible job
I've been going to the hatchery by airplane flatts since I was 8. Now I'm 24 and I take my kids there. Its Awesome. Although its sad the big pond is empty and it looks kinda run down. Last 3 times I went never saw a single other person or family. I dont think they know they can go walk around.
i go Turkey hunting out there almost every year...its beautiful one time i was fishing an the top of the spring by the Hatchery an game an fish dumped a big ice chest of trout right in front of me an sead good luck lol.. but the mountain are beautiful i recommend visiting it if you haven't yet
This is amazing, thank you for sharing this video. This looks like a career I’d definitely enjoy!
Thanks for sharing the great video and you are doing a fine job to help nature and fish sustainability. Time to cook.
IAmaPersion wow indeed. The biggest culprit is mining, our obsession with gold has killed so many creeks in Colorado. My solution would be total human anahilation, allá Noah(nothing new) what’s yours? Communist pipeline dreams? Love to hear it
I can really appreciate your guys' passion and willingness to help make this informative video.
Great job folks!!!! Touches the lives of so many too!!!!
Checking out some of your older videos!
That's cool. Thank you for keeping trout populations stable.
Thank You Game in Fish, and Tonto Fish Hatchery! I fish the Rim a lot especially East Verde River.. AZ overall has a Awesome Stocking Program, much better then other states I lived in... I sincerely appreciate it!
Very cool! If I ever visited Arizona again this would be great to visit but I guess doesn't have visitors..
Well that was awesome!! I love going to the hatchery here in Colorado. I showed the hatchery in Leadville in one of my Trip videos on my UA-cam channel called Just what i do
Thank You guy's for what you do.
SIMPLY INCREDIBLE HATS OFF TO THESE GUYS
Wild trout will always be the best
I visited this hatchery years ago. Is amazing.
That is awesome. We don't have trout in Mississippi, but a fish truck comes through to our local Co-Op's once a month with catfish, bream, Florida hybrid bass, minnows, grass carp, crappie. I think they come from Arkansas. I have made two dynamite bass and bream lakes. It's fast and easy. I've enjoyed years of joy on my lakes for about $300.
Omg @Arizonagfishandgame I went there in 5th grade witch was 2 years ago and it was amazing! I went to manzanita Elementary school
Keep doing what your doing coz its just a pure awesomeness
Good job guys ! I live in Colorado and that's how it's done ! All you experts making negative comments need to study trout.
Trout generally don't reproduce and must be reintroduced into the streams and lakes. Only sad part is they are super easy to catch.
Don't know how ma nature didn't slap you upside the head. Trout don't reproduce? Don't lie anymore! If humans quit interfering with the natural world you wouldn't have any diseased or gaps where fish no longer swim and reproduce. Dams? Irrigation? Pollution? Overfishing? C'mon now.
thank you, very interesting! greetings from Switzerland.
So cool, thanks for providing to nature!
I was a lone worker at a hatchery in Ontario. Great experience right down to the trough cleaning.lmao
awesome video thumbs up ...!!!

RUDY MIRANDA you need a license to fish?
Whoa what a regulation
Thank you For stalking or Lakes and screen Without you we all would have nothing To catch Thank you again
3 years old. Recommended now. Great there UA-cam.
This is my idea of a dream job. I'd love to work here!
thats a cool job to have, nice work hatching them out
What a job. I'd love this
Wow Ennius Montana I lived really close to that I loved that fish hatchery my dad worked there
So cool, our licensing helps to support this!
That's cool . I'd love to go to the hatchery
Wow! I didn't realize that people put the trout into those streams... I thought they were regular fish that were born and lived in the rivers.
Then again, I'm from Colorado, so maybe the process is different since the video mentioned they can spawn in clear perennial streams.
Heck of a job guys. Keep up the good work
Great content..... Keep up the great work....
This is so cool, I had no idea this was done
I remember a mom and pop real hatchery. one day they said they had to close, that the government would be taking over and shutting down all the smaller hatchery for that state I was raised in. the boss told me this would be the beginning of the end for most return dish to the pnw, years later, I now understand what he ment. I wish I could have done more to help.
I just learned a lot thank you
Great job keep them coming
AMazing and nice video ✌🏻💕
Thanks
Thank you for your service.
Hey! I'm glad your comment section isn't locked!
Isn’t it just amazing to see us as a species having progressed from apes to being able to control the nature for our benefit??
T H don’t know about you but I was not an ape 🦧 hmmmmm I take it your Atheist
Great job guys. Good video
You guys do important work 👍
Didn't see when you guys start training them to eat power bait......
Cody Chamberlain lol
I actually catch wild trout on powerbait so...
They did every time they drop food from top it plops and they associate that with feeding time the power bait ball and weight plop and they come to investigate powerbait also uses ingredients similar to hatchery feed formula
secondstate fishing “wild trout” are normally stocked
MO Fishing Hey pal 🙋👍my local river has true wild browns, sea trout and grayling, would any of them take any of the power baitsThanks in advance ✌👍💙🎣 From Scotland 🙋
Love this guy has no idea how to do it, n acts like he is the boss

When I was in 2nd grade My whole class raised hundreds of trouts 40 survived and we let them back to a river
Wait really?.... how?
Amazing. I have yet to catch my first trout
