    Wilma is looking so game and so much bolder. Once she figures it out, you all will be insane. She's stunning in the dressage and has come so far, especially since you said you don't work on it as much as you need to. This is definitely one of your best dressage tests and eventing rounds with her despite the spook.

  • @LindaBell-444
    @LindaBell-444 Місяць тому +50

    The changes in Wilma are so apparent, she has gone from a very looky, spooky hesitant ride to a strong, bold and fast ride! Now it’s just finding the gears in between! You two have come SO far this season and you should be very proud 🎉❤

  • @jenniferquinn5010

    What a good dressage result. Her frame is coming along nicely. I like the fact that you realised you needed to work her up into your hand and not wiggle her down. Self awareness is so difficult to achieve and you are so on track. As you said it is practice and more practice. Shame about the step back but she still stepped forward and jumped it well, another improvement from the start of the season. I love the little jabs about being a brat, I so love your sense of humour and the banter you share with everyone, please never feel pressured to change.

    This may sound counter intuitive, Meg, but have you thought about trying a milder bit over the show jumps? That new bit may be too harsh for her, which will cause her to panic a bit. I had a horse who tended to go full tilt at his fences. A milder bit with drop noseband worked well. (I used a hollowmouth eggbutt - nothing fancy). Just a suggestion. Every horse is different. I also found, with him, that leaving him alone and just giving a check a few strides before the fence helped, too. Cross country was a different story altogether. Trot the first fence, bolt until a tricky fence, then behave! LOL

    • @bernster123
      @bernster123 Місяць тому +9

      Yeah I was thinking not to go stronger with the bit as she seems to react to it too much. More halting through the body and less with the hand? Easier said than done though I realise that !

    • @DeborahHamilton-q1w
      @DeborahHamilton-q1w Місяць тому

      @@bernster123 That's how I had to ride my horse. Seat, not hand. Someone in his past had sliced his tongue about halfway through when tying it down to stop him getting it over the bit. He was afraid of his mouth. When I tried him before buying, I didn't know that, though. When I tried him, he was in a rubber pelham with a long shank. No metal in the rubber mouthpiece - flexible. I had issues with that long a shank on the pelham - kept unintentionally shortening that rein. I was told he went in a plain snaffle, so tried that instead. First week I had him, he bolted in the back field - tongue over the bit (terrifying ride: he was faster than the Thoroughbred I had had, and leaned way over on the corners!). Hence the switch to the fat snaffle and drop noseband. Never any problems after that. Cross country I used a short shank mullen mouth pelham, and he was good in that.

    • @aevans3327
      @aevans3327 Місяць тому +3

      Agreed. Wilma's response is a fairly classic response to a gag. Unbalanced rushing when the bit asks for an inverted frame and backing right off when the gag starts to get strong.

  • @evelynjellema9827

    Great, she's now starting to take you to the fence which is what you wanted. And this round is so much more out of stride and flowing. She's all there and simply needs miles on the clock and not worrying about. She's green and she's learning. Once You are ready to taken on the 90 and 100 with here you will really begin to see what she is made of.

    As a fence judge, I would have given you the 20. She saw the fence (and maybe the water) and took steps back. It was a refusal to go forward to the question. She’ll get there and will sail through it all soon enough! You’re still forming a partnership and she’s still learning!

Of course we wanted to win & took competitions seriously but it was so fun & our Club & team was all about learning & experience. One of my favorite memories was sitting in lawn chairs by the trailer listening to the radio & Bohemian Rhapsody played & we all new the lyrics, sang, head banged & decided to enter a Jumper class just for fun. We ended up 2, 5, & 6 out of 21! Ha! Thank you Queen. ❤️

    How times have changed, no neck straps in my time, we just grabbed the mane. I look how long people have their strap and wonder how you stay on, so in my mind it is just a security blanket. Having said that, we never worried about falling off because we were allowed to get back on and continue, so staying on wasn't a priority for us. Lol😂

      I’m in the U.S., and show in both the hunters and the show jumpers. Our nationally rated shows are usually 5 days long, and we have several classes a day. The hunters have to stay braided (similar to your plaits, but smaller and tighter), and most of us use professional braiders bc our smaller braids mean there are like 20 to do down the neck, and then the tail. Pricey and super time-consuming to have them all redone EVERY day, so we try to preserve them with hoods and tail wraps when we can. Obviously if it’s a million degrees, we don’t want to overheat the horses by making them wear hoods (even thought they’re just thin Lycra), so we have to pay for braids every day. 🤑 Competing,especially at the nationally rated level, is SUPER expensive here! Also, having a grey horse is a NIGHTMARE! After his purple shampoo bath and being braided, My grey hunter used to wear a full Lycra bodysuit with full-faced hood, with stable blanket in winter , and no-bow quilts and standing wraps on all four legs. And STILL manage to get manure stains!!! HOW??? Thank goodness for Magic Cowboy spray green spot remover!!!

    So this might be a controversial topic and no one wanna talk about it. But ive thought about this for a while and feel like it has to be said. Weight - ive followed you since you where still in college and youve commented on it a few times that youve gained weight and such. And maybe so, but you actually look bagning, and you look healthy! A was personally a bit worried about how slim you where at some point. Youve grown up and our body changes when that happens. Just remember that! You are beautiful inside and out. Xo

    • @margauxnodvin7478
      @margauxnodvin7478 Місяць тому

      @@melissax3144I think that was a very complimentary comment! There is SO much fat-shaming in ALL disciplines of riding and competing, I think it’s nice for someone to point out that Meg shouldn’t stress about saying she’s gained weight, and that she looks healthy and fit! Also nice of the commenter to acknowledge that we all come in different shapes and sizes! As long as we are following the 15% (or max 20%) weight rule, where we as riders, along with our tack, only weigh 15% or less of our FIT horses’ weights, then it’s not hurting the horse if a bigger rider is on a taller, larger bodied but fit horse who can carry a heavier rider without undue effort or any pain. I get teased for not getting on anything under 17.2 h that is a fit, younger adult horse. But I take my horses’ health and comfort seriously. So I have to use a tall mounting block for my short legs and arthritic knees; at least I know I’m not hurting my horse in any way. Even when I was much thinner, I still preferred larger horses. That’s just what I grew up riding, and I feel more confident on a big horse. The jumps look much smaller on a tall horse! 😂😂😂

    Gags are a poor bit.
    They give a head up, head down signal simultaneously.
    I’ve seen endurance horses bolt out of the starting line due to being frustrated at the mixed signals being given from the riders hands. It’s not worth risking your, your horses or someone else’s life because of a bit.

    I think you did a great job. Wilma will be extraordinary. Just take it easy and enjoy. I'm glad the dressage changed because I did think she did a nice job. Bummer about the rail. I do think you are right about the fences. These were just too small for her in SJ. She was running and flattening out over the jump. Cross country was spooky to me. Wilma was enthusiastic and looking at the positives is what you need to do. But you are human so you can be a little grumpy.long.!

    they say horses force you to reflect and grow in yourself - this mare is forcing you to not be dependent on your hands as a child might a pony club. You have had this message drilled at you from multiple top riders over the passed few videos and lessons "start using your legs and weight aids to indicate a speed/quality change" - you need to generate a sense of urgency now to make sure that is how you are riding and training "perfectly" - the bit is just a band-aid for "bad" riding...something to consider going forward 🌟you are both perfectly capable of riding off the seat and leg and using the hands as a jaw relaxer and controller of the shoulders. It is perfectly possible even if she is becoming more bold in her confidence. Evolve or die (as David Goggin's would say). You need to snap out of this "hands for handbrake" immaturity in your riding. Wilma demands it 😇😅

      Hobbit is Megan’s mom, her real name is Janette and I believe she got the nickname Hobbit because she is short

    If Wilma hadn't stepped back, I doubt you have been given the 20 penalties at the water. Wilma stopped and then stepped back, and that's what got you the 20 penalties. Which is a bugger, as she was looking really good up to that point.
