    I am like 5 years in to growing tomatoes and it is true that the color tells you the flavor. I love Sungold cherry, Black krim, Cherokee purple, and Beefsteaks.

    I have also let my Sun Gold cherry tomatoes come back year after year, but I don't think they are exactly the same. They are bigger, paler, and taste even more amazing than the original plants.

    Hi. Let me write a few comments:
    1. Tomatoes near the wall are not ventilated, so they are affected by the fungus cladosporium. Moreover, the tomatoes near the wall are mainly affected. Cladosporium does not affect fruits, but reduces the yield and can cause pneumomycosis in humans. In addition, the wall heats up in the sun and burns tomatoes. That's why you have a burnt tomato.
    2. There is bare ground under tomatoes. When you mow the lawn, throw the mown grass on the tomato bed. This is the best fertilizer. Tomatoes will be 2 times larger and more productive.
    3. Vertex rot is caused not only by insufficient watering and lack of calcium, but also by a lack of boron.
    In general, it's nice to see the video of an American who grows not San Marzano and Amish pasta, but also delicious tomatoes. It is only surprising that you, knowing about Brad Gates and the Wild Boar Farm in California, do not grow Brad's atomic grapes, atomic Sunset, Brad's Black Heart, Barry's crazy cherries, and so on. Pay attention to cherry tomatoes Geranium Kiss and Kosula 14 Megagron. Have a good gardening and great harvests.

    hey bro I learned that the family with with Black Beauty, Blue Beauty and Blue Berries ect. will produce the dark blues and purples to areas of the tomato the sun hits. So near the ripening stage defoliate your plant for more sun coverage on the tomatoes.

    I like these reviews ! Because I dont know much about heirlooms ! Ive just purchased my first heirlooms and currently growing GoldMedal Sudduth's Strain Pink Giant Syrian and Black Mountain Pink. They are my first ever try beefstake heirlooms,before that I grew some italiam heirloom that was tiny like a cherry.

    Some varieties do better in different zones. Brandywine was bad last year, maybe I will try again. I wish there was a zone map for tomato flavor and production. Rain water is so much better than tap water as well. Growing heirlooms is quite a challenge. Thanks for your video. I am in North GA 7B. Plant late April/ frost in mid October. ( in my area)
    I bought a variety of seeds last year after studying people’s most delicious choices. I grew 9 varieties based on flavor and hedged my bet with determinates that are disease resistant hybrids. I am growing these all organic without any bug poison. And mostly indirect fertilizers.
    So I made an indoor grow light setup and started growing the seeds in those red plastic cups. Worked very well using a cheap electric blanket. This was first week of March and cold.
    Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Carbon, Paul Robeson, Steak Sandwich, Abe Lincoln are my heirlooms. Bella Rosa and Red Snapper are my determinates. I also bought 3 Big Boy from Costco that were slightly ahead of my seedlings. I have 40 plants in raised beds along with a few vegetables. The tomatoes were planted in Mid April but it was a barely warm enough. Today at the end of May everything is thriving and vigorous. I have loads of green tomatoes everywhere. One bed of 8 is all Cherokee Purples. 4 from Ohio and 4 from Gaia. Doing well. The Black Krim is a majestic plant but slow to produce fruit. Paul Robeson took the longest to germinate its seeds, 19 days! Also a majestic plant but slow to produce fruit. Abe Lincoln is very stumpy and muscular. Carbon started slow but has caught up with most of the others. I am using the “Florida weave” to support everything this year. Works very well, better than string trellis and clips. Search UA-cam if you never heard of it. It’s great. I have high hopes for my heirloom indeterminates and we shall see. The Bella Rosa and Red Snapper are from Hoss as was Black Krim. They are very vigorous but slow on the flowering. Big Boy is ahead of everything but it was store bought.
    I am very curious as to which one will taste the best. It gets really hot in Georgia in the Summer and we may get too much rain, like last year. Next year I will buy 2 rain barrels and only use those to water my plants. Also start the seeds earlier in February. You can get obsessed doing this tomato thing. Cheers.

    I've grown just about every heirloom variety available over the last 30 years, and consistently the best flavor and texture is the Cherokee Purple. Black Krim and Paul Robeson are close, but still not better than the CP.

    I transplanted a pink brandywine and growing 3 black crimson from seeds. It’s my year gardening!! Can’t believe I chose the two best beef steak tomatoes. I’m really picky when it comes to tomatoes and I hope I can celebrate my first season with amazing tomatoes:) that for the taste test and review!!

    I think where you grow them makes a difference. Jaune Flamme, every year, is my best tomato. I am on Eastern Shore, Maryland, zone 7b.

    Flamme is an orange tomato. One of my faves. Creamy texture. I grow it every year. I’m also a fan of Blondkopfchen.

    I grew a sweet millions hybrid cherry tomato this year... amazing so far compared to "patio" cherry tomato. Can't wait to grow heirlooms next year.

    You should space your tomatoes! Yours are way too crowded. You will have more yields and less problems

    The Cherokee Purple has a cult like following but jeez, there are so many great tasting tomatoes beginning with any Brandywine, Red. Pink or Yellow. The Brandywine Yellow , Platfoot Strain is slightly sweeter with huge fruit
    that is smooth and survives the tuff years like last years floods . Of the 50 plants and six varietys I grew last year the yellow Brandywine was my lone tomatoe that was etabke.
    In my experience planting heirlooms close together and starting seedlings early makes plants more susceptible to problems, Early blight being the most often of the problem,

      This year, spray your plants with a hydrogen peroxide and water solution.
      You honestly won't believe how well it combats blight!
      I had a pink Brandywine that was severely blighted, and after spraying it for 10 days, it came back healthier than it ever was.
      I also highly recommend Trifecta fertilizer.

      @@RossRaddi I'm in East central Ohio and grew the Soldacki last year along with 13 other varieties including Pink Brandywine. Soldacki was my favorite and the Brandywine and Cherokee purple were a close second.

    I lover some of the tomatoes you tasted and I'd like to add Japanese Black Trifele as a tomato you should try in future seasons. I love the taste and texture and they produce very well in the Chicago area.

    I had a black tomato years ago that tasted like liquid tomato paste. It was the most intensely flavored tomato I’ve had in my life and I’ve been trying to find something like that ever since.
    I’m trying Paul Robeson and Black Sea Man next year, maybe Trifele (I think that’s what it is called). They were recommended.

    Your description of Brandywine is true to me. I always cut one on the plate to catch all the wonderful juice and then devour it like a fruit.

    For paste tomatoes, try Rocky. Very big and very good tasting. Agree that Brandywine tastes great, but the yield is poor. Cherokee purple is probably my favorite, but I’m trying Black krim this year. I’m also growing Virginia sweets in place of Persimon, which is a great tomato. Soldaki is another tomato that can stand toe to toe with brandywine. For cherry tomatoes, I love sugary. Wish I had more space and hope I’m not sorry for not growing cherokee

    Hybrids suck completely. pink Brandywine and black krim are the two best you showed. impossible to say which is better. I've also gotten some amazing results from procreating sun sugar seeds, and it really can get massive and super long under prime conditions. give a few a massively sunny spot and like a 10 foot pole and watch it take off. fertilize extremely heavily with high nitrogen fresh/hot manure (plants cannot overdose on N only NaCl over saturation root osmotic balance disruption which tomatoes are relatively tolerant of salinitywise). brad gates stuff from my experience was pretty and flavorless, including the one you grew. you should let your plants sucker and your grow area get denser, you could have a much higher yield. if you like sun sugar or yellow cherries, try growing Striped Marvel, a large mottled yellow and orange beefsteak that has been grown by the Zapotec Indians in Mexico continuously for maybe millennia (not recorded info that I know of). amazing beefsteak. from my experience, the best beefsteaks are pink Brandywine, Cherokee purple, black krim, and Striped Marvel of course innumerable examples not included. Yoder's German yellow is also phenomenal, and there are so many others that none of us here has grown yet. this year I am trying yellow Galapagos cherries, which are apparently fantastic, possibly better than sun gold, and are apparently extremely scrappy vines that grow to the salt water edge in nature and are eaten by the sea iguanas. I will be growing them on the edge of an estuary so they will have high salinity exposure (makes the organic sodium level of the fruit go out of control) and attempting to get them to self seed outdoors in zone 7 and in an unheated greenhouse which is effectively zone 8. Oh, for a supposedly fantastic yellow beefsteak, trying Pineapple this year. apparently "A Gourmet Treat!" according to baker creek and if you want to grow some other great black tomatoes, "black cherry" and "black pear" are extremely good as well. a lot of commercial heirloom tomato growers grow black pear because it is a huge, long term yielder and it also takes up extra space for it's weight in a box. black cherry is a huge taste test winner from personal experience.

    Nice reviews of some interesting tomatoes. I'm always looking for new varieties that are well loved. I love Blondköpfchen. It's amongst my favorites. Up there is also a chocolate tomato called Beduin. I've been growing both for close to a decade. I also really like Black from Tula, Black Sea Man, Ananas Noir, and Long Tom (a paste). This year I'm trying some dwarf ones.

    Both of my green toms died last year...
    But sungolds just explode. Everyday. Tomatoes. Two years now, once they start it's over. I tried to tie it up this year to control it, nope, already taller than me, too tall for the pole and it's still bushed out everywhere. I counted 150 tomatoes set one day, gave up counting near the end 'cuz who cares. Tomatoes everywhere.
    Dragonfruit, hibiscus, passionfruit and tomatoes are all taller than I am after a few months. Ice cream banana is above my waist. Cool, my first day in middle school didn't make me feel short enough

    I dont know if you are still having the tomatoes 🍅 in that corner but heres a shortcut to health: compost (Johnson Su style the better) squeezed in rested water or unchlorinated to begin with plus a cup of blended fish or oats and olives oil for food for the compost life, sprayed (specially under the leaves 🍃) covering over 70% of the plant at the very least will hugely benefit the growth, yields and most of all health of your little plants.
    Also removing the grass at the bottom increases yields, because plants spontaneously growing on the feet 🦶 of crops do such a high impact i didnt know, so if you give it a try just let me know how it goes for ya. May God guide you, always!

    i am also growing green doctors frosted. i wasn't impressed either. the doctors has very little acid flavor. doctors really needs to ripen fully before it becomes good. many tomato reviews recommend certain tomatoes that are just sweet. i have been very disappointed in following other peoples top tomato recommendations. they have been just sweet tomato flavors with little complexity. honeydrop is another one, its a larger cherry that has some honey flavor but little to no acid. it tastes more fruity when picked fully ripe. not bad but i like a sweet flavor with acid. just like figs i think we need to put tomatoes in flavor groups. there are plenty of sweet tomatoes out there that miss the mark for me.

      btw there are two doctors cherry tomatoes. just "green doctors" and "green doctors frosted". they say frosted is supposed to be the sweeter version.

      update on HONEYDROP. i would recommend this variety even though it lacks that acid punch. the sweetness is very different than other tomatoes. it maybe higher in a different type of sugar. really has a honey like flavor. this one hangs on the vine really long and resists cracking unlike sungold. you can let this one stay on the vine and form a liquid like center. at this point it has that slip skin grape effect as well. the seed pocket has very few seeds and looks unlike any ive seen. my honeydrop is yellow. apparently this one isnt a stable variety and has some pink princess off-types.. Fedco rated this one better than Blondkopchen, Dr. Carolyn, Isis Candy, Lemondrop and Weissbehart. i haven't grown all these to compare myself. i wanted to update this post because above it felt like i stated honeydrop wasn't worth growing. it is in the top 3 for sweetness. very productive with average to good disease resistance. im starting a log of my growing experience with tomatoes to help me sort out this mess. ive had a lot of poor quality heirlooms over the years. there is this view that since its an heirloom it must taste good.

      There are indicators of color. Green Zebra turns yellow at the top.

    I totally agree..Pink Brandywine is the best tasting tomato I've ever tasted. It's just too bad they don't produce very well here in south central Texas.

      I'm in north central Texas and my blooms always fall off my pink Brandywines. Maybe I need to get them out very early and cover them during frost so they can set their blooms before the heat sets in. Super Sweet 100 and Black Krim are my best tasting this year. They're both better than my Cherokee Purple and the others I planted.

    I never saw an heirloom tomato and not at my super mkt Publix. With co-vid 19, I am becoming more involved healthy foods as am isolated at home . i am not a junk food person but want to become educated aa ro the healthiest out there. Thanks for the education. Will be subscribing.

    I'm a little surprised you have your tomatoes growing against the house as they are one of the most sun hungry vegetables you can grow .. I grow nothing but heirloom variety's .. I grow NO hybrids .. My Toms get at least 8 hrs a day of pure sun they are in the open with just open field around them .when I see cracked tomatoes I know they are stressed either not enough water or calcium starved I'm really surprised you didn't grow the Cherokee purple or Carbon black heirloom toms as they are the oldest in the northeast ...They are hands down the finest tasting meatiest toms I've ever eaten.

    6a Mid Ohio I'm getting my largest of the season at Frost every year.
    4 weeks before frost I'm doing
    " Late pruning " our favorite Midnight Snack is request by nearly everyone who been given any and also I've gifted seedlings seems everyone most requested by neighbors returning after tasting them..
    Paste tomatoes should be tested after they influence the product such as salsa and tomato sauce.
    Black Brandywine for steak burger and my favorite my wife's Black Krim for she eating in sandwich and bowl by itself.
    I found Sun Gold just sweet prefer Honey Comb Gold as second only to " Midnight Snack. I've raised 40 types in last 4 season Definitely Midnight Snack rules for taste in our circle.
    They are about 1.5 inches half black and a ruby color when fully ripped you want to get your lips around as you bite as extra juicy.
    Orange tomato for trying on ketchup.
    Of 24 varieties a few years ago Black Beauty was definitely our worst just something weird undesirable to us but pretty to grow.
    Thourburg Terracotta is delicious as itself and for Central America dishes my neighbor from Central dishes she claims best for her cooking.
    I did overcooked a steak burger with a Thourburg Terracotta and it made that overcooked steak burger juicy and delicious as my wife was complaining about her's and with her favorite Black Krim.
    I love them Black Brandywine first place for slicers on my sandwich.
    Black Krim will be the last tomato I'm raising for I'm getting to old for Big garden and Black Krim is the best plants for early tasty and productive until frost.
    Definitely depends on how a tomato is served and in different dishes they do vary so picking just one is not advised
