- Ubuntu is a popular user friendly linux distro but how friendly will it be once Diana tries to destroy it? Don't try this at home otherwise the Zombie Cat from 2102 may come for you...
OSFirstTimer Advanced ditches the original 5 basic tasks and introduces a new random advanced task each episode. The task can involve literally anything from video editing to 3d modeling to programming and even attempting to destroy an operating system.
Random tasks using random software in random operating systems from random time periods... now this will be a lot more interesting! Don't worry though as we may occasionally go back to our roots and do a few "original series" episodes.
I hope you guys enjoy this episode and look forward to "Can Diana Animate?" next time on OSFirstTimer Advanced ;)

Those of us who are actual fans of this channel completely understand that you and Diana have lives, jobs, stress and a family to take care of, as do many of us. "Zombies are DEAD processes. They can not be 'kill' (You cannot kill the DEAD). All processes eventually die, and when they do they become zombies. They consume almost no resources, which is to be expected because they are dead! The reason for zombies is so the zombie's parent (process) can retrieve the zombie's exit status and resource usage statistics. The parent signals the operating system that it no longer needs the zombie by using one of the wait() system calls.When a process dies, its child processes all become children of process number 1, which is the init process. Init is ``always'' waiting for children to die, so that they don't remain as zombies.If you have zombie processes it means those zombies have not been waited for by their parent (look at PPID displayed by ps -l). You have three choices: Fix the parent process (make it wait); kill the parent; or live with it. Remember that living with it is not so hard because zombies take up little more than one extra line in the output of ps.Zombies can be identified in the output from the Unix ps command by the presence of a "Z" in the STAT column. Zombies that exist for more than a short period of time typically indicate a bug in the parent program. As with other leaks, the presence of a few zombies isn't worrisome in itself, but may indicate a problem that would grow serious under heavier loads.To remove zombies from a system, the SIGCHLD signal can be sent to the parent manually, using the kill command. If the parent process still refuses to reap the zombie, the next step would be to remove the parent process. When a process loses its parent, init becomes its new parent. Init periodically executes the wait system call to reap any zombies with init as parent.There are also orphan processes which are a computer process whose parent process has finished or terminated.A process can become orphaned during remote invocation when the client process crashes after making a request of the server.Orphans waste server resources and can potentially leave a server in trouble (This is the biggest resource difference between zombies and orphans (Except if you see some orphan zombie movie). However there are several solutions to the orphan process problem:Extermination is the most commonly used technique; in this case the orphan process is killed.Reincarnation is a technique in which machines periodically try to locate the parents of any remote computations; at which point orphaned processes are killed.Expiration is a technique where each process is allotted a certain amount of time to finish before being killed. If need be a process may "ask" for more time to finish before the allotted time expires.A process can also be orphaned running on the same machine as its parent process. In a UNIX-like operating system any orphaned process will be immediately adopted by the special "init" system process. This operation is called re-parenting and occurs automatically. Even though technically the process has the "init" process as its parent, it is still called an orphan process since the process which originally created it no longer exists."

OSFirstTimer I have had a few of those nasty ones... tried to fix it... and failed.
Zombies are DEAD processes. They cannot be terminated manually. All processes eventually die, and when they do they become zombies. Zombie Prosesses consume next to no power, prosessing and RAM, which is to be expected
because they are dead.

One thing I've noticed and I find it annoying is that people only post comments to be outright insulting / disrespectful towards Philip and his mother.......Seriously, some of you have sunk lower than the titanic but this behaviour is normal on UA-cam.
I find a lot of these videos interesting, especially seeing various operating systems demonstrated in detail without someone trying to sell you something.

The moral of the story here is that logic always prevails. If you explicitly tell software to delete files and it bakes you a quiche instead then it would be difficult to depend on that software.
@ 25:02 "The thing that shuts it down" is probably not gone. At this point you should be able to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to get back to the graphical logon, or Ctrl+Alt+F1 to log in to a full screen terminal and "shutdown -r now" or just repeat the Ctrl+Alt+Del to get lock, log off, restart, shut down etc. options she had before.
Why not _try_ some of those, and see what's left?
P.S. I think the quickest method, of straight up killing it would be "sudo echo . > /etc/fstab && shutdown -r now", with the major advantage that rebuilding the file system mount list should be relatively trivial from a boot stick / CD, and nothing else about the system has been damaged. :\

As for a non-experienced user, this lady has a pretty nice intuition for where to look for potential damage vectors and she can explore the options pretty well. She's a real hacker. I liked her train of thoughts, especially when she had that idea to start killing the processes or slowing them down.

It isn't that Windows is more popular, but that it just isn't that easy to penetrate Unix/Linux based systems.
+Roland Taylor (RolandiXor) Exacly. Popularity means nothing to security. If that were the case, Facebook/Google/Twitter servers would be hacked since they all use Linux.

Btw if right used Windows also could be nearly inpenetratable(If thats a Word). Just the default settings are for easy installing.
You can higher the security just by adding user permission between admin and standard users.
and after that you just use a user that have permssion to add new programs but not being able to change windows files. (There are some issue for example the search options thing need a long time and also sometimes cant find the right files.

I destroyed Ubuntu 20.10 which is much newer. It crashed and black screened, then I got the "Entering Grub boot rescue" mode. I completely wrecked it. (This was in a VM by the way)

There is a very good way of destroying Ubuntu or other Unix-based operating systems via Terminal. A fork bomb will consume all system resources until it crashes, thus destroying it partially because it will crash. But it will re-boot, but there are several other terminal commands to format a hard drive, which technically will get rid of the OS.

lol watching a son torture his mom with software is oddly somewhat enjoyable. She is such a good sport.
You know, it can be done in five minutes or less if you have the right skills.
1) Open terminal
2) cd to /boot or /etc
3) "sudo nano" or "sudo vi" each file
3a) alter the file contents
3b) save the broken file
4) reboot.
The story about the zombie file: cat, Here it is: The cat file is unstoppabe beacuse it's a system file that will keep the Ubuntu 15.04 working. Then it was "Running" to "Zombie". So thats the story and the cat file cant be killed
