    Neutron 4 is great for non-beginners too! Especially those of us who are doing all the composing, producing, recording, and mixing in a small home studio. I, for one, would rather spend time composing and recording my tunes; and less time bogged down in mixing with a pile of plugins. That's where Neutron 4 is saving me a ton of time and wheel spinning. Your video is helpful in learning a good workflow for using it efficiently. Thanks!

      You're totally right! Neutron 4 is a professional-grade mixing suite, it's seriously amazing. I use it for the exact reason that you do. I don't have the time to really dig into mixing, and honestly that's ok for my needs. But then again, even if I did specialize in mixing I would probably be using Neutron 4 in some way.
      Anyways, glad you're loving Neutron 4, and it brings me so much joy to know that this video could help! Thanks for watching!

      Yeah I'm tempted. I've been mixing in proper studios since the tape days, but I've got a serious issue with nasty standing wave bass mud in my home studio that means I'm just not getting mixes I can trust, even with the Yamaha N10s. Cos if you cant hear it well, it doesnt matter how "golden" your ears are, its gonna be munted. So as my Dad (whos both a pro audio engineer and a pilot) would put it, sometimes ya gotta fly by the dials and learn to trust the meters. This has been particular relevant to the old boy who *still* can pull off a mean mastering job despite needing hearing aids in his old age, because he's a master of reading 'the dials' and knowing that he might not hear those high ends anymore, but that graph is showing him exactly what they are doing. I dont have the old boys chops, but maybe this AI stuff can rescue my mixes without having to book time in a better room for final mixes.

    Thanks. I'm not a beginner but I don't really like mixing. And even though other musicians say that I'm actually good at it, I still have the feeling that I don't know what I'm really doing. I love composing, arranging and sound design but the tweaking afterwards is often too much. I guess that this might help me.

      I'm coming from a similar place. My favorite part of the process is composing and arranging. So when it comes time ti mixing I want to get it done as quickly and easily as possible. Probably not the best attitude, but Neutron 4 certainly helps me get by.
      Based off where you're coming from, I think Neutron 4 could be useful for you so you can get back to composing and arranging.

    This is great! Your explanation and demonstration is phenomenal. I've been trying to decide if Neutron 4 is something I need or could use, and your video here is the first one that has provided the insights I need to make that decision. Last year I upgraded to Ozone 9 advanced and really like it and am using it, but wasn't sure how Neutron 4 fits into everything. Now I see, and feel as though I can make an intelligent decision here, especially since I can get it for $149 on my account. Hard to pass up if I think it is something I will use and benefit from on a regular basis like I have experienced with Ozone 9.

    This vid is very helpful, thank you! Great simple explanation of the features. I have a question about the unmasking feature. In your example, you used it to give a better separation of the bass & kick drum. When you decide on the changes it made for you, does it save those changes to the individual tracks? In your example, does it apply the changes to both the bass track & drum track & save it in each channel’s setting?

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  2 роки тому +2

      That's a good question, thanks for asking.
      Let's say you have a vocal and guitar track and the guitar is getting in the way of the vocals. You would place Unmask on the audio that you want to get out of the way, in this case the guitar. You do not need to place Unmask on the vocal, since you are going to route a sidechain signal from the vocal into the guitar.
      Once you do that, Unmask will do most of it for you, and it's a dynamic process meaning, that Unmask will always be reacting to whatever is on the vocal or guitar track.
      Hopefully that helps!

    Clear and simply focused approach... I like it. IMO, Soothe 2 being sort of expensive, but I do own Smart EQ3, which covers what Soothe does, as well as a lot more. Where I find myself getting lost is in if I am going to use Neutron or Smart EQ3, using both gets a bit CPU intensive. I also use both Ozone 9 and Smart Limit in my mastering chain... I love them both. Nectar is so great with vocals!

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah that's pretty much what happens.
      If you plan on automating volume than go ahead and use some kind of stock gain/volume plugin. For levels that are static, that's where you'd use Relay or Neutron and not worry about the levels in your DAW.
      It takes a little getting used to but it works wonders.

    Good Video. I have a number of Izotope plugins, and am now starting to see some overlaps between them. I already have Neutron 3 Standard, so why would I need to upgrade to 4, when I also have Ozone 10 Advanced, as well as RX 10. Also have Nectar 3 Elements. Thanks. It appeared you also did your demo's in solo mode.

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching! Based off what you already have, there's little reason for you to upgrade to 4. Neutron 3 Standard is pretty great already. Neutron 4 mainly has an updated workflow, the Unmask Module (however you can unmask in neutron 3, it's just a tad cumbersome), and a couple of other small upgrades. So if I were you, stick with Neutron 3.
      And yes I did do my demos in solo mode. In hindsight I wish I had done them in the context of the mix. Still learning how to do this UA-cam thing.

    Great video on a great product! I was wondering though if you wouldnt mind my asking if you would find it better to use it on each individual track or just toss it on the masterbus and click play? • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  3 дні тому +1

      Your music project sounds amazing.
      And I totally get the confusion. pretty much I like to put Neutron on instrument groups or my lead sounds. I don't put Neutron on one-shots, fxs, or elements that aren't essential. The biggest reason is to save on CPU usage and if you plan on using visual mixer, I like for visual mixer to analyze sounds that are heard throughout the track rather than something that just appears for a quick second. Hopefully this helps, and good luck on writing!

    Cool video. Quick question. If I buy Neutron 4, do I still need Nectar 4?

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  8 місяців тому

      That's a great question. I'll start by saying that the newest edition of Nectar is pretty great.
      If you record and work with vocals, then I would recommend Nectar 4. If you use loops and vocal samples, then you can do with just Neutron 4.
      The simplest way to explain both plugins is that Neutron 4 is a plugin that specializes in mixing and cleaning up all kinds of sound sources. Nectar 4 is specialized for only vocals, so it has some modules and capabilities that you won't find in Neutron.
      Once again, to comes down to whether you're someone who works a lot with vocals.

    The neutron 4 mothership goes on the Master and the Relays on each of the stems, correct? From there what would you suggest I do to sidechain my 808 bass to my kick, what neutron tool would I use in this case?

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  Рік тому +3

      Hey, those are some great questions.
      For your first question, if you're talking about using the visual mixer this is how I would go about it.
      You can place the Neutron 4 mothership on any track you want. However, a track does not need Neutron 4 to be analyzed by the Visual mixer. Instead you can use Relay. Relay is good to use on those tracks where you don't want to use Neutron, but want to have that track analyzed by visual mixer. Relay is pretty much a gain slider, with a couple of other features like low pass filter, and mono/stereo switch.
      On the Master is where you place Visual Mixer. you can then run the mix assistant in there to balance out the mix. Visual mixer will look for all the instances of Neutron 4 and Relay across your project, and balance amongst those. If you're still thinking about using Neutron on the Master, I'm sure you could do that, but I would recommend using Ozone from iZotope for the Master. It has tools specifically designed for mastering.
      For sidechaining 808 to a kick, I would use the unmask module if you want a transparent sidechain. If you want an obvious pumping sidechain, use Neutron Compressor. You can use the unmask module for the pumping too, but I think it works better with the compressor.
      Hope that all helps!

    I know people (especially professionals) keep saying that Izotope is cheating and I should get Fabfilters but I'm a composer, not a mixing engineer, I also don't have any acoustic treatment in my room so Izotope for me is easier and cheaper than having to pay 500$ for a mix.. I will probably pay a mixing engineer in the future when I actually make good money with music but for now, Izotope is perfect for me.. I know how to mix without it, I actually don't use the assistant, just on the mix bus and I'll do some tweaking

    • @ThisIsOnesto

I haven't seen it paired with ambient-type music, and I'm so unfamiliar with it that I'm unsure where to direct you! I'm sorry, I wish I could be more helpful.

    I like arrangement. Mixing and all the engineering stuff to me just seems time consuming and has such a steep learning curve and takes very little to mess up a song. I think I am more of a creator or an idea person vs an engineer. This sounds promising. I'm going to experiment with it. I hope it helps balances and carving out frequencies and non-essential data that is not allowing me to push maximizers and also allows me to get a more polished sound. Wish me luck!

      That’s exactly how I feel about mixing. It’s such an important part of the process but it’s such a beast. I wish I could learn everything I could about mixing, but I’m only human. I think you’ll find Neutron 4 is great at getting your mix to a good starting point. It’s not gonna be perfect, but it is gonna be close and sometimes “good enough”.
      Especially with Visual Mixer, I still use that all the time, even for small projects. It’s such a quick way to get a balanced mix.

    Hello. Super video. Two questions if I may. For visual mixer to work, does that mean all your channels must remain at volume 0 and centre? And do you need neutron on every channel within your track?

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  Рік тому

      Those are good questions. For visual mixer to work you're correct. You want your channels to be at 0 and centered. If you want to do some volume adjustments while you're composing, I like to use a Utility stock plugin that can adjust volume. I also use that Utility plugin for volume automation.
      And if you want visual mixer to find your channels you need to either upload Neutron or Relay (a utility plugin that comes with Neutron). I think it also picks up instances of Ozone too. If Neutron becomes too heavy of a plugin, then opt in with Relay since that's very light on CPU.

  • @Hanoveur
    @Hanoveur 11 місяців тому

    Do you use this for gain? Or do you apply gain after Neutron 4? Should we be setting the base volume for every track or let Neutron handle that?

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  11 місяців тому +1

      That's a good question!
      I'll use Neutron or Relay as my fader that remains static. Any gain plugin or tool that you plan on automating should be placed before Neutron.
      And I usually let Neutron set the base volume for the main elements. When it comes to one-shots, ear candy, or anything that just shows up once and goes away, I'll set the base volume my self.
      When I let Neutron/Visual Mixer take care of the main elements it usually does a great job.

      It is a bit of a clunky way to automix. I really hope that more DAWs just integrate the feature and get rid of that annoying step. The fortunate news is that it works and it's very light on the CPU.

      You don’t need to put Neutron on the master channel. However, you do want to put the Visual Mixer on the Master channel.

      That's a great question.
      I typically place Neutron on groups of instruments, or on my main sounds. That really helps limit how many instances of Neturon I use in a project.
      For one-shots or elements that aren't too essential, I won't place Neutron on it, or I might put Relay (free-plugin that comes with Neutron) so that it can get detected with Visual Mixer.

      That's a great question. Even though you don't have Neutron 4, a lot of what I share in this video should help you learn how to use Neutron 3.
      To answer your question, I'll tell you what I do. I like to use Neutron on my main tracks that I know are gonna be tricky to shape up. Usually that means, synths, piano, bass, strings, leads, and pads.
      I usually don't use Neutron on FX tracks, or random tracks with a sample here or there. I feel that it doesn't help much and ends up being unnecessary. I also use Neutron on instrument groups like guitars, or percussion (minus kick and snare, I like to process those separately).
      When placed on groups I'll sometimes try the presets before I try mix assistant. Especially when I feel like the group needs a lot of oomph, the presets can be kind of Effect-y.
