When I see all this kind of tools, I always think that they are sorta dangerous. I mean the beauty of working in tandem with an audio engineer is that the artist can talk about their art and their vison with an actual human being. I feel like companies are pushing individualism a little too far. Just a thought.

The same thing has been said when vst instruments came up. But, surprisingly, Studio musicians are still getting work. I think here the same will happen: those who could never access a few hundred or thousand dollar mix will use this and make better music. And those on a higher level will still go to the Pros. Keep in mind that a lot of what good engineers bring to the table is related to taste and creativity, instead of just technical skills

@@sean_wave yes I understand your point but I think the main user group for this stuff (as of now) are amateurs who would mix their own stuff either way.
I think what's dangerous is talking limits in the creative world. EVery too be it compressors, eq's, reverbs, distortion and on and on can ALL be "dangerous" if you don't know how to use them. This kind of tool is no different whatsoever imo. Music is by nature a creative and individualistic endeavor so how can companies can't push individualism farther creatives want to adopt. I think it's great.
For the triple threat musicians (producer, artist, engineer), this is a time saver.
This is great if you're engineering your own music... You can focus more on being an artist, than the engineer
Ive paid engineers to mix and master, takes a while to get the project finished. Costs a lot. Ive just downloaded this and Ozone, all i did was gain stage and i immediately did mix assistant and then master assistant on a track, sent it to multiple people and have been told it sounds very good, it actually sounded better than the engineers i use.
I've been doing it the old fashioned way for 20 years but this looks amazing. I hate mixing I just want my music to sound good.
My friend, they have a unmask tool that will solve almost every problem you've ever had trying to get instruments to play nice together. It will make your life so much easier so you can get your music to sound like how you want.

@@JamesMulvale Neutron 4 is the answer. I'm the same way. I just want to harness the power of mixing amd mastering to make my music sound good, without the 20 years of experience needed. But if you have that experience, even better
I agree completely. Used as a starting point for mixing, saves a lot of the boring grunt work yet allows the fine tuning which is the icing on the cake - just don't have to keep baking boring cakes! Ozone for the mastering process is the same. I'm on board!

I love this. For rough mixes, or maybe just for people who are doing videography and don't know much about audio mixing, this is a HUGE time saver.
Agree. People arguing this product puts mix engineers out of work are misunderstanding how many people out there wouldn’t be using a mix engineer in any case, or don’t have the budget/time to include a mix engineer in their workflow. ...Also, i’m a mix engineer and i haven’t found that access to this plugin has devalued what i do. People who want their audio to sound as good as possible for a release still understand that working with an engineer is going to be the best result. For video, or for demos etc, this plugin is a godsend.

Just got it through the update. I love it a lot already. For my uses this is truly useful and way more natural for me.
I think it's great for a quick mix reference so that you can focus more on the production stage
I use neutron the opposite way, it has great compression and eq, and unmasking features, and maybe occasionally I'll hit the assistant if I want a starting point.
That visual mixer looks great! I also immediately realised that it would be super easy to automate in Reaper. Very exciting stuff
Easy way to get a good starting point. Helped me a lot to get bigger and fuller sounds.
My problem with AI mix assistants is that I sometimes have to spend more time correcting the sound they create than if I just pulled up a chain of things I like and started from default. This has always kept me away from plugins like Neutron which is unfortunate because I think Izotope can make some good tools. I do however think these plugins have their place, and people get good results out of them. And I will give Izotope credit because i think for what it is they've designed it nicely.
@You Tube this. i always use their modules in their initialized state and do everything from scratch. if used this way, neutron and ozone are fantastic tools. i do agree that the AI creates more problems than it fixes.
Key word: SOMETIMES you have to. And agreed. There are times where the assistant is TOTALLY off base. But there are plenty of times it does present a helpful starting point. And either way, using with or without, they’re great.
I have to say, sometimes when I am with a client that wants something fast, I do use a bit of their AI stuff, so it being there is not a problem for me. 95% I go the manual route.
For now… A.Is will eventually create perfect competitive mixes
@You Tube that’s me with Ozone and Neutron. Ozone can suggest good things, but Neutron 3’s auto features were a disaster for me. Yet I still use both, Ozone every mix. The modules sound fantastic. The AI is a gimmick IMO

The Stem Position option looks great for both simplistic Pop arrangements and Orchestral ones. Like, you can actually place and arrange your instruments in the room like an actual orchestra without diddling with the initial plugin, that's nice. They had that feature in Nectar for vocal placement, glad that they expanded on it
I'm still stuck on the last build of Production Suite 3, def want to upgrade in the future for sure when I get the funds, they're doing amazing work with their assist tools to make processing less of a hassle

I think this is great! Music has a way of ratting out phonies, regardless of how it's derived. In the end, it still has to communicate something compelling enough, to where someone would actually consider paying for it. Hard to do, no matter the tools.

this will be awesome, really love nectar for vocals, use it everytime. Always want more sidechain tools and a good digital compressor can always be used to fall back on if i don't find a specific one for a specific task
Tools like this have an audience just like tools in a pro studio, you have to start somewhere and tools like Neutron can guide you until you get your reps up like going to the gym- at first no one is gonna lift heavy weights without a spotter until you become a pro, the spotter is still there but is standing there if you need assistance.
I personally love the mixing process - it’s fun, challenging, and intrinsically interesting. Plugins like this take all the fun out of it for me, regardless if it sounds good or not.
I agree, AI maybe on a technical level can be the best of the best but removes the human element or uniqueness for each mix.
yeah but instead of using it to do your mix, use it as a template to help get to your mix. lets face it, we all cycle through the presets list on plugins, looking for that head start

@@officialWWM that doesn't make sense, their compressors work like other compressors, for example. Attack, release. Imagers. Multiband processing. It's all there. In fact I've learned more about the signal chain process through Ozone and Neutron than I ever have before. It was like going to school by doing.
The thing that makes plugins like this great is the fact that companies innovate and try harder to make better plugins. Of course we will not use them all the time. Of course we wanna have fun and train our ears, that's what the process is all about! These kind of plugins won't take that away but it's essential to have them out there, some people won't be professional mixing engineers right away but plugins like this can give them a glimpse of the creative world of music. After all, we all have our individual ups and downs, the paths that lead us to create better products, better relationships and better life. Every plugin, every software and gear we use is experience that will stay with us forever, forming a better version of ourselves, ultimately leading to a fulfilling life, living the remaining days in a joyful state, satisfied of our choices and leaving a legacy that will change the world for the better. Neutron is my go to channel strip for TV and film post production. All the modules are very useful and surgical enough for dialog, music stems, sound effects, Foley, etc.
The low latency limiter in the output is a huge plus. I really have no use for the AI assistant, but on stubborn and dynamic dialog tracks the "sculptor" module works wonders without relying on a static eq curve that I may have to automate every other scene.
And again the magic it does to Voice Over tracks is just wonderful. Everything in moderation of course.
All my Neutron instances are set to enhance moderate but in very inteligible ways. Dialogue is king in TV, and smashing voices with a compressor is not my style of mixing, so Neutron has been wonderful for my taste.
Also when some of the music provided by a producer is rushed or badly mixed and an episode is due very soon again the sculpt, dynamic multi-band compression and transient designer on drum stems do wonders without the "over the top" smashing that Ozone might do in the wrong hands.
I can keep on singing its praises but that'll just be shilling for iZotope at this point (don't get me started on RX9 jejejej).

Great video! Just fyi, the Unmask module isn’t just a standard ducking process. The difference is quite dramatic: Tools like Trackspacer or Nectar simply inverts one signal and puts that on the destination (inverted). But neutrons unmask module analyzes the source signal and destination signal for actual colliding frequency energies. It’s working totally different.
I use the modules separately. My favorite is the dynamic EQ, if you use the unmask feature it highlights troublesome frequencies so easily (regardless of the side chain source). It speeds up my workflow immensely, specially when layering or working with 100+ tracks. In many ways I use AI like a preset that I will tweak further to my liking.
I love every step of the process and am not looking for shortcuts. With that said, without the AI thing, this is a pretty good product 😊😊😊
For spectral side chainimg and unmasking, Sonible Smart comp.does the same precise thing foe those of you who have it but didnt.know about this feature. When you engage it, it turns into sidechain plugin only, bypassing the compressor. Check it out!
It’s all about mindset. These type of tools, whilst dangerous to sonic quality in the wrong hands, are incredible applications in the right hands. They can never replace human skill, the companies themselves would be the first to say that. But they can hugely enhance existing skills if used correctly
I already use Neutron 3 which I'm becoming more and more enthousiastic about for the same reasons you mention. I like the adition of the masking module, the rest is only a slight improvement for me. The update to 4 is a bit too expensive right now. I'll wait till Black Friday ;)

@@NiharSavala Good question. You can use Neutron 3 for masking. It can couple tracks to see in the eq which frequencies are masking. But you have to set up a side chain with the dynamic eq yourself. No problem, the AI in Neutron 4 just makes it easier and quicker I guess.
EQ on this one is a go-to. Along with FabFilter Pro Q. Sometimes you need a dynamic EQ. I use dynamic EQ for a lot of things other people use sidechain compression for. Sidechained dynamic EQ is a heck of a lot more transparent for doing things like mild ducking of a bass part on kickdrum hits. I don’t understand why so many people use compression for that, unless of course the bass part needs more compression. Compression changes the character of the sound; if you just want ducking use an EQ or something like Track Spacer!
Watched your video, and then another video came up in my youtube feed about the Neutron 4 "I'll never mix without it again", praising how good it is an how many new features it has.
I don't know that dude, I don't know if he got paid for this by Izotope, but what I know is that I am very happy that in your videos, you share your honest opinion about a product.
For my part, I like Izotope, I think they do great stuff. And I think Neutron is great for beginners, or songwriters and producers, who don't wanna dive into mixing too much. I tested it once and it is just not my thing. I have my plugins, and know what they do, so I can achieve the sound I want.
That said, thanks for another great video! waiting for the next sandstorm to come ;-)
That seems really useful when trying to condense the mix process. Most of my arrangement is done before it gets to the mix. The same goes for most of the other features. I like that if you don't have the resources on your CPU, then this gives you the option where you would not have it. It's okay.
For the VR solutions there's dearVR Spatial Connect, which it looks pretty interesting I must say. Also, there's Space Controller by Sound Particles, which is not a VR controller but it is a bit of different approach on panning using your phone. But also these solutions seems to be more targeted to immersive productions.
Regarding the VR mixing, check Nuendo's VR mixing. You wear a headset, jump in the video & have controls inside of the simulation to do just that. It's more for object based mixing, but it's already here. :) Awesome channel as always!
Makes sense to incorporate visual logistics. If you can see and hear it without frequency knowledge on the dial...it certainly helps alot. I might try it. It sounds like it's pretty responsive.
For me personally I get about the same results in the same with the SmartEQ. But the exciter and distortion modules sounds very nice to me. And as you said easy to dial a sound in while producing. Will not use my money on this, but I don't think it's snake oil at all :)

The devices ca be used separately as well, not only as a channel strip (well, at least you could with neutron 3), and they are really great!
I’d like to add what I think to the many valid complains people have about plugins like this. Obviously, they sacrifice human decision making for the sake of a faster workflow, *but* I can see this plugin being a massive help when working super quickly in the studio. Sometime you need to just make a fast decision and move on to the next part. Later on you could obviously go back and customize your chain and parameters, but there’s value in tools that allow creativity to flow without having to fuss over technical details at the same time (especially for those who record themselves)
I have a version of this that’s one version older I believe? I’m sure for many new engineers it’s actually informative on developing sound and seeing with a brighter scope into mixing. That being said, I’m yet to really get a sound from the AI that I love on my mixes. I think it’s good.. but just doesn’t get me where I want to be personally… and maybe it’s more for a mix starting point than an easy button lol. I bought a bundle deal and got my version in a bundle and just test drive to see if I could make use of it. I’ve probably used it twice.
Pros, it’s definitely improved in this version. It’s got a lot of sensible things within it, and AI does give you a useful starting point to work off of. I also love that it actually bases it’s decisions of mix off YOUR mix rather than a preset that is a one size fits all type of deal. Presets are also good starting points, but I feel like this might be a little better in ways for how specific to what you’re sound is. I 100% agree with you on everything you said, the visual mixing layout is actually very interesting. I think a VR mixing setup would be fairly simple for a major company to develop if they really worked on it & heck yeah I’d love to try mixing that way!
you can do the masking if you have neutron for example on both kick and bass, use the masking option through the eq

5:06 I remember trying out the visual mixer a couple years back and while the interface was very interesting, the setup was annoying and very manual. It took a lot of time to add tracks. If you had many tracks it would get clunky fast, ate up time, and I found that it made keeping everything organized even more complicated.
for the visual mixer part, it would be really cool if instead of changing the volume of the tracks as you move along the Y axis, it instead keeps the volume the same but changes how close or distant the track sounds! Amateur mixers often don't realize that volume changes don't really create feelings of distance or proximity -- if you want something to sound far away, you roll off highs and add some reflections and maybe take off a bit of attack from the initial transient, and this is not something that a simple volume change can do.
That’s very true. Volume isn’t everything. Tone, reverb, panning, stereo spread… all of these things can work together to push, pull, and slide an element into a spot in the mix

You can already change the stereo width by dragging the edge of the bubble, and pulling it wider skinnier.
That has some effect on the perception of distance.
But as far as I'm aware, most distance/depth is done with delay/reverb and such.
That and things that are quieter are perceived as farther away.
So it would probably be a bit hard to put that on a slider, since the techniques to do such differ slightly depending on what instrument you're trying to achieve it on.

not snake oil :D As you mentioned the fact that you can use Neutron in EZ mode, or deep dive mode with a single click can't be stressed enough. Guitar/drum player here. I need something that will help me quickly get something listenable. Bob Ludwig is never going to be checking my tracks out so yeah, simple and fast, with the option to do a deep dive if/when I want/need to.
No snake oil… it’s not trying to say it’ll do everything for you on a grand scale and even when you know what you’re doing this can still be helpful if you not feeling confident about a direction and need some inspiration and by the sounds of it, after hearing many reviews now, it would be use for a time saver when things are requiring too much creativity… love the way the side chain works, but, would make sure I don’t over use this as completely ducking can leave more headroom for many other parts going on not just the things you’re side chaining… but, if there’s not too much other parts in a mix this would be lovely to use, possibly for live acoustic mixes also
I love the vr idea. Imagine that, can see it all around you and placing the sounds exactly were you want. Visualy aswell as hearing it. Would be like your inside your track with it. ,

I think I would still love more manual control over my mixes, but this is definitely a great tool to learn how to mix. it doesn't do all of the work for you, and it shows exactly how everything is being done

You can still adjust all module settings separately.
And you don't even need to use the mix assistant at all if you don't want to.
Neutron has pretty much any kind of plug-in tools you could need or want.
The mixing assistant is indeed a good learning tool.
And it can give you a good starting point, if you're not sure where to start on the track.
But you can tweak any of the settings you want, including rearranging the order of each plug-in in the chain or adding/removing them as you see fit
Not only that, instead of having to set up a parallel compression the old fashioned way, each plug-in has a mix slider that let you decide how much of the effect of that module is in the mix.
So like I said, what more control do you think that you need, that you can't already do with neutron?

what you are talking about at 4:00 - 5:00 is one of Soothe2's most powerful features, it does the same thing but with a crap load more precision and customisation. In my case I use vocals as a sidechain input on my synth bus so that my vocals always cut through the mix without damaging the rest of the sounds OR overly distorting the vocals which is something that is prevalent in a lot of dance music. Didn't mention before but I am a (mainly) house/techno and drum and bass producer!
And theres the cheap az , waves factory, Track Spacer. The Name says it all.
Yeah, honestly looking at this plugin i was mostly just thinking I'd rather have Soothe. If I had to choose between the two.
@@Rhythmattica I have both, I bought trackspacer first but it tonally alters what it's ducking because of the ridiculously large bandsize. I do like the plugin but my main issue with it is the attack and release controls on the back panel of trackspacer are too slow even at the fastest settings. Also soothe has so much more control over specific areas that need the processing. But that's just my opinion... It's probably my second best purchase when it comes to stuff I've gotten for my production lmao
@@regularjoe3547 I guess im just saying, as you did, its nothing new.. Trackspacers price though is a winner.. .. Not suggesting its better or worse.. But this whole Unmasking to me , is just a modern new term to what has always been what makes a great mix..I used to call it Clashing Freq's, as did many , decades ago.
I still hate the "Chasing the Plugin" mentality. Its an excuse to believe youve not failed, nor actually know what is actually happening under the hood.
Its like preset , loops chasing.
And thats something anyone can do. (except my dead dog.)
Most mixes are mastered these days in the mix stereo bus, Compression saturation multi band compression eq if needed, then all that needs to happen in the mastering process is light EQ and limiting.

I like Neutron to identify and solve problems, and then use other plugins to boost and sculpt the sound. Sometimes it works.
The Visual Mixer is there in Neutron 3. The Unmask too. Though less advanced
I was very hesitant to use izotoope when I first heard about it. One reason is that it sounded too good to be true. Another reason is that mixing was new to me. I was still learning how to use a DAW and how to use standard effects like EQ and compression. I was afraid that izotope would do all the work for me, and it would interfere with my learning.
I don't think it had a negative impact on me. First of all, I have ended up not using it often. The only reason is because I have other preferred plugins. So I definitely didn't become dependent on izoptope presets or the AI. To my surprise, I found izoptope most useful as a sort of utility for speeding up my workflow. And I don't mean that I allowed it to do the mixing for me. I just use it as a starting point. Sometimes, I end up removing the plugin completely once it gives me a few ideas about how to shape my tone.
Using relay and the visual mixer also ended up teaching me a lot about gain staging , panning, and creating space in my mix. Again, I don't just set it and forget it. I still use the faders and pan control in my DAW. Izotope give me a rough idea about what I should try to do to my audio.
Although I rarely have a need for these plugins now, I still always use many of the modules from RX whenever I edit audio. It is top notch and very easy to use. I especially love using de-click. It is so easy to use the plugin and can make a world of difference.
I have neutron 3. I don't think it's a bad product but never got around to make it part of my workflow 🤷.

Nice vid as always. I would love to hear your thoughts on the ControlHub by STL. It basically works with eq curves from other plugins and analog stuff to emulate sounds from famous mixing engineers. It has a free trial and it also has a potential to be snake oil, so your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Probably its like toontrack ezmix but with more tweakable parameter.
But aftet watching with the interview from Mark Lewis who is one of the engineer.
He said it's just a preset for his chain it's not one fit for all kind of stuff.

@@firmans12 they have their kemper-like matching technology called tracing. And then they put a channel strip on top. Ezmix is basically a bunch of tools pre-tweaked by a pro. The use is pretty similar, i agree, but the approach to capturing sound differs
I tried Neutron 3, was happy with it for a few months. Quickly grew past it though. It gave great results as long as I knew nothing about mixing, but as soon as I did start to delve into it, Neutron often did quite the opposite of what I'd have done myself. Quite often, Neutron on its own (or with the instrument specific shaper tools) would make the track sound worse, not better.
I did have it in rent-to-own and cancelled that, replaced Neutron with other tools on my tracks and mix bus. I'm glad I had it for a while, but I'm also glad I no longer have to use it.
Do you think that you can share the tools you replaced it with? I am in the mixing kindergarten ☺️
@@thamilanban The most important one is really FabFilter Pro-Q 3. That allows for dynamic EQ, sidechain if required, and lots of very detailed control. I also got the mäag EQ4 in a sale, which is great for EQing the highs (Luftikus is a free alternative), Slate Fresh Air for the highs too, and any Pultec (I use the PSP NobleQ), which is great for the lows, all with a bit of colour.
For most other processing, I have the Kilohearts subscription, which gives me so many tools like dynamics processing, nonlinear filters, distortions of different kinds, and all of that in the Mulitpass multiband environment that allows different handling of different frequencies. For more extreme distortion, I like Trash 2, which I got for free some time ago. For bus compression, I really like Cytomic Glue (the algorithm of which also comes with Live, but I don't use that any more).
If I want to go all out on a mix, I use PSP InfiniStrip, which gives me a variety of EQs, distortions, compressors, preamps, filters etc.
What's your experience in comparison to the sonible plugs? I love the smart plugs so I'm wondering if it's worth to spend money on neutron if I already have the sonible plugs.

While I like the idea that you can quickly mock up a rough idea of what the final mix will be with these types of plugins, I also foresee a wave of 'sound engineers', 'beat makers' and 'producers' coming up that have no idea why they have ears on the side of their heads.

I had the idea about 10 years ago to mix that way "visually".
But my idea was linked to eq, reverbs, delays etc. But, I couldn't find a computer whizz to do the software.
Using a Lewitt LCT 1040 for youtube videos is the epitome of an overkill :D

to me the basic of each sound I edit: iZotope. By the way sidechain is a huge capitel in Neutron; a huge miracleful theme. It depends on your ability to use it on advanced level.
There is an upgrade path, as I use v2. From v2 to v4 makes it just £118.
Let's make a thing so that new producers have no idea why the thing they're using works, but woah it makes a thing sound better. and that's all that matters.

Curious how well the Unmask feature works compared to say.. sidechaining an instance of soothe2 or Trackspacer.
took izotope a loooong time to figure that the distortion xy-pads in alloy were the best feature they ever made.

You can already graphically place instruments in a 3d space if you have Atmos tools. Cubase Pro 12 now has an Atmos mixing toolset.
This is not for 3D space....
Its basically related to only Volume and Pan Collective of all instruments, or busses in visual form... . as im aware.. I think you can also widen separately using the nodes on each side..
Simply, It allows the culmination of all tracks its been instanced on , to be seen in a single Mix interface.... Stereo

the problem I have with neutron (that you pointed out in a previous video actually); the assistant will always use a long chain of processing (sculptor; 2 compressors; eq; exciter); and you actually don't need this much processing for most tracks. Now I don't even really understand what a sculptor does; how am I supposed to start from there and tweak it? why do I need two compressors? It creates unnecessary problems while eating up your CPU and adding latency. Plus I compose electronic music and the needs are very different from recorded music; most of the time I need a small EQ and maybe a compressor (and even not always because you can tweak the dynamic at the source or use volume automations); why would I need all of this? I really dig ozone because I'm crap at mastering and the assistant offers me sort of a second pair of hears (and I mostly just leave it as it is); and often I'm on a tight schedule, but neutron is really overcomplicating everything; even if I could just start from scratch; but even for that I don't need this tool. lately I've been trying to use the least amount of processing and not put a compressor for the sake of it and I think that's the right approach (IMHO). still have a lot to learn of course.
Love Izotope. Neutron 4 is definitely not snake oil. Gives you, at the very least, a starting point to dive into. And it can deliver some really great sounding results without a whole lot of technical understanding. It's pretty genius if you ask me, but who am I. LOL!

I am an experienced mixing engineer and I still enjoy using Neutron. Having said that, I rarely use the assistant - opting for the more technical modes. Still, very enjoyable to use, saves having to decide multiple plugins to use.
Have you ever compare Neutron results to what you would have done? If so, how comparable was it. For example, say you used track enhance on a guitar track. Afterwards you check the eq in iZotope to see what frequency curves it made. Would you have made those same choices?
@@MrCJ-lc9ru I have used it as a starting point a few times, and it does seem to make good suggestions. Having said that, I mostly use the manual side of it, because the modules contain most of the tools I need.
@@LotusEater14 It was different for me. I stopped using Izotope products years ago (started with Ozone 1) but got the chance to try the assistant a few times on instruments and a full mix. It either didn't make any change or did the reverse of what I liked. I then tested this with some of the best productions in the genre and it did nothing or that exact same change.
What I’ve started doing with Neutron 3 is putting it on busses instead of individual tracks, especially for the unmasking feature

I use many instances of alchemy which is already quote heavy.
