Vinland saga preaches an Anti-Christ, or rather Anti-Christian, narrative following the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. That was my summation from watching season one, and I summarized my thoughts on all that in a previous video. This video will investigate season 2 and how it continues the anti-christ themes.
found it fascinating that Thorfinn never knew God, but was becoming more Christ like. While Canute began knowing him, but turned his back on him
I dont know if you know about this, but Thorfinn was a real person. The real Thorfinn was a real christian, and her wife(Gudrid) became a nun after Thorfinn died.
I don't think Thorfinn will die in the series tho, so its spoiler free.
@@kanbhdubs974 make sence why he went hippi out of nowhere
One thing that I do find interesting is that the real life thorfinn that the anime is based off of, was a real life Christian. More specifically a Catholic Viking.
great video, your work deserves more recognition ! you should dig deeper about the philosophical and religious aspects of the story, like you did in the previous one, keep on like that🔥
I also did pick up on the religious themes Canute embodies while viewing both seasons, however I think the story as a whole is a bit more nuanced than simply being "anti-Christian". Firstly, Canute is portrayed as a villain in the story, with his ideology of opposing God by forcefully creating a heaven on earth being wrong. While in season 1 Canute's ideology was portrayed sympathetically, by season 2 it is pretty clear that he is very misguided, with Thorfinn's resolve eventually causing Canute to change his ways. Secondly, in season 2 we also see Ketil's father Sverkel having the Bible read to him by Snake. Sverkel represents everything his son is not: a moral and principled man who has forgone material wealth and using slaves in favor of living a humble life. So at least in this instance, I think Christianity is being portrayed in a positive light. Furthermore, Thorfinn seems to be interested in the teachings of the Bible when he overhears Snake's reading through the window. While I doubt Thorfinn will eventually go full Christian-convert, he seems to at least be sympathetic to the Christian ideals he was hearing.
I feel like both Thorfinn and Canute kinda rebel against god, as they are both trying to create a place without suffering. I don't think both know how to do it. they just both try a different way based on what they believe would work. Canute see Thorfinn as a miracle, since he never thought it is possible for Viking to have a semblance of 'lost love'. So he thought, maybe the extreme that Thorfinn took is the way to achieve true peace and just let Thorfinn do his own thing. Perhaps his ideal is indeed the way to achieve it, who knows.
I believe they both know that a place without suffering is 'absurd' but we still need to try as hard as possible to achieve it. Kinda like sisyphus rolling a boulder up the mountain. We have to imagine sisyphus happy.
@@jamesjaya6744 I wouldn't say that trying to end suffering on Earth is the same as Canute's rebellion against God, it's not like Christianity opposes people lessening the suffering of others. I think for Thorfinn's ambition to be equivalent he would have to explicitly reject God and his heaven like Canute did. Otherwise I agree on your comparisons between the two.
Thorfin goes full Christian in history so it wouldn’t be shocking if he does in the show
@@KingDroza. yeah, I think I saw that in another comment recently. The question is how much of a focus his religious change will get in the story, then.
There is clear symbolism showing that Thorfinn is 'on the side of God' if you like, even if he doesn't explicitly mention Him.
At the very end of 'Emperor of Rebellion', we see a 'trinity' - the faces of Thorfinn, Canute then a blazing sun. This sun symbolises God, as when Canute is giving his 'building a paradise' speech we are repeatedly shown it whenever God is mentioned. He seems to be addressing the light directly when he talks of his 'rebellion'.
In the next episode 'Two Paths' there is a final standoff between Thorfinn and Canute, with one standing in the darkness and the other in light. The symbol of God hovering above Thorfinn, whereas Canute is accompanied by the skull of his murderous father.
I mean for me personally the reason I consider the show pro Christian in my eyes for 2 reasons… reason 1 an the most important reason it brought me back to Jesus Christ an his Love an Compassion, then reason number 2 in this day an age where society straight up slanders Christianity an Christian’s it’s actually refreshing to see it actually be given a positive light in the shows own way…. So it’s actually refreshing to kinda see it personally.
S3 isn't gonna be about Vinland yet but for preparation for it. Also it will test Thorfinn's new pacifistic ways a lot. S4 is probably gonna be Vinland and final season
3:40 Exactly. Part of forgiveness is recognising that even the worst person you know does not deserve eternal destruction.
Whenever I think of Canute I can’t help but think of the story of Jacob wrestling with god. Who then renames Jacob to Israel, for he was one who struggled with god and overcame. This is a strange story because it implies that god wants us to strive for our own good to create a prosperous kingdom on earth of peace. In this way Canute is more like Jacob than anyone else. He is very Old Testament in his attitudes
Those who dont know Christ will come to him, and those who grew up forced to learn christ will betray him
0:07 mentioned the Mormon church instead of Christianity💀
Shoutout to the symbolism of Askeladd sitting atop a pillar which might be a reference to early Christian ascetics sitting and living atop pillars for decades and preaching the gospel
Sorry this time it be a podcast😂😅
Great video!!!
Glad you liked it!
Unfortunately, We WILL NOT be getting to Vinland in the next seasons of Vinland Saga.
Damn that sucks
@@appleboss9742We'll be going East first (hence the name "Eastern Expedition Arc") since Thorfinn and the gang we'll need money to build Vinland. Whether or not we'll see them reach all the way to Miklegard (Constantinople), i can't say (haven't read the manga and don't want spoilers) but we will eventually see them reach Vinland alongside their interactions with the natives, which i am definitely looking forward too!
I am happy to see this video, your perspective is different from many of the content creators I normally watch and I appreciated what you had to say about Season 1.
Minor note that is often missed, Einar is of Danish ancestry that settled in parts of England during wars prior to the series. Einar's home was first burned down, and his father's life lost, to the army of the English King Ethelred. While the Danes are the antagonistic force in the setting for majority of the series, it is made very clear that every nation is just as willing and capable to be violent and cruel.
I appreciate your comparison to Berserk with Griffith/Canute, haven't seen AoT though. I do object to the idea that Canute did not care for those around him. Canute is the same has he was in Season 1, he would prefer to do things non-violently but understands the world to respect only power. He takes no enjoyment from his tyrannical acts however, Swayne's decapitated head is a representation of his guilt and self-condemnation. That is why meeting the newly actualized Thorfinn is so important to Canute. That from the vikings could emerge such a "beautiful man", Canute's faith in the rest of humanity was restored. He allowed himself to trust in others, even his perceived enemies, that paradise would be forged not from the iron fist of one's ambition but from one extending an olive branch to his neighbor.
Got a little rambly there, sorry. I feel like much of the video was a recap of season 2 rather than analysis, but the sections you did dive into were enjoyable to hear. To temper expectations though what will be "Season 3" will be on paper an understanding to what founding a nation truly entails, and the first steps towards meeting those requirements. The gang does get detoured and the focus shifts to an arc that forces Thorfinn to comfront his past life as a warrior. If Season 2 was about Thorfinn discovering himself and finding his ideals, Season 3 will test Thorfinn's resolve. Season 4 will be the actual Vinland Arc, so don't despair it does eventually happen...but temper expectations lol. If you do pick up the manga i'd be happy to see more of your thoughts on the series.
I always try to provide a unique perspective
@@ThisSaintsTheory I always love a unique perspective because it gives something to talk about to dive into the depths of the unknown. Loved your work and made me realize some things. Hope i also get to hear some of your thoughts about the manga.
Oh, wait you're serious? Let me laugh even harder.
Oh, I am serious
You're laughing alone. I thought this was an interesting perspective.
This is like a mixture of old testament kings and Saul conversion to Paul.
