I think Neitz forgets one point of Christianity. No one is perfect. Only Christ alone is perfect and good. We believe that we fall short of the glory of God. That's why we look to Jesus for salvation. The corruption was using the faith in politics. The same God that preaches forgiveness also preaches plead the case for the widow, the fatherless, and orphan.

@@PaxHiberniae No she wasn't. Mary was never chosen to be God's passage into the mortal realm by flesh because "she was perfect". To say such a thing is heresy and nigh blasphemous. Name one Bible verse that describes Mary as being "perfect". Yes, she was a virgin, but that didn't mean she was entirely without sin. If Mary was perfect, she could've died on the cross for our sins too. I hope you've changed your mind about this matter since you posted this reply.
I've seen this heretic view from many Catholics before. Exonerating any human above any other human being is idolatry, brother. We are all sinners. Only one man (the Father made flesh), was perfect. Mary played an important role in the Bible, yes. However, the whole point of Mary being chosen was to show how miraculous things can come from imperfect people. Mary being a virgin only was to show that God can do anything.
Truly, I believe it's beautiful how God can pick a poor peasant woman to have the honor of bearing Yeshua (Jesus). If she were perfect, it'd make it feel a whole lot less special to be honest.

When I first watched the show and saw Canute basically becoming an antichrist, I noticed how his logic involves this idea that God is just up in heaven looking down on our sad state of affairs and judging us for what we do in it. I think this mistakes the whole point of the incarnation, that the Son of God became man and entered into our disfunction, ultimately so that he could redeem it (which is the point of the resurrection). It was something Abp. Fulton Sheen once said: God became man precisely so we could never say “does God know what it is to suffer?” Jesus was born into poverty, experienced hunger, threat, grief, mental agony, physical harm, death, and humiliation. This I think is very smart writing regarding Canute, since it’s fitting for an antichrist character.
When Canute starts doing everything he can in service to his plan of creating a utopia, he is making it within a world that is inherently broken. No matter how much he tries, eventually everything he built will crumble (as history bears out). This is why “utopia” literally means “no place,” and why a true utopia is something we won’t have until the end of time.

Amen brother! We got a Fulton Sheen fan here! I had the same interpretation for Canute. He totally missed the point of the Gospel in believing his beliefs about God. The whole point of Christ was to let us know that God did suffer and know what it was like to be a human being. That's part of the redemption process. I guess Canute is this world's manifestation of "Berserk" themes/philosophy.

This show made me a Christian belief in god is secondary belief that anyone is capable of redemption is a hard pill to swallow for most. And I don’t blame them how can you possibly show forgiveness and even compassion for someone who killed your children or committed sexual violence against you.
It is next to impossible to achieve this and that’s why Jesus had to die on the cross. That we carry the love of Christ within ourselves to bear the burden of true universal love.

@@kekero540 Read The Kingdom of God is within You by Lev Tolstoy. I started it just a week ago, but this is exactly what it is about, and was created at a time when just saying this got him banned in his own country despite his achievements as a novelist. It is also the book that inspired the entire life's work of Mahatma Ghandi, who was a devout Hindu yet acted more true to these principles than any self-proclaimed church leader of the past millenium. It is staggeringly hard to decipher the essence of what Jesus taught, but it is in no way unexpected through all the mythicisation that was done to his life, through what has been done through the era from Constantine when the church made it into an institution to justify war and corruption all the way to present day when people declare it outdated.
You are so right about this. I would also like to add that is also not about living up to these impossible standards, but rather the process of getting closer and closer to the ideal, to rising above yourself as an instinctual being and reaching towards the divine, the capability for universal love you can find within yourself, the Kingdom of God. That is why Jesus dined with the prostitutes and tax collectors while condemning the actions of the priests, even though the latter is more righteous. It is why the shepherd goes after the one lamb instead of the ninety-nine, and why the father welcomes the prodigal son back. Everyone is capable of redemption, and they are the ones who need the teachings the most. To pray for the eternal damnation of one's enemy is the highest renounciation of Jesus' teachings.

I am not a christian. But i do align myself with the ideals of Jesus. If you have the ability to help someone then your are obligated to do so, not a single living being on this planet deserves to suffer.
I beleieve this is why the genre of seinen resonate so much with me. These strong individuals learning to love, and be loved. The embody the qualities of prophets and deities that we wish we had in ourselves. That to invoke any kind of predjudice is a true poison to this world.

  • @Swack
    @Swack 7 місяців тому +7

I really respect the amount of effort and writing you put into this. However I feel that the idea that one cannot be considered "Christian" in the traditional sense (meaning little christ, as in imitator of christ.) completely misjudges what those in Jesus' time considered being a Christian to truly be, men corrupt the idea of what it means to follow Jesus and always will, but to say "No one is truly a Christian" is far too broad of a statement with very little clarification. The primary governing idea of being "Christian" is to follow Christ, the root of the term itself does not translate to "Christ" it means "Little Christ". As a child learns from their father, inherits his traits, yet lacks the ability to properly image him perfectly, so we are we in relation to God.
To this end, the entire idea of being a Christian, is, was, and continues to be a recognition of the impossibility to be image God correctly, and therefore accepting his fully atoning sacrifice, and loving others out of love for him, growing more like him each day. Nietzsche has moments of clarity, but misunderstands many elements of what makes Christianity what it is.
The distinction between Latter Day Saints and other groups such as Protestantism is not simply a checklist or a bigoted, exclusivity race, it is the recognition that the revelation about Jesus revealed in the LDS teachings diverge from the Jesus in the new testament so fundamentally, that they came from different places, and for different purposes, and so, they are different gods, one can pick up a stone, dub it "Christ" and claim "I believe in Christ.", such is the difference between Joseph Smith's Christ and the historical Christ.
This is not an issue of exclusivity or bigotry or power, it is a categorical, historical opposition in regards to the identity of Jesus of Nazareth, and the issue of a "True" or "Fake" Christian is in the same vein as the previous point, yes, if a "Christian" is one who perfectly images Christ, there is only one Christian, but if a Christian is what the actual religious group itself has historically always been (at least in their roots), *even* if people in religious power have attempted to redefine it overtime, then anyone who recognizes they can not achieve the definition of "Christian" you and Nietzsche presented, yet still love God, believe in his resurrection and the person he claimed to be, they become Christian by rejecting Nietzche's Christianity and embracing the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, the true man and God.
Just to cover my bases, (not implying you implied what I am about to state, to clarify.) The idea that we cannot truly know what Christ the man meant through his words is hearsay, it is not a matter of telephone, or subjective interpretation, but rather a historical study, the golden standard for historical record.
I simply feel that in your (genuinely brilliant) writing, you have confused what Christ himself and the early church understood being a Christian to be, Vinland paints a beautiful picture of man's depravity (not calvinistic total depravity.), and how one who hasn't the capacity to sin is closer to the beauty of God himself, who in essence cannot sin. A beautiful philosophy that only serves to uphold what Christ sacrificed in order that we may be fully atoned for, LDS theology, as i'd be remissed to assume you're unfamiliar with (not meant as a sly joke, tone is hard!) disagrees with this notion, and claims Christ's sacrifice only existed to atone for you "after all you have done". This is a version of Christ, but it most certainly was not the historical Christ, whether one is religious or not.
Hope none of that was too rude! I really don't mean to be, religious studies is just a hyperfixation of mine, nothing but love!

Nietzsche just didn't like the thought of everyone being forgiven regardless of how atrocious the crime. As long as they put their faith in Christ, then they are to be saved.
The fundamental foundation of being a Christian is that you can't be a hypocrite when you put your faith in Christ. Sure you may have shortcomings but only you and the Lord know if you've turned against Him or not. That's why He died for us in the first place, to forgive us for our shortcomings, to offer us a connection with God and have eternal life.
Nietzsche couldn't understand that Christians simply believed that God knows truly what's in our hearts, and the ones that feel most undeserving of God's mercy are the ones saved.

My friend, you have a very wrong view on Christianity taken from people who either never read the word of God (the Bible) or from people who read it and do not understand it. My best advice is to read it yourself and read healthy commentary for what you do not understand.
Please do not believe the whole "kingdom of God is within you" and that its "an experience of the heart".
To clear the misunderstanding, Luke 17:21 talks about the kingdom of God being in "the midst of you" (you reffering to the pharisees who asked Jesus when is the kingdom of God coming) - and that means that the rightful king of the kingdom of God is right there in front of them (Lord Jesus), but they did not accept Him because the Bible says "the mind of the flesh is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God" (Romans 7:8) as Jesus is God in the flesh.
And to explain why its not an experince of the heart: Human heart is "deceitful above all things, and incurable" (Jer. 17:9) and that includes both me and you. People do not accept God and the fact that He will rightfully judge us after death for all our sins (lying, stealing, adultery, lust, greed, hate etc.) because of the same reason a thief does not want to be near a policeman.
What Jesus did for us on the cross is the only way to escape judgement, through His death and resurrection people can be saved (and that is through faith, not of works lest no one boasts, in other word its Gods grace - Ephe. 2:8,9). Also the Bible condemns anyone who calls themselves a Christian and waits for His kindom without listening and following the teachings of Jesus in their lives because faith without works is dead.

I have yet to watch the anime but from my readings of the manga, I don't recall those details. I think a better comparison is the Vikings willingness to die in battle because they want to go to Valhalla and serve as eternal warriors with Odin. Also the Vikings would mention Ragnorok, aka the end, throughout the series. I feel that's a good juxtaposition between the 2 groups in the anime/manga.

From someone who was watching this series to get ready for S2, i forgot about the debates of God in S1. When i saw it I thought of how amazing they did with it. The thought and rebukes of the lord are accurate to human nature and trials. Nitce is like a lot of modern Christian’s who frankly never heard what Jesus said was next. At our church right now we are doing a series on the now and what we belive is the Christian way of life. Vinland Saga accurately shows the horrors of the modern Church and in reality the history of the leaders of our faith. We are not told to judge yet we innately judge others on their life! If Jesus is real than why do Christian’s not know of our need to be like him? We are sadly human who will die, wether you belive or not does not change that. Vinland Saga to me shows the current reputation of so-called Christ followers and the hurt they have displayed. You did a great job with this video it inspired me to deeply reflect, thank you

Vinland Saga manages to get its messages across from both a religious and non-religious POV. It clearly displays different religions from the time period it's set in. Religion has been a huge part of history in all cultures. So if Vinland Saga avoided showing religion, it would be completely detached from the setting. But it shows the teachings of religion from a more general stand-point.

I respectfully disagree with your points of the second coming in relation to sloth. It has been historically a wrong mindset, but looking at the shifts more broad understandings of theology across the denominations, answers in predestination and man's original sin fully debunk any ideas of what man deserves in life and what to expect to change. The ongoing theme protestants have fought for centuries, is the idea of grace, not works in salvation. That does not in any means create laziness, there is a sense of piety and duty in the "earthly city". The second coming of christ is not in any way meant to relieve and make our earthly lives better, it is a timer for a reset, when everything of old is gone and the new can spring forth. And it is not an easy trial. Emphasis is put on the sword, the suffering of Christian life, yet too often do people forget or refuse to acknowledge it.

Brother you got 3 things mixed up. The Welsh are the ones who believe in the return on Artorius, and he isnt in Vinland. He IS on an island so far too the West it cant be reached, which is a paradise free from hate and war and age and sickness and death.
The Vikings believe in Ragnarok, the end of days.
The christians believe in the 2nd coming.
And Thorfinn believes in Vinland, a land far to the West that is a paradise free of war and slavery and hate
Vinland saga shows the similarity between all of these and parallels them as a sort of ubiquitous human longing for the world of strife and suffering we find ourselves in, and even create. Despite our own machinations creating the worst institutions like slavery and war, our hopes and dreams collectively wish for a single day, a hero or an event that all at once will judge us for our wrongdoing and being divine punishment upon us for all we have rought.
I absolutely love this video. Im 29, an age where all you do is think about how youre about to be 30, and think back on all the ways youve wasted your youth. 12 years ago I thought this much, so philosophically. I had forgotten. I don't linke Nietzsche very much for his unwillingness and pessimist aproach to life. If GOD didn't rise from the dead. Why so many Saints and Apostles died for a lie( which is impossible for a man willing to loose his life for something he doesn't believe in)?
Nihilist are for my personal viewpoint just cowards[no offense] trying to stay in their little dark corner and being affraid of the dangers of the outside world. Or foolish going in their life trying with their own terms to make sense of all of it. Impossible.
And you know what makes a Christian a Christian?
Trying to be better every day not for yourself or anybody here, but for GOD so he can show you the Real love he gave us initially. And for eternity

    • @ThisSaintsTheory
      @ThisSaintsTheory  Рік тому +7

I would argue that Nietzche's whole philosophy is not pesimistic at all. But a constant fight against nihilism. His philosophy is to say yes to life and reject any imaginary afterlife.

    • @chicken29843
      @chicken29843 Рік тому

People die all the time for no reason. That's the way of the world. You call it cowardice to accept the nothingness beyond our perception, but I call it bravery. What I think is cowardice is hiding behind fanciful ideas that there is a powerful man that will make everything okay and that's why death truly isn't something to fear. Hide from what is ultimately a fear of death behind the idea that there is something more that you can earn a greater reward for your actions or greater punishment. The truth is we have no reason to believe this, people simply accept what they're told when they're young and since it's ingrained so young they never even think to question it and then they've become old and now it's become such a part of their life that they've committed so much to how could they ever let go and this is I think the problem most religious people have, they very easily identify any number of other religions and mythologies however when it comes to their own stories even when faced with the fact many of their religious texts are ripped straight from pagan religions. That's all religion has really had to offer, a sense of superiority for people desperately afraid of death. Countless people still die today over which magic man they think controls everything. The nihilist has no need for such gratuitous violence. The nihilist can simply exist in the world as it is acceptg it as it is.

He thinks that he can make a Utopia here on earth, but like so many throughout history who have made such promises, season 2 shows that he is willing to kill and use others to achieve his goals. Ehhhh this all stretches the definitions of love, freedom, slavery, faith into things they're not.
While it's true there's an anti-intellectualism problem among Christians, that doesn't necessarily make them immoral.
Also, there's a lot about Christ you left out:
-Christ had the Devil as his enemy and made it ours.
-Christ said "I've not come to unite, but I've come to divide, family member against family member." After all, Truth is offensive. It will always divide.
-Christ called us to forgive others, not be vengeful or envious of their lot.
-Christ never said "don't protect your home".
-Apostle Paul said "our war is not against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalities"
The freedom expressed in Christ is only doable by taking the _whole_ of Christ's law into account, and not becoming too apollonian or worried what philosophers might say.
I still appreciate the video, it is thoughtful and does make me think. But those stretched definitions are an issue. Therefore, many so-called Christians are still followers of Christ.

My interpretation is that Nietzsche respected Christ more than any other Christian, but was still opposed to the philosophy of Christ entirely. Hence why Nietzsche considered himself the Antichrist; not because he hated Christ, but because Christ's philosophy was the antithesis of Nietzsche's own.
Also, regarding the title 'The Antichrist', Nietzsche uses the word 'Antichristen' in other places which clearly must mean 'anti-christian', but the title uses the word 'antichrist'. I think it is very plausible this is what Nietzsche meant.
Other than that, this is a fantastic video, and I'm certain Nietzsche would agree with your analysis that Christ himself was indeed Beyond Good and Evil.

Ebeeing slave to sin is a very well showned in vinlad, many quotes even thors thata real warrior doesnt need sword is very close to Jesus were His Word is a Sword. Many moments is S1 were thorfin was told that somehow he feels as he is a slave to a slave girl on the ship. Cnute thinking to be a better than God, falling and becoming a scum of a leader. Neitz unfortunelty had a very bad understanding of theological Christianity and based his philosophy on the common view of common ppl and it showes very well in his book, alo his ideas inspired hitler very much. but overall every perspective is required to understand someting deeply

This video is an amazing addition to what I have watched so far, and I really liked how Vinland Saga portraits both Christians and Vikings with their flaws and also good things. My main prayer is that the Church, with capital C to include all the Christians from different backgrounds and denominations, to be open for what the world is saying and to find in God, maybe not the answers, but a way of us Christians living as Jesus gave the example.

I refer to Vinland Saga (in the inclusion of season 2) as the more Christian anime I have ever seen, when it honestly barely even mentions such in the second season. Completely unironically Vinland saga has let me accept Christ into my heart. I am not religious, and much like Nietzche, I agree with christ but not the way the church carries out his message, nor how god allows and condemns any souls. That's not what Willibald was saying at all. He's not saying that death is love in itself. What Willibald was trying to say is that in dying we are finally able to exist in a state in which "Agape" is possible. He believes that no human is capable of love in its most pure form due to the original sin, though God compels us to attempt to embody it anyway.
Vinland Saga's core message is about attempting to pursue a place to live in which people have a chance to attempt to reacquire that love without being taken advantage of by "loveless" people.

    • @killianmiller6107

Your last paragraph is intriguing to me as a Christian as this basically says “seek heaven.” Heaven is that place where there are no loveless people, where in fact “love itself” (God) is most present. The saints are the ones who have embodied the love of Christ in their lives, and the damned are those who are entirely cut off from it; this is why people like St Francis of Assisi or St King Louis IX are canonized while people like Pope Benedict IX are not (that’s not to say Benedict IX is for sure damned, only God knows, but he’s not held up as a good example). I’m Catholic if it wasn’t obvious.

The care and respect that the author shows for cultures that are not his own is absolutely incredible. His research goes deep, and the ways he finds to incorporate the values of many different people into the message he's trying to get to the audience is astonishing. I'm not sure if you're a manga reader or caught up to the anime so I'll try not to get too spoilery. That idea of attempting to create an analogue of heaven on earth, and the proper way to go about creating it, are for sure the big theme of the second season/arc.
Yukimura truly believes that if we could all agree to give up violence that the world could become this idea of a new paradise. You can see it in the earnest way he discusses his themes in interviews. I don't think that anime will change the entire philosophy of humans as a whole, but I do wish that more people would consume his stories and really internalize the lesson he's attempting to teach.

Far as i know the concept of eternal torture is mostly something that the church made. Jesus in the Bible implies that those who don't get saved are throw into the lake of fire and have their definitive death of soul.
By this, i'd assume that "eternal torture" is not really a part of it but rather the complete erasing of your existence as a whole
Or at least that's my interpretation.
