As a previous mac owner I appreciate this video and your points and can very much agree with a lot of them, but the sad part of apple for me is that unless you have money, apple is unaffordable to those without a business. I had to give up on adobe once they started their greedy subscription service. I use CSP and affinity programs now because they only have you pay ONCE and you're able to use the software offline without having to prove every second of the day that you didn't pirate their damn programs. Sincerely, A poor freelance artist.

Very much this. There is also how OS updates intentionally makes the older deviced unusable, which has happened to me a few time with "inherited" devices I got when my family changed iPhones. There was nothing wrong with the phones, but the updates were made to intentionally make the old ones unusable. When that happened to me the third time, I knew I'd never ever buy into a mac product. It will never be worth it, they'll make them obsolete before their exorbitant pricetag can be outweighed for people without a large spending margin.
Which is a shame, because an iPad with a pen is more versatile in it's uses than a Wacom, even though both are expensive.

@ArthropodSpidey You can get just as good equipment for a lower price tag. With apple, you're paying more for the brand than the functionality. It's like a designer brand for computers, which is to say it's not a bad brand, but it's overpriced in my opinion.

I work on both MacOS and Windows. I could write a book on why I love and hate both, but I'm glad you found an ecosystem that works for you, Adam. Just a word of warning, the Apple store is not as safe as one might think. iOS Malware is a thing too.

I know a few people who work for Apple tech/customer service. I'd be happy to show this to them to let them know that for every 40 or so customers yelling at them everyday, there's an Adam out there who is so thrilled to be enjoying the service they provide. Personally, I also build my own PC and I'm currently looking to upgrade a few key parts. This video made me think I'd be better off switching to Apple instead. While I can understand the frustration. Some of the things presented here can be misleading.
-The safe appstore versus a mod for minecraft is a bit of an unfair comparison. But more dangerously it can be interpreted as macOS being totally safe, which is not really true.People hack linux, not to mention macOS which is far more popular. Reason windows is hacked more often is because its even more popular.
-"Apple being very protective of their world of hardware and software ", is dangerous. Microsoft is trying to do it as well, and its not good. You buy a thing and you dont own it is just crap. Jody Bruchon had a very nice video about "Windows 11 must be stopped".And he mentions how people are conditioned by these other operating systems like mac and ios and all the android versions to be ok with being limited in what you can do with a device you actually paid money for. In the future we will be paying monthly to run macOS and windows, which i think we can all agree is not cool.
-The apple ecosystems closed off nature being good I jsut dont agree with, but you did admit you watched linus and others' videos on it and then made your opinions on it which is fair.
Note for everyone: I have no love for windows bullshit,I just think some of the things stated here can be misinterpreted by a less informed user and think everyone needs to be able to make informed decisions.Yes apple is great,is it a "godsend" as mentioned in this video? - I think thats an exageration, and when spoken by a highly qualified professional like Adam can have influence.Yes ideally wed all be using linux, but honestly its daunting and thats why I dont use it even if I admit itd probably be a good idea.
Side note: Ive seen people in comment section be in disbelief about the possibility of scummy practices by apple, its not more holy than other companies and it never really was,its the same as all the others and makes its phones with cheap labor with suicide nets in the factories like every other company. But its not only aimed at the workers , also at the user - Casey Neistat made a video in 2003 about "ipods dirt secret" that got(according to the version on youtube) viewed over 3 million times before youtube.
    Edit: syntax.

The only problem I have with Apple is their anti right to repair stance and them basically trying to talk you into buying a new product from them rather than repairing it, worsening the e-waste problem and making it clear that the don't care about the environment when they pretend to otherwise. Once they start releasing schematics to their devices and let normal people and small businesses buy parts to their electronic, I'll be fully on board. The one and only reason I had no problem buying two iPads but won't switch my Windows PC to a Mac is that I can't fix a Mac easily if at all because of a corporation that wants to make it impossible (if not illegal) to repair their devices.

Adam... Sorry to be that guy, but there are better ways to download Minecraft Loverslab than clicking on a click here pop-up from a random website.
On a serious comment here.... I hope you were able to retrieve all the account information and secure back your files, and resolve the issue of the double subscriptions.
By the way there are two things I want to say:
    1) If someone else reading this has Windows I reccomend Windows Powertoys. A complete set of official plugins, in which there is a windows alternative of Spotlight search.
2)This is doesn't want to be a point WindowsVSMac, it's more like:"Choosing this ecosystem is really a good choice for your artistic intentions?". This is more a starting discussion point for beginners/new students than a "rant".
In the video you talk about Premiere vs Final Cut Pro. But this can be a little bit of a "reasoning fallacy" ( I'm italian and I don't know if this is the correct term), because you're putting a clunky software (because let's be honest Premiere is clunky) vs a software that is completely optimized for that environment. Do I have the same kind of advantages for the cost if for an example I'm using DaVinci Resolve? Does the software you use benefit from switching to a new ecosystem? For an example if you want to make 3D and not only 2D, does switching to Windows/IOS benefit you? WIll the software be stable?
Because a lot of time I only see this kind of question answered for Adobe software big ones Photoshop,Indesign,Illustrator,Premiere,After Effects. While right now there are a lot of alternative, good ones, that you need to pay just one time 😃
3)This is more of a personal question. Does the Mac Studio remain cold even in a more long-stressed work. Like rendereing a complex scene in 3D for a couple of hours? Because if that's the case.... HOLY COW!

Thanks for sharing this, you may have sold me on the Mac mini. I was put off of Mac because I like to be able to fix and upgrade my PC myself without having to take it in, pay a tech and then also pay 5x the amount for the parts. However, I got an ipad last year for portable drawing and was very impressed. Also like you I've dealt with Microsoft when I was hacked and then apple CS for my ipad and had a similar experience. I'll probably get the Intel over the M1 because it has higher Ram upgrades that I need.

  • @jj81Studios

I've been holding out on Apple for many years, especially while they went to intel processors. I just didn't see a reason to move over. But then the M1 chip release and I'm very excited for the new technology the M1 is all about. The Mac Studio is hitting all of my buttons and I'll be making a decision soon...it maybe worth just waiting for the M2 gen to drop (nothing beats the original though, right?)
Do you have a demo video of your Photoshop trial and error testing on M1 to compare differences from your PC setup? What performs well, what doesn't, etc.
Side note that caught my attention, you really understated the fact of that 1 time pay for app is powerful...not sure when you started using PS but there is a whole community that absolutely hate the sub service Adobe switched to.

I didn't have any thought of changing from Microsoft to Apple, mainly because I use the PC for mostly drawing, playing 1-2 games even though I rarely play games, as well as doing some basic office stuff.
sure I had some issues here and there, but not to the point that I had to call Costumer services, though for many may just throw the whole thing off the window (Accidental pun, heh) rather than just call CS, but I kept on using Windows.
after seeing this video, I may consider buying the Mac Mini for drawing/3D/Editing and so on, and maybe keep the PC for mainly gaming and/or 3D work if possible.
Though I will have to learn and explore the iOS and so on, but I think I'll have fun while doing so, I'll have to re-buy most of the programs I use to work on, since I'll be changing from Windows to Apple system, but we'll see how that goes.

I agree with you Adam 100%. I'm a PC/Mac user since the 90's and I dread everyday when I have to log in to Windows (only for work). I got 2x2080Ti, 96GB of RAM, NVME, 1950X AMD on Zenith Extreme motherboard and all that jazz packed in the Thermaltake WP100 case which is huuuuge... + 14 Noctua fans left from ETH mining era. And I got to say that it's muuuuch slower than M1 MacBook Air which is funnly enough silent 100% of the time. It's crazy how far Apple pushed ahead with their M1/M2 chipsets. It's crazy. Also people never count the software you get for free with Apple products like for example the operating system (free forever with all the future versions). And you never have to worry about the drivers whenever you want to refresh the system installation. It just works. Currently I'm working my butt off to get proper 16" MacBook Pro (only because I need the GPU power for faster rendering) and finally ditch the Windows forever. If anyone is working mainly in 2D or video editing you will get much better bang for your back going with MacBook Air M1 than any windows machine. The older and more experienced you get the more you'll value your time and the more Apple products will make sense to you. They just work.

I can really appreciate this one, Adam. I was recently on the fence between these two operating systems as well. I have to say that silence goes a long way. Nothing makes me more anxious that to hear a laptop's fans spinning up and down continuously. Also...my last Macbook pro has lasted almost 10 years and is still going strong. Nothing gets older faster than a Windows computer. That makes the price/performance ratio a little kinder to a Mac than it seems at first glance. I miss a lot of things about Windows - especially the compatibility - but like you said...you can adjust and make Mac OS your own. Thanks, good vid!

Microsoft changed the Windows 8's & 10's UI to follow Apple's lead in getting rid of all the border-defining graphics. This makes it more difficult to see where windows overlap on the screen when nothing has edges. Thankfully, you can turn some of those back on in Mac, namely the status bar at the bottom of the window (I think it's Command + / in finder). In Win10, you can turn a little on as well, like a 1 pixel border. Shadows around the window help. This is especially important for older people and/or people who are very unfamiliar with any interface, like older members of my family. They can't see or judge where the top window ends. Win 10 got worse at this than Win 8 was.
Working with an older family member back when OS 10.12 came out, I showed her all the versions of what the left end bar in Finder would look like, with the disk icons on it. After Snow Leopard, she was lost because they removed all the color from those icons. Everything was outlines in slight gradations of gray. I got it so that she has desktop shortcuts to the pertinent file locations & doesn't have to navigate around much. Johnny Ive's (or whatever his name is) ideas, of a UI that's all similar shades of gray, aren't actually all that functional for real people.

I like slick design (though not a fan of how the iMac looks) and the whole minimalistic approach. I think people underestimate the value of desk space. Unlike the gaming aesthetic, with all of it's lights, bulky designs, and cheap looking plastic.
Would you recommend the Mac Mini for casual artists and light gamers? And I've always wondered, if getting the Mini, should you also switch everything out for Apple products (e.g. phone)? Are there compatibility issues to be aware of?

I feel neutral about it, because I don't have any major needs that have frustrated me yet, but mostly it's the price point. I'm a disabled homemaker who can only work my art professionally when my health allows, and working domestically is of higher value to my household and less damaging to my health, than any job that would take me out of my home. I'm saying all this before even watching your video, so I'll be interested in what you say about the price point especially.

I make the tech environment decisions for the house. We have one person who uses an apple phone but uses PC laptops, I switched everyone else to Chromebook/PC a few years ago because I'm the one who manages the tech hygiene in the house. We will probably need new phones soon, and 3 of us should have matching phones because it makes it SOOOO much easier to deal with. That's where the price point decision becomes relevant. BUT, since I'm looking into OnePlus... The price point isn't that different.
I had never considered the customer service aspect of choosing tech before. And my backup system is a hot mess (but at least it exists now). Some of the more annoying quirks I noticed my family struggling with, like contacts accidentally being shared between iphones in the same family, are now things I struggle with navigating multiple Google accounts between family members.
My tower I built 10 years ago is still a powerful machine that meets my needs, but since Bitcoin happened, it's been without a video card. Because I decided the portability of tablet convertible laptop would be better, but very specifically I needed one with full windows and not the windows ARM. So I can use full Photoshop connected to my cintiq, and then get on the road and use Leonardo which is tablet optimized on the road. I am very happy with my choice. But would it have cost the same as an apple solution? Maybe.
But the customer service question is mind blowing.... The first thing I thought when I saw that windows was rolling out it's new beast.... Was oh fuck... It's going to mess up my system.
And then as a parent... Would it be easier to teach my wildly creative but ADHD chaotic artist teen how to manage tech hygiene, habits, care and maintenance on apple or PC. For her last birthday, she wanted to inherit my Wacom bamboo create, because it was familiar. (And also if it was hers officially, I couldn't bitch at her about using it on the bed etc) So creating a more peaceful tech experience is important for her. She's not the tinkerer I was as a kid. Burning up motherboards and breaking programs. And frankly, I'm not really that person anymore either. At some point, you're done building things. I don't even tinker on my cars anymore.
I'd love to hear your take on this.

Geez, I'm really sorry about what happened to you Adam, but at least something good came out of it: I'm glad to hear you're happy with your new ecosystem! :) I don't think you mentioned gaming on your mac: have you encountered any issues playing your games on it?
I'm not an apple user myself, but your video made me think of a few things:
    1) That !§€&@! microsoft account! I had totally forgotten about it!
I had to reinstall windows recently and I didn't switch to 11 simply to avoid creating a microsoft account. I simply don't want to create one when I'll get a new machine (I'm still using an 8 years old laptop !). Either it'll still be possible to use windows without an account, either I'll have to switch to mac or linux myself.
    2) Talking about linux, if you have time, I'd be curious to see your reaction if you try installing a distro in your big gaming PC, since you can't use windows on it anyway. (I wonder if you'll end up bashing linux after the comfort and intuitiveness of MacOS, or will bash microsoft even more...)
    3) This might be totally unnecessary on your mac (I have that feeling there are less viruses/hacks for apple out there), but install an add-on to block scripts on your browser. I believe that's what happened when you clicked on that link. I personally use noscript, but there are plenty of others. Around 10 years ago I used to get viruses almost for no particular reason, even simply browsing youtube: I haven't had an issue ever since.

About 800usd a year in software fees. I think that for me the only doubt is blender and shader loading performance, I know the cpu is good for modeling and zbrush, but I don’t know how blender compares to a basic machine with a 3060 or even a 6700xt, in terms of loading a modest environment scene. Wish someone did those tests because you always see it based on gaming, against incredibly expensive PCs, or atypical work scenarios.

It was interesting to hear a story from another world. Of course, I understand that we have a different mentality, we have a different culture. And, apparently, we have a different level of computer security. I didn't understand you at all.
So I have a few questions for you.
    1. What does "clicked on some button" mean? What button? I have no idea on which page of the search engine results the site is located, where such fierce backdoors are used. That they allow you to bypass browser protection, antivirus protection, system protection and in just one click. Even if some file was downloaded, did you launch it yourself? What site was it? What exactly were you looking for? Almost all modern mods for minecraft have a page on github, courseforge, official site. Where did you end up? I don't understand
There is still a chance that you picked up some kind of virus before all this. Maybe. But in 2022 its harder then you think. If you not clicking everything and visiting some strange places.
    2. What does it mean "I saw the notification about changing the password"? What about 2-step verification? Obviously, your files and this computer are very important. How could you not set it up?
    3. Was your email stolen too? This is also a 2-step verification. I may not understand something. How can you not access your adobe account? Isn't it attached to the mail? Which is tied to a phone number? Or you do not remember the password from the mail and it remained in the computer? This is weird.
    4. I looked on Google and Bing, Duckduckgo. The first three links to the hacker sites you are talking about are not there. What search engines do you use?
With all due respect. I got the impression that this is your fault. But I certainly won’t argue about the Microsoft support service

I have to agree with all of this, PC security is so important especially when your livelihood depends on said computer.

This is the exact reasons I haven’t used a windows PC in in over a decade. In the twelve years that I’ve been using my iMac (yes, I’m still using the same 2010 iMac, try that with a PC) I’ve never had a single problem with malware. The only time that I’ve ever had to reinstall the OS is when it started slowing down due to years of updates gumming it up. I also updated the RAM and installed a SSD and it runs faster that it did when it was new. The only reason that I’m considering getting a new Mac is that it’s gotten so old that nothing is supported anymore.
If your professional and rely on your computer to make your living, NEVER, EVER rely on windows. Not only is windows insecure, it’s also a giant time suck - look at how much time you wasted - time you could have been earning a living - just trying to contact windows support, just to have no resolution to the problem. There’s also the time and expense of having a PC serviced, not to mention any data loss.
If your just gaming, then PCs are fine. For anything else, it’s a colossal waste of time and money.

When people switch either direction, I warn them about the differences in how files are handled. Usually, it's PC-to-Mac people & the key one I remember is about copying folders. If you have two folders with the same name, in Windows, you get to merge them. In Mac (I'm a few OS's behind) you don't get to merge them.
Let's say the folder "TripPhotos" on your USB stick as files A, B, and C, while the folder "TripPhotos" on your drive has files B, C, and X. So, you want file A in there, but I'm being simplistic. Pretend there are hundreds of files and only 1/3 of them are in both locations.
If you copy (not move) the folder FROM the stick TO the drive, it will ask you if you want to replace TripPhotos with the one being copied. If you tell it yes, then you will *lose* the file X. It's gone. Mac OS replaces all the contents rather than merging them. Windows gives you the option to handle the files inside the folder for copying over, skipping, etc. Windows users are accustomed to getting those options and just need to be aware of the difference.

My husband was a software engineer for 40 years, swore by Microsoft, and had me convinced Apple was more complicated and too expensive. In 2015 I got so fed up with Windows and all the last-minute glitches and time I spent with Windows and Microsoft tech support that I sold my PC and bought a MacBook. Then an iPhone. Then an iPad. My husband was so impressed with how everything worked and the great customer service (that now didn't seem so over-the-top expensive) that he switched too. Last year I wanted some hardware touchscreen features the MacBooks don't have and thought about switching back. My husband tried to talk me out of it, of course. I bought a Dell and after messing with it for two days I returned it, used my iPad exclusively for six months (the Affinity suite made it possible to do everything on an ipad, including raw photo processing and a regional newsletter). I finally decided it was time for another computer so I bought an iMac, which I love. And yes, I've ditched Adobe and the monthly fees, too. My route isn't for everyone and I have had a few minor glitches with Apple devices but I'm still on board--until the ridiculous glasses replace phones, anyway.

The m1 with 16 gbRam or if you go serious the mac studio, the 'fat mac mini". The Imac has the problem that when become slow in the future you can't leave it because the monitor will just work and you are stuck with a great monitor and a low old computer. And the macbooks are ok but you will have a dying battery with time so a mac mini is more affordable and ready to use.

Great conclusion for you, but to be fair, the whole issue started due to two user errors:
You got your machine infected yourself and used the same machine for work and play.
Getting infected on Mac isnt as easy because of how few things you can do with it, but it still isn't entirely safe, as newcomers might think. And while the support is lightyears ahead of MS, you do pay for it, given how much more expensive their things are. Their walled garden is both a blessing and a curse, and given how i dont need to rely on MS support myself, the downsides of Apple are too severe.

Maybe then switch from PS to ArtStudio Pro? Or is there some critical downside? Would love to hear your opinion.
I suppose it should allow for seamless switching between mac and iPad, when working on an art piece, since its the same software, and it backs up files to iCloud. Also one time buy.

While I was happily watching this and nodding to everything Adam says (I've been an Apple user for 25 years, also after a disastrous experience with PC), my Mac decided to restart out of the blue. Not the first time it happens to me, but... oh the irony. However, after a quick check, everything was back to normal.
While I acknowledge PCs / Windows have come a long way since the 90s, I'm no longer a kid with plenty of time to kill and learn through trial and error - right now I need something that "just works" and Apple gives it to me. Sure I've been seduced to make the switch from time to time, but in the end I haven't seen it worth my bother... yet.

Exactly same experience i had. ,, You ll receive a call in 24h,, and ive heard this sentece for like 4 times,,.. Someone called me after i had a rage, she coudlnt solve my problem and told me she s gonna call the 2nd day. She didnt. After a few days she called back and I had another rage moment and ive told her to call me when I actually have time to do troubleshooting... I cant be available 24h/24h, 7/7days. I ve told her to call me in the weekend between some certain hours. Of course i havent been called then. In the end, some sort of tier 2 support helped me to solve the problem, but it was super super time consuming and frustrating.

apple products are amazing, i have a second hand ipad pro, i think it's the 2018 model, it still works nice other than the battery- the only issue is the fact that you can't fix devices if you don't have a lot of money, customization isn't that important when your device can work just fine after a couple years, not everyone wants to change and mix parts- the fixing and repair is the issue because you either pay a fuckton with apple, go to a store to fix it for possibly the same amount with possible knockoff parts or just wait until the thing dies
if apple starts making repairs more possible then maybe i would jump ship but so far it doesn't seems like it

I did want to note that you can absolutely have 2 Adobe apps without jumping up to the full Creative Suite.
