    There's a reason why AoE2 still has a competitive scene while so many other RTS games are lost to history. It's because it's got something more than the sum of its parts. It's like chess, it doesnt need fancy graphics, it doesnt need slick animations. The gameplay is tight, the strategies and meta ever changing. It's just a damn good game.

  • @camfunme
    @camfunme Рік тому +133

    99% sure the way this works is: In AoE2 when a monk picks up a relic a new unit is actually spawned in place of the old one, called monk with relic. When you normally touch the church with a monk with relic, 2 triggers go off 1. the monk with relic -> monk, and 2. generate a relic inside the church. So I assume that the triggers are queued when you select the church and there is a check to cancel the triggers if a move order is given, but not for dropping the relic. Thus both triggers go off and monk -> monk, and relic is generated.
    Seems like the fix is to find the trigger cancel code when move order is given and copy paste / rereference it in the relic drop order.

    • @Oshroth
      @Oshroth Рік тому +11

      I don't think it's a separate unit (That's a lot of programming overhead). Instead it would just be a carry item state like villagers and other units use.
      In terms of the bug, what is likely is happening is there is a special monk action to drop the relic in the church, but on completion it doesn't check if the monk has a relic (because the code assume that they have one to be able to trigger the action), it only "removes" the relic they are carrying and adds a new relic to the church, but because they are not currently holding a relic, the original relic doesn't get removed

    • @RobertJW
      @RobertJW Рік тому +31

      @@Oshroth If you make a custom map, you can actually drop in "Monk With Relic" as a separate unit from "Monk", something you can't do with any other carry item state unit.

    • @HaloNeInTheDark27
      @HaloNeInTheDark27 Рік тому +4

      @@RobertJWisn't the monk the only unit that can carry an object?
      You can spawn a monk carrying a relic because it's not the same as a monk not carrying one, which would make things different when creating a scenario or something.
      Edit
      I've double checked the tech tree, and I cannot found any other unit that can carry items, so unless I'm blind, I'm guessing when talking about units with carry item state, you mean units like konniks, ships and rams, but those would be a totally different thing.
      If they had to add every single variation of every unit that can "carry" another unit, you would have hundreds of useless copies of units

      EU4 is like that too, but it is wayyyy more complex. For one thing, the map is the entire planet, minus a few tiny specks of islands that were too small to add, and for another, the game has a ton of unique mechanics, and the mechanics can change simply based on which country you choose to play as. Not only that, but the AI is much more skillful than in some RTS games, and will actively try to stop you if you expand too quickly, and they form alliances and guarantee the independence of small nations to keep you from expanding into lands you and the AI share an interest in. Another unique thing, every single nation has its own culture, and forming an empire allows you to unite your culture group, which gives you more bang for your buck for each province you take of your culture. The coolest thing is that it is entirely possible in that game to conquer the entire planet, either directly or through Dominions (vassals).

    I was introduced to the AOE series probably back in 2007-ish and played it all throughout my childhood. AOE2 is and always will be my favorite, and it's the only one I play nowadays, but I also have huge amounts of hours of AOE1, AOE3, and Age of Mythology. I will definitely be playing the AoM remake when it gets released.

    One of my first memories is my dad teaching me to play Age of Empires, the very first one. So it's all a nostalgia trip for me, and each game evokes different memories, all of them the kind of warm memory you cling to
    But if I had to pick one, it's probably AoE3...
    Okay listen, I get it xD
    But for me it's about family. My family takes family quite seriously, gathering from across the world for Christmas every year. And us grandkids didn't always get along... Until we started LANing AoE3. And we still do that sometimes, as a bunch of 23 year old we set up a lan with same computers we had over a decade ago
    Perfection

    I first started in Age of Empires from a demo disk that had several games on it. Demo as in it was just a partial version of AoE1. That game is one of my favorite games of all time, but I did not play as much AoE2 growing up. I played it more as an adult. This video reminds me of my favorite AoE1 mission, which I believe is an early Babylonian mission where you start with a single unit, a Priest (basically the same thing as a Monk) and you have to build an army big enough to take over from that 1 unit. You can't build any more of them, but the conversion thing has always been super-strong. Also in one of my few online games I played in AoE1, I built priests to try to stop an opponent's rush, but expected low-level infantry and instead they sent Chariots. Chariots in AoE1 are highly resistant to conversion. However, I happened to convert his first couple of chariots instantly anyway.
    He still ran me over a few minutes later (because I'm bad at multiplayer as well) but it was a very memorable moment.

    i used to love playing Age of Empires 2 while travelling South America cos it seemed like it was on nearly every computer in every internet cafe. My general tactic was to as quickly as possible build walls as close to the enemy as possible to block them from getting most of the resources... make tons of archer towers to defend it... enough to consistently kill all attackers. Then try to take their resources first.. dont mine the ones close to you.. do the ones far away... in mid to late game you start using your own resources while they have run out completely.. thats when you attack.. im talking about fighting ai though not multiplayer with humans.. it probably wouldnt work against other humans

    BTW someone actually visited every church that claimed to have a piece of the true cross of christ. He documented the size of each.
    When he was done he added the volume of each piece together and compared it to the volume of the assumed size of the cross.
    His calculations showed a significant amount of the cross was missing.
    What people always miss is, most pieces of the cross are basically a splinter.
    So what the monk was actually doing was cutting off a tiny piece of the relic and delivering that as a piece, over and over again. It's still a piece, so it's still a relic.

    For AOE multi-player the key is trade carts. To start build 50 villagers and 50 carts, build your markets as far from each other as possible to gain as much gold as possible. Use the other 100 population for troops. Back when I was playing on a Lan I woukd typically get 200,000 to 300,000 gold in a three hour game. When there are no trees left on black forest, and the only way to make resourses is to spend gold, having 150 trade carts and 20 castles to make janisaries means even when you lose an entire army a new one magical appears.

    My favorite AoE is easily III. I'm actually a little salty that II is so popular because it came at the cost of support for III. We did get the DE recently but then it was straight on to IV after that. III is so well paced, and the home city, which threw II players for a loop, provides a really cool mechanic for timing pushes/defenses.

I also remember not knowing that you had to _unpack_ the trebuchets in the game to make them attack things.
