I remember a glorius age where you could do something similar with your mobile device. You used to be able to upgrade the storage, even change the battery if you wanted to without having to worry about breaking the phones screen. Good times.

I'm largely storing games on a couple external hard drives until 2TB SSDs go down in price and are on a decent sale. 1TB seems too small for the medium to long run, so I'm patiently waiting for a 2TB SSD to prevent buying a 1TB SSD and another SSD shortly down the line. I don't mind transferring games in the meantime.
Seems smart, one thing I saw on UA-cam the other day was that the best one went down in price to around the same price as the budget one.
Your probably going to pay the same price as the PS5 itself for a ssd that big..
Good luck with waiting. With chip shortage, the hyperinflation, conflict with Russia that affects all markets and China craving Taiwan invasion you might get your 2TB for lower price in like... never.
@@sullivann - A 2TB SSD goes for about $200 cheaper than a physical PS5 right now. It's a certainty they'll be even cheaper in 12-18 months when I get one, even more so on a good sale.
@@sullivann the XPG GAMMIX s70 blade is probably the best deal for a fast gen 4 nvme. It’s just as fast as this gigabyte drive (literally every 7000 MB/S drive on the market uses the same phison e18 controller besides Samsung who uses a custom controller) and its available at every major retailer for $249.99. It has a low profile heat sink that will work with the ps5 too. Ive even seen it on sale for 10-20 dollars below its $250 price a couple times too. That’s the drive I recommend if you want 2TB but don’t want to break the bank.
I actually ordered this same drive on Amazon a few months ago, I purchased a 1tb but received a 2tb drive instead. The speeds on my PS5 don't register as fast as the drive is rated for, but I can't complain considering I got double the storage for half of the price.

I went with a 2 TB XPG Gammix S70 Blade and it runs plenty fast for way less than what the Aorus costs.

I recommended using your internal storage for video clips and screenshots, M.2 SSD for Ps5 games, and an external USB drive for PS4 games.
I have had crashes with PS4 games on the external drive from time to time so if you don't want potenial crashes, move your main PS4 games to the M.2 SSD.
Or just get a 4tb ssd when those come out this year

I am getting this because I've finally got a PS5 coming in. Like the PS4 pro, it is easy to install another drive. In fact, even easier because for my PS4 pro, I had to REMOVE the old HDD to install the SSD and reinstall the OS and patches. This one is an add-on slot, which is amazingly convenient.
Have I ever done an upgrade like this? I upgraded my ps3’s hard drive day one. When SSDs were a thing I put an SSD in that bad boy and never looked back. No it doesn’t truly benefit from SSD speeds but it cuts down on a lot of the noise and heat. It’s fantastic.
Now my ps4 pro? Definitely a huge difference when you use an SSD.
I really need more storage and I like Gigabyte’s hardware

I thought the 600Gb that comes with the ps5 was gonna be painful, but honestly I've never had issues with it, I'm the kinda guy who plays a game, completes it, and moves on so I don't have to keep games around forever, and if I've done everything in a game, it just seems obvious the get rid of it for new games. So I've actually been reconsidering getting an expansion until they're huge and cheap.
Same tbh. I usually only have 3-4 games I'm actively playing in rotation, so I typically don't have issues when it comes to uninstalling and reinstalling. I'm not one of those people that needs to have ever single game they own constantly downloaded on their console.
Thats beacuse games on ps5 are smaller than their pc and old gen counterparts (Dont know about xbox series) thanks to chip specifically for decoding There and ssd. So smaller disk kinda works in ps5.
It all depends on what you play. Not all games are as huge as call of duty

I agree it's nice to have extra storage I went with Samsung 980 Pro 2tb $299 which gives you a full 2tb after formatting.
The only problem I’ve ran into was that my “Other” storage was 140GB with no way of deleting it. Unless you do a Hard reset on the system.

Anyone else notice towards end of video screen on window reflection doesn't match what's actually on the screen. (no doubt due to the screen being added in post from a direct capture to avoid glare)
I went through a lot of trouble just to be able to use an external SSD to store PS4 games instead of a Hard drive, just for the speed and convenience I ended up buying a lot of enclosures until I realized only enclosures with an Asmendia chip work fine with the PS5's rest mode. Other enclosures would disconnect when the console enters rest mode. I have 1TB for PS4 games and 1TB PCIe Gen 4 for PS5 games.
When Bob is scrolling his screen shots, watch the reflection on the wall XD. If anything I wouldn't have known any addition editing was going on until I saw it so..good job! Also yeah if you aren't putting an m.2 ssd in your PS5 AT LEAST get a usb drive for offloading stuff and saving yourself download time.

Got a gen 3 nvme sweet up as external drive for PS4 games and a 2tb nvme 4th generation internally in the PS5. Plenty of space.

On my PC i only use 4 TB SSDs. All smaller ones just waste slots. And remember, you shouldn't use the complete space available. 20% of the SSD drive should be unused to expand the lifecircle of the drive.
Years ago i replaced the HDD in my Xbone with a 4 TB SATA SSD. Cloned the original one with Acronis at my PC and put it in the old console and it worked. Yes its wasted, but i had to try it. With the PS5 it don't work, cause the internal SSD is made from several chips soldered to the mainboard of the PS5. So no replacing possible.

I've never seen a PS5 or an XBOX(Whatever-it-is) in person but having it next to a switch (@6:14) made me realize how crazy huge these devices are.

the ps5 parameters for accepting an nvme drive is pretty simple. Is it Gen 4 then it works, if it isnt it doesn’t. They make gen 4 drives that actually have read and write speeds worse than high end gen 3 speeds (slower than 3.5GB/s.) also getting the fastest drive won’t speed up the games since it seems the ps5 can’t read faster than roughly 6GB/S and realistically a 5 GB/S read gen 4 drive which use an older E16 phison controller versus this gigabyte option that uses the e18 controller can be found for under 100 dollars now. I would recommend getting one of those. Examples are rocket 4.0 by Sabrent. Seems those e16 drives are being phased out for the faster e18 though so you are only going to save about 20-40 dollars getting the cheaper gen 4 drive anyway. My issue with gigabyte is their warranty and RMA service is one of the worst in the business. The drive is most certainly good because they just buy the nand flash from kioxia (Toshiba, Samsung, or skhynix, and the controller from phi’s on and slap it on a pcb. But you better pray that thing never has any issues because good luck reaching an actual human that will get you a replacement.
Now that Microsoft finally has Direct Storage for PC, after having it on Xbox for a bit now, our PCs can actually take advantage of these faster speeds. No more CPU bottleneck.

Yes, Sony announced and explained their GPU directly accessing the SSD before the PS5 released and way before Microsoft. That's why they won't let you play PS5 games off an external drive.

@@martythestines It's not a "load properly" problem, I think it's a "standards of experience" situation. Sony has said the PS5 is fast and has "near instantaneous load times," so anything that would increase load times is forbidden, like loading from an external USB drive. There might be a thing in the future with PS5 exclusives where they depend on the speed and bandwidth of direct storage for game mechanics reasons, but currently most games are still multi-platform, so that's unlikely to actually matter.

I've read in a few places that Firecuda 530s are among the fastest option. The 4TB drive is still damned pricey, though.
Don’t have too much money to spend on storage. Right now just delete or redownload the games if I really wanna play them again. Some games I’ll just never wanna play anymore but some I don’t mind to keep playing so I’ll keep it.
As a person who just upgraded with the samsung 2tb ssd (it was around 250$ since i had a gift) it has been absouluty worth it.
I miss the old intro, with the logo over that quick drum kick and old-school video game "character destroyed" sound a-la Mega Man.
I installed a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro last fall. Works great so far. Seems to be a tad faster than the console storage. I did have to buy a heatsink separately, but that's hardly a big deal. All together I spent around $170 total.

I got this same drive and installed it earlier. Says though that my 7K speed drive is only a little over 5K. Anyone else experience that? Will it matter that it's not reading faster?

I‘m really thinking about expanding my ps5 storage. But I‘m still confused about the cheaper ssd variant. Does external storage not let me play the games? Is it better to get the internal storage expansion? Please enlighten me
PS5 games can only be played directly from the internal SSD or an add-in SSD like shown in the video. External USB drives can have PS5 games backed up onto them, but they can't be played from them and will need to be moved back to either of the SSDs. PS4 games can be installed to any drive and be run from any drive without having to move it to internal storage.
These insane file size games have these day is why I prefer to buy physical. I only go digital if it's a download-only game like an indie for example of if it's like HEY GET THIS COOL PACK OF GAMES SUPER COOL only to reveal the disc either has one of the games or no games and the rest of the games are in a download code. I totally get the appeal for digital, none of the constant switching out of discs, but jfc the size of these games sometimes.

I got the officially licensed PlayStation external 2 TB drive and it works just fine only $80
Cool but is almost 300 CAD in Canada. The video review was great though.
Had my eye on a WD one, but going to hold back for now. So far I've run into very few issues with the internal storage capacity. Might check back later this year when more games start hitting stores.

You can store and play PS4 games off of an external drive. I just ordered one and am hoping to hold off until M.2 drives come down in price a bit.

So, the PS5 is 400/500$/€ (if you can get to buy it... they were sold in packs for over ~630$/€ in christmas), Games are ~80$/€ (even if they are digital), and you need an extra SSD for another ~200$/€ for the ten-ish games a normal person will buy over this gen... Yeap, being poor is not fun.
I still have a few games installed at a time and I really don't need more, just gives me more reasons to not finish the games I have lol.

Wulff Den, Can I ask what you do for a living? If you don't mind. How the hell are you affording multiple switches, all the times, $100 SD Cards, PS5, Xbox (not to mention the multiple Design lab controllers you got with it). Also, you have a pretty sick apartment that i'm guessing was not cheap.....so far all I have on my list is Drug dealer
