The old Retroid Pocket 2 suffered from a lot of the same issues most portable emulators do. The NEW Retroid Pocket PLUS fixes MOST of those issues. Are these things getting good again? EVEN the CHEAP ones???

I didn't skip the surf shark ad.... Letting creators be creative with the ad is smart... and disturbing. Hug your Mini-Wulff homunculus for us.
My comment has be touched by Daddy Wulff! I am blessed!!!
I always skip sponsor spots because I've literally never seen an ad and wanted to but the thing in it. So the company wasn't gonna get my business anyways
@@rs07scapeNews yeah sorry wulffden but sponsor block is king.
The stuck up dad attire was spot on. Also, mad kudos on that child-sized iPad. Enjoyable content as always
Ahhhh, glad you managed to get hold of one. It's incredible!
Odd it took this long to get it though, I got mine end of January and I didn't order till early December. Could be because i got an email from the company since I bought the retroidpocket 1 a few years back.
@stoneybridger mine doesn't have either issue, stop speaking as if you represent all owners.
@stoneybridger what's out of this world is that a small non mass production company is pumping out two skus in many colours, individual parts and one of the handhelds can emulate some ps2 games at $100
Bob, you are the only channel I don't skip the ads on.
He does the work . we love watching the ad

Him and Internet Historian are the kings of ad segments worth watching
You mentioned that there’s only one SD card slot and it already has the OS installed, but that’s not the case, at least for my Retroid 2+. The 32GB is built into the device and the microSD slot was completely open for me. I installed my own microSD that I just pulled from another device and it worked fine and now I have both the 32GB internal storage and my 256GB microSD card.
I didn't think a sponsor ad would give me fresh new nightmares, but here we are
All these retro emulation devices make me realize how good the 3ds systems are. A cfw 3ds can handle most of these emulators just fine. And it has the double screen for DS/3ds
Yeah, jailbroken consoles are still a good investment. A new 3dsxl can emulate ps1 pretty ok, and a jailbroken vita can run psp and some n64 as well. of course, a 3ds can also run ds/3ds games, and a vita can run vita games. The selling points of the rp2+ are dreamcast, saturn, better n64, and Android. Of course the rp2+ is smaller and cheaper than a 3ds or a vita. I think an Odin is the only console out there in a good price range that could beat a jailbroken handheld
@@chrisasma9700 Actually with the new 3ds, if you use the right settings, you can run most ps1 games at full speed. I was able to get all the crash bandicoot games to run at full speed.
@@realthemariogamer I agree I got mine set up and even though retroarch sucks on the 3ds the ps1 emulation is crisp
@@tking2199 true, it's a great deal (well not right now cause of 3ds prices) if you wanna play ps1 games on the go.
My only problem for me personally was that the retro emulation system I have is waaay more pocketable. I prefer the form factor and buttons of my current device.
This might be the only channel where I come for the ads and stay for the content. But this one, this one haunts me.
It was such a pain to get the “Switch” theme/launcher on the original Retroid Pocket. I’m glad they took that concept for the new launcher

Ayo WTF!
This channel is the only one I watch in-video sponsored ads on, the skits are just so interesting lol.
I just bought myself a RP2+. Paid a little extra to order on Amazon to get 2 day shipping, but I don't mind.
So far, I'm enjoying it. I still need to buy a bigger SD Card for it, so I can't put EVERYTHING I want on it right now, but I got a bunch of N64, some DS, Dreamcast, PS1, plus the usual 2D systems and about 400 MAME Arcade games.
I will say, out of the various frontends I've tried so far (including the default built in one and DIG), my favorite is Reset Collection. I actually liked DIG quite a bit, but the scraper missed a lot of boxart and screenshots. I got it all set up and working, took about a day and a half of constant fixing to get all the artwork how I wanted. I tried to change the theme, and the whole app broke and had to be re-installed, meaning I lost all my work.
So instead of spending the time to fix DIG again, I decided to give Reset a try. I'm liking it much better.
Reset versus Dig. Dig has Collections, so you can make custom groups, Reset doesn't. Dig has a button if you're missing artwork that'll take you straight to a google search for that game and if you just back out when you save an image it'll auto-set it for you, Reset doesn't (you have to manually download images, add them to the game's image list, then set the image). DIG is free with a $3 charge for premium features, where as Reset is a $5 app. Reset sometimes will merge games together into a single selection, when clicked it brings up a list of those merged games to pick from, meaning sometimes rom hacks will be merged in a way that doesn't make much sense, and it's a bit annoying to fix. Dig has custom themes you can download, Reset doesn't.
Reset looks nicer to me and is laid out better with the boxart, screenshot, title, and game description all on the same page as you're scrolling through, while DIG requires you to click on a game to see it's info. Reset scrapes way more images than DIG does so there's less missing art. Reset can load a youtube video for each game that'll replace the screenshot after a few seconds of hovering over a game, DIG doesn't. Dig has a tendency to break when using the built in theme installer (it happened to me, and upon google, I found out it's fairly common). DIG also has issues when you're setting a lot of boxarts and stuff, where sometimes you'll set an image and it'll just take you back to the beginning of the game list instead of leaving you on the game you were on (it also sometimes temporarily removes games from the list, so any time it resets your position, your best bet is to back out and go back in to make sure every game is showing up).
I'd say there's pros and cons to both DIG and Reset, but for me, DIG breaking and making me re-do everything was enough to make me hesitant to use it. Reset so far has been perfectly fine. And as annoying as it is to have to manually download missing images and add them in, the better layout for the game lists has me preferring Reset. Reset also hasn't broken on me 2 days after installing it, unlike DIG.

As for the device itself, from a physical standpoint. The right thumbstick nub slider thing sucks. No question there. Like, even for slider, it's not the best. Trying to rotate it in a circle will sometimes have it not pressing up all the way and stuff, and it's too stiff to be comfortable to use. Luckily, most systems that would require the right stick don't really run well enough to matter. So it really doesn't effect me much, and it's perfectly serviceable for use as Retroarch shortcuts or as N64's yellow arrow buttons.
I absolutely love the D-Pad. I never owned the original RP2, so I can't compare them. But to me, the D-Pad feels exactly like an old school NES or SNES style D-Pad SHOULD feel. It's not too stiff, and not too cheap feeling. It has just enough of a rubber membrane feel to feel 'right'. And it doesn't have super sharp corners like some cheap D-Pads have, so fighting games with it are actually perfectly fine.
I wish the 'trigger' buttons were actual analog triggers as opposed to just buttons, but it's not really a massive deal. They're shaped well and feel fine to hold and press.
I wish the start button was on the right instead of the left. Like, under the bottom right of the screen. I'm just so used to pressing Start with my right thumb, that it's a tad annoying.
I also wish the face buttons (ABXY) were a bit bigger. Not taller, but like, wider. They're perfectly fine the way they are, but I feel like it would have been more comfortable to do running jumps in Mario and similar button presses if the buttons had more surface to press.
And last, less of an issue with the console and more probably with Android. I wish you could easily set portions of the touch screen as extra buttons (like L3/R3 in the top corners of the screen or something). Mostly for use with Retroarch stuff. It'd be nice to toss a save/load state button on the screen, or even use the touch screen as an option to open Retroarch's menu, without having to rely on full controller overlays. Like, having just a few invisible buttons on each corner of the screen for extra stuff.
Since recently getting my RP2+, it has quickly become my official "weekend" device, since it is basically a phone with a controller embedded into it. In fact if it had a sim card slot and could make calls, I would even consider making it a daily driver phone, I like it that much. Finally, I just wanted to mention: THAT AD SCARRED ME BOB! Have a lovely week.
Bob, for the GameCube games try the European versions of the ROMs that lets the game run at 50hz increases the performance by a lot. I have Mario Kart Double Dash and it runs 35- 40FPS, completely playable.
See that's the problem with devices like this they suck but some people like you can't really admit they suck they always got to say it works you just didn't do it right if you have to do anything it means it sucks and it didn't work right to begin with that's how you kind of rate products how they work without tinkeringnand downloading spacific things it make it playable
@@CHICKENmcNUGGIESMydude Specific. Maybe try not to suck at spelling before coming at me like I told you to buy this system. And welcome to the world of 3rd party emulation software and hardware. You don't want to tinker? Go buy the original system. Even running these emulators on PC require some setup and "tinkering". Apparently, you were unaware of this, people that buy these emulation portable systems are going to have to tinker one way or another, it's not a licensed console. Get off your high horse.
@@CHICKENmcNUGGIESMydude the problem with devices like this is that they're 3rd party. If you don't want to tinker buy the original console.
@@nostalgiatrip1 feel free to pick on his spelling but he's not exactly wrong. Look at what you're saying. Play a PAL version that's already a reduced frame rate and then expect that to also perform even lower in the high 30s to low 40s and boom it's "playable." It's standards like that which lead people to believe emulation is a low quality alternative and push people to fpga or original hardware, when in reality it's people playing on really low spec hardware trying to squeeze blood from a stone. This device does dreamcast and n64 well. The gamecube performance is shoddy at best. Tinkering is fine but having to tinker to still get a C level performance isnt.
There's a lot of GameCube games running great on the device. It may not be perfect in some cases but for $99 I don't expect it to be. You'd have to be poorest of the poor if you believe a $99 device will get you full speed GameCube, PS2, and higher. If you want perfect ratios and frames and all that, play your games on the original hardware, and let those who don't mind 25 fps instead of 30 fps enjoy their games.
As long as an emulator can run SOTN, MGS, Silent Hill 1 and majority of NES & SNES (Earthbound)
Then it's golden in my book.
I love these videos! As a fellow Retroid Pocket 2+ user, it’s worth pointing out that the operating system isn’t actually on the SD card. I bought a 256gb card when I got it and just swapped it out and everything was fine. The system just auto populated the new card with the necessary folders for android. You don’t even need to use android transfer on your Mac. I also have a Mac and you can just plug it directly in since it’s just formatted as ExFat. That should save you some headache in the future.
💯WULFF DEN got this part totally wrong, other than that I enjoyed the video.
Where did you get the pocket 2+?
I've been looking at getting a retroid pocket 2+ for a while now and there hasn't been any videos as comprehensive as yours so thank you. You have made up my mind and I look forward to taking the plunge and getting into retro gaming
Bro what? Do you not know Taki udon?
Wulffden is awesome, also check out Retro Game Corps cuz he did some on RP2+
These are my favorite kind of videos that you make. It's encouraging to see how far these handhelds are coming along 😁
So here's something interesting, I'm pretty sure that Retroid and Ayn are the same company. They share a bunch of employees and office space. It makes a lot of sense for the company to make the "affordable" handheld Retroid Pocket 2+ and the "Premium" handheld Ayn Odin Pro. I've used the OG Retroid Pocket 2 and it was good, but suffered from the lack of touch screen which was a deal breaker for me. With an Odin already ordered I'll just wait for that to come in.
I’ve heard the heads of both of these companies are actually related… as in family members.
i have never heard this before ??? 🤔🤔🤔
That's not true. Taki udon owns ayn. If he has a family member than yeha

Looking forward to receiving my Pocket 2+ next week. Thanks for the video.

Going to agree that a truly good handheld needs to just work out the box, no fiddling, adjusting and messing about. Having the fear of drift added to the mix and you have a high maintence machine. I'm sure some people like that and it's not a big deal to them, but for me it's a huge issue.
At least the N64 emulation is good!!

Hahahahahaha the sponsor spot it’s so random, i love it!
The freshest sponsorships ever.
I love that you were ashamed of that ad for about a second before just moving on haha
I ordered a RP2+ recently because it's very clear that many of the titles I want to play on my Switch will never come to NSO, will be poorly implemented and be tied down to a subscription service.
Obscure GBA, lost in licensing SNES and N64, plus PSP & Dreamcast I can experience for the first time. As a handheld you can replicate the experience of the game in your hands. You can run console games on a TV via HDMI. TV games in your hands OR handheld games on your TV.
This makes it more of a "switch" than the Switch Lite!.
Great vid, Bob. Glad you went with the best color ;-)
Your ad reads are always the best lol
Great video, retroid pocket 2 plus has a great price point. Ill probably stick with my RG351v till it dies or i get the AYN Odin or Stream deck. The 351V does a lot for the price point as well, as long as you dont go past ps1 and some dreamcast.
The frickin monitor with the apple sticker being the prop ipad had me laughing wayyyyy too hard lmao
8:30 Something I want to note here. The upgrade kit contains parts that would allow you to convert your old (and remaining) RP2 parts to a console like unit that you can connect to a TV and use. Depends on if you want that kind of thing. I've read the touchscreen is a pain in the butt to install and you are most likely going to break the old one removing it.
if you ever get a replacement screen (like I did) they ship you the front half of the case with the screen already installed.
My retroid pocket 2+ arrived a few weeks ago. It didn't have a SD Card in the sd card slot so I'm curious why yours is running the OS from it. I ended up adding a 512GB card to mine which is more than ill ever need.
Yea, mine ran from the internal memory. No sd card included too.
Yeah same here, I'm wondering if that's a mistake in the video or if the most recent batch has this weird setup.
Turns out I was just straight up wrong about this. I'm removing that part of the video
I picked one up, I haven't had as much time as I'd like to mess with it but I'm happy so far. The touch screen made it a decent choice for some dosbox titles too. Master of Orion 1 and 2 on the go! Whoo!
Great video, interesting upgrade for retroid pocket and other devices, lol for your ad, anyways, keep it up!
the little bob with the I HATE THIS FAMILY has me in tears omg
You forgot to mention that if you buy the upgrade kit from the original 2 it also comes with a custom acrylic case that you put your old motherboard in and turns it into a TV set top box. Its really nifty.
I'm always stuck in between "Do I want to play all the gameboy color games" and "I want to play Zelda Windwaker really bad!" I've been going back and forth between handheld emulators.
Wow! Even if it's not fully playable, its amazing to see it play GameCube at all. I might wait another year and see if a more powerful iteration comes out.
Got an RG351V and an Odin, that's all I need! I got the purple Odin bout 3 weeks ago, reminder the transparent versions don't come with lights, but the options are there in the menu. Love the Odin!
The GP2X got me into the Retro market, from like 2005? Then I got an RG351V and now the Odin.
2:44 what the **switch click** bob LOL

There is no sd card in that slot, its empty. You're free to add storage without any risk to the system.
This is definitely up there with the best ads, top work sir!
i ordered mine in january and can't wait to enjoy this device
this seems like something i’d definitely get for sure - if you got this, a steam deck, and switch i think you’re more than set
the odin is more appealing w/ the idea of 3DS support but since it doesn’t have it atm it’s falling off my radar
I love my aya neo it’s perfect imo
My personal set of handhelds is my 2DS for 3DS and original DS games, my PS Vita for PS1, PSP, and Vita games, and the RP2+ for the rest of the emulation up to Dreamcast.
And then I have Retroarch on my Xbox if I ever wanna play some Gamecube, PS2, and Wii.
i got my rp2 about two month ago and i loved it. with the android and the touchscreen, it was a breeze to get everything up and running since i had used my phone for emulation before it. it is amazing for all the 4:3 console emulation (n64/dreamcast and below). ds works well if mainly one screen is used, and psp does ok, but i was a bit disappointed since the 16:9 ratio just made it too small for my liking. but for everything else, it runs it perfectly and it is a joy to play on it since the buttons all feel good, and the only real negative being both joysticks and no L3/R3, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me. and since it's android based, you get install stuff like am2r or stardew valley. i also printed two holders/cases for it.
in the end, i traded it for my friend's powkiddy rgb10 since he wanted to do psp emulation. and oh boy, going from the rp2 to the rgb10, the rgb10 feels worse every category. poor performance, awful shoulders, one analog stick, worse dpad, clunky software, no touch, no wifi. it felt so awful that i decided to instead get a phone/controller since i knew the rgb10 would definitely not do it for having gotten used to the rp2.
You *can* play 3ds/gamecube/ps2 games, turn down resolution and turn on auto frames skip, this will affect gameplay but it will run smoother
*That add* Are we witnessing the peak of bobception?
Great video, as always!
I only just subbed after seeing the ad. No lie. Bravo sir. Bravo.
I typically skip in-video sponsorships. But seeing him sitting on the couch holding a small Tv with the apple logo on it caught my attention. Then at the end of the sponsorship I immediately regretted everything….
I was lucky enough to be amongst one of the first release waves so I've had mine for a few months now I think, and coming from the original RP2 I was blown away by the performance increases. My old one has shifted kinda to just NES and Gameboy/Advance emulation, just simple stuff that isn't too taxing, and the RP2+ has gotten the 3D systems it's capable of on it, but I mainly use it for N64 emulation since that's the first console I ever had and it's sweet as hell playing N64 games on a form factor like it.
Intro song really brought me back to the SNES days when I was a wee young lad and wanted to blow my brains out when I had to play another water level
I bought my Retroid Pocket 2 last year, and was surprised that I got it only after a week after purchasing it. As someone that grew up with the PS1 and Genesis, it was and is a perfect device for me. That being said, I'm currently on the waiting list for the Steam Deck and I'm curious if it'd even be worth my time to buy a new emulator system or just wait for my Steam Deck.
Got mine a month ago and enjoy every bit of it. Currently playing Shenmue again, that runs as if I'm playing it on DC. I also own a RP2 but only used it for a couple of days. Didn't run that great and the lack of a touchscreen was unforgivable. It just ruined the experience of a device I want to pick up and play without having to do a workaround every time.
RP2+ is great!
I wasn't ready for the Bob-Nip

I think its worth just wanting to get the odin for myself. That’s because I want to run gamecube games and some android games but this seems like a good option for older systems.
I picked one of these up and have been playing Goldeneye 64 nonstop -- this thing is super light, great battery, easy to throw in a blazer pocket. Worth it for that reason alone for me.
I still wanna hold out for an Odin someday. But this looks sweet.
