How to service Eberspacher Airtronic D2 Diesel heater maintenance, repair, Chinese heater is identic

  • Is your diesel heater smoking? Start-ups are intermittent? Does the heater sometimes start and sometimes just smoke is coming out from the exhaust?
    Well then I have some bad news for you. Your heater needs to be serviced, but don't worry, it is easier than you think. All you need is some basic tools, some cheap spare parts and a little determination.
    This is something that anyone can do and it is the first step that any workshop would do.
    If you are still having problems after this, maybe it is time you look for a workshop but in most cases the heater will work and you are set for another heating season.
    This guide also applies to the clones from China, Chinese diesel heaters with 2 or 5 kW heating power.
    In this video I will be servicing an Eberspacher Airtronic D2 heater with a plugged breather hole as i have never seen before.

    This is hands down the best video that I've seen so far pertaining to Espar maintenance and diagnosis.
    I was able to completely disassemble it and service the entire unit with confidence because of your instructions.
    I reinstalled it and it works great! I also changed the fuel filter near the pump.
    Thank you so much. This gives me the confidence to continue lifelong learning about my equipment and how to maintain it.

    Hi, I'd like to thank you for you video. My D2 was just smoking. Your video showed me how easy it was to disassemble and my problem was identical to this one. The breather hole was gummed up and poking a pick from the inside where the igniter and screen go wouldn't clear it enough. A little bit of time, a new gasket and a can of brake cleaner later my D2 is running like new.

    Great vid, I paid out for a Maxspeedingrod 2kw obviously a little more than you get on the bay. From day one there was a loud burner sound like a buzzing or whine, this apparent noise could be heard through the air intake/exhaust. I pulled it apart just like this vid (I have done many before) and considering it was a known brand I was shocked the gasket was missing on the burner chamber and the burner itself had been welded offset so the flame was firing against the edge of tube. If you turned the burner upside down and sat it on the table the burner tube was offset about 3 degrees off. Now I knew my problem, but this was dangerous for me as exhaust gasses could have leaked out. I sent a huge complaint to them as this was clearly a return at some point and then resold. So still waiting for a reply and it's thanks to this vid and the others I had worked on that convinced me that this was a faulty unit 100%.

    Huh. This gave me a good insight how Eberpacher works. I have a old factory fitted on my car that just smokes and shuts down. I hear the pump "tick tick noise" so i think its clogged. Thanks

    Great video. My Espar S2 D2 L is blowing fumes during shutdown and I've done all the installation fixes, sent unit to Espar service and said everthing was fine, got it back and it seemed good for the first two weeks and then started smelling fumes again from the cabin vent and it got stronger and stronger indicating maybe a seal was breaking more loose. It's most strongest during shutdown maybe 30 seconds before it's about finish cooldown and stop. I took it apart and can see stains that show it's leaking at the glow plug. I have a hard time believing that air can't easily leak from the glow plug gasket or especially the fuel line gasket as the top of it is only mating with the chamber gasket. I don't know how much pressure the blower chamber creates but I feel like it's fairly easy for air to get past that part of the fuel line gasket when it's just two rubbers pressing together. The new Espar uses rubber gaskets for the blower chamber not the flat metal with some coating you mentioned. Also the mounting gasket is most suspect at the air intake and fuel line side as the fumes can just flow right up through that gap around the intake. I 'm not sure if the cabin vent will create a vacuum sucking fumes from outside up or if there is possitive pressure pushing heated air out, I'm guessin maybe a vacuum, what do you think? I'm waiting for parts and going to see if my maintenance and repair will fix it as I'm afraid sending it back they will not do a good enough job again, I don't think they even replaced my cracked burer gasket. The threading on the glow plug always seems to get dirty, I suppose it doesn't created a seal? Only seals at the top tapered end of the plug to the hole, is that correct?

      I have made a video of how the exhaust gases could get into the cabin. It is normal for the heater to release some smoke at shutdown. The seal from the fuel pipe is pretty good so normally it should not be possible for gases to escape, you should also chech the glow plug grommet. Sealing of the glow is just the conical metal, the cracked burner seal does not cause fumes to get in. If possible I would extend the exhaust so it gets out from under the vehicle so gas pockets cannot accumulate under. If the heater is recycling inside air it shouldn't make a vacuum.

    Felicitări pentru acest video explicit, o lucrare făcută cu rabdare într-un mod profesionist. Am același model, aș vrea să știu ce setări pot să fac în menu, am intrat cu apăsare lungă pe săgeti, pare că la linia "14" se face reset, dar celelalte linii 1_1, 1_2, 1-3 etc, nu știu ce reprezintă.     So the heater has no intake air filter? I think low voltage is more likely the problem, the glow plug is not hot enough if the voltage runs low.

    as dori sa te intreb,care este rolul gaurii acelea mici de pe corpul camerii de ardere in zona unde se infileteaza bujia?
    am mai multe ipoteze in cap ,dar nu pot sa mi dau seama fiindca ma gandesc ca marea majoritate a aerului necesar pt ardere vine prin fantele alea din capul camerei de ardere.

      Este pentru a distribui motorina în mod egal în jurul bujiei și vaporizare. Într-adevăr aerul pentru ardere vine pe mijlocul camerei de ardere.

      @@DIYHelper am inteles,am si eu un eberspacher d2 care merge la putere mare ok, dar se stinge cum intra in modul de putere mica, precizez ca e montat in cel mai prost mod posibil,in spatele scaunelor,iar caldura o sufla direct in zona aia ,direct in termostat .
      am dedus din tutorialele tale foarte ok ca ar fi camera de ardere , am scos sita mica de la conducta de motorina, nu era foarte murdara ,dar cred ca vizual nu poti face o apreciere .de asemenea in interiorul camerei am vazut ca exista depuneri pe meshul ala ,insa nu substantiale . crezi ca daca iau doar sita noua si garnitura si il montez ,am vreo sansa sa mai trag de ea iarna asta,ca am vazut ca o metoda realista de a curata interiorul camerei nu prea exista?

      Pai as încerca cu sita schimbata înainte de cameră. Sita are cam 5 straturi deci e greu apreciat cât de curata este

      You can connect Easystart Select on blu/white wire and make a bridge between brown/white and grey/red. Brown to brown and red to red.

    If it’s really coked up you will struggle getting the fuel vaporiser/screen out. I ended up with a strip down as in this excellent video

    My espar bar worked fine for about 4 years then it starting smoking then stopped I watched a few videos (not yours) then I rebuilt it new gaskets cleaned every new glow pin new screen
    It worked great about a week did same thing Carboned up so I cleaned replaced gaskets again and it stopped again last night which is about 10 days later again I looked up the exhaust pipe with scope its full of carbon again any ideas what else to try

      This means that the mixture of fuel and air is not optimal. You should check the intake and exhaust pipe for any obstructions, and ultimately it could be a faulty fuel pump that is delivering to much fuel. Check the positioning of the pump, it should be between 15 and 35 degrees angle pointing upwards (the end that goes to the heater)

    Salutare! Felicitări pentru inițiativă și clipurile din canal! Și D2-ul meu a ajuns la pragul de 1500 ore. Încă se comportă foarte bine, nu am avut probleme. A fost cumpărat și montat de nou în noiembrie 2021. Am început documentarea și va urma să comand piesele de schimb pentru 2000h. Mă voi ocupa personal de schimbul lor. Este nevoie de diagnoză neapărat? Este nevoie să îl programez într-un fel după schimbul pieselor sau pot face din meniul de workshop din EasyStart Pro? Mulțumesc mult pentru tot! Spor în toate!

      Salut, in mod normal nu ai nevoie de nimic altceva decât de piese. Eventual poți activa maintenance interval sa îți aducă aminte peste N ore de revizie. Încălzitoarele sunt declarate "fără mentenanță" de către fabricant dar nu strica o verificare sezonala.

    in your answer there is no yellow.

      The heater harness must have blu/white, red/grey and brown/white. Try to find them

    can I used Diesel Fuel, Supplement/Cetane Boost in my heater fuel to make it burn cleaner , keep it cleaner?

      Normally it is not recommended to use additives just because it is not tested and it is not known what remains in the burner after burning them. It could be that they cause more bad than good. Run your heater at full speed for an hour weekly and this will help the burner to clean itself. I recommend doing a maintenance yearly before the heating season.

      A good point, but if they change the air intake position it can make a lot of difference. For now it didn't come back.

      I guess you mean Airtronic D2 24V, in this case if it's the universal one, the part number for the pump is 224518010000. I used Easystart Select as a controller in this video.

    After taking mine out for for service I cant get mine to start or get the fan to even start. Just wondering what I did wrong. All plugs are in the proper places.

      @@DIYHelper The 3 dial type. I ordered another glow plug but that might not solve the problem. If that doesn't work I'll just pay for the diagnostic I guess

      From my experience if the fan doesn't move at all, even for a very short time, that is the problem. Best to do a diagnosis anyway.

    A digital eberspaecher order.
    I have the same heater (D4) controlled by a mini regulator and I would like to replace it
    By this digital command.

      The heating capacity, d2 is 2.2 kW, d4 is 4 kW.

    Thanks for the very informative videos sir. My D2 after 4 years of work had the same smoking issues.
    I took it apart, cleaned as much as I could the burning chambers along with the breathing whole. Replaced both gaskets and the plug screen, installed it back on.
    It works for like 5-8 min at a high speed, then suddenly it shuts off, while the body is overheating. Also the blowing fan runs at various speeds.
    I don't know what could be the problem 😕
    Do you have something in mind about why is that ...? 🤔
