My regrets: lots of kids grade supplies. I don’t want to waste money and toss it, but no one needs half-used kids supplies - not even kids. They deserve better 😅
I had a whole tub of "regrets" and student grade art products that I donated to a local nursing home. Their Activity Director was thrilled to get them.
I don't use them either but I do keep a few kids supplies with me if I'm out making art. Sometimes, kids ask to join in. I'm happy to let them use the cheap stuff as I've had expensive supplies ruined in the past.
Maybe a tip for filling your fountain pens: I use a cheap blunt syringe and refill the cartridges with waterproof ink. I don’t really like the converters either, but love my fountain pens. Although still figuring out how to mix them with all the other stuff I love😂
I think I tried the syringe a while back, should try it again. I did get one of the super5 pens that have waterproof ink cartridges but if I didn't use it every day, it got super clogged up. I guess the main thing is that I don't love using fountain pens enough for the maintenance of them and I enjoy using nib pens more.
2:54 I have rarely if ever seen books or sketchbooks that aren't like this, especially if they're hardbound. It supports the structure of the book, it's just how they're bound. I think if you press them down to use them it may compromise the structure but you can choose to take that risk. I usually skip these in sketchbooks just because I don't like messing with them. You'll probably continue to run into that issue if you use hardbound sketchbooks. I don't think I can fault Etchr for that, it does suck when there aren't many pages and two in the front and back are already unusable. It's definitely not for everyone just with the price alone. I think they could make good low(ish) pressure art books instead of true everyday sketchbooks if you do end up with an Etchr.
Totally with you on the Stillman and Birn. I even have trouble buying them because there are too many options! Not a big fan of watercolour pencils either.
Love my Lamy…use it with fine nib and water soluble sepia ink. My fude pen though I'm struggling with. It seems to clog up after a few strokes and I'm forever rinsing it out with no effect other than wasting expensive permanent ink supposedly suitable for fountain pens.
I think the only thing I have actually regretting buying was tombow markers. It takes up more space and is less versatile than watercolor! What was I thinking?!
❤4:44 wow I LOVE your patterns series!- not just individually but being able to glimpse them all in relation to each other! Is there a flipthrough post or something I can see?
I have a couple of etchr sketchbooks and they are so expensive that I’m so reluctant to touch them… luckily they were gifts but that makes it even harder…
Interesting to see what doesn't work for others works great for me 😅 but seriously about the copic multiliner, I didn't use mine in year because I preferred to use a brush pen, and when I came back to them they still work amazingly as they were new!
dont give up on your wc markers. just like all things. the paper is the most important part. the paper needs sizing so that it does not auto absorbed into the fibers of the paper. use some cotton wc paper hot press and see how you go x
@@sketchingtheworldwithkat paper is expensive and i dont have any nice paper either to use i use practice paper still that's the downfall for me with these markers is that for practice i can use any of my cheaper items but for those practice must be on wc paper ( and i have terrible wc paper that works for my sketch book) so yeah if your confident enough in your skills i 100 percent think you will love these markers on some hot press.
I usually use Sakura micron fine liners to ink a water color drawing! I have heard it’s better to use dip pens not fountain pens with water proof ink because waterproof ink can clog up the pen, but it takes a while to get used to dip pens… at least I still make a mess when trying to use dip pens
It takes practice to get a good line with dip pens - you're not alone! I've found dipping, then doing lines i want strong and bold first helps. And bit of mess is always good.
I love your honesty! While we all have our own personal quirks and preferences, its awesome to hear you say something sucks! Gives me fair warning. I struggled with Lamy Safari too, and so many people rave about them?
The watercolour markers are good for travel. You can colour them on a palette and then use them as watercolour paint with a brush and water. And the acrylic markers I use on canvases or acrylic paper. I agree that Etchr is overpriced and just ok at best. Especially in 🇨🇦 dollars!
Just as an FYI - with fountain pens, the waterproof Platinum Carbon Black is available in cartridges, for a great no-fuss drawing experience. I like having a Preppy in my art kit, with a back up cartridge just in case I run out of ink. It's wicked convenient.
That’s a great tip, thanks! My Preppy broke the day after I bought it! I taped it back together but it was never the same. Maybe I need to do a fountain pen revival and clean them all up.
If you still have the fountain pens with you, try using the blunt syringes to refill the cartridges - just wash away the original ink it comes with. I like using R&K SketchInk Lotte and De Atramentis document inks (lots of color choices, I’ve been liking urban grey). Those are tried and tested waterproof, I use them for outlining my sketches before watercoloring on.
U know u can get a sirenge and fill up any ink cartridge without twisting anything :) I know it’s a little thechnical and requires a little creativity but it’s a good practice for the mind of an artist to figure out solutions to some problems : )
I regret buying the cheap watercolor markers that I bought every curated set of only to find out that they are waterbased and have color but they are so not watercolor markers. Haven’t found a single watercolor paper or other sketchbooks that will make them act a teeny tiny bit like watercolor. I even fell into that same trap when their packaging changed. Also regret buying some cheap ecoline type watercolor bottles or how do you call those. The color payout isn’t all that interesting and they bleed on some papers
My recent regret was the Langton daler rowney water Color paper… I hate how it soaks up the Color. I prefer Windsor and newton gummed and my moleskine watercolour books 🤣
The Etchr Sketchbook looks good it me, don't worry about the price, it's the use it gets. Don't be too precious with a sketchbook, just use, it's not your Sunday best book, it's your every day book.
I love your comments on the screen- some are funny, some useful. Good video. Edit: I’m too new to art to have any regrets (regerts?) yet. I expect I will. I absolutely love the art you showed in the sketchbooks you hated.
Biggest regret is the Faber-Castell Polychromos. So much hype, so useless. 😂 I don't like the watercolour sticks either, only bought in one colour. Might chop them into halfpans so I can soak them and use them up as regular watercolour. And fineliners always suck me in but I never get use out of them. But mainly just the Polychromos. Not cheap and such a disappointment.
I’m using Rohrer & Klinger Sketch and regular waterproof ink, which can be used in fountain pens and they are waterproof, and eraserproof. For dip pens I use Winsor and Newton. The brand of ink makes such a huge difference.
My regrets: lots of kids grade supplies. I don’t want to waste money and toss it, but no one needs half-used kids supplies - not even kids. They deserve better 😅
Its hard starting out because you don't know what to buy and don't want to spend too much but sometimes cheap stuff isn't worth it.

I've just never gotten along with the Lamy. Weird that your fude keeps clogging. That must be so frustrating.

They are too long! Also I think they don't last very long for the price.
❤4:44 wow I LOVE your patterns series!- not just individually but being able to glimpse them all in relation to each other! Is there a flipthrough post or something I can see?
I don't. I think I filmed it for an insta story at one point so I'll see if I can find that.
Hey, I found the reel I made of this, showing the full sketchbook -- instagram.com/reel/CeckC9wFxNt/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D
I have a couple of etchr sketchbooks and they are so expensive that I’m so reluctant to touch them… luckily they were gifts but that makes it even harder…
The water color sticks work wonders on better paper n they r much cheaper than the tubes or half pans
Thanks for letting me know. TBH I like the control over paint consistency that tube paints give but I might give the sticks another go.
That dagger brush looks beautiful. I have also found fountain pens to be troublesome, as pretty as they are!

Art supplies are so subjective. And that's amazing about the copic.
Fountain pens with normal ink, can be used with watercolour, but you need to paint first, then ink.
Yeah, i kind of like that style. It always ends up being much looser.

Tomboy markers. There's no system to know what shade of gray you're really gonna get. I've ruined so many paintings 😢 thanks for the video

Posca Pens, Tombow Markers and most definitely the Lamy Fountain pen.

I bought some Distress Crayons. God knows why but yeah I hate them the just really don’t vibe with me 😢. Bummer
