- Let's face it, we all want onboard air, but we all can't have the top of the line ARB onboard air.
So I decided to make my Viair 88P a onboard air platform for my 3rd gen Toyota Tacoma with some extra parts I had laying around my shop. The final product came out better than expected and should make Traveling by Tacoma a lot more fun. Thanks for watching and please comment below if you have any questions or comments. Awesome video! I have a dewalt cordless 20v air compressor which is slow and requires a decent battery to air my 33” tires. This is exactly what I was looking for, for my off roading adventures.

Thanks that’s appreciated . So far so good on this one. I’ve had a few people mention heat and how it would affect the compressor. So far it’s been fine and have checked it after long drives and while warm, not crazy hot. It’s a low cost compressor compared to the ARB anyway, so if it fails it fails. @@TravelingbyTacoma I have the SuperFlow model MV-50. Similar to the one that you have. It had pretty good reviews and has done a good job so far for me. I will “ dry” fit it in. I would send a photo of it but not sure how to do that on UA-cam.

Contemplating hardwiring mine into the Decked ammo can with inline disconnect
Only issue with hardwire is the LED light come one once it’s powered (on my model anyway) it’s been great so far. No issues with engine heat at all works perfectly with my 32” tires. Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting. TbT

I just ordered one of these (viair) after an outback trip with others...lots of flat tire issues, not mine fortunately. My cheapie 12v compressor was obviously not suitable for real world use, it was absolutely worthless. If you are venturing way out, no contact, for hevvins sake have a good way to air up flat tires. Someone on the trip had this same viair compressor. It worked well, solved the problem, but it does get hot in use.
Yeah. It’s a great little compressor. Still under my hood and working well. For the money you can’t beat that little thing. Anything over 32 inch tires though, you may want something stronger.

Clean install. I did something similar with a Viair 300P under the hood of my 4Runner. I wonder why you kept the alligator clips rather than wiring it to the battery?

Wonder about heat also. Their website lists max temp of 150f but underhood temps can approach 400. Be interesting to see if it survives this summer
I’ll definitely let you guys know (via Instagram probably) if it craps out this summer. I’ve done about 4 -5 hours of consistent driving in 80+ degrees so far and it hasn’t been super “hot” right after driving. There aren’t too many hot engine parts right there and it’s gotta get some airflow I’d think. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks for watching. TbT
@@TravelingbyTacoma... The temperature of the engine bay usually rises after you stop because there is no airflow. The compressor might survive the heat for the most part, but I would also be concerned about the ability of the exposed part of the hose to withstand the heat long-term. Also why continue to use the alligator clips vs just using a ring terminal to connect to the battery?...Hmm. Okay I understand.. If you connect to the battery that led light will always be on.
Thanks for watching and commenting. So far I haven’t had any heat issues and I’ve used the compressor a dozen or so times to air up and run our camp shower. If it fails it’s not really an expensive compressor so we’ll see how it goes. I have checked the heat of it after long sustained drives on hot desert trips and I can say the compressor gets far hotter running (airing up) than it ever has under the hood from engine heat. Long term the engine heat may break it down but time will tell. As far as the clips ... we camp alone mostly and I just feel better with being able to disconnect any non factory draw on the battery. Probably over thinking it, but it works for me. Stay safe out there. TbT
I think i would have liked it morewithout the music.. or make the music 1/2 the volume. If i turn it down then i cant hear you, and I want to hear you. Nice job and fab work.. i may take this idea in the spring and mount mine to free up some room in my rear storage box. Nice job !
Haha. Yeah. I think I was editing on my iPad back then…I think my volumes and editing is a bit better now using premiere pro. That compressor is still fine and works perfectly well under the hood. No issues at all with heat…other than when using it. That little head gets smoking hot. Be careful lol. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
@@TravelingbyTacoma I agree.. used mine two weeks ago, to go from 25 to 38 psi on 4 tires. not a big deal but it got hot. I did not dare to put it back in the bag, just propped it on an aluminum rail my bike mount in the back of suv. So i'd like to mount it because after a longer use, it could cool and not touch anything. it's not on my list thanks.. I can fab something similar it will be great :- ) btw stumbled on the video, didnt even realize it was a year old LOL
Can you still get the fuse box cover off with the compressor installed?
You can ...it’s kinda a pain, but I use the compressor far more than ever getting into the fuse box (knock on wood). It’s a bit of a trade off I guess. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe out there. TbT.
Hi. Any problem with the heat? Dirt? I emailed Viair and they recommended not to install. Thoughts?
I thought about that too, but it’s not a super expensive compressor so it was worth the risk. I emailed them too and asked about a quick connect for the permanently fixed hose and they said they wouldn’t recommend cutting the hose... I don’t think they recommend anything but standard use for warranty issues. It gets warm, but not hot under there...no warmer/hotter that a long use of the actual compressor. After a super long off-road trip I’ll blow it out with an air hose, but you could always throw a small stuff sack over it to keep the dust off. Thanks for watching and commenting. What size screw fit in the engine bay where u mount the base?
I’m not exactly sure. I think I used what I had laying around at the time. Definitely a metric thread. Sorry I don’t have the specs. Try the Tacomaworld website they might have the specs. Good luck and thanks for watching. TbT.
are you able to convert the hose to quick release?
You probably could fairly easily. It’s just as easy for me to keep the hose up front and tucked in front of my battery less things to store elsewhere. Been in there for many years now and still going strong. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
Instead of cutting wires and soldering them, Take the wire apart from the clips and cut to length, then re attach shorter wires to the clips.
Yes, that is a good idea. I think my gut was telling me the factory connection to the alligator clips would be better than my re-do and I was pretty sure my solder wire to wire would be solid enough... That is a good suggestion though. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Does the viair 88 has enough power to fill up your tires ?
It does, but I'm only running the 265/75/16 which is almost a 32. I timed airing up on the last trip... aired down to 23-25#s and aired back up to 32/33 #'s in less 10 minutes. Haha no. I made that like 6-7 years ago I think. Just used 1 x 2 pine and some shade cloth from Lowe’s. Screw it all together (glue) and staple the cloth on the back. It just pressure fits in the garage door jamb. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
How long does it take to air up? I'm looking for something decent fast n cheap 😆
I have 32’s …I air down to about 20 -22#’s from 35. Takes 10 to 12 minutes total (all four tires) to get back to 35#’s.

Haha. Yeah. Hopefully not. Not very hard to remove the compressor if I needed to get to the FB. I’ve used the compressor a hundred times and haven’t had to change a fuse yet, so I’ll cross that bridge when it comes. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
Those zip ties will melt when the compressor gets hot, and they to get extremely hot.
It’s been in there 7 months, used dozens of times in the the hot desert, no issues. Long hot road trips driving for hours, nothing - no issues from use or engine heat. Thanks for watching. TbT
@@TravelingbyTacoma love the vid! I want to do this to my Silverado spare battery compartment. Any issues with the Viair overheating when in use while it's in the engine bay? I have the 400p for my 35" tires.
None. It gets a million times hotter when it’s running (airing up) then after a long drive. That being said, long term engine heat could add some wear I guess, but it I’ve touched it after long 100+ mile drives in hot weather and it’s not hot it is really warm. Good luck. TbT.

They sell these plates on eBay for under 10 bucks…also to hot in the engine bay For that pump
It’s been in there for a year and zero issues so far. Not too hot yet. My plate was free and I enjoy building my own things when I can. I just recently drove 3500 miles in 90- 100 degree weather over 2 weeks and the pump never failed or got hot from the engine. It gets way hotter when using than it ever does from engine heat. 🤙🏼

I'm not seeing the benefits from this project. If you decided not to mount that compressor in the engine bay, you could move it from one vehicle to another, you could keep it safe from dust and water and extreme temps. The process of using it hasn't changed at all, you still pop the hood, still connect the clips, still use the fixed hose.
You could exchange the clips for a solid connection to the battery, put a switch in line to turn it on and off from the cab, connect the hose to a tank towards the back of the truck, use a quick connect on the tank.
Yeah all good points. But it’s now in a fixed location and takes up zero room in my cab or bed. I only have one vehicle so taking to another one is moot. If I need to use it in my drive way it’s no different than if it was in its bag in the garage. If I’m out exploring and need to air up/down all I do is pop the hood and go. I don’t need to unpack things to get to my compressor. Also if someone needs air and they don’t have it I just pull up along side and they can use my air. Look I’m not claiming this is the answer to everyone’s needs, just a cool project I did to make my life easier out of the trail. Take for it what you like. Stay safe out there. TbT
Because this is way more badass then taking a compressor out of a bag in your bed and plugging it in
