Hey guys you gotta come back!!!! Southside we got you! Everything from Harold’s Chicken to old fashioned donuts ( both black owned) gotta get to Hyde Park , food art history music and still blocks from Lake Michigan. Please come back soon!!
I was looking for soul food… I love a soul food spot in every city… let me search that exclusively.. you guys have some awesome videos.. I’m headed there in a few days and your videos have shown me a lot. Thanks so much
Oh that’s awesome news we are so happy we could help! We hope you enjoy your trip in August…and let us know what you think of the deep dish and the donuts 🍩. Thanks so much for watching 😎
Oh that is so awesome! Happy early birthday to him! 🎂. We are happy we could be helpful to you all for your upcoming trip. Yes, that Too Good to Go app is definitely a game changer 😉. You are so very welcome and happy travels. 🫶🏽💕
Oh wow we hope you have a wonderful time next week. We are delighted that you found value in our videos. Let us know what places you end up trying while in the Windy City 😏☺️
Some of these places are not even *near* the Loop! You want Loop? Try Luke's Pizza and Sandwiches on the south side of Jackson Street, one or two blocks east of Sears/Willis Tower, I forget exactly which. Good pizza slices, burgers and chicken sandwiches, some Italian entrees. In fact, the only place I know of in the central downtown area, currently, for traditional slices.
And we explained the ones that were NOT near the Loop 😌. Thanks for sharing your favorites with us, as we are always down to try new spots. Have a great week!
Born and raised I have lived here my entire life. Stan Donuts I don’t know who decided this is a tourist trap but that’s what it is. Chicagoans don’t eat Stan’s donuts. Do Rite is one of the best donuts we’ve ever had definitely rated top notch!
We definitely plan on coming back and going to the South side. We didn’t have a rental car on this trip so we didn’t want to pay for all the Uber fees 🤣
Yeah, Stan's Donuts always disappoints. They often over-fry their donuts, giving them a bitter taste. They are also a complete rip-off. Almost all the donuts are in one of the higher price tiers. And what kind of donut place has price tiers in the first place?!? Better that you stick with Do-Rite Donuts, which are much superior, with better sandwiches and better prices as well (no, I do not work there).
Donuts and price tiers should not go together right 😉. Thanks for letting us know. If you have any other recommendations please do share…especially donuts 🍩
Sort of…When you download the app your put in the city you are interested in. It will show all of the restaurants/businesses participating in the program and what options are available. So for example, it won’t say the exact meal you will be receiving but it will say something like “Pastry” if at a donut/coffee shop , or “3 sides and meat” if a restaurant. It helps you have at least a ballpark idea of what u will get if you select to pick it up. Then you just go pick it up within the time provided to you. 🤗
Chicago native here. Love the video. We have so much good food. One thing I noticed is that aloha wagon is not near midway. Its on the pinkline at western and midway is the orange line end of line. If you come back I recommend going to ricobennes and getting the chicken parm sandwich. Atardecer Acapulqueño has really good mexican breakfast. My family has been taking me there since I was born. Mannys is a great deli in the south loop area. They have wonderful rubens and potato pancake. You can also not go wrong with harolds chicken. Its a classic. Garrets is great. Every Christmas my dad would bring home a bucket of the mix. Chiu Quon Bakery is a so cheep and so good. It is a chinese bakery that is cash only. My girlfriend and I will go in with 10 dollars cash and come out with the perfect amount of food for a picnic. Its one of our go to cheep date nights. We take the buns and walk to ping tom park. I am glad you enjoyed the city. I love this place so much. A big part of my heart lives here and will continue even if I leave.
@derricksm We responded to your comment we didn’t delete it….not sure what happened. We thought your comment was funny so definitely nothing to delete.
Hmmm we’ve never heard of the Um app either 🤷🏾♀️ . Not sure if you were looking for the app we used in this video or not BUT..We did mention the “Too Good To Go” App in this video where you can get discounted food in major cities to help prevent food waste. We highly recommend it as we’ve used it several times. Thanks for watching and happy eating 😉
@@InspiredbyRR I found what I needed. Thsnk you for your concern. I enjoyed your video. We are on the way to Chicago right now and will make use of it.
Sorry, but I think your choice of spots to hit overall was poor. While you can't say it on air, I'm sure your inner thoughts were: not that great and overpriced. You need some assistance next time you come to Chicago.
Definitely wouldn’t recommend a place we didn’t like but we appreciate the feedback. If you have recommendations for us please share and we will add them to our list when we return. 😌
@@InspiredbyRR Let me give it some thought. Not sure I can accommodate your ranch dressing on pizza fetish, lol. But I have lots of ideas. Will post shortly. (P.S. Is the ranch on pizza from Papa John's? I've lived in the south and that's the pizza that I recall offering ranch. If you have the right pizza, you won't want ranch.)
@ 😉 I have tried it….not bad, but it interferes with the other flavors on a really tasty pizza. I’ll make some suggestions tomorrow. You two make a nice couple.
@@InspiredbyRR Just wanted to get back to you with a few suggestions. Pizza: If you are coming in via Midway and renting a car, I'd recommend Vito and Nick's Pizza for authentic tavern pizza (~15 minutes from Midway). Downtown for thin crust pizza (a bit thicker, but still thin), I highly, highly recommend Pizano's Pizza specifically at their Gold Coast location on N. State St. Supposedly this was Oprah's favorite delivery restaurant for thin crust pizza. They have other locations, but the pizza quality is not as consistent in my opinion. Personally I'd go here over Vito and Nick's for the pizza and old school ambience. BBQ: I highly recommend Smoque BBQ on N. Pulaski (25 min drive from downtown; also accessible by L train; worth it). Skip the sides except for the addictive french fries. I recommend the ribs, chicken and brisket. Smoque is also BYOB which also cuts down cost. Skip Green Street Smoked Meats on Randolph. It can really add up in price, and it's difficult to navigate with just two adults and a child. There are some other BBQ places downtown, but IMO the best places are to be found outside of downtown. Note: while there are some very good bbq places on the south side, you do need to do your homework, especially with child, to make sure that you will not be traveling through any dangerous areas to get there. If you do that, you'll be fine, and the south side does have some of the best bbq as well as many other excellent restaurants. Italian Beef: everyone visiting Chgo must try this fantastic, messy sandwich. Downtown in Little Italy, I recommend Al's #1 Italian Beef on Taylor St. or Carm's Beef on W. Polk St. Al's has a few other locations, but they are not as good as at the original on Taylor. In the summer, make sure to stop at Mario's Lemonade (Italian ice) on Taylor St. across from Al's. Carm's also makes their own Italian ice. If Al's doesn't look as convenient with child, head to Carm's which is closeby and may have more seating. Right downtown, Luke's Italian beef on W. Jackson St. is very good for Italian beef as well (plus a Chicago hot dog). When ordering Italian beef, make sure to ask for "extra dip" (trust me) and whether you want sweet bell peppers, hot giardiniera or both "sweet and hot". You will need extra napkins for sure when eating a dipped Italian beef. Gyros Pita Sandwich: I highly recommend Zeus Restaurant on W. Jackson St., in Greek Town about a mile west of Luke's. It is inexpensive and really good. You must try the Gyros, either the pita sandwich or the "Gyros plate" which is a container of gyros, onions, tomatoes, tzatziki sauce, pita bread, fries plus a Greek salad. Most people take out, but there are some tables. I couldn't find a website, but they are still in business and likely will be as they do a brisk business. This is just a fast food joint. But the gyros is fantastic, and if you have never had it, you are in for a treat. Old School Italian Restaurant: I highly, highly recommend La Scarola at 721 W. Grand Ave. To keep your bill down: skip the appetizers; order house salads or share a more expensive salad; limit your alcohol. IMO skip traditional red sauce pasta dishes (including the ravioli/baked ravioli and spaghetti) and instead go for the dishes with wine, garlic, vodka sauce or a mix of vegetables. The risotto is wonderful (and I'm not a big risotto person). I recommend....... starting with the highest: Salmon Mondelli (includes risotto); Bertucci Veal (fantastic and includes side of risotto); Mandera Pasta; Chicken Pasquinelli ; Mandera Pasta; Penne with Vodka; Chicken Vesuvio Pasta; Lorenzo's Pasta; Meat or Cheese Lasagna; and Chicken a la Man Cow. You can read about each dish on their website with pricing. Important: call in advance for a reservation time asking for a reservation right when they open to avoid the lively crowd as much as possible. Ask for the front window table and thank me later. This is a very popular smaller restaurant, and they move a lot of people so do not be surprised or put off if they expect you to leave after an hour depending on how crowded they are. It is well worth the visit. Congrats on the birth of your child. I hope you can make it back to Chicago sometime. Print out or save these recommendations as there are some good ones here....:) Good luck!
