🌌 Welcome back to TrekWorld! Today, Jim dives into a unique resource for Star Trek comic book enthusiasts: Files Magazine. This publication, with contributions from Eddie Edward Gross and John Peel, takes an unusual approach by focusing on the Marvel series authorized after Star Trek: The Motion Picture, rather than the Gold Key series.
📘 Marvel's Star Trek comics had a unique constraint-they could only use elements directly from the movie. This limitation created some interesting storytelling choices and distinct covers, which we'll explore in this video. The decision to start with the Marvel series instead of Gold Key had significant implications, including the unfortunate reality that subsequent volumes of this series were never produced.
🖼️ If you have any rare photos or documents related to Star Trek comics, we'd love to feature them! Please send them to chimp@treck-world.com or submit them via our website at submit.treck-world.com.
📖 Despite its short run, the Marvel Star Trek comic series holds a special place in the hearts of collectors and fans. From superhero-esque covers to the first graphic novel format, these issues are a fascinating chapter in Star Trek's history. Join us as we take a closer look at some of the most memorable and controversial covers.

Interesting point about the covers mimicking super-hero centric comics! As a long time comic fan, especially Marvel, I had made my peace with covers which almost never, especially in the 60's and 70's, gave an accurate depiction of what was actually in the story for any comic, so the Trek covers did not bother me, but you are correct, they are not very Trek. From a business perspective, the Trek comic was displayed on new stands and drug store comic book racks along with all the super-hero comics, so it does make sense that the Trek covers had to compete for eyeballs with equally fantastic super-hero style art if they hoped for any buyers among the comic book fans who may not have been Trek fans. In today's extremely specialized comic world, Trek can look a lot more like Trek, but in 1979/1980, comics demanded everyone, including Spock, have the muscles of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Was this the demand of the consumer or the perception of the demand of the consumer by industry management? If Spock did not have muscles on the cover, would the comic have sold as well as it did, or better, or worse? These are the questions I would like to as the Guardian of Forever.

I have an entire run of the original Marvel series and both DC runs. The first DC run is incredible. Re-read a few times now. I have a few of the Gold Key collections as well. The art is amazing in those.

I have The Motion Picture comic in near mint condition. I found it in a thrift shop -- a rare find in such a place. I couldn't believe it was there and had almost no flaws!
