I became a Christian because of this book so I can testify that, even if it's not a literal translation, the biblical truths aren't compromised and God has used/is using this book to call people to him. Don't underestimate the variety of tools that God uses to connect to us. It's about unity, not uniformity.
Read the "Our Father" prayer. Compare The Message version to something like the Amplified, or even the King James; you'll probably think differently. God bless your walk in Christ.
@@sashadefreitas2546 at one point in his version of that prayer, it says "as above, so below" instead of "on Earth, as it is in heaven". The former phrase has nothing to do with the Bible; it's actually part of the emerald tablets I believe. Also, at the very end, instead of simply sealing the prayer with "Amen", he says "yes, yes, yes", which doesn't actually signify that the prayer has been sealed with belief. There are commentaries that explain the scriptures better than he can translate it.
@@sashadefreitas2546 No-one according to the True Bible is to add or takeaway anything from it. The Bible is Holy and there are many translations n versions other than "message" which anyone can read n understand if KJV is too hard. Fear God.
Peterson wrote most of the Message when he planted a new church in Maryland. People couldn't understand the KJV and so he wrote these down to help people start their journey with scripture. He has never said to replace the Bible with the Message. In fact, often he says to study other translations and versions. He wrote this to get people who have never picked up the Bible, or get overwhelmed by the archaic language of the KJV or other translations, a starting point. I think the more people who read this book, the better. Wish some of that was said in this video.
That attitude is what stops a lot of people from coming to Jesus. He met people where they were, he didn't say if you are stupid, you can't be my disciple, or only "smart" people are welcome to follow me. People learn at different speeds. Many people have come to know Jesus because of the Message, and I think that is awesome. As they continue to learn and become a "smarter" disciple they can begin studying other versions and grow in their faith. I see nothing wrong with that.
In this crowded world of Bible versions, Eugene Peterson's blend of accurate scholarship and vivid idiom make this rendering both distinctive and distinguished. The Message catches the logical flow, personal energy, and imaginative overtones of the original very well indeed. It's a landmark and a triumph. Don't miss it!"- J.I. PACKER, AUTHOR OF KNOWING GOD

Paraphrase helps people understand the difficult english in the kjv. NLT is now a translation but it used to be the living bible paraphrase. Seventh day adventist Jack J Blanco has a paraphrase called Clear Word.
Every translation of the Bible you can get your hands on today has been altered by many jots and tittles. A message does no good if the listener can't understand it. What you're really saying is it doesn't feel good to your traditional beliefs and customs. Someone from India trying to read an American book word for word wouldn't understand it but an American that speaks that person's native language can translate and paraphrase what the book means for that person to understand. Some semitic things don't translate in a fool proof way to English. The exact words aren't the same but the message is. The jots and tittles was supposed to be for the law. Meaning don't add laws and don't take laws away. It doesn't mean don't make it readable.
@Brittany Barnes this is the best comment I have read here. You could not be more correct. A message is only as effective as it is understood. The Holy Spirit is SUPREME and He can move a heart towards Jesus by any translation. Personal preference is just that, and everyone has a right to choose.
the diff is that he takes it literally, i suppose that's his job/prerogative thus bias; yet those words are obviously a lot more fluid/poetic as an allegory -- a 2-edged weapon, can both be misread by some, and help open your heart chakra
In all seriousness, I thank God for the KJV. I'm not fanatical like that but, you know what you have with AV, and it will not have "updates" to suit the blowing winds of culture. Amen.

One of the demons told her that he wrote the Message Bible. I am so sorry that she took her life and also the lives of her two precious dogs.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. The more vague it gets, the further it moves from the accurate truth. I don't understand why there's a need for new translations. The ones we have now are clear enough and if anyone still is not clear, join a bible study, ask a trusted Christian or pastor and ask the Holy Spirit to bring clarity to the scripture
And sadly we have many enablers in the church, whether they are aware or not. Whenever I hear the message version being read out on the radio I just cringe. It's a rip off
I agree, I cant stand reading the KJV. I would rather read the New World Translation because at least I can understand it. That being said I dont see what the problem is with the TLV, HCSB, or the NKJV, these three being my favorite.
James Taylor sir, I’m no member of any cult. I pray you do some research and discover some truth. It is full of new age sayings. Pray for discernment because we need it in these last days. Even the elect can be deceived. All you have to do is have the Holy Spirit living in you and He will prick your heart when something isn’t quite right. Just do some research. Look up who Eugene Peterson is involved with. Look up the Lord’s Prayer and do a word for word line upon line study. And find out where the saying as above so below comes from.
Haha thanks so much for your review. I’m Catholic but was looking at getting this Bible just because I thought it might be interesting to see how much ‘easier’ to understand and get a feel of God’s ideas for. Having now listened to you actually reading parts aloud I can hear how ridiculous it sounds. I was half expecting you to quote Nicodemus telling Jesus ‘Dude cut me some slack with all that baby-Momma reborn drama’ lol
I remember buying The Message at a Christian book store back in 2010. I use a gift card on it which brought the price down to $6.66. The cashier looked totally freaked.
I stick with the King James as my main Bible. And I use the Amplified along with it as a study Bible. I just purchased this one as an extra one to read to maybe get a different perspective when studying from the others. I would not give this to a new Christian as a first Bible.
I don't think the Message Bible does not contain a good translation of I Timothy 3:16 and you can't find the 1 John 5:7 am I correct because I have not open one.
I think the Message exemplifies the idea of a translation being a commentary, or an explanation of the Biblical Text. I prefer the KJV, but I often get bored by it, so I have a large collection of other translations. Your example of Death Valley for "The Valley of Death" is a good one. I think the Psalmist is literally referring to a garbage dump, but I forget... It's not a Wadi (dry river bed), or a desert, I don't think... But your second example nails it... This Peterson guy does not really care if his commentary is correct... Anyways, I was trying (in vain) to read "The Message" along of audio of the KJV, and kept getting lost. There is not a lot of correspondence... IMHO

Your review of this Bible tells me a lot about you. I’ve read the Bible cover to cover 3 times using NASB,NKJV,and NIV. And now have found a joy listening to those versions as I read along and listen in the “YouVersion” Bible app. You read Psalm 23 here in the message. I have enough background to totally understand it (poetically) because I am familiar with the other translations and know this Psalm by heart. Do You? If you’re all so worried about it being misleading include it in a parallel Bible app where you can get a line by line comparison. As an example include the KJV with The Message in a parallel Bible format and see which version your parishioners prefer.
I’ve maybe read the Bible thru 100 times. Yes in different translations. I don’t think you have a clue about me.
