Yeah, two geniuses blended together in a wonder. Watched MH's Artist profile several times, there were many concert episodes with them together. I simply adore them together.
If someone had played this on a piano, I'd be in awe music-wise, but not technique-wise. But that's not the case. Mr. Manring just layed down some amazing music, and he did it in the most unorthodox of ways. MAJOR respect! :D
My bass teacher was Michales fist teacher! they had 6 or 7 lessons togeather. of course this was back in the 1970's but its still hard to believe! Wait'a go MICHALE! Were all cheering for ya!
+dm T-1000 Yes, of course - no one is liked by everyone (I don't at all understand the reverence given to Jaco, though I recognize his considerable technical expertise.)
cool im glad you made that statement.. im the same.. i think les claypool is bass god, but i know he isnt everybodys cup of tea.

+Droid Assembly .. I think Claypool is great and all, but I will never understand how people could put him anywhere near the level of guys like Manring and Wooten and obviously various other Studio bassists. Claypool's technical ability just doesn't match up. But let's be really here, we are talking about people on the top totem, so while he may not match up to a Manring or Wooten, it isn't far off obviously.
Michael Manring is well known for using detuners on each string and changes tuning in the middle of playing. You can never really tell what tuning he's playing in because it's constantly changing. The tunes that this guy produces out of his instrument. Fantastic stuff!
Manring imho is the most inspiring and inventive player of our time. He is NOT ONLY a virtuoso, he has good taste and surprises with new magical skills on the bass. And he has a natural size ego. Instead of bothering our ears with Malmsteem-like egomaniac-look-at-me-I'm-awesome-and-you're-not crap, he is writing listenable, sweet music. Listen to 'My three moons' or 'I left america' and repent your sins.
5 string bass playing has come a LONG way ! ! ! ! Truly stand out ! It sounds almost like the "STYK" a 10 string electric fretboard that tried to make a come on in the 180s. He plays the 5 strings so well . . . it sounds like that!
This is not only an incredible and unique way of playing the bass, it is also very beautiful. As a bass player myself, I would be more than happy with 100th of Michael's ability!
Small world, spfan97... I'm fairly certain you are talking about Peter Princiotto, who is an excellent bass player in his own right. Peter and I worked together at a music store in the late 1970s. Hopefully, we'll all catch Michael Manring at Jammin' Java in Vienna, VA on Saturday, 28 March.
Somewhere here at youtube I saw a blisteringly savage Larry Graham funk assault. He has this really nice looking white custom Jazz bass and vintage Acoustic amps and he is going hog-wild!
Amazing!!! Gotta love Manring's bass playing...Wooten is awesome, but they are both bass gods. Their styles are very different but both on just about the most amazing skill level ever. My two favorite soloists...(ramble ramble).
I wish some people would let Jaco to rest in peace. If you don`t appreciate what he accomplished in his lifetime that is one thing. You have to appreciate what did for the pereception of the bass guitar. I`ll always have a place in my heart for Jaco, and none of your negative comments will ever change that .
Thanks kamykazzz for your understanding. Well I wrote quite exactly what you suggested to me: That the bass is a lot more than just an accompying instrument: Maybe it was a misunderstanding. I play bass myself and went thru the Pastorius phase etc. I can tell you I love bass and it is important in my life, and I also know quite a lot of the great players. In that sense, I don't think I have to change my mind, if you don't mind :-)
well said -I relate to the music more astutely because I've a bass playing friend. But, the point is don't comment when you are in an arena unfamiliar to you and no no one will be offended by remarks that are displays of non comprehension.
I've met him, he's pretty damn down to earth. He just gets into the music thats all.
hi adam
13 years coment
Without youtube i would not have ever found this kind of music. this is why the internet is great.
Caught Michael Manring and Michael Hedges in a show once. Unforgettable.

Who ever did not like this, SHAME ON YOU! THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!
My bass teacher was Michales fist teacher! they had 6 or 7 lessons togeather. of course this was back in the 1970's but its still hard to believe! Wait'a go MICHALE! Were all cheering for ya!
I went to high school with him but did not know him well. Damn, he's good.
Michael Manring is in a league of his own, no other bassist even comes close to his level of skill.
My word he is amazing. I wish I had one pinkies worth of his talent!
For bassists, Manring is one of the gods, for good reasons.
+brntrssll for "some" bassists you mean
+dm T-1000 Yes, of course - no one is liked by everyone (I don't at all understand the reverence given to Jaco, though I recognize his considerable technical expertise.)

Haha! he is having so much fun playing this.
One of his best pieces imo.

one of the cooler sounding things in the universe.
Manring is the perfect balance between technique and feeling.
I remember having an email conversation with him when I was probably 15; that's a humble musician there.
i love to see someone enjoying what they are playing.
Just one word: GENIUS
Manring imho is the most inspiring and inventive player of our time. He is NOT ONLY a virtuoso, he has good taste and surprises with new magical skills on the bass. And he has a natural size ego. He is playing a 10 string - listen to him check the tuning just at the start...
Michael, you are simply a genius!!! Love you
Amazing. Simply amazing.
Just because some musicians are good doesn't mean others have no place in all the world.
This is not only an incredible and unique way of playing the bass, it is also very beautiful. As a bass player myself, I would be more than happy with 100th of Michael's ability!
Wow! that was absolutely impressive bass work!
that was awesome.
Great Song!
Such a BADASS!...his Tone is so Unique too!
super duper im feelin his passion, good stuff.
He sure can make that bass sing , what an inspiration !
AWESOME.... DUDE....
unique!!!! he is amazing!!!!
holy shit.... amazing!!!
great man so cool!
Can't believe all that comes from one instrument. Amazing.

This is a great song
An Excellent Bass Player!
When I read all the comments, it's hard to believe I'm related to this guy. Good luck on your tours Micheal!
dude--thanks!
Very cool.
never seen this guy play b4, that solo would sound great over a commercial for weekend vacations someplace. unique stlyle.
all these super bass players give me some feeling of new age music and remind me my love for motorhead
Amazing.
Somewhere here at youtube I saw a blisteringly savage Larry Graham funk assault.
He has this really nice looking white custom Jazz bass and vintage Acoustic amps and he is going hog-wild!
Now this is what I call master an instrument!
'speechless'-amazing
GRANDE!
@SuperEnigmation From talkbass forums: "A Morning Star is played on Michael's Zon Legacy Elite 10-string bass. The tuning is Aa Aa Ed Da Ge."
what a bassist!!!
he sometimes makes it sound like a piano.
FANTASTIC MUSIK
This is like hes doing the harp guitar Hedges did in Because its There yet its a very different song. The consistency and clarity are unbelievable.
Muy bueno. Totalmente profesional.
2022 ! SO GOOD ^^
¡Magnífica!
bass in technical perfection
Amazing!!! Gotta love Manring's bass playing...Wooten is awesome, but they are both bass gods. Their styles are very different but both on just about the most amazing skill level ever. My two favorite soloists...(ramble ramble).
i love him... 8O

that's one of the few virtuosos that i have seen who aren't boring
Definately got up 'early' to write this one. Luvvvely jubbly !!
Muito bom... esse cara é otimo.
I gave you thumb up, even if I think it's in the definition of a virtuoso that he is not boring
Thank you!
if you check out his website, i think it lists all of his tunings...
This looks like an ode to his late compandre sir Michael Hedges. They were a wonderful time before Michael's untimely death.
nice man
yo, this isht is crazy, happened less than a mile from my crib. Freight and Salvage bass night.
Insane bass solo...
thats right fucking sweet. beautiful tone
This is much better to listen than watch.
Try Michael Manring Life in the Trees. It was the tune that hooked me and is a style that goes well with coffee and sunrises.
So amazing he makes it look so easy cross between Geddy Lee & Billy Sheehan meets Michael Hedges tapping on bass
very well....................................................
Yes Michael, the same spirit of Hedges is in you... you are his brother major...
WOW
ya me too!
I just like that he uses more then one form. Victor even showed in that bass day video he uses one form for like all this tapping.
When I first saw this i could hardly believe the sound was coming from one person. It's like there's an orchestra behind him.
Love the mood at 2:04 in this one.
buy his album, it's amazing.
WOW Kenny G is now playing bass!
This is probably my 2nd comment & this man makes his bass ring !! Geddy Lee meets Billy Sheehan meets tuck andress
It sounds like a regular 5-string, drop A, up an octave through some kind of Whammy-like effect.
The "Kenny G" of bass...
holy shit look that!... FUCKING AMAZING
i fuckin love this bassist and this song lol
i think its well good
Thanks kamykazzz for your understanding.

maniac!
Wow! Amazing! Anyone has any idea of what tuning this is in??
OMG that does sound like something from spyro! very nice observation :P but this is nice. peacefull

Watch again and pay close attention to his fingers. Every sound you hear can be associated with some visible action -- no looping at all.
It sounds like august rush
Very nice
I want to see him play in a band, because I want to see how we he contributes to a sound with different instruments.
Personally I think this sounds like something from Spyro the Dragon. XD But i'm not complaining. I love that series. :D
Low to high AA (unison) AA (octave) ED (M2) DA (P4) GE (m3)
woah people really have a lot to say about this guy. hes good. :) good for him.
it's not boring at ALL!
I didn't know Hagred could play guitar that good.
Michael Manring - Morning Star
