I heard this for the first time 16 years ago when I was in the sixth grade. This song was one of my very first influences and part of the reason I play the style of guitar that I do to this day. Grateful for the art this man has shared with us all..
Same here! it's been a long time since I first heard it. I think Don Ross was the one who played the background music during the weather report on the Tv back in 2000's. What a musician!
It saddens me deeply to see people not even being able to appreciate such astounding talent. Don Ross is a modern musical pioneer for acoustic guitarr music and deserves WAY more credibility than he gets.
Im 30, i grew up listening to everything blues, bluegrass, gospel, country, R&B, pop, hip hop, electronic, rock, and of course the heaviest of metal.. Although I've seen my share of finger picking, its been nothing quite like this. Myself and my friends thought modern prog rock/metal guitarist started this style&rhythm on acoustics within the last ten years.. we were wrong. 😅 I will say, there are a handful of newer guitarist on here that deserve a listen if you enjoy this..
There should have been an acoustic guitar hero game, and all the bosses were Candyrat titans like Don Ross, Andy Mckee, Calum Graham, Jon Gomm, Mike Dawes, Antoine Dufour, Luca Stricagnoli, etc.
Jesus Christ Understandable but it still doesn't change the fact that the time spent on that game could be used to play a real guitar. You almost make it sound like playing a real guitar isn't enjoyable or fun...
I absolutely agree! It’s Ross’ sense of rhythm that really caught my ear at a time when there were so many guitarists emerging with intricate solo pieces. I forgot about this recording for so long so it is great to come back and enjoy the groove again!
I can vividly remember about 12 years ago maybe when I started playing guitar my dad found out Don Ross was playing at our local theatre (small town seats maybe 200). We had never heard of him so we went and holy shit I was blown away. Not only is the guys playing truly one of a kind but as I remember he’s fucking hilarious. He was telling stories in between songs (because he tunes differently for every one) and the entire audience was in tears.
ive watched this video about 500 times, seriously. i am sure don can play the guitar without actually touching one. he is such a huge motivation and keeps me writing jams deep into the night. dudes hands must be made of some kind of element found on some distant alien planet. don...you are king, my friend.
I will never forget the time I went to a punk Halloween party, and someone got hold of the playlist and put the exact song on. I was drawn immediately. Payed and downloaded the songs off this album and love every second of it. Listened many times hitchhiking, introduced many people to him too. Got to see him live finally in 2015 and had him sign my dads old guitar, what and amazing show between him and Jon Gomm. Unforgettable!!!
This was the first "real" acoustic song I ever heard. Back when I wondered who Michael was... I am coming back to comment on this song after almost 6 years or more from when I heard it first. This was the beginning of a genre that I never knew was going to go so deep. Thanks to this video (and my friend showing me) I now know the great side to this amazing instrument.
James Wilkes I just recently got into Phil's stuff. Left a comment somewhere I think on one of his "Shades of Green" performances saying, "I can't believe it took me this long to look this guy up!"
Seen him backing up Buffy Sainte-Marie on Vancouver Island at about the time of this video. Truly a mind blowing performance. Left the lobby with every CD I could get. Awesome road trip music...
I watched this video about 15 years ago when I was 14 years old, and was considering picking up the guitar, and was blown away by what can be achieved by a single player. 15 years later Don Ross still blows me away.
When I hear this song, and I find myself here sometimes, after month or two, I am here listening this song shaking my head in all directions and thinking how bad ass this song is. It is awsome song, so rythmic, so complex, very hard to play and if you want to play this song you have to put some effort into practicing. It is chanllenge to learn how to play it. For shure among his best songs .
I'm never tired of listening to this song; this particular version is incredibly awesome!! Thanks to Mr. Don Ross for sharing this marvelous music piece, thanks!!
I agree, people like this are infinately more talented than almost every "artist" on MTV today. Back in the 90's, it was a little close but not today.... guys like this are the true musicians of our world
Beyond amazing guitar playing! I am astounded at how many unknown (to most people) great guitar players there are on this planet. I just heard Don Ross for the first time a few minutes ago at the CSAmaker YT channel who was using a Don Ross song for his video about making a Dremel Pantograph! Thankfully he listed the background music credits because many do not do that which is very unfortunate for both the listener & the artist
I heard you for the first time on Pandora and had to run to the computer to find out who you are. Then, plugged into this UA-cam recording of Michael, Michael, Michael (one of my favorite artisits; I mourn his passing still). Wow! You are awesome Mr. Ross!!!
That's what's so goddamned cool about these acoustic virtuosos. Don Ross, Andy McKee, Erik Mongrain, Antoine DuFour, Michael Hedges, et cetera. Such finely- honed senses of rhythm and melody put them all in a league of their own.
Thank you sir, for creating this man who has brought so much joy, love and understanding to other peoples lives. You sons music saved me from some very dark times after returning from Iraq.
Hi, I was with Don last week end for a master class in France with 8 other very lucky guys !!! 4 hours studying Don's style, it was simply amazing!!! And on sunday, DON give a fabulous concert. What a week end !!! By
I think the 98 dislikes are people who were'nt be able to touch this Playingstyle of Guitar or listeners without a heart. I'm glad there are over 5000 People with heart!
Still my number one source of inspiration when I get musician writers block. Such an awesome funky groove, always gets me motivated to get back in the guitar strumming seeing of life
Don Ross, I love everything Candyrat records produce. But you are my all time favourite... I've seen Andy Mckee here in my home town of Sligo Ireland, I'd love to see you and hear you play here in Ireland. We're on the West Coast of Ireland, I have some great contacts here who could organise something with you. Legendary musicians in their own right . We would love to meet, hear, see you come over to us... We'll give you a proper Irish welcome 😁🇮🇪
Don s Ross you are the best !!!he sure can play!!!@ uh Mr Ross how many tuning s do you know ?oh about 58 or so // that was back in 1994 uh Mr Ross must be closer to 100 now
As fine and respectable a homage to Michael Hedges as I could ever imagine. Don Ross is locked in. It's hard to believe how effortless he makes it look.
You know what gets me about this video? There is not NEARLY enough applause at the end! I'd be standing up, whooping, freaking out, going nuts and I'd be expecting everyone else present, who had just experienced a guitar miracle to be doing the same! Genius.
Simply great art, you never get tired of listen to it. Keep it up Ron, real music is so often missing, we need you and the other guys that really understand what music is all about. Greetings from Germany, hope to see you there someday.
Just saw Don and Jimmy Wahlsteen play about 2 hours ago. Don truly has made me appreciate playing guitar all over again. Thank you so much sir, for your contribution to the history of guitar. \m/ \m/
Nobody does this like Don. People might write just as difficult songs to play, people might write just as emotional and technical as Don, but noone can combine it like he does. My fav, might be the best damn guitarist/guitar composer to ever set foot on this earth, permanently ;-)
I have been playing guitar more than on-and-off for over 5 years, and short of focusing on this one song forever, I still feel several years away. Not to mention I'm used to romantic and classical pieces with some baroque here and there, so this isn't even my "style of choice," per se.
I think that this tune is one of the best fingerstyle guitar standards. I hope you agree with me. Because melody is great, bass movements are awesome and some of the harmonics stuff. I don't like using percussion in tunes, but here uses slap harmonics some times and it takes little percussion effect. Thank you, dear Don. You are true musical monstr. You are one of my best fingerstyle guitar inspiration. And reeeeeallly big thanks to Michael Hedges for new generation of solo acoustic guitar musicians, as YOU, Don.
I went to a concert of Don Ross and Brooke Miller in Zwickau (Germany) in May 2012. A master is still an extremely nice guy him in dealing with the guitar and to this. As for the rest he speaks German even quite well.
I heard this for the first time 16 years ago when I was in the sixth grade. This song was one of my very first influences and part of the reason I play the style of guitar that I do to this day. Grateful for the art this man has shared with us all..

Deserves a billion views.
almost 10yrs passed since i first heard this song, still the grooviest motherfucker around
It's been 13 years since I first heard Passion Session. He turned me onto Micheal, and I still like Don the most. I said it!
its been 300million years since the lizard people came to earth
So True, this never get's old, every listen has the same effect, pure brilliance!
It is the definition of groove!!!
Same broo. Ive been listening to this same video for almost 15 years now.
And they dare to say that Hagrid has no magic power.
I think you mean Swagrid.
That’s pretty funny lol
It saddens me deeply to see people not even being able to appreciate such astounding talent. Don Ross is a modern musical pioneer for acoustic guitarr music and deserves WAY more credibility than he gets.
Bro this aged so well all the kids today fingerstyle
Im 30, i grew up listening to everything blues, bluegrass, gospel, country, R&B, pop, hip hop, electronic, rock, and of course the heaviest of metal..

Don Ross should have been the boss you had to defeat in order to with the Guitar Hero video game.
There should have been an acoustic guitar hero game, and all the bosses were Candyrat titans like Don Ross, Andy Mckee, Calum Graham, Jon Gomm, Mike Dawes, Antoine Dufour, Luca Stricagnoli, etc.
Jesus Christ
Why? The time spent playing that stupid game you could actually learn to play a real guitar... Maybe not to their level but still...
gschum1 Some people don't want to play guitar. They just enjoy the game.
Jesus Christ
Understandable but it still doesn't change the fact that the time spent on that game could be used to play a real guitar. You almost make it sound like playing a real guitar isn't enjoyable or fun...
he is boss! love it .. www.savebomb.com/download/?url=ua-cam.com/video/YkidVP0AcQ8/v-deo.html&links=true
Don, your sense of timing and groove is a gift to humanity. Keep uploading, you're making the world a more rhythmic place!
I absolutely agree! It’s Ross’ sense of rhythm that really caught my ear at a time when there were so many guitarists emerging with intricate solo pieces. I forgot about this recording for so long so it is great to come back and enjoy the groove again!
AMEN. ;)

i still come back to watch this every once in a while. what a champion

This tune never gets old. I Remember when came out and come here every 2 years or so. Keep it alive
Mee too!
Not only does he play perfectly, but this original song is just incredibly beautiful. This deserves some more million views!
No greater tribute to Michael. Thank you Don!
Damn...
I was inspired by Phil Keaggy, his songs are great.
James Wilkes I just recently got into Phil's stuff. Left a comment somewhere I think on one of his "Shades of Green" performances saying, "I can't believe it took me this long to look this guy up!"
is the title by any chance referring to Michael Manring?
MultiMK6 No, the late great Michael Hedges
JRQgopro aah..thnx 4 clearing that.. ;)
14 years and this song has been a faithful companion
I get to see this guy live with kaki king at petit jean state park in two days! Such an inspiration for my guitar playing.
Stumbled across this years ago on a random guitar website and it opened my eyes to what you can do with an acoustic
This piece inspired me to learn finger style guitar play. Thanks Mr. Ross!
Seen him backing up Buffy Sainte-Marie on Vancouver Island at about the time of this video. Truly a mind blowing performance.
Left the lobby with every CD I could get. Awesome road trip music...
Love, thank you so much, Don

How'd he ever find this song in his head? Amazing stuff, man! I love hearing music like this!
I could listen to this all day!
Don Ross looked older back then than he does now
haircut bro
Tears to my eyes, all i can say...
Spectacular.

More like Don Boss!
Blown away every time by his playing. He is freakin' unbelievable!
I am loving it!
Very Very Good...!
I love this song! We have this on the CD Narada Guitar 2.
Mike Dominy
cool!
I used to watch you play around the Kawartha area when I was a child, you have always been an inspiration. Cannington missies you Brother!!!
The worst things with Open tunings is to remember in which of them, one of your songs is done ;o)
This is outstanding. Simply marvellous
Weird how no one has said this dude plays his acoustic like a bass guitar. It's fucking brilliant.
That's because he doesn't play it like a bass 😂
You are my favorite musician who play his own music, Don Ross. Thank you, dude.
I agree, people like this are infinately more talented than almost every "artist" on MTV today. Back in the 90's, it was a little close but not today....
guys like this are the true musicians of our world
First time ever hearing of Mike Ross today. I’m blown away. I have no idea why I have never heard of this guy before.
2:56 absolutely no regard for human life. Nasty.

Thanks bro
Muhd Syazani bin Mohd Fadli
Godsend.
I keep coming back🤷♂️an absolute masterclass!
I swear they filmed this video the way they did on purpose in order to keep people from learning to play the song....
I heard you for the first time on Pandora and had to run to the computer to find out who you are. Then, plugged into this UA-cam recording of Michael, Michael, Michael (one of my favorite artisits; I mourn his passing still). Wow! You are awesome Mr. Ross!!!
1:47 - 2:38 Spoke to me on an emotional level.
what did it say?
It said to remember the past and look to the future. ^_^ However, it reminded me of some good memories with some old friends.
That's what's so goddamned cool about these acoustic virtuosos. Don Ross, Andy McKee, Erik Mongrain, Antoine DuFour, Michael Hedges, et cetera. Such finely-

2:08 Best acoustic riff of all time

Was this song about Michael Hedges--just curious.
5kehhn Yes
If I remember correctly, it was written right after Michael’s death
OUTRAGEOUS !!! "There can only be one"....Don Ross!
I know I'm out of my element....but did I hear Toejam & Earl?
Kunobabyx Donny, you're out of your element
Still my number one source of inspiration when I get musician writers block. Such an awesome funky groove, always gets me motivated to get back in the guitar strumming seeing of life
I'm gonna go and burn all my guitars now.
Don't burn them, give them to me.
Or me.
brilliant musician. thanks for posting! Love and peace on earth...

This video is fantastic but after seeing him live twice now i can defintly say this does not even begin to capture how amazing he really is
This is still blowing my mind after 15 fuckin years
You gotta love the ones that you fall in love with on the first play through
Holy shit this is 14 years old!
This is one of my favorite videos of yours. You should recreate a new version of it... See if you still got it 😉
As fine and respectable a homage to Michael Hedges as I could ever imagine. Don Ross is locked in. It's hard to believe how effortless he makes it look.
If there's anybody better than this man, he either sold his soul or has three sets of hands. Wow man pure genius.
You know what gets me about this video? There is not NEARLY enough applause at the end! I'd be standing up, whooping, freaking out, going nuts and I'd be expecting everyone else present, who had just experienced a guitar miracle to be doing the same! Genius.
Listening to this song... I realized that music is the language of sound
Absolutely brilliant! A Masterpiece! :-)
The progenitor of math rock. God I love this song.
Simply great art, you never get tired of listen to it. Keep it up Ron, real music is so often missing, we need you and the other guys that really understand what music is all about.
Greetings from Germany, hope to see you there someday.
It's amazing the guitar talent that's come out of Canada. Great work.
Just superb, Don, a great tribute to Michael Hedges' legacy. Wish he could see you.. and he does so, from guitar heaven, I believe.
I remember ths vid back in the day,,,still awesome...
