Thank you. As vet, retired LEO, worked in schools after retiring from LE, I agree something is wrong in how "society" is treating gun violence. My kids and grandkids grew up safely handling firearms. I am at the end of my days, but worry so much about my grandkids.
I graduated school in 1980 from a small rural school in Oklahoma. I can guarantee you any given day you could visually see at least 10 guns on school property in their trucks. I can also recall a student bringing in his new 30-06 deer rifle to show our shop teacher. We thought nothing about it. As fundraisers we had skeet and turkey shoots ON SCHOOL GROUNDS with faculty participating. Can you tell me why we had 0 mass shootings? In 1979 I actually owned a Colt CAR-15 while in high school along with several 30 round magazines. Our school was not unique, other schools were the same way. Now my grandson cannot point a finger without getting in trouble for gun violence. What has changed? BTW- I know the answers to both questions but apparently most of America does not.

They dont think it's true or even care if its true. They use language to manipulate and control. Once you understand they are fundamentally different than you and they are truly evil you will stop worry about convincing them of your position and realize the only way to deal with them is a complete seperation from them, by whatever means.

I recently picked up a Remington 742 in 30.06, my mom asked me 1 why I needed another gun and 2 what an AR-15 is. Long story short, through FaceTime I was able to show her the two cartridges and explain what little I know about ballistics. My favorite part was teaching her that AR stands for Armalite Rifle, not Assault Rifle.
I have a Remington 742 with an 18" barrel, chambered in .308 ..... It's my favorite deer rifle. It has never failed me, and I bought a couple 10rd mags just for a rainy day. Its a pain in the ass to do a complete tear down, because of all the roll pins in the bolt/firing pin assembly, but it's a flat shootin' gun and every deer I've taken with that gun drops immediately....I'll take a .308 over a 5.56 any day

Excellent. Ive been making the same point using my remington auto loading rifle or pre model 8 in .35 remington. It works flawlessly and has been doing so for 116 years. Even running it with 46 year old ammo. I usually shoot a couple sealed 5 gal buckets full of water with the .35 and the 556. The response i get is usually something like " i cant believe things like that have been around so long or that they still work." Its not new and they aren't going away.
I appreciate you pointing out that the AR15 has been available for over 60 years. My Paternal grandma is pretty anti-gun (Which is ironic since shes the one who got me into Winchesters!) a few years back her and I had a conversation about gun and gun control I mentioned that that she could have bought one when my Dad was a kid in the early 60s. She didnt believe me but when I managed to bring up an ad for Colt SP-1s she realized she was miss informed. It didnt really do much for her point of view over all but she did realize that maybe its not the specific guns and there are other things going on. Love the milk jug comparison. I'd love to see what 351 Win or 401 Win can do against modern ceramic body armor. Speaking of 351, a buddy of mine got one recently from someone and all of his brass cases were modified 7.62x39 brass. Makes me wonder if you could re barrel one for that cartridge
351 Winchester is made from 357 max brass, and can also be made from 5.56 brass. The 401 can be made from 7.62X39 brass. Neither can be barreled to any of the mentioned calibers because the action is too short on the Winchester rifles.
Here's the thing, you ban the guns and what are people hell bent on harming other people going to do? They're going to get creative and use their imagination, thats what! And let me tell you what, when malevolent people start imagining evil, you'd WISH they had just done a simple shooting. What happens when evil decides its easier to make bombs and flamethrowers than grab a rifle? Think it can't happen? It did in Germany in 1964, a man made a homemade flamethrower and killed a bunch of kids! Think a shooting is horrifying? This guy burned children to death alive!
Penetration of body armor is based on frontal area and velocity so probably no significant damage/ penetration. It's how the 5.7 x 28 pistol cartridge @ 28 grains penetrates type II body armor. Of course, bullet design plays into it also. Getting into things like the .50 BMG, it's total energy available and mass/momentum. They have the energy to break the plates and the momentum to continue. Armor vs ballistics is an interesting area of study.

Great presentation Sir, thanks! I have a 1907 .351 WSL and love its simplicity. Had a 1805 .35 but loaned it out and it never came back. Kids today have no place to shoot and after seeing all their TV and movie heros saving the good people from the bad they need to have gun ranges near their homes where they can shoot under supervised conditions. Serious gun owners and collectors are the last people to commit crime because we don't want to lose our privileges. We were taught in 2nd or 3rd grade gov't class that the purpose of criminal law, the criminal code, was to proscribe the punishment for criminal acts or deeds not to prevent the crime! No law ever stopped a law-breaker from breaking a law.
I wish my .401looked as nice as yours! Mine is rather beat up and blue worn, but it still shoots great. Ammo is real hard to find, but I do make my own ammo from 7.62 by 39 brass or majorly modified 303 British brass. I’ve heard you can make them from 35 Remington but I haven’t tried that yet. Anyway, that’s a beautiful rifle and you are 100% correct on your thoughts about the situation in the world right now.

I make this comparison often. I believe the 1907 was the pinnacle of the Winchester Self Loading Rifles. The 351 is ballistically a 357 Maximum, and very effective on deer and bear, something no one should claim for the 5.56 round. These Winchesters features gave birth to the 30 Carbine, which was the gun that changed military minds enough for the 5.56 to be accepted. I would rather fight with the WInchester because I find ARs to be the most awkward guns I own, and as a hunter used to making my shots count, I am not impressed by magazine capacity. The Winchester ergonomics are excellent. The law enforcement use of these WInchesters is storied and impressive. As a retired prison guard I know I would have been very happy to have had the Winchester gun as my duty weapon.
The AR-15 can be had in larger calibers such as the 6x45, .277 Wolverine, 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel, .300 Blackout, .350 Legend, .450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM and .50 Beowolf.
As a fellow southern Oregonian I agree with ya 100 percent. I hope a solution can be found without us losing our rights. Time will tell, I hope my generation (the current ones coming to age) comes to understand the importance of the constitution.

You know Mark my Grandfather carried a Winchester just like that in the same caliber as a deputy sheriff back in the day. I can remember him telling me how he shot into the engine block of a car driven by a criminal and killed the engine. Just because something is old doesn't mean that it's still not effective. I say "mild restoration" because I didn't want to completely erase the "character marks" that it has from years of use. Mine was manufactured in 1915. A big part of the problem is the breakdown of the family unit. The family is the basic building block of civilization. Without strong families, civilization is bound to fail.
You are correct. Having both parents working and/or having one parent out of the picture is a significant contributing factor. Also, pushing God out of schools and other places is another contributing factor.

I see a lot of guntubers, especially older gentleman like yourself who were teachers, coaches, or otherwise involved in our schools. Reid Henrichs, and Hickok45 to name a couple. That's what we need. More fathers at home and more real men in our educational system.

Absolutely on point. My wife and I did the best we could to actually raise a child and make him a productive member of society. We stayed together as a nuclear family. No drugs. The rod was not spared, although it was rare. Now he is a M.A.R.S.O.C. Marine. He's squared away and one of the best men that I know. I feel blessed, and I'm proud of him. I feel a lot of this is broken families and broken souls.

I agree with you on most points 100%. But outlawing high capacity magazines are one of the few laws that can have a meaningful impact. Increasing the complexity of the reload is key to at least slowing down and complicating things for a shooter. And it only takes a very few seconds for people to save themselves or stop the shooter. Amazed by the punch of that .351. Had no idea. Looks like great fun!
You hit the nail on the head , it's how children are being raised today ! I believe it is a breakdown in family structure and basic values , respect and discipline. Combine that with social media , news media making celebrities out of these mass shooters , modern day movies , violent video games , prescription drugs for everything.....the list goes on but it is not a gun issue .
I've got a few Remington model eights which are very similar in performance to that Winchester. I am very much an enthusiast of these old rifles. When you eliminate the impossible, whatever is left must be the answer. We have a broken culture because our American heritage, our culture, has been attacked with the intent to destroy it.
“Of course my new favorite gun is the last one I shot.” Haha! Yeah, I feel that. It’s not even political, though- these guns were market-available for YEARS, way over a century. Laws regarding the stuff has to be made with that context, but they never are.
My dad had a Win 1910, made that first year (1910). ser # 11xx that he used as his 'deer gun' growing up in the UP of Michigan in the 1940s. IIRC, the entire family of WSLs were only produced until the mid 1930s or so, and most companies quit making ammunition for it by the 1960s. I still have a half box of Remington 200gr softpoints... Yes, you can buy ammo from one of the specialty custom shops, but even back 30 years ago it was almost $4/round! Mine's a wall-hanger now...
Great rifles. I own Winchester Model 1905s in .32 WSL and .35 WSL and a Model 1907 in .351 WSL. I do not have a Model 1910. Mine are also standard models, no checkering. The Model 1910 is a hole in my collection. When the .350 Legend was introduced, my thoughts were "Hmmm, seems a lot like the .351 WSL". I am sure the .351 could easily be loaded to match the .350 Legend, but the blowback operated Model 1907 would eventually be damaged by the increased recoil of the additional 100-150 fps of the loading. BTW, the rod charging handle of the series of these rifles was a work-around to the Browning patent for the side charging handle which Remington held at the time. The rod charger and the reciprocating weight in the forend precluded the use of a tube magazine. I also own a Remington Model 81, the updated version of the Model 8 which dates to 1906. Semi-auto, box magazine fed autoloaders are nothing new. Thanks for spending all that time to teach kids!
Very interesting comparison. I like the more conventional and less "tactical" looks of the Winchester. I also feel that its charging method is easier to use, if a bit unusual.

If memory serves the National Guard also ordered the model 1907 for home guard use so they could transfer the more standard rifles to combat roles. I also find it amusing that Winchester came full circle updating the .351 and .401 bringing them back with .350 Legend and .400 Legend

Love the Winchester. I have dozens of arms I’ve collected over decades and decades. I have broad interests regarding firearms and the associated technology. With all that said, I’ve never noticed one of these Winchesters. Must have one! A wonderful video! Thank you.
This video made me very sad for two reasons. 1st I owned a beautiful mod 10 in 351 auto loader that I had to sell,then number2 was a wildcat that I developed years later on a 30 carbine Ruger that I made into a 40 caliber using the 7.62 X 39 blown out to 40 cal using custom RCBS dies and launching a 200 gr XTP Hornady bullet pushing 2350 FPC Then due to my wife getting very sick I put it back to 762x39 and sold it to pay med bills. The only good thing is I still have the barrel and dies should I ever get a chance to do it again. My original thoughts for this was the old 401 autoloader and it turned out to be a stone cold pig and deer killer. Thanks for the memories.

What a beautiful rifle. Caliber reminds me of my new caliber for my ar15 the 450 bushmaster. You just have to love an old school wood and metal gun.

A big part of the problem is the breakdown of the family unit. The family is the basic building block of civilization. Without strong families, civilization is bound to fail.
You are correct. Having both parents working and/or having one parent out of the picture is a significant contributing factor. Also, pushing God out of schools and other places is another contributing factor.

Absolutely on point. My wife and I did the best we could to actually raise a child and make him a productive member of society. We stayed together as a nuclear family. No drugs. The rod was not spared, although it was rare. Now he is a M.A.R.S.O.C. Marine. He's squared away and one of the best men that I know. I feel blessed, and I'm proud of him. I feel a lot of this is broken families and broken souls.

Thanks for another video , spot on With the beautiful rifle and also the social commentary. Kids don’t seem to take any personal accountability for their actions any more. If they can blame someone else for everything they do wrong, then they never learn to do the right thing.

I agree with you on most points 100%. But outlawing high capacity magazines are one of the few laws that can have a meaningful impact. Increasing the complexity of the reload is key to at least slowing down and complicating things for a shooter. And it only takes a very few seconds for people to save themselves or stop the shooter.

I've got a few Remington model eights which are very similar in performance to that Winchester. I am very much an enthusiast of these old rifles. When you eliminate the impossible, whatever is left must be the answer. We have a broken culture because our American heritage, our culture, has been attacked with the intent to destroy it.

It’s not even political, though- these guns were market-available for YEARS, way over a century. Laws regarding the stuff has to be made with that context, but they never are.

My dad had a Win 1910, made that first year (1910). ser # 11xx that he used as his 'deer gun' growing up in the UP of Michigan in the 1940s. IIRC, the entire family of WSLs were only produced until the mid 1930s or so, and most companies quit making ammunition for it by the 1960s. I still have a half box of Remington 200gr softpoints... Yes, you can buy ammo from one of the specialty custom shops, but even back 30 years ago it was almost $4/round! Mine's a wall-hanger now...

Great rifles. I own Winchester Model 1905s in .32 WSL and .35 WSL and a Model 1907 in .351 WSL. I do not have a Model 1910. Mine are also standard models, no checkering. The Model 1910 is a hole in my collection.
When the .350 Legend was introduced, my thoughts were "Hmmm, seems a lot like the .351 WSL". I am sure the .351 could easily be loaded to match the .350 Legend, but the blowback operated Model 1907 would eventually be damaged by the increased recoil of the additional 100-150 fps of the loading.
BTW, the rod charging handle of the series of these rifles was a work-around to the Browning patent for the side charging handle which Remington held at the time. The rod charger and the reciprocating weight in the forend precluded the use of a tube magazine.
I also own a Remington Model 81, the updated version of the Model 8 which dates to 1906. Semi-auto, box magazine fed autoloaders are nothing new.

Very interesting comparison. I like the more conventional and less "tactical" looks of the Winchester. I also feel that its charging method is easier to use, if a bit unusual.

If memory serves the National Guard also ordered the model 1907 for home guard use so they could transfer the more standard rifles to combat roles. I also find it amusing that Winchester came full circle updating the .351 and .401 bringing them back with .350 Legend and .400 Legend

I recently bought a winchester m1907 sl. Absolutely beautiful rifle and it shoots so well.
This video made me very sad for two reasons. 1st I owned a beautiful mod 10 in 351 auto loader that I had to sell,then number2 was a wildcat that I developed years later on a 30 carbine Ruger that I made into a 40 caliber using the 7.62 X 39 blown out to 40 cal using custom RCBS dies and launching a 200 gr XTP Hornady bullet pushing 2350 FPC Then due to my wife getting very sick I put it back to 762x39 and sold it to pay med bills. The only good thing is I still have the barrel and dies should I ever get a chance to do it again. My original thoughts for this was the old 401 autoloader and it turned out to be a stone cold pig and deer killer. Thanks for the memories.
