  • Found this old Galion 503 motor grader for sale on Marketplace so me and a buddy went and picked it up. Its a little rough in some spots but I think its going to be an excellent machine for maintaining my super long driveway and maybe worth taking out to do some jobs with!

    You have shown most of my experiences with early International engines. Oddly easy to start after ages sitting(any motor that isn't seized). Frozen gearbox due to water ingress(Scout 80). Frozen clutch (Farmall 230 EVERY SPRING). Accidental start (CO 1800). Fuel economy (hahahaha). Looks like a great project, have fun!

      Yeap think even in just a 10 years new graders condition, let alone if was sitting that ten years under the elements after being used more than half a century... This thing might be old, loose from every imageable linkage and joint... but its still hundred times better and more reliable than anything pushed out in past ten years or in future that matter since i dont expect manufacturers chance their "modern" ways of consumerism. Personally i'm not consumer, i'm customer and i expect machine made to last, not these modern crap that is ready to wrecker if one computer board is fried.

    I admire and applaud your dedication to restoring old iron. As a kid I remember the county DPW having a Galion grader. A lot of towns bought them for their public works department as they were relatively inexpensive compared with Caterpillar, Austin-Western, Huber and Adams. And a lot more reliable than Allis-Chalmers. They were reliable and easy to maintain, which was important because public works employees had all the gentle touch of a gorilla. Wishing you all the luck in the world in restoring. From watching this video I can see you’re going to need it.

    We owned a 503 with a diesel. Even in the mild California Bay Area climate where it can feel colder than it is it would take a while for the smoke to clear even after using the glow plugs . Ours had a more modern looking straight or push nose and ripper’s. I often drove it to nearby jobs and we also hauled it on a 1954 Single axle lacross tilt trailer that it barely fit on . We accomplished that by using heavy planks that kept the front wheels from hanging off the bed before the trailer would tilt and the front wheels were on the deck. Coming off we used metal skids that the blade sat on .

      @@richardtruesdell8289 Indeed, as long as there are no crazy amounts of Diesel or Gasoline in there you are fine. with Gasoline you have to be careful about the vapors (Flashpoint between -45 °C and 10 °C or -49 °F and 50 °F), that is what I would consider the most dangerous option. Diesel, well the the Flash point also is only at 56 °C / 133 °F, but the actual ignition Point for both is around or just above 200 °C / 400 °F. Engine Oil? You may use that in an extinguisher or you really have to atomize it to ignite that easy. It sometimes is said engine oil cannot burn as it has no flash point, which is not exactly true. the problem with engine oil is, that it is a mixture of I don´t know what not, and from a certain temperature, substances might start to boil out. Those substances may burn. and this boiling off leaves a carbon residue, what we mostly call "burned oil residue2 in an engine.
      looking at the chemical data, engine oil may have a flash point starting around 80 °C to 125 °C (or 176 °F to 257 °C) and depending if mineral or snythetic oil may boil somewhere between 120 °C and 160 °C (248 °F to 320 °F) it may actually ignite above 500 °C / 932 °C.
      So to get it burning, you would have needed to heat the whole amount of oil and everything around up to almost 1000 °F. Not sure how long it will take a weed burner, or if it even may reach that temperature on a cold winter day.

      @@alexanderkupke920 You can burn engine oil, My old shop and tons of other shops have waste oil furnaces. We literally poured the dirty oil from oil changes into the tank and itd burn it to heat the shop in the winter. Also diesel engines will burn engine oil and even antifreeze if it leaks into the cylinder, thats what causes a runaway diesel, well also leaky injectors. But as for lighting engine oil on fire with just a open flame yeah thats hard unless its mixed with gasoline, diesel, or even ethanol/methanol.

    • @alexanderkupke920
      @alexanderkupke920 3 роки тому

      @@Lotek117 I am well aware of those waste oil furnaces, I think you can see some guys on UA-cam using them for forge work. But all of those I have seen, actually have a blower on the one side and a nozzle atomizing the fuel into the air stream. And I actually mentioned atomizing as a way to be able to ignite the stuff. I think those burners can actually burn any liquid that is flammable in some way. with high air flow they actually burn quite "cleanly" (well in terms of soot, I just gently ignore any byproducts from either mixed in substances or just temperature like nitric oxides or whatever may be in the oil that gets burned)
      Another way getting that oil to burn easier may be a wicking material keeping enough heat to reach the actual flashpoint.

    You want to put 'er in low gears, not high, if you want to use the engine as a brake. Remember, in 1st gear the engine turns a bunch to make the wheels turn a little. In 4th gear the engine turns a little to make the wheels turn a lot. Run that in reverse, push on those wheels in high gear and they have to turn the engine a little (easy). Push on the wheels in low gear and the engine has to turn a lot (hard). Keep the vids coming and stay safe!

    Just touch the brakes to put pressure ON the clutch. My old Massey 135 clutch was stuck. Put it up against a big oak and then tried to push it over. The clutch finally slipped and broke loose. It was tricky getting close to the tree with engine running and in gear, but it worked.

    I'm born and raised in Galion, many of the men in my family worked for Galion Iron Works - until it closed down. My stepdad worked in the paint shop. Equipment came in your choice of colors - Safety Yellow and Safety Orange. Every now and then you would see a car around town painted in one of those colors. The company put a stop to that. Love your video - best laugh I've had all week. Good on you for getting the ole gal up and running.
