How To Make Perfectly Matched Ear Wires - DIY

- In this video I show you how I make perfectly matched ear wires out of wire. This technique is easy and quick for professional looking handcrafted ear wires. You can crank a bunch of these out while watching TV so you always have them on hand to complete your beautiful handmade earrings.
Note: I show you how to turn your loops with a bail making pliers but if you only have a round nose, just turn each wire individually first on your marked round nose and then proceed with the next steps.
If you only have soft wire, use a rawhide mallet and gently tap the completed ear wires a few times on a bench block to work harden.
Tools and Materials:
Round nose pliers or 6-step bail making pliers
Flat nose pliers
Flush cutters
Fine grit sandpaper or nail file with a finer grit
Mandrel - bail making pliers (preferred for this technique) or dowel
Chain nose for 2nd technique
Sharpie marker
Chasing hammer and bench block (optional)
20 gauge half-hard wire (preferred) or 22 gauge

Nice job, thanks. Got to ask, what’s with the sharpie and the round nose pliers ? 😊
Thanks for watching. You mark your round nose pliers so your loops are consistently the same size.
I am on a campaign to make my own ear wires in various finishes. Everyone has their own technique but your's is one of the best I've seen; simple and repeatable and hooking each pair together is brilliant! I hadn't thought of that. I know you made this video a while ago but can you tell me what grit file you are using in the video and/or currently? Thanks very much, Liz.
Very clear instructions. This video is very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks very useful. Thanks for sharing what gauge wire also
Can you use silver plated copper wire?
It depends on the hardness and whether the plating has nickel in it. I would go with stainless steel for both those reasons and it doesn't tarnish. It's really stiff, but doable.
1st - your camera work is great...everything you're doing can be seen. Loved seeing your tutorial because this is exactly how I make earwires (1st technique). I use the regular bail pliers but will be treating myself to this new plier. Personal preference, I like a longer section at the end of the wire so I place the flat nose pliers across both wires, with the end of the wires flush against the side edge, & give them a slight push. The bend is softer which is enough to keep them from slipping out of the piercing but easier to put on (at least for me). The one thing I haven't done is connect them at the loop but will be doing this from now on...no more time wasted trying to match them up later.
Making sterling jewelry is addictive and sl. expensive, so your tips conserve it nicely.
Awesome! Thanks so much for watching
Sorry, lost part of my comment. I think there must have been someone before Vaideh.
Thanks. Great tips!!
❤
I luv ur tutorial videos, I have learned so much.....donna
+Cindy cav I think this comment is for a different video...but thanks.
Hello Liz and thank you so much for sharing your wire working knowledge! I now have to purchase some heavy gauge tools to work that 16 g wire projects that I have watched you instruct. I do have a question about copper wire and making the ball head pins... when I burn the copper with the torch and then clean them, they are still that dull finish instead of the shiny finish that I like. How do I get my shiny finish back? You are awesome, thanks in advance!
You are so welcome and THANK YOU for your kind support.
OK, copper ball pins...I have never made copper ones before because you really need a hot torch but as far as polishing them goes, I would use a polishing pad. I have them for sale and they are awesome...they are small foam squares infused with a light abrasive coating that is fine enough for final polishing and shine. They are .20 each and will last a bit. Email me your info and I could send you some. I will have them for sale on my website when it gets up and running. How many would you like? Here is my email address: makingiteasywithliz@gmail.com
I love that you gave credit for where you learned a technique. Most people ignore doing so. Thank you for the tip about connecting each matched pair of ear wires. Simple, clear video. Good job!
+MsLizRich Right on! Thanks.
Well, that looked easy!! ;-) Great video, I don't have those pliers but you can be sure it's on my birthday gift list this year! I have a wire jig, maybe I could have a go on that!
Charwoman Thanks so much for watching Charwoman.
Thank you for those tips, easy way of doing it.
venusiandesigns You are so welcome and thank for watching.
Please give credit to the person who gave instructions that use a single wire to make duplicates. I learned that technique from Vaidehi’s Handmade VHM.
It was so long ago, I am not sure where I saw that. I use my own technique, just thought I would share that one. When it comes to jewellery making, no one gets credit for their original designs. It's unfortunate and a fact one must live with if sharing to the public.
Great,I enjoy your Videos,Thank you
45 plus You're welcome and thank you.
I centopercento Thank you so much.
Love this, but I don't like the way you did the last part of your ends of the ear wires. I like them more curved then angled. Very nice tutorial!
If I don't have "half hard" wire or I'm not sure what I have, can I just hardened softer wire a little with my rubber or nylon mallet and bench block?
Love it!! the tip to put them together is amazing!! never would have thought of that. The last earwire technique is brilliant!! You could leave them together untill you are ready to add the dangly part :)
Thanks for watching Charlene.
I made some earwires!! They look great :)
+charlene broeckx Right on.

This is life changing, well, my jewelry making life anyway! I can’t believe I used to buy pre-made ear wires, but never again. Just got my 6-in-1 looping pliers and wow, so great. Thank you very, very much 💕
