    • @hawksandwich4742
      @hawksandwich4742 3 місяці тому +3

      i'm not sure why this isn't already a thing, we have the technology for it.
      gpt4-o can recognize your voice and emotion, and can translate spoken language almost instantly. just train it on dogs' body language as well, and bam.

    • @hrabesancho1892

      somebody will definitely work on this. About current research, not sure about cats and dogs, but i know that some scientists are using AI to understand language of whales, because we have a lot of data of their communication.

    • @wonmoreminute
      @wonmoreminute 3 місяці тому

      @@hawksandwich4742It is not that simple, unfortunately. The purpose of AI translation between animals and humans would presumably be to give us unique insight into what animals are communicating to us, and for them to understand what we are communicating to them.
      However, to the best of our ability (and theirs) we already do that when we communicate directly with animals and vice versa. Aside from highly intelligent animals like whales and dolphins, most communication with animals is non- verbal. Or in some cases, as with chimpanzees, their vocabulary is small enough that it’s manageable without AI.
      There is nothing an AI can tell you about your cat’s intent when it meows that you can’t already interpret yourself. And the cat can’t express its intention directly to the AI any better than it can express it to you.
      There is no internet of animal content for AI to train on, and no way for animals to provide feedback for reinforcement learning at scale to train an AI.
      AI can only observe and interpret their intent as we do, based on human created training data.
      As any owner of multiple cats or dogs knows, they don’t have a common verbal or written language that they use to communicate with each other. Nor do they care.
      They smell each other, express aggression and affection, play with one another and even get jealous when one gets something the other wants. But they don’t exchange ideas or make plans with each other. They don’t tell each other stories or talk about what happened at the dog park.

    • @Leotique
      @Leotique 3 місяці тому +1

      I guess it shouldn't be that hard to build something that could understand certain animal species, but to build something to make them understand us is harder, maybe we could do that by training them to understand some keywords, like Pawlow did with his dogs, but thats it. There is a reason why most animals haven't overthrown us already, which means they might not be able to understand a language at all, and would rather communicate through smell, gesture and instinct. Maybe this translation would work for great apes, a few advanced mammals.

      when he said we have “probably two more turns of the crank” i think he’s referring to the expected jumps in compute and data for new GPT generations. for example, GPT-2 had 1.5 billion parameters and required several thousand petaflop/s-days of compute. GPT-3, with 175 billion parameters, needed around 3640 petaflop/s-days-a 100x jump. GPT-4, at around 1 trillion parameters, needed even more compute and data, likely in the terabyte range.
      Gates knows Microsoft can achieve two more 100x jumps in compute and data
      because, well, it’s Microsoft. They have vast infrastructure, deep pockets, and the talent.
      He did say “probably” though and that’s most likely because that amount of compute would require standing up full on power plants (10 gigawatts at that scale) and that’s insane. I think nyc doesn’t use that much power.

    A highly interesting discussion concerning the most impactful issue of the coming generation: our dizzying rush and compulsion to advance a form of intelligence superseding and maybe eclipsing our own seems to be irresistible.
    And yet, there is a greater, widely ignored issue: what to do with the increasing numbers of individuals who are under-educated and under-employed--indeed, unemployable--who will be displaced by a theoretically perfectly productive artificial intelligence? All the builders, hand-workers and craftsmen--those who have been historically the most susceptible to displacement as well as the manipulations of populist demagogues--what to do with them?

In fact , even now, translators, transcribers, customer service workers, writers (bloggers, authors), and other "language workers" are the most at risk of displacement.

    Thank you gentlemen, great interview! Re the "What is the breakthrough AI application?" question, I would reply: an AI or AI app that can train, coach and guide entrepreneurs in designing and launching a new business so that they have a 99.9999% chance of success (just like the odds of flying safely on modern airplanes). This AI would be similar to the AI in the movie Echelon where users get guidance on exactly what to do, given their goals.
    This AI, let's call it Artificial Business Intelligence (ABI), would be a Turing machine that can see (through a phone's camera) and read all documents, and then propose the right course of action while also explaining its reasoning (using what Bill calls metacognition capability).
    At the highest conceptual level, such an ABI is not that different from Deep Blue, the AI that defeated Garry Kasparov in 1997.
    Given the fact that most knowledge workers will lose their job, there would be enormous demand for something like ABI so people can launch their own business and survive financially (until UBI kicks in).

      There isn't any evidence Gates ever said that at a trade show in '81, but even if he did we don't know the context. He was supposedly referring to the Intel 8088, where its 640KB of RAM was 10x what was being offered by the Apple II or Commodore 64. To put into context for today, where 16GB of RAM is common, it would be like a salesman selling a computer and claiming 160GB of RAM should be enough for anyone. In that context it wouldn't be saying it would be enough for anyone for any purpose ever, just enough for anyone buying that personal computer the salesman is promoting. Which would be a very fair statement.

    In the Bill Gates Netflix doc, 'What Can AI Do For Us', he sits in a meeting with a gentleman and the gentleman states as long as we can put the 'humanist' element before greed, we will be alright with AI. So I ask anyone here reading this, what industry that makes money or has the potential to make money , was, or has been invested in and brought to market that did not get infected with the pitfalls of ultra capitalism? For me, not ONE! If AI gets to the point it is dominating industry, it will be the same as any other profitable business, and it will almost All be driven by greed and the bottom line. They are just telling themselves this cool stuff to make themselves feel good. There is no way GREED will not dominate AI in America. America is a greedy country and ultra capitalism is the dominate religion. If, and as soon as BIG business can get the work they are paying for done cheaper with AI, people will be written off like a bad movie script in Hollywood.

    Historically, the West has utilized new technologies for military or imperialistic purposes before finding broader applications. The West primarily used gunpowder to create weapons of war, such as cannons and firearms, allowing Western powers to expand their military capabilities and dominate other regions through conquest and colonization of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. The steam engine was instrumental in expanding colonial empires, as steam-powered ships facilitated easier transportation of goods and troops, enabling Western powers to exploit resources and establish control over distant territories. The first use of nuclear technology was dropping atomic bombs on the civilians in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The same pattern will emerge with AI. The CHIPS Act, high-end chips, and EUV sanctions imply that the US is already working on the weaponization of AI.
    Following its historical pattern, China will mainly use AI for commercial and peaceful purposes. Papermaking revolutionized communication, education, and record-keeping, spreading knowledge and culture. Gunpowder was used for fireworks. The compass was adapted for navigational purposes, allowing for more accurate sea travel and exploration. Printing facilitated the dissemination of information, literature, and art, contributing to cultural exchange and education. Porcelain was highly prized domestically and internationally as a luxury item and a symbol of Chinese craftsmanship. Silk was one of the most valuable commodities traded along the Silk Road and played a significant role in China's economy and diplomacy.
    Humans will not be able to control an ASI. Trying to control an ASI is like trying to control another human being who is more capable than you. They will be able to find ways to circumvent any attempts at control. Let's hope that the ASI adopts an abundance mindset of cooperation, resource-sharing, and win-win outcomes, instead of the scarcity mindset of competition, fear, and win-lose outcomes.

      technology, war and capital all developed in tandem. globally. however because of capitalisms development and that development taking place in "the west" (sic) its sometimes mistaken as being "western" in of itself. but historically speaking, technology and war have gone hand in hand. one thing i would say is that more ppl were killed in the uk with welfare cuts in the last decade that what died in the dropping of those bombs on hiroshima nd nagasaki , a quiet weapon in a quiet war. so the technologies are not just the obvious weapons, the bombs and the guns, the weapons are now also policies and nudges and subterfuge.

    In the book "The Road Ahead" (1995), Bill Gates says "VR will, without a doubt, be more immersive than video games, and more addictive". And, speaking of addiction, when recalling his contact with computers as a child, Gates says "I was addicted." Later, he admits that "my father became addicted when he used a computer to prepare his income tax". The phrase in "The Road Ahead" that best summarizes this issue - "If you give them a chance, you’re almost certain to be hooked" - couldn’t be compared to the subliminal message that a drug dealer sends when he tries to seduce someone with the wonders provided by drugs?
    I don't know if Bill Gates is right about what AI may or may not mean for the world in the coming decades. But it seems clear to me that he managed to addict the world to computers and the internet, with all the bad things that this caused: more anxiety, less capacity for social interaction, commercial and political manipulation, inattention and lack of focus among students and, of course, all that rubbish of Fake News and Fake Science that gave rise to the crazy people who campaign against vaccines and in favor of the Flat Earth, the Hollow Earth, aliens and the reptilian race (of which Bill Gates himself would be part, according to one version). AI will certainly amplify everything bad that already exists in the internet and in this sense it will act as a new synthetic drug, a virtual LSD over which not even its creators will have any control.
    The development of AI could have a possible consequence that Bill Gates does not want to predict now. In the 2000s, as reality was replaced by virtuality, social problems did not cease to exist. They were simply forgotten and the consequence was an increase, not a decrease, in poverty. The political success of Trump, Bolsonaro, Meloni, Miliei and others of the same ilk, paved on social media, reliably proves that hundreds of millions of people around the planet have come to consider that the only real reality is virtual reality, as if the concrete economic inequalities that these politicians represent and reinforce no longer matter at the price of a connection to the network. So, totally drunk, these people live and flaunt their alienated lives in a violent way. Alienated not by lack, but paradoxically by excess of information. AI will not solve it, but rather make all of this bullshit worse. Of course some people will gain more power and more fortune, but they will not be the common people. On the contrary, AI uses content that millions of people create to earn some money on the internet without paying. This can hardly be considered fair.

    Yeh all thus stuff is great but all 4 people pretty much ignore the elephant in the room which obviously is the usage of AI for the further development of implements of war. Obviously national governments can gain control of AI on a national basis through licensing, mandatory registration, control boards, taxation and law suits and other ways. The key is controlling AI development of military usage on an International basis. That's the hard issue that MUST be addressed in the absence of which all other AI developments become irrelevant.

    As a medical doctor and member of Rotary ( which almost eradicated some very lethal illnesses in third-world-lands, like the smallpox), I am still not convinced, if we just fight wind mills with that strategy!
    The female education in these countries must be increesed by any means!
    This- and to my eyes- ist the key to controlling birth rates and improving technological arise and independency for third word countries.
    AI ( or nuclear fusion reactors etc.) is a tool, they will only be able tu use if the standards are high enough.
    And it starts - and I repet myselve- with the female education! Period!😅

    You don't have to slow down the development of AI, you need to pave the race track which will be safe. e.g. You don't build slower cars in the race track you adapt the race track to control the car better. Ultimately, you have to fight fire with fire, I mean a Global Super AI will control & manage the future AIs, the human intelligence will not be able to digest or have the speed to create instruments of control or management with the same speed as AI.

    You’re so enthusiastic to talk to Bill. Are you aware of how criminally he’s stolen technology from potential partnerships? He’s just not a good guy.

    Saying... Let the government figure the bigger social aspects out is basically irresponsible. Its like oul companies making all the profit and letting the government clean out all of their messes. Are all of the people getting fired just dying to take care of the elderly? Hummm... Not sure about that one. Of course we need more hands on in all areas but better ask AI what kind of jobs people getting fired would be able to do. Wouldn't it be great if all the billionaires would get taxed fairly so that the rest of us could take a breather? AI to s a good thing and it needs to be treated with careful consideration when it comes to its effects on human lives.

    I can't help picture mr G😢 being a bad man, i feel his "reputation " in the last decade, has made him untrustable. I feel his contempt for the average person ,coming out of in an undeniably tainted soul vibe. This makes me sad ....

    Ask Bill Gates to contact me. I have some sociological, political, and other issues regarding multiple world issues. I have "solutions".....more than Chat Gpt4, and as Humans as we could "maybe" progress. My big issue is the political structures and how common sense could with mega convision solve a few problems prior the continual rise of fascism world wide. I have solutions that are both sociological and philosophical and more. All my life I have worked on solutions. And I have at the biggest level without others even know.

    I'm not allergic or hate "AI" just suggesting that we more responsible when diagnosing information provide by "AI" becay not everyone likesy it so that even the smallest nerve in everyone's brain is accessedy and distributed irresponsibly . And the second thing is ,I don't like getting into political metters.

    White collar workers will be replaced first in our workforce because AI will do it faster, more accurately and work 24/7 they won't have to pay social security, require health care, prevailing wage or taxes so that in its self will change our society. Blue collar workers will take longer as robotics have to catch up. It will come down to profit and cost, AI will make money for corporations eventually at a greater rate that what physical people can offer.

    One of the key challenge that all humanity is facing is uncertainties weather in the form of viral infection disease like corona or the miss use of technology. When we talk a lot about AI the first thing that comes to mind is biotechnology .unless we dont have vaccine we can not win the war . The next insights that i would like to share is the time taken to reaserch the vaccine and then the tome for clinical trials
    Hopefully AI will contribute to address the issue
