I’ve had my TDI tuning box fitted to my e61 lci 30d for almost two years now with no problems at all. Mine is also on the maximum boost setting and it just pulls a lot better than without it.
Darkside Developments did a video yesterday about tuning boxes and they compared the mainstream ones, the findings are quite interesting! Worth a watch!
Dtuk have replied to that video on their UA-cam page showing the email conversation between themselves and Darkside. That makes interesting reading too.
I’m not totally sure what overall effect a tuning box has… all I can say is that I definitely think a remap is the best way, however I did genuinely feel like the engine power was ‘turned-up’ with the box attached. It’s hard to believe a tuning box can do anything good for your engine though in the long term
It would be interesting if you could do some mid-range testing, middle lane to outside, 40-70+ for example. Although the standing start is very impressive, the odd time i have done it at the traffic lights to teach a chav, i was surpirised how quick even my 520d is in sport mode. Knowing how the gearbox works though, i also know how much strain is put on the clutches from standing starts. Plus i felt a bit of a tosser for doing it and being miles in front for no reason! Far more useful for day-to-day driving is the midrange. I can understand people commenting on the E61 520d as these only came with the 6-speed box but with the 8-speed, they really help with acceleration when you don't have the power. People may moan at the 520d but what people don't realise is its 184bhp stock which is the same as my E36 328i was!
I have received mine but doesn't look like the one you show us or the one that I sow on your website. Is a simple black box that I have to open every time I want to change settings. But I'm happy with the results.
I have the DTUK CRD3+ on my BMW X1 20d for a year now. I wasn't impressed with it initially as there seemed to be no difference at all when I installed it. Just a week ago I removed it to get the MOT and that's when I realised that this box really was working. The car became noticeably lazy without the box on. I reinstalled the box after the MOT and by God.. there is a world of difference. Specially the torque at lower rpm. It grunts and lugs like a locomotive. Try flooring it on a slope with and without the box and you will see what I mean. Without the box it behaves like a normal car, but with the box on, you can feel it grunting and lifting the car up with urgency. In fact I was afraid I might break a crank or something as it was sending a shiver throughout the car. It has 3 maps: Efficiency, Dynamic and Sport with 7 sub-settings each. I couldn't make out any difference between the Efficiency and Dynamic maps though. It behaves the same as what I have mentioned above. The Sport map was different. It had not so much of grunt low down but did have a higher boost feeling at the higher end of the rpm. I don't think I can drive without this box anymore. It think it mimics the 25d in the performance department now.
Hmm interesting- i had my van mapped from 110ps to 155ps I thought in my head beforehand it isnt a huge amount but anything will help - crikey! That extra 45ps really helped and the torque. It sounds daft but for a second or so when its boosting it pushes you in to the seat
take car to a dyno and run with and without tuning box connected. will find your csr doesnt actually have much of a difference in power. anybody who gets these tuning boxes fitted all say that their car feels faster but need dyno done to get proper results.
Nut Job look I’m not saying they are all bad but my personal experience with them over the years aren’t great ,I know custom maps and performance tuning are expensive but in my opinion more reliable and more safe to take ya car to a diesel specialist put it on the rolling road and have a custom map tailored to the car instead of a tuning box tricking the ECU and putting engine components at risk.

Ah well... the thing is, the tuning boxes like these will usually report improved mpg figures via the car’s onboard computer. This is because it’s actually being tricked into injecting more fuel than it thinks it is (making you go faster & further) which will report a higher mpg. If you were to calculate it yourself between fill-ups you’d see it’s wrong 🤓
I have used v max diesel, DTUK chip box k and N filter and octane booster, every step made big difference and all together I'm getting 45 mpg driven like a twatt and driven gently 72.8 mpg on motorway on a W reg s80 2.5tdi auto 😁
@@paulsmeg No you're not, the box just increases rail pressure so your car pumps in more fuel because the box tells the ecu the rail pressure is lower. So your MPG readout is wrong.

Well, I’m sure it didn’t help... but I wouldn’t lay the blame with a tuning box. It’s a lubrication failure of some sort, but we’ll see soon enough when I get started on the rebuild
I’m still here 👍 Just had to focus on other things when the whole COVID situation started last year. I do plan to post a few vids once the freezing weather disappears 😀
So you may be able to get a map to take it to 310 which is about the stock performance of the 535d, which share all the common components with yours (so they are designed for the torque and BHP loads). I had my last 2 cars performance mapped (primary purpose was DPF delete). Things did run a lot hotter, temp sensor warnings had to be coded out and things started wearing out much faster (2x intercoolers and 2x inlet manifolds cracking). Both weak spots on the Jaguar XF but apparently unheard if for anyone to have 2 failures on each!
Bought it for £100. I there are a few cheaper ones about, but it appears DTUK have a good reputation so I thought it was worth a punt 👍 I’ll probably resell it when I remap the car. Was just curious if they actually work.
It’s not so much the hp as much as the torque that’s increased, it’s obvious this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about because some boxes are as good as stage one remap. JB4 ,TDI tuning , and bluespark is one of them.

First launch sounded brutal ...2nd launch was tame..and yes in my experience the difference must be 30-40 bhp it’s clear as water

Tbh, it’s been fun trying the tuning box out as a bit of ‘lockdown fun’ but I think a remap will come pretty soon....

Eventually down the line you should delete the dpf and get a stage 2 map. That’ll make 330+hp and close to 700nm. 😉
