Huge thanks for the kind words, all! :^) A slight bit of EQ and compression added (mostly just to make overall audio louder), but no changes except onboard settings when demoing different tones.
Awesome bass! Love your groove!
Hi Norm , your bass sound wonderfull and is super versatile, the MTD seemed impossible to improve since a very passionate and competent bass player named Norm come to uplift a notch what seemed already perfect, wonderful job my friend , a masterpiece
Grazie, amico mio! :^) Michael & Daniel (and Clyde from Bartolini) continue to amaze! If you haven't yet, please check out the new video that shows the entire build process-it's really interesting & great to see such talented luthiers making the instruments we love. Dio ti benedica, Mario! I hope you & yours are well.
Hi Norm!! I had the pleaser meeting you at a clinic you put on at Jim's Music in Tustin, Ca. You were cool enough to let me play and hold the Bass that MT is holding. It was a great day for me. Looking forward to your next gig at Mccormick & Schmick's in Irvine. Beautiful bass BTW. So versatile sounding.
Can not wait to hear it live!
Hi Norm, wow! that's a really nice bass, I would love to own one of those. Michael Tobias is an astounding craftsman and I have played his basses over the years and loved them all. Love your playing too by the way, respect.
Congrats! Finally! Can't wait to try one out...
Amazing! You continue to inspire, thanks Norm! Carol says "Hi, come see us in AZ, we miss you!"
Thx for this video Norm, i love all your stuff and vids!!!
All three basses look great. Your bass sounds great. I love MTD basses.
OOPS - quick correction (and MYSTERY SOLVED!), by the way: the mid frequencies are actually 250/450 hz! Sorry for the initial misinformation! These frequencies were selected during prototyping and REALLY speak on this instrument.
Nice job Norm! I'll try tweaking 400 & 800 next time I mix bass in a recording!
CORRECTION: I'll be tweaking 250/450 hz! :>)
I was waiting for them to say what model the pickups are. I'm guessing they are a custom Bartolini for this model?
The red one is gorgeous! The other two are also beautiful!
Fantastic bass Norm. We featured this Monday. #BassPlayersGuild #MTDMonday
THIS BASS IS CLEAN AND THICK ON THE BOTTOM AND HAS EXCELLENT TONALLITY ON THE HIGH'S
I love the sound you get at 6:42 to 6:48. How do you get that sound? More directly, how do I get that sound out of my Kingston Heir 5?
Really great sounding bass.
So hope there'll be an MTD Kingston Norm Stockton Artist Edition... ;-)
Thanks for the share bro, love it A.J. Smith
You're welcome Calvin Campbell!
Im so happy for you Norm...Rock On..or I should say Groove On!
Sounds amazing!
The bridge pickup is in an unusual place.
Oh my God, this bass sounds amazing! I thought your old green bass sounded really good. This sounds a bit better and has a 10x better sounding slap tone. Success! Your tone @1:59 is killer, by the way!
Very nice norm!!
Norm, I really enjoy your videos and congrats on your new Artist model! That bass sounds fantastic and is incredibly versatile! On the coil switches, Michael says the pickups can go from parallel humbucking to single coil; I'm wondering if you can also switch to series humbucking? Best regards, Derwin
MY GOODNESS..... THIS BASS IS AWESOME !!!!! I WANT ONE IN A 7 STRING.....
Norm, i see you have changed a few of the new models in a few years, or at least changed the bridge on the same guitar. Any comments on switching the bridge from half-modern to a vintage style bridge? Thanks.
Awesome bass Norm!!
What is the string spacing?
Hi Norm, did you EQ or use any compression after recording it? That bass sounds phenominal!
Hey Norm
Sounds Great! Maybe you should come back to the UK so we can test it out #¬)
Keep Well
Maybe I am late. Wonder if this bass is still available?
Absolutely-MTD is still handbuilding them-more info if you go to mtdbass.com :^)
Although I grew up loving & lusting over John Myung & Bryan Beller's old-school Tobias Basses, in-between then & now my bass tone tastes have changed rather radically from "hippy sandwich" neck-thrus with Dual Coil soapbars to Jazz-style bolt-ons with much less complex tone woods in the same bass: my #1 is a Custom Spector Euro Bolt-On DLX 5 EX w/ Zebrawood top, Alder back (punchier attack & smooth tone compared to the slower attack & "rougher" tone of the all-Maple/Maple & Alder of the USA and Euro N/Ts) custom wound-and-sized Nordstrand "Big Single" single coil pickups with super-large magnets and apertures & Aguilar OBP-3SK/PP preamp for the ultimate "(Spector)Jazz-on-Steroids" compared to the "glossy" tone of the stock EMG pickups & EMG/Spector preamps). And although I have the utmost respect for Mr. Tobias (around 2005 he answered an email of mine about a bass project and gave me advice for install lined inlays that matched the bass color) his MTD-era Basses simply aren't my cup-o'-tea in terms of sonics.
...until now. The Norm Stockton MTD Saratoga Artist Edition sounds like my bolt-on Spectors and Mike Lull Jazz Basses (a Modern 4 & custom Modern 5, my other main go-to basses), quick on the attack and punchy as hell. Also, as a player who's comfortable on 35"-scale 5-strings and believes they contribute to a well-defined and deep low-B (but is only *part* of the equation in a well-made bass: slapping an extra inch onto a 34" bass isn't likely to do much if anything...) that this model is the only version of the Saratoga to do so is a major selling point, as is the Alder & Maple body woods and Maple & Birdseye Maple fretboard, wood combinations I've used and loved for years! The only two things I'd asked to be "modified" would be tightening the string-spacing from 19mm to 18 or 17.5mm for those of us who like a more "average" than "wide" that 19mm-3/4" is considered, and swapping the larger Hipshot "Cloverleaf" to their "Y-Key" model which is smaller, more modern & streamlined. For over 7k I don't think one option of tighter string-spacing is too much to ask, and it would certainly bring this Bassist into considering moving to MTD! :-D
sooeet mace!
Why the headstock say saratoga?
Sounds just like my Tobias Growler! I do not need any boutique MTD as i have the grandfather of these basses
I hear you, FM Ramento. That stated, this model is capable of a substantially broader range of tones than a Growler - everything from Jaco bridge pick-up bark to big humbucker rock to tones along the lines of Michael's MTD 535 slap tone. If you ever get a chance to A/B between them, you'll immediately see what I mean. But you'd expect that from a bass costing many times what your Growler cost. :^)
You can't go wrong with an MTD
I'm listening
With
Trash headphones
Still
The mtd
Sounds
Incredible
IN CONCLUSION: REGARDING ON WHAT I READ AND HEARD, MTD SEEMS TO BE A VERY GOOD BASS. BASSISTS SEEM TO LIKE IT A LOT AND ONLY COMPLAIN ABOUT THE BATTERIE COMPARTMENT OPENED WITH SCREW DRIVER. I AM ABOUT TO BUY ONE FOR $550.
That's a great-looking and sounding bass!!! Unfortunately, is constructed of unobtanium and is way out of my affordability range!
Thanks, Keith! And stay tuned-some cool news might be forthcoming! :^)
no where does this bass sound like a jazz bass or have that jaco tone...i traded my warwick streamer stage 2 for it and i hated the tone of this bass, it was not versatile at all. im glad i was able to trade back for my streamer stage 2
Anyone elts hate this amount of treble?
I don't like the scroll.
