Wow! Never seen music explained in such organic, geometric and -- to be redundant -- musical terms! It's what they mean when they say that you've got to "feel" the music. This video codifies that. Awesome! Consider me a disciple. (Of course, it also helps that I am a fan of MTD basses. I dig mine.)
Awesome info. Was enrolled in Art of Groove years ago but never got around to going through it. I have a 5 and a 4 and leaning more towards the 5. I have some software on learning the board real good and ear training. Will try to get that down and maybe go through your course. I really like the groove aspect.
Hello Norm. Just found you on here. Excellenté advice and performance. Its been about 15 years since I touched a bass and do awfully miss playing. Brings back fond memories. Ciao Amigo!
Thanks for the great video. Figured out some of these things on my own while some other things were new to me. Wish I found you earlier which would have made it easier for me. Cheers.
Hi Norm, very interresting approach. You're a real good teacher. Maybe I'll can meet you in a master class in France with my teacher in Nice (France) this autumn. I hope this meeting will happen. Thanks for your advices
Norm. Thanks for the excellent lesson. I think what I like best about the way you teach in this video are the parenthetical ques that convey different ideas while you play. Granted, I totally agree that you have to connect emotionally to really get the music to sing, but it has to be ingrained in the old cerebral cortex first---at least for me. By the way, I just saw the new MTD Norm Stockton model demo'd by you with Mike Tobias and his son. That bass sounds KILLER! I want one (sorry---got a little covetous there).
I want to learn bass. All the guys I like play 5-string (or more). Should begin with 4 or 5 string bass? BTW - Norm, I love your approach to the instrument, and in particular you emphasis on the importance of groove. I first saw you at NAMM 2013. I was impressed at how you were able to make a jazz concert worshipful.
Sorry to chime in late, @SoCalVipers - and thanks for your kind words. I am an advocate for 5's. I think it's the perfect extended range bass (once you have access to those sub-bass frequencies, it's really hard to go back!), but not too many strings that they get in the way and/or make people want to fire you. :^) I use a 7-string on my projects for chordal playing and solos, but am otherwise a 5-string player all the way (with a couple of 4's - old Hofner, P-bass, etc., for session stuff). Have fun!

Dude it is very easy.
MORE IS MORE. so start with 5 or 6 is very very fine.
+SoCalVipers im not gonna say its easier but if your goal is to get there just buy a fiver and ignore the lowest string

5 strings have the same strings as a 4er with an additional low B. Buy the 5er. It'll save you some money.
hello there - i would like to own a bass like that ... i will check the price
can anyone please tell me the intro song's name?
+Karall Sermen Hi Karall- It's an excerpt from "At the Behest of Penelope & 26" from my Tea in the Typhoon CD. Thx for your interest. :^)
